The same year that he laid the groundwork for a horror revolution with Black Christmas, Bob Clark released Deathdream (also known as Dead of Night). The 1974 horror film is understandably overshadowed by his influential proto-slasher, but it was on Deathdream that the filmmaker honed his skills that would fuel his masterpiece of the genre: a brooding atmosphere, a calculated pace, a subtle score by Carl Zittrer that’s inseparable from the organic sound design, and even the use of a rocking chair to achieve unease.
Deathdream found Clark re-teaming with writer Alan Ormsby and several other cast and crew members from his 1972 film, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things. While it suffers from minor pacing issues, Deathdream is significantly more well rounded. Jack McGowan’s cinematography is often flat (albeit an improvement over his work on Dead Things), but the budget – still limited but some five times larger than the...

George Clooney as a fixer? "Wolfs" is not, in fact, the sequel to the former Batman's excellent 2007 legal thriller "Michael Clayton." It does, however, reunite Clooney with his "Ocean's" trilogy costar Brad Pitt for the kind of original adult genre film that's in short supply these days. And no, before you ask, that's not a spelling mistake. We're talking about "Wolfs," not the 2014 werewolf flick "Wolves" ... or the 2016 sports drama "Wolves" ... or even 2022's murder mystery "Wolves." Man, who knew "Wolves" was such a versatile title?
"Wolfs" sees Clooney and Pitt playing a pair of fixers who're assigned to the same job in what will surely be a cage-match to rival that of "Godzilla vs. Kong" or Alien vs. Predator." Or maybe not; the trailer teaser and unofficial set photos released ahead of today's trailer premiere have much more of a "Locke" vibe, with Clooney and Pitt sitting in stony...

When movie fans think of action stars, names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Donnie Yen, Bruce Willis, and Jason Statham come to mind. Eli Roth’s Borderlands will finally hit theaters this August, almost nine years after its announcement. The film, based on the critically acclaimed video game franchise of the same name, underwent several script changes and production delays. The Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart starrer’s trailer was a mixed bag.
Moreover, fans of the game franchise are skeptical of the big screen medium as it may not have the time to establish different storylines starting from the 2009 game.
Cate Blanchett in a still from the upcoming film Borderlands
A popular suggestion among the video game fanbase was to make Borderlands into an animated series. This animated version would be a much better way to bring the world-building, numerous characters, and their complex interconnected storylines onto the screen.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

It’s good to be Paul Giamatti. With seven years of Showtime’s Billions under his belt, and a fresh Oscar nomination for The Holdovers in his rearview mirror, the legendary character actor can seemingly have his pick of any role he wants on the big or small screen. According to a scoop by notorious Hollywood tipster Daniel Richtman, he may have just chosen the most unlikely follow-up of all time: a TV version of Eli Roth’s Hostel from the controversial horror auteur himself.
While this might sound outrageous to some, Giamatti has been very open about his love of the genre, noting that he wants to add more horror to his filmography. He’s always carved out time in his schedule to be in genre stuff like the series 30 Coins, the movies Morgan, John Dies at the End, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shoot ’em Up, and more. He also...

We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

Back in 1999, when the Internet was still relatively new and everyone was used to pixelated footage from portable cameras, the world was rocked by The Blair Witch Project. Obviously fictional, yet eerily realistic, the film haunted many viewers for years and had a huge impact on the genre, popularizing found footage films.
However, 25 years later, with a plethora of films attempting to replicate the success of The Blair Witch Project, and even more films using CGI and highly realistic makeup to create deeper stories, the question arises as to whether the film is still relevant.

We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

The trick with horror is how you use the tropes. Slashers, ghost stories, monster movies, there’s a formula to them all but what separates the good from the bad is how they use that formula in an innovative way. James Button and Kristaps Kazaks’ short turned web series turned short again The Corpse Series is a great example of this. At its heart, it’s a comedy about two bumbling idiots trying to dig themselves out of a bad situation. It’s just that the bad situation is an ever increasing stack of dead bodies. The innovation and excitement of Button and Kazaks’ short is in its escalation and how the filmmakers string together the ever-increasing chaos of their characters’ situation. It really is such a fun time and must-watch for fans of Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy or Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series. Dn is...

Stephen King is the undisputed King of Horror, and his chilling narratives extend far beyond literature, regularly receiving film and television adaptations, some of which he personally works on.
But no matter how brilliant a writer Mr. King is, it's hard to deny that every artist is inspired by the works of others. That's why King, being a massive cinephile, often talks openly about the movies in the thriller or horror genre that have been influential to him.
The movie we're talking about today, however, didn't just influence the writer, it downright freaked him out, causing him to turn it off halfway through, because King was also high after the surgery. Quite a horrible experience if you ask us, though the movie in question was capable of scaring even a completely sober person.

Last year, New Regency went into production on a horror thriller called Psycho Killer, based on a screenplay written by Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker. Gavin Polone, producer of Zombieland and the Walker-scripted 8Mm, was at the helm of the film, with Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) and Logan Miller (Escape Room) in lead roles and 6’5″+ former professional wrestler James Preston Rogers in the title role. The film has since made its way through post-production, and FilmRatings.com reports that it has officially earned an R rating for strong bloody violence, strong
sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language. So this one is sounding quite promising.
Campbell is taking on the role of Jane Thorne, a police officer who makes it her mission to take down a serial killer referred to on the news as the ‘Satanic Slasher,’ following the murder of her state trooper husband.

A New O.J. Movie Stars the Controversial Charlotte Kirk (But Definitely Not Owen Wilson)
Hey, Hollywood, anybody interested in a partially finished film about how O.J. Simpson might have been innocent? One that stars Charlotte Kirk — the English actress best known for her previous role in taking down moguls Kevin Tsujihara and Ron Meyer in a 2019 sex scandal — as Nicole Brown Simpson? If yes, this is your lucky day. According to British director Joshua Newton, about 30 minutes of The Juice (originally titled Nicole and O.J.) is in the can, mostly flashback scenes featuring Kirk and German-born actor Boris Kodjoe, currently on ABC’s Station 19, who plays the late NFL star turned acquitted murderer. Newton, who has been working on this “satirical thriller” since 2015, says the picture’s main plotline involves a real-life attorney named Douglas McCann who got sucked into various conspiracy theories during Simpson’s 1995 criminal trial.

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

Brad Pitt’s character ‘One Punch’ Mickey in the film Snatch had to be dirty, smelly, and scruffy and the actor was willing to go the extra mile for the demands of the character. The character was part of a gypsy-like group of Irish travelers and Pitt decided not to wash himself to get into the skin of his character. Interestingly, old habits die hard for Pitt, who reportedly found a way around having to wash himself regularly.
Snatch actor Brad Pitt went overboard with one unhygienic habit for the film
When starring in the Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds, Pitt gave a tip to co-star Eli Roth on how to avoid taking a shower and still look fresh. It appears that the star has broken his personal hygiene code too many times for his roles.

Now You See Me 3 is gearing up to roll cameras this year and Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith and Ariana Greenblatt have joined the cast.
Now You See Me 3 is coming out way sooner rather than later as Jesse Eisenberg confirmed that cameras would roll sometime this year. The sequel has been in the works for years, but it seems that it’s truly happening now.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa and Ariana Greenblatt have joined the ensemble cast. Their roles, like the film’s plot, is still being kept under wraps, but one would imagine they might play a new generation of magicians.
Eisenberg seems to be on board and the previous films’ cast, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman are also expected to reprise their roles, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Now You See Me 3 will be released by Lionsgate.

Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o said that when word came her way that she’d been selected to receive CinemaCon’s star of the year award during the closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, it led her to ponder what cinema has meant to her.
“One of my strongest memories from my adolescence came to mind,” said the 41-year-old actress while accepting the trophy inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Thursday night. “My very first date was going to see a movie at the cinema in Nairobi, Kenya, where I grew up. I was 16. Not only was I going out with this boy I liked for the first time, but I would be watching my crush Leonardo DiCaprio in none other than Titanic.
Nyong’o, honored for her upcoming turn in Paramount Pictures’ thriller A Quiet Place: Day One, said she was beyond excited to see DiCaprio in the 1997 disaster epic from James Cameron.

Eli Roth turned adapting the video game “Borderlands” into a mini film school for its young star Ariana Greenblatt.
Roth had Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis at his disposal in the space-set sci-fi adventure film, but it was “Barbie” breakout Greenblatt (also of “65” and “In the Heights”) who he says stole the feature. Roth called Greenblatt’s performance in his new film reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s turn in Luc Besson’s controversial crime thriller “Leon: The Professional.”
Pretty good company there.
As it turns out, “Leon: The Professional” is one of Greenblatt’s faves. The young actress (16 now, 13 when she auditioned for “Borderlands,” actually has quite the film palate considering her age. Especially now.
Roth assigned Greenblatt “My Dinner with Andre” to prepare for her “Borderlands” role — “just to fuck with her,” he added. But she dutifully watched it — and as Roth recalled, Greenblatt really dug “the dessert scene.

Over the past few years, one Hollywood mystery has been how the video game adaptation Borderlands managed to attract such a stacked A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett, given its raunchy, violent nature. At CinemaCon on Wednesday, director Eli Roth said the key to landing Blanchett, whom he said he decided to call on a whim, was not thinking she’d take the role.
“People love seeing you with a conductor stick, and I’m going to throw a flame thrower in her hand,” he recalled telling Blanchett, referencing her acclaimed work in Tár. To his surprise, Blanchett said the apocalyptic feature Escape From New York was among her favorite movies, and she was glad to join the project. From there, the rest fell into place.
Blanchett stars as Lilith, the leader of a crew of outlaws on a mission to retrieve treasure from a vault hidden on the planet.

Even Eli Roth can’t believe that two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett was willing to learn to twirl guns and shoot baddies in “Borderlands,” the director’s gonzo adaptation of the popular video game.
Roth noted that since people loved seeing Blanchett wield a baton in “Tár,” where she portrayed a fictional world-famous conductor embroiled in controversy, the filmmaker said he might as well “put a flamethrower in her hand.”
In “Borderlands,” Blanchett sports a fiery red bob and is surrounded by the starry ensemble of Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and “Barbie” breakout Ariana Greenblatt. The story follows Blanchett as Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past. She reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora and forms an unexpected alliance to find the missing daughter of Atlas.

"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Garland established himself as a screenwriter with films like Danny Boyle‘s “28 Days Later” and the 2012 “Dredd” movie starring Karl Urban, but his 2015 directorial debut “Ex Machina...

With “Star Wars: The Acolyte” taking the franchise in a darker direction, this begs the question: where are the Star Wars horror games? While it’s not an official game, developer Stefano Cagnani (who also created his own game based off of Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving) has given us a taste of what could be a cool idea for Star Wars in the horror sense with Star Wars: Deathtroopers, which sees you battling waves of zombie Stormtroopers.
Available on itch.io and powered by Unreal Engine 5, Star Wars: Deathtroopers is an episodic game that casts you as a lone Stormtrooper, with you having to shoot your way through your now-zombified comrades. The first episode takes place in a Star Destroyer, whereas the second episode is on Endor. In the latter, you end up crashing into Endor, where you’ll find no refuge from the zombie virus, which has already spread...

The Long Game releases April 12th, 2024.
Inspirational sports films are a dime a dozen. Just like musical biopics, they follow a strict and unwavering formula that any self-respecting cinephile can predict long before settling in to watch. The key to their success is primarily in the execution of that formula. Thanks to a fantastic cast, a tight script and skillful direction from Julio Quintana, The Long Game is a worthy addition to the tried-and-true genre.

Borderlands Sees Cate Blanchett Channel Escape From New York: ‘It’s Her Favourite Movie’ – Exclusive
It’s not like Cate Blanchett has been averse to blockbuster fare entirely – after all, her career skyrocketed when she played the ethereal Elven queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and she battled Indiana Jones in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. But generally, Blanchett is known for her deep-dive character work – like playing Lydia Tár in TÁR, or Jasmine in Blue Jasmine, or Carol in… well, Carol. As the central Lilith, Blanchett will engage in balletic and bombastic setpieces – a register which chimes with her personal film taste as much as those character dramas. “She loves Escape From New York,” Roth tells Empire. “It’s her favourite movie. But nobody would know that because...

In the weeks since the 2024 Academy Awards, figures throughout Hollywood have continued to declare their support for director Jonathan Glazer. Minutes into the medieval intro of “The Faceless Lady,” a fair maiden rips off her face. You immediately feel a bit nauseated. But did the violence trigger that reaction — or is it the fact that the action seems to be happening somewhere deep in your visual cortex?
“The Faceless Lady,” a collaboration between Meta and producer Eli Roth, is billed as “the first known scripted original VR live action, stereoscopic (3D) series ever produced of its size.” Although it’s designed for the Meta’s Quest headset, the story and scope seem wide enough to exist out of the headset. It’s a complete package that could bring fresh eyes to next-gen storytelling.
The six-episode undertaking, written by Jerome Velinsky and directed by John William Ross, is an escape room spin on ghostly lore. Three twentysomething couples head to the mysterious Kilolc Castle in Ireland to play deadly games for...
