Friday Afternoon: Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie is showing his teeth against Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a second-weekend faceoff between the two, $12M+ to $11.3M.
Garfield today is looking at $3.3M at 4,018 theaters, while Furiosa has $3M at 3,864. Garfield‘s Weekend 2 hold is 53% off the 3-day, while Furiosa isn’t shabby at -57%. By Sunday, Garfield‘s running total will stand at $49.5M, while Furiosa will be at $50.2M.
Furiosa still has Imax auditoriums, but Crunchyroll/Sony’s Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle has some of those, that pic looking at a No. 5 slot with $2M today and around $4M for the weekend. Remember that when it comes to these anime movies, the U.S. market is simply gravy money, much like domestic is for Bollywood movies. Dumpster Battle already has made $75M from Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and Hong Kong.

Last year, a bidding war was going down between Netflix and Amazon for a lucrative package deal. The two streaming giants were in a fight to acquire the film rights to the novella by Don Winslow called Crime 101. The package deal had included two attached stars — Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. Although, Pascal has now reportedly been replaced by Mark Ruffalo. It also has a director set to helm the project with Bart Layton, whose credits include the documentary The Imposter from 2012 and American Animals from 2018. Amazon had come out as the victor and according to Deadline, Saltburn and Masters of the Air star Barry Keoghan will now join the heist film.
Crime 101 is said to be a crime drama in the vein of Michael Mann’s Heat. The plot of the film has yet to be released; however, Deadline’s summary of the novel reads that “the...

George Miller is one of the most fantastic storytellers in the entertainment industry, credited with having birthed critically acclaimed projects that range from the comedy/musical Happy Feet to the horror/action Dead Calm.
While he has left fans in the fantasy world through films like Babe, he has also managed to unsettle his audiences through a saga as remarkable as his Mad Max one.

Talking about that, this specific action/adventure universe of his that never ceases to leave his viewers unsettled has not only been in his mind for a long time but has also ascended from themes of his own past.
If anything, the things seen in his lore are widely synonymous with what Miller went through in his past, establishing him as the true legend that many already deem him to be.

It will be a real shame if George Miller doesn’t get to make his mooted follow-up, The Wasteland, because of the low takings of such a creatively ambitious and oddball film as Furiosa
The film industry is obsessed with box office figures. The Tinseltown trades spend far more time focusing on whichever recent blockbuster has lost $200m than they do on the movies that pick up critical plaudits. There is a constant sense that, with such huge budgets flying around in the era of Avatar: The Way of Water and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny that the entire financial Hollywood house of cards could be about to come crashing down faster than one can mutter “massive CGI mega-budget” under one’s breath.
I was once fortunate enough to share the same rarefied air as Willem Dafoe, who asked me politely, in response to an impertinent question regarding...

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But nine years have passed, the Fury Road prequel Furiosa is now in theatres,...

A long-anticipated prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy-led Furiosa premiered last Friday, on May 24, 2024. With all the hype surrounding the movie and its predecessor’s legacy, we expected Furiosa to conquer the box office in no time… However, that hasn’t happened so far, and things are looking pretty bleak for Taylor-Joy’s first post-apocalyptic outing in terms of finance.
Furiousa’s Opening Weekend Was Unimpressive
Despite being a phenomenally well-crafted movie in a very well-established franchise with a really star-studded cast, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga failed to rake up a significant amount of money in its opening weekend. For the first six days of its theatrical run, Furiosa can only show $68M as its box office haul, and it gets worse.
The split between domestic and global markets is almost even and thus doesn’t matter. What’s important, though, is that Furiosa had a...

Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join another blockbuster franchise.
After playing Marvel’s Thor and the deranged villain Dementus in George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Hemsworth is in talks to star in the upcoming crossover between the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” franchises from Paramount.
The “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” crossover was first teased back in last year’s entry, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” and officially confirmed at this year’s CinemaCon by Paramount. In the end of “Rise of the Beasts,” Anthony Ramos’ character Noah meets a shady government operative named Agent Burke, played “House of Cards” star Michael Kelly. He hands Noah a business card, after saving the world with the Autobots, and it’s revealed Burke works for the G.I. Joes, a special team of commandos. As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.

We have reported that George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win the Memorial Day weekend box office ahead of The Garfield Movie, but that the overall results were disappointing and that the whole weekend was the worst in 30 years, as far as the box office is concerned. While everyone is praising Furiosa, and we know that the studio is proud of the project, it hasn’t drawn a lot of people to cinemas, and some are afraid that Furiosa‘s result at the box office might influence the future of the Mad Max franchise in a negative way.
As we know, and Miller himself has talked about this, there are ideas for more movies and we know that the story for Mad Max: The Wasteland has already been written, but whether the movie will ever be made might depend on how much money Furiosa earns in its theatrical run,...

Nine years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road and nearly 45 years after his original Mad Max movie debut, George Miller brought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact that Furiosa would be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, has not been performing very well in theaters since it went on release last Friday, and unless there's a drastic improvement in box office takings, this could spell doom for the legendary filmmaker's plans for a follow-up.
Furiosa took in a disappointing $35 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend, and amassed an only slightly better $40 million overseas for a running global total of $75 million.
The movie opens in Greece and Japan this week, before releasing in China on June 7.
It is worth noting that Fury Road was by no means a box office smash, either, but the movie's popularity and Academy Awards attention is believed to have factored into Warner Bros.' decision to greenlight Miller's prequel - and they may not be quite so quick to do the same if Furiosa doesn't get a high-octane boost of box...

The Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery cast has added another couple of movie stars to its roster – and one of their names rhymes with Clenn Glose…
Rian Johnson’s next stab at the murder mystery format is sprinting headlong towards production, with another famous face or two joining an already starry cast.
After a week with slightly chaotic casting reports flying all over the place, we’re getting a much better idea of what Wake Up Dead Man – the third in Johnson’s beloved Knives Out Mystery franchise – is going to look like. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga witnessed an underwhelming opening weekend during Memorial Day, despite its hype and the fantastic cast assembled for the film. Connected to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road as a prequel, George Miller’s latest installment had initially anticipated big box office numbers. However, Furiosa’s path to Valhalla was unfortunately tarnished.

The weak first-weekend performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is concerningly indicative of larger issues with the Hollywood box office. Note that the latest flick, under the direction of George Miller, is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Sure, the stellar cast that it brought together made the movie one of the most anticipated of the year, especially in the film enthusiast community.
Thus, one can’t help but wonder: What magic could Charlize Theron have woven had she returned as the indomitable Furiosa in Miller’s ambitious saga? Sadly, her absence in the anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is obvious.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly beat The Garfield Movie by less than $1 million over the Memorial Day box office weekend, making it clear the film isn’t quite the blockbuster Warner Bros. was hoping it would be. But what does this mean for the next Mad Max movie?
Unfortunately, the news isn’t good, at least for now. A report from THR states that Furiosa‘s disappointing $32 million domestic take is “diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland.” Director George Miller had previously acknowledged that the possibility of more Mad Max movies was linked to how well Furiosa performed but added that he wasn’t even going to think about it until after the movie was released.

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

While it made $65 million dollars worldwide in its global opening, it’s fair to say that the domestic opening for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” at $32 million, was underwhelming and, worrisomely, might be the end of the ‘Mad Max’ franchise. Then again, “Mad Max: Fury Road” never opened up substantially higher, only earning $45 million in its early May debut in 2015.

Christofer Sundberg, who founded Avalanche Studios back in 2003, recently took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Mad Max video game. In a candid tweet, Sundberg said that the game could have been significantly better if it had been allowed to follow its original creative vision.
He described the financial repercussions the team faced whenever they disagreed with any external demands from WB, which led to compromises that ultimately affected the game’s quality and overall vision.
These tweets were in response to George Miller’s original comment during the press tour of Furiosa, where he said that the original 2015 game didn’t quite meet his expectations.

Marvel and DC Comics have long served as twin colossi in the boundless universe of pop culture, inspiring legions of impassioned devotees. These two powerhouses of the comic book world have long been at odds, with fans fiercely defending their favorite superheroes and storylines. However, amidst the constant bickering and rivalry between Marvel and DC fans, there is one figure who has managed to earn respect and love for his achievements in the DC universe: Zack Snyder.

George Miller is astounded by the enduring popularity of the 'Mad Max' franchise. The 79-year-old director has helmed the new dystopian prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' and explained that he never expected it to be captivating audiences over four decades on from the release of the original movie.Asked if he expected the appeal of 'Mad Max' to span generations, George told IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast: "Never!"It's best expressed in John Lennon's notion that life is what happens when you're making other plans."Miller explained that the demands of 1979's 'Mad Max' had put him off from directing again and it was only when he began to gauge the world's reaction to the film that he was convinced otherwise. He said: "I began to realise that inadvertently, we had hit on something archetypal."In Japan, he was a samurai.

As George Miller’s oil and blood-fuelled Furiosa hits the screens, we ponder what makes a great prequel.
Mild spoilers for The First Omen.
There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.
George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

George Miller, the legendary filmmaker behind the iconic Mad Max series, is once again delving into monochromatic territory. It’s confirmed that his latest film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will receive a black-and-white edition dubbed Tinted Black and Chrome. Miller announced this version during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused. The decision to create a monochrome edition stems from his ongoing fascination with the format. As Miller explained, I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. Miller’s Vision for Furiosa The...

Over the course of 45 years and five films, director George Miller has created something unparalleled in the world of action cinema: an epic franchise that started great (with 1979’s “Mad Max”) and has grown exponentially more audacious, complex, and visionary with each subsequent film. Each time Miller returns to the “Mad Max” universe — from “The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985) to “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) — he expands upon and deepens the story with increasing ambition, a project that has now culminated in the most epic (in both length and mythological impact) entry in the series to date, “Furiosa.” The longevity of the series and the enduring fertility of Miller’s imagination have proven one of the movies’ great surprises over the years — especially to Miller himself.
In fact, when asked whether he ever envisioned the “Mad Max” saga lasting for decades, Miller had a quick answer. “Never!” he...

While some might have predicted it, you wouldn’t be wrong in saying that most people were surprised at the low box office debut for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The film has made approximately $33 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which is one of the worst Memorial Weekend debuts in decades. That would seemingly stop all discussion about more ‘Mad Max’ films in the near future, which means ‘The Wasteland’ might not ever see the light of day.

It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. The overall earnings for the weekend are not that good, but that is a different issue we are going to discuss later in the article. What is important is that we can confirm that Furiosa won at the domestic box office and that its total gross, including the worldwide revenues, is at $64,800,000, according to the numbers published on Box Office Mojo.

The summer box office opened up to Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The George Miller directorial served as a prequel and a spinoff to the 2015 Tom Hardy film and carried forward the legacy of practical effects, breathtaking stunt choreography, and pure action. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga may technically be winning the weekend box office; however, the film has performed quite a bit below the projected expectations. Despite the total numbers of its debut weekend, another version of Furiosa may also become available for fans in the future. Some may recall that George Miller’s previous entry, Mad Max: Fury Road, received a black & white version over a year later, which was dubbed “Black & Chrome.” The black & white version of Fury Road was a vision that Miller had intended, but the studio would not allow it. Instead, Miller had released a post-apocalyptic movie that had a rare rich color saturation.

George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise Mad Max has reached new heights – now we have five films about road wars and deadly battles in the scorching sands.
With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in theaters, we rank all the films in the franchise, from the outright failure to the action masterpiece.
5. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, 1985
The city of Bartertown is ruled by the treacherous ruler Entity. To consolidate her power, she turned to Max, an unsurpassed master of street fighting. And the law of the Thunderdome arena is extremely cruel: two in, only one out.
Max must lead a group of lost children out of the desert to lay the foundation for a more humane civilization than the one born after the nuclear apocalypse of World War III.
The movie is George Miller's most exotic entry in the entire history of Mad Max – so exotic that fans of the franchise prefer to ignore Beyond Thunderdome.

It seems like any time a younger version of a character appears on screen, we can’t help but immediately compare with the one we’re more familiar with. How often have you said, “That looks nothing like them!”? And while digital de-aging can be done to achieve the desired outcome (depending on the age gap), modern technology has offered yet another way: yes, we’re talking about artificial intelligence. And that’s just what was used to get Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Brown in Furiosa to match as closely as possible.

US box office revenue is down 36% on last year’s Memorial Day weekend, as the two leading films take only around $30m each
Neither a fat cat nor a ravening pack of post-apocalyptic Australian warlords could save US cinemas from their worst performance over the Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades.
George Miller’s origins tale Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga just pipped pizza-loving feline Garfield to the top spot, taking $32m (£25m) over the four days, compared with Garfield’s $31.1m (£24m). Ghostly animation Casper took $22m (£17m) over the same period in 1995, but ever since then receipts have been up – excluding in 2020, when cinemas were entirely closed due to Covid.

As he did with Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller plans to release a monochromatic, Black And Chrome edition of this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Following in the dusty tyre tracks of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga could eventually get its own black and white edition.
Miller revealed as much on Happy Sad Confused, the podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, in which the Mad Max filmmaker said the monochrome Furiosa’s would be called Tinted Black And Chrome.
It’s a title that echoes Black And Chrome, the colour-free edition of Mad Max: Fury Road released in 2016. At the time, Miller described it as “the best version of the movie.”
