John Waters is still stirring things up at 78. A frequent Real Time guest of Bill Maher, the writer, actor, and filmmaker of such cult classics as Pink Flamingoes and Cry-Baby can still zing with the best.
He started off with a brief discussion of this week’s biggest news, the Trump trial results in New York.
“If he gets home detention, you will hear Melania scream,” Waters said. Adding, “In jail, they pay guards for cell phones. He has to sneak in “Just for Men.”
The conversation took an abrupt turn when Maher brought up the Pope’s slur against gays this week, which prompted Waters to reminisce about the days of Glory Holes on both coasts. “God, I hope I didn’t blow Rex Reed!”
Fortunately for Walters, he claimed his films are “doing better than ever,” though he admits he lost every obscenity case he was ever involved in.

Buoyed by a two-year deal at HBO, a weekly CNN presence and a new book, Bill Maher now has decided to describe himself as a “centrist.” Is it a claim in vain?
Having watched his show for years and done several shows with him, I suspect he’s instinctively too “incorrect” to qualify for “moderation.” Strategically, some feel he shouldn’t even try.
The audience for stand-ups and for TV in general is changing noticeably, to some performers’ discomfort. At their annual upfronts, TV executives two weeks ago no longer were obsessed by that premium 18-49 age group, acknowledging that their remaining audience is becoming geriatric – 66 for the ABC network, for example, and 69 for Fox News.
Stand-up comics report their crowds at arenas or clubs are aging as well, and they are adjusting their routines accordingly. Even the jokes seem less coital, more socially consensual.
So will the more mature...

In a new Joe Biden campaign advertisement, Robert De Niro declared that former president Donald Trump “snapped” after he lost the 2020 presidential election.
“From midnight tweets to drinking bleach to tear-gassing citizens and staging a photo-op,” De Niro recounted at the beginning of the advertisement. “We knew Trump was out of control when he was president, and then he lost the 2020 election and snapped.”
“Desperately trying to hold on to power,” he said while clips of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack were shown in the ad. “Now he’s running again, this time threatening to be a dictator, to terminate the Constitution.”
De Niro’s “dictator” comment was in reference to his telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity during a town hall interview in December that he would only be a dictator on the first day of his presidency.
The campaign ad then showed a video of the former president saying at a rally in Dayton,...

Vivek Ramaswamy, who disclosed a big stake in BuzzFeed last week, sent a letter to the online publisher’s board of directors asking for major changes from staffing and focus to the board makeup as well as an apology for previous reporting. CEO Jonah Peretti declined the mea culpa but agreed to meet with the former Republican presidential primary candidate and Donald Trump surrogate, whom he said has some “fundamental misunderstandings” of the company’s business.
“Hey Vivek – Thanks for reaching out, nice to finally hear from you. I’m glad you think BuzzFeed is undervalued – I totally agree!,” he wrote.
BuzzFeed went public in 2021 after merging with a Spac. Ramaswamy disclosed last week he’s acquired well over 8% of the company, making him one of the company’s largest individual shareholders.

Vivek Ramaswamy’s plans for BuzzFeed are becoming a bit clearer, with the entrepreneur turned activist investor releasing a lengthy letter outlining what he believes the company should do to turn itself around.
Ramaswamy disclosed a sizable activist stake in BuzzFeed last week. In his letter Monday, Ramaswamy said that he has since upped his stake to 8.37 percent.
In an emailed response to Ramaswamy also sent Monday, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti offered to meet “to better explain the strategy that we’ve outlined on our recent earnings calls, and why we’re so confident it will create the most value.”
In his letter, Ramaswamy called for three new board seats, and to dramatically cut costs.
“Rather than cutting from the top, the company should start from zero and retain only the resources required to create and monetize BuzzFeed’s highest-value content,” he wrote. “This will almost certainly require large-scale headcount reductions,...

Over the weekend, Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” appeared on Fareed Zakaria’s show on CNN to discuss his new book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.” As usual, Maher was blunt about his thoughts on modern politics. Maher didn’t mince words, saying boldly, The kids are crazy and highlighting how the Left has evolved into a group with increasingly stupid ideas. Addressing critics who say he’s become cranky, he assured them, I haven’t changed… it’s that your ideas are stupid. Recently, The View fans became suspicious that co-host, Joy Behar, may have gotten herself into some trouble. Some fans believe the blunt conversationalist just might be on a suspension.
Joy Behar Has The View Fans Questioning
Although one of the big perks of working on The View is the way each of the co-hosts can assert their opinions, did Joy Behar take it too far? While viewers are familiar with the norms of the co-hosts’ schedule, something seems a little off for Joy. Notably, Whoopi Goldberg typically takes off on Fridays and Joy Behar is off on Mondays. Travis Kelce is giving his thoughts on Harrison Butker’s controversial graduation speech.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end addressed the criticism the Chiefs kicker has received for his speech in which he made remarks directed towards women, suggesting they should embrace being a “homemaker.” He also condemned abortion, euthanasia, IVF, surrogacy and the LGBTQ community.
On a new episode of his New Heights podcast, Kelce first described Butker as a “great person” and “great teammate.” He added, “He’s treated friends and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone.”
However, Kelce reiterated that “when it comes down to his views and what he said at the Benedictine College commencement speech, those are his.”
“I can’t say I agree with the majority of it or just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids.

Eric Weinberg, a former writer-producer on the medical sitcom “Scrubs,” was ordered on Tuesday to stand trial by a Los Angeles judge. He is facing 28 charges of rape and sexual assault from eight different accusers and could receive multiple life sentences if convicted, according to media reports.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo heard testimony from nine women at a preliminary two-week hearing that ended in early May. The women, who have only been identified as Jane Does, said they agreed to meet Weinberg as his house for modeling sessions that quickly became physical.
Four of the Jane Does testified that Weinberg choked them and one said, “I was afraid he was going to kill me.” Another said, “I just remember thinking I was going to die,” when Weinberg placed both hands on her throat.
Olmedo dismissed four other counts on Tuesday: three because of the statute of limitations and one due to lack of evidence.

The hosts of The View brought one of the more controversial figures in talk media into the fold of their “Hot Topics” discussions on Tuesday, welcoming Real Time host Bill Maher to the table to talk about his coverage of the 2024 presidential election cycle so far on his HBO late-night series. “You’re a comic, but you basically go up against Trump and Biden, both of them, and a lot of people are not happy about that,” Joy Behar said at the start, to which Maher clarified, “Well, not equally.” “Well, not equally,” Behar agreed, “Because you know that Trump is more of a danger.” “Of course!” Maher conceded. “I don’t think anybody was more out front on that danger than I was. Forget the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. Bill Maher spent the first segment of Friday’s Real Time asking about a cultural battle – the feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
To explain the war of words, Maher brought in Michael Eric Dyson, a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of the book Unequal: A Story of America.
Dyson blamed the feud on a personality clash. “Kendrick Lamar didn’t like the fact that Drake was who he was,” a resentment dating back years. It kept brewing until it “blew up in one particular song,” which was Like That, a 2024 collaboration by Future, Metro Boomin, and Lamar.
Dyson said verbal battles are not unusual in the Black community. He pointed out that Drake, a Canadian, has been accused of being a “culture vulture” who is not socially conscious. “So his Blackness was put into question,” Dyson said.

Known for his influential work, Fast Food Nation, Schlosser shed light on the recent outbreak of bird flu in dairy farms, causing alarm among health experts. We have avian influenza being spread by cows, and scientists had no idea until a few weeks ago that this influenza could even be in cows at all, Schlosser revealed. The CDC subsequently reported the first cases of this bird flu variant in cows on

CNN aims to return to the recipe that gave its viewers explorers of international cuisine such as Anthony Bourdain and Stanley Tucci.
After announcing in October of 2022 that the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet would pull back on the efforts that made it a name in original documentary series and films — ostensibly to cut costs at a time when its corporate parent was grappling with significant debt — CNN wants to get back into the business of developing original non-fiction series and movies.
“I think we are very much in the rebuild phase,” Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content, tells Variety during a recent interview.
Mark Thompson, named in August to oversee CNN following a tumultuous run under predecessor Chris Licht, has articulated a strategy of building out new areas and verticals that can help the company win more customers and viewers. Original series would seem to be one of them.

After passionately defending filmmaker Woody Allen, Bill Maher has now shared his arguments in favor of welcoming back Louis C.K., in a conversation with fellow comedian Bill Burr, who not only supported his claims but also went on to claim that the cancel culture is not as influential as it once was.

They shared their perspective in a recent discussion on Maher’s Club Random Podcast, talking about the disgraced comedian, who was ousted from the industry after being accused of s*xual misconduct and inappropriate behavior. He has since continued directing and producing his projects. However, the talk show host believes that he should be able to make a comeback.

Bill Burr made an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast and declared that “cancel culture” is “over.”
During the interview, Louis C.K. was mentioned. The comedian was largely ousted by Hollywood after being accused of sexual misconduct. Louis C.K. has returned to touring and producing his own projects, and Maher thinks he should be able to return.
“I mean, don’t get me started on that,” Maher said. “Isn’t it time everyone just went: ‘Ok, It wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough! I mean for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world. People have done so much worse things and gotten less. There’s no rhyme or reason to the #MeToo-type punishments.”
Burr added, “They took $50 million, I think they punished him.”

Bill Burr joined Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast and declared cancel culture is over, while Maher once again doubled down in disbelief about how Louis C.K. remains on the outs in Hollywood. C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017 and admitted to masturbating in front of several female comics a few weeks later. While C.K. has continued to tour and direct his own projects, he largely operates outside of the Hollywood studio system.
“I mean, don’t get me started on that,” Maher told Burr when C.K. was brought up. “Isn’t it time everyone just went: ‘Ok, It wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough! Eric Schlosser knows food. Not in the way Bobby Flay or Giada De Laurentiis does, but in a scholarly manner that knows its affects on the health of anyone who eats.
The author of the classic study Fast Food Nation and an EP on several films, Schlosser came to Bill Maher’s Friday Real Time as a harbinger of potential doom to come, a guest with the credentials to back up his scary predictions with authority.
The next pandemic, Schlosser said, is potentially germinating down in Texas. That’s where it was recently discovered that bird flu had migrated into the cows at mega-dairies, and the federal government has not been allowed in to test the livestock or its workers.
“It’s a perfect example of how the public health is being threatened by private interests,” he said, noting, “The food industry spends more money lobbying than the defense industry.

Bill Maher may be done with stand-up comedy. The comedian said this week he believes his upcoming HBO special will be his last.
Maher revealed the news during a conversation with fellow comic Jerry Seinfeld on his Club Random podcast. Maher told his friend he felt “nervous” to tell him, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [stand-up],” he said.
Seinfeld appeared shocked by the news, to which Maher said, “I don’t want to make a big announcement or something,” but noted that his upcoming special for HBO — scheduled for later this year — will be his 13th.
“That’s a lot,” Seinfeld said.
Maher agreed, and added, “I put a lot of time and effort into it. As you know, stand-up is like playing the cello. You can’t just walk up there. You have to stay in practice. And I do, I’ve always loved it.

I’ll admit I doubted a third Tron movie would ever happen, but I’m thankful to be proven wrong. After kicking off production at the start of the year, Tron: Ares has wrapped production and director Joachim Rønning has shared a handful of photos on Instagram.

“That’s a wrap on Tron: Ares,” Rønning wrote. “Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.” You’ll note that some of the photos contain blurred-out elements, with one seemingly covering up a Light Cycle.

Bill Maher says he’s ready to put down the mic—at least when it comes to standup
Sitting down with Jerry Seinfeld on the latest episode of Maher’s Club Random podcast, the long-time host of HBO’s Real Time revealed that he’s planning to wind down his standup career.
“I feel nervous about telling you. I feel like you’re the confessor to this,” Maher told Seinfeld, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [standup].”
Maher was quick to give himself an out. “I could go back. I don’t want to make, like, a big announcement or something,” he cautioned. “I mean, I’m doing a special at the end of the year. It’ll be my 13th for HBO. That’s a lot.”
Seinfeld seemed surprised by the news, but would ultimately tell Maher the idea was “not crazy” after hearing the full reasoning.

Jimmy Failla isn’t taking over Fox News Chanel, but he has, at least for one short period in the late afternoon, seized control of a portion of its New York ground-floor facilities.
The space is typically devoted to a space for guests to hang out and a section for hair and makeup, but Failla uses it to get himself revved up to tape “Fox News Saturday Night,” a program the network says is devoted less to red-versus-blue rants and more to making people laugh. Jeff Bridges reveals he is all set to return to the Tron series that he helped to establish all the way back in 1982, for Tron: Ares.
After many years of waiting, Tron: Ares, a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, is finally in production. Tron: Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski hasn’t returned and neither have any of the film’s stars – well, apart from one (you can probably guess who it is from the headline). Here we go again. Apparently not content with his ongoing feud with Jimmy Kimmel, Donald Trump added two more Late Nighters to his enemies list this weekend.
Trump took to Truth Social with his take on the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, which featured an interview with third-party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. While the post was mostly aimed at Rfk Jr., Trump made sure to get a couple barbs in at Maher first.
“I actually watched, first time in a long time, ratings challenged Bill Maher’s really boring interview with Rfk Jr. last night,” Trump wrote in a Sunday morning post.
