The detective genre is by far considered to be one of the most captivating out there, and it doesn’t matter which tropes are used in films: it’s always thrilling to see the drama behind the controversial crimes committed.
There’s also a huge variety of ways to keep the story interesting: you can go with a whodunit plot twist, or on the contrary, focus on the main character trying to solve the mystery while the viewers already know all the answers.
Sometimes, though, the answers are unclear even after the movie ends, like it was in Zodiac, the movie which many consider one of the bests in the genre.

However, there is another movie that Reddit believes is the absolute best, and it’s Clint Eastwood’s 2003 detective crime drama called Mystic River. The 89%-rated film was even an Academy Award nominee.

For over half a century, Clint Eastwood has been one of the world’s greatest movie stars. Comfortable in both westerns and contemporary roles, his measured growl of a voice has been a key part in creating such iconic characters as The Man With No Name and Dirty Harry. This photo gallery ranks his best films as a director.
Eastwood made his first foray into directing in 1971 with the thriller “Play Misty For Me,” earning him a newfound critical respect for his clear directorial skills. And over 35 films later, Eastwood has become one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today. Of his 11 Oscar nominations, four have been for Best Director with two wins (1992’s “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004). He also won producing Oscars for the same two movies. He has received seven Golden Globe nominations for directing, winning three times. His peers in the Directors Guild of America...

Clint Eastwood, the actor-turned-director and producer, has had one of the longest and most varied careers of anyone working in the entertainment world. In addition to his film work he has also amassed an impressive resume as a musician and composer and even served as the mayor of the California town Carmel-by-the-Sea during the 1980s.
Eastwood began his film career in westerns and later also found success in crime dramas. He was mostly known for his striking good looks and stoic demeanor though and was not really considered a serious or talented actor. He would slowly work to change that fact and would eventually receive two Oscar nominations for his acting, both as Best Actor for “Unforgiven” in 1992 and “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004. While he didn’t win either of those acting awards, he would win two Oscars for each of those films as Best Director and as a producer...

When Andy Dufresne crawled to freedom through “five hundred yards of shit-smelling foulness” in The Shawshank Redemption, it was the ultimate act of hope. As the story’s tagline has it, “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.”
As the movie turns 30, one small Midwestern town is throwing a celebration this summer — call it a big thank-you. Because filming took place over the summer of 1993 at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield (population 47,000), a onetime manufacturing boomtown in north central Ohio, fans continue to flock from all over the world, eager to tour the former prison, which opened in 2019 as a museum.
Like the town, and like Andy, the movie itself went through a rough patch. Upon release in 1994, Shawshank was initially a box office flop. Seven Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best adapted screenplay, gave it a seal of approval. But then, steadily, by word-of-mouth,...

Morgan Freeman’s presence in movies usually attracts audience, but even his charisma and soothing voice could not save his 1998 action thriller film, Hard Rain. Directed by cinematographer-turned-director Mikael Salomon, the movie emerged as the biggest flop of that year.

Morgan Freeman revealed the most frustrating moment of his career and it also happened to be his career’s biggest regret. Freeman’s career took off with his Oscar-winning film Driving Miss Daisy. Before the role happened, Freeman wanted to play one particular character in a book-based movie and approached Miloš Forman, the director, to convince him to cast him.

On a recent episode of Jeopardy!, Grant DeYoung was looking for his third straight win. However, his two challengers left a little to be desired. In the final round, only one was left and his answer caused Ken Jennings to get short with him as DeYoung won again.
Here is the final Jeopardy! question and why Jennings was frustrated by this moment in the show.
Ken Jennings Short After Bad Jeopardy! Answers
By the time the Final Jeopardy! rolled around, only two competitors remained. The third, Rachel Shelton, had $0 heading into the finals, so she had to leave the game at that point. This means that Grant DeYoung was trying to win his third game in a row against Nick Coombs.
Jennings had already expressed disappointment when Rachel Shelton bet it all on the Daily Double. She went all-in with $7,000 and then missed the question. Ken seemed sad to see her fall,...

Sometimes it’s tough to classify a movie in terms of the genres, as it may blend a number of various elements and stylistics. The 90s obscure movie that has recently been recalled by Redditors is a perfect example of a multi-genre gem.
Even though this film is attributed to the genre of horrors, it’s also much of a mystery thriller and, what’s most interesting, of a war drama about post-traumatic stress disorder. It’ll be of great interest for the most curious cinephiles and horror lovers.
Its plot revolves around Jacob Singer, a Vietnam veteran, who returns home and tries to continue his usual life, as if the war has never happened. However, he gets plagued by terrifying hallucinations, fragmentary visions and flashbacks from Vietnam.
Jacob’s world starts to gradually fall apart, with people and objects of the real world around him morphing with hallucinatory glimpses...

It has been three decades since The Shawshank Redemption was released, yet the movie remains one of the best movies of all time. A timeless classic, the film starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the lead and is based on a Stephen King novel of similar name.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
While throughout the movie, those who have read King’s book, will understand how perfectly the story was adapted by director Frank Darabont, King’s name is largely missing from the credits. A small ‘Thank You’ does appear at the end, but there is no mention of the novel’s name. This lack of connection was apparently a marketing tactic, that continues to hurt even after all this time.

The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont opened up about meeting fantastic people in a callous industry like the film industry during a 2014 interview. He hated that the tabloids painted a bad picture of an actor like Tom Cruise without getting the full picture of how he is in real life. Darabont shared that people should ask his good friend Simon Pegg about the kind of human the Mission: Impossible actor was.

At some point in our lives, each of us has been exposed to the idea of how much harm corporations can do. Of course, it is too naive to divide the world into clear-cut 'black' and 'white' as it is often portrayed in pop culture, but in the case of multinational corporations, history shows that all of this is far more than essentialist hyperbole.
Corporations, sometimes no less powerful and capitalized than some states, have shown their true colors time and time again, cynically seeking profit at any cost. Even if the price is the health and life of their own customers.
That's why feature films about corporations based on real events have a special value. Yes, sometimes documentaries reveal a much more objective view of the terrible truth, but let's be honest, the format of feature films allows to convey these or those ideas to the viewer much more effectively,...

Kevin Costner was on a roll with his baseball-based movies in the 1980s & ’90s, starting with the 1988 film Bull Durham. The film featured Costner in the role of veteran catcher ‘Crash’ Davis, who is brought in to teach rookie pitcher Nuke, played by Tim Robbins. The film was a critical and commercial success, but it was also a topic of discussion among some online fans for one scene in the film. It is rumored that Costner made a young bat boy cry during the film.

Last year, the whole world was amazed by the storyline of Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, a legal drama about a writer trying to prove innocence in her husband's death. It demonstrated the potential toxicity of not only the failed relationship, but the world around us, when people get blamed for crimes even when there’s not enough proof.
There is a 2019 movie of the same genre, telling a similar story, but on much a larger scale. Its plot revolves around Robert Bilott, the real-life environmental attorney, known for the lawsuits against the chemical company DuPont after they contaminated the whole town in West Virginia with unregulated chemicals.
This premise seems to be boring enough to put you asleep with a bunch of pretentious speeches about the need to defend our ecology. However, this drama is not only going to keep you awake, but closely follow the DuPont case.

Frank Darabont's 1994 prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption" wasn't a big hit when it was released in theaters, earning only $16 million on a $25 million budget. Good reviews didn't help, although the film garnered a lot of attention when it was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (for Morgan Freeman), but it lost in every category. That was the year of "Pulp Fiction" and "Forrest Gump," so a film like "Shawshank" was the outlier. Thanks to its nominations, however, the film was re-released in 1995, bolstering its box office. "Shawshank" also became one of the most-rented VHS cassettes of its day, eventually turning it into a well-regarded classic in its own right. By the late 1990s, it began appearing on lists of the best films of all time. To this day, "The Shawshank Redemption" sits at the very top of IMDb's top 250, right above...

The Shawshank Redemption has often been considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. The film was based on a novel by Stephen King and starred Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins in the lead roles. While the film has been a cult classic since its release, its director Frank Darabont has reportedly been blacklisted by the TV and film industries.
Darabont was reportedly instrumental in the success of the AMC series The Walking Dead, for which he was a director, executive producer, and developer. However, the filmmaker was reportedly fired before the production of season two, leading him to sue AMC. Now, Darabont is all set to make a comeback with Netflix’s Stranger Things.

The Shawshank Redemption is effortlessly one of the most magnificent pieces of work ever created in the history of cinema. Starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the lead as Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd Redding, the film is widely considered a true masterpiece by critics and general audiences. However, even this masterpiece had a seeming plothole that puzzled a lot of fans.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994).
Well, at least that’s what Freeman liked to call the scene during the end of the movie in a recent interview at the TCM Classic Film Festival, where the movie celebrated 30 years of existence. But according to Robbins, what his co-star claims to be a plothole isn’t really a plothole, but rather, an extraordinarily simple thing that makes even calling it a “plothole” sound incredibly dumb!

Tim Robbins has been a prominent actor in the industry ever since his impressive films in the 90s. His incredible performances in Jacob’s Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption made him a household name. He went on to earn an Oscar for his heartbreaking performance in 2003’s Mystic River.

Robbins made a surprising entry into the superhero world with the 1986 film Howard the Duck. The film was a colossal flop at the time of release and was not received well. However, Robbins is not against returning for a proper modern revival of the character, but he wants it to have a different tone than the over-the-top nature of the 1986 film.

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actor, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the men most likely to land in the lineup. Last year’s race was completely dominated by actors from “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” neither of which can produce nominees this time since the former ended last May and the latter won’t return until 2025.
Naturally, this category’s sole presently eligible former winner – Billy Crudup – has emerged as the frontrunner. Among his likeliest competitors are two of his own cast mates: 2020 nominee Mark Duplass and series newcomer Jon Hamm, who won the 2015 Best Drama Actor Emmy for “Mad Men” and is widely expected to take this year’s limited series lead prize for “Fargo.”
Other outside winners in the mix include James Cromwell (“Sugar”; formerly of “American Horror Story”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”; “Only Murders in the Building”), and...

The Shawshank Redemption director, Frank Darabont, bought the rights to Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption for $5000 in 1987. It was technically their second collaboration after Darabont adapted King’s The Woman in the Room into a short film. Interestingly, King did not see the vision of the director with the film, as the author felt that his 96-page novella was not a cinematic work like Carrie or The Shining.

However, King was proved wrong as Darabont created one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever. King did see his vision eventually as he assured the director of one scene in the climax that concerned him.

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.

The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

Andy Dufresne wrote “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies,” in a letter to Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding in The Shawshank Redemption, and hence, the film is still talked about today! Upon its 1994 release, Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption disappointed at the box office. Despite garnering critical acclaim and earning seven Oscar nominations at the 67th Academy Awards, the film fell short commercially, grossing only $18 million against a $25 million budget.

However, after getting praised by the Academy and receiving seven nominations, the film was re-released and reportedly earned an additional $10 million in revenue. Beyond its theatrical resurgence, it also gained significant traction among audiences, becoming the most rented movie of 1995.
It has since become one of the most beloved films of all time. And while it failed to make it big at the box office initially, the cast of the film has continued to benefit from residual earnings, with Bob Gunton even ensuring that his daughter will receive checks for years to come.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most beloved, and critically acclaimed, films of all time. On top of having an excellent cast; including Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Clancy Brown, and Bob Gunton, it was also directed by Frank Darabont, who is best known for his work in The Walking Dead.

Even though the film is a thriller, it almost has a lighthearted essence to it, which makes audiences love it all the more. It has an excellent approach to storytelling, showing the worst sides of humanity being overshadowed by a glimmer of hope. All of these aspects have helped the film become the highest-rated film on IMDb, holding a score of 9.3.
Despite this, the film had a very poor run at the box office when it was initially released. It would seem that Robbins has a theory about why this happened.

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

There are a lot of candidates for the title of Best Stephen King Movie Adaptation, from Stanley Kubrick's take on "The Shining" to Rob Reiner's 1986 classic "Stand by Me." But it's clear that the most popular of them is "The Shawshank Redemption," written and directed by Frank Darabont in 1994. It's a movie that's not just beloved, it's literally the number one rated movie of all time on IMDb.
King himself was always a fan of Darabont's adaptations. Unlike with Stanley Kubrick, there were no major, irreconcilable creative differences between Darabont and King. Even when Darabont made a major change to the source material, like with controversial ending to "The Mist," King wasn't mad. Instead, he was jealous that he hadn't thought of the idea first. Even Darabont's first-ever adaptation of King's work, the little-known 1984 short "The Woman in the Room," was impressive to the renowned author. In a 2014 piece for Oscars.

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.
