In the grand tapestry of filmmaking, it’s not just the directors, actors, and writers who offer vital contributions. There are also production designers who play a significant role in transporting audiences to an entirely different world through the meticulous craft of production design. But unfortunately, George Lucas will beg to differ, for he holds different opinions on the use of practical sets.

During an old interview at the time of Return of the Jedi, George Lucas is heard sharing his candid views on the filmmaking techniques of contemporary sci-fi directors. While praising their dedication to practical sets, Lucas didn’t shy away from expressing his concerns. But, considering this generation’s two of the greatest sci-fi filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve’s frequent use of practical sets, Lucas’ comments are deemed to spark outrage.

From keeping footprints out of frame to the VFX team having to create a whole technique for the hologram scenes, everything about Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" and its sequel required meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to innovate in order to bring Frank Herbert's 1965 story to life. One of the best examples of this is the Harkonnen arena battle from "Dune: Part Two," in which three Atreides soldiers face off against Austin Butler's vicious warrior Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.
Shot entirely in monochrome, this sequence stands out not only for its distinct visual style but for its intensity and the creeping sense of doom it evokes. As Feyd-Rautha, nephew of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), takes on the captured Atreides soldiers, his unbridled glee at ending their lives and the roars of the Harkonnen crowd establish Butler's...

Though they're undeniably successful, large parts of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies can come off a little bleak. Still, there's no denying the sheer coolness factor of the ornithopters. The aircraft used by House Atreides to traverse the desert landscapes of the planet Arrakis are one of the most memorable elements of the "Dune" aesthetic, combining the form of a dragonfly with elements of helicopter design and producing something so visually striking that Lego has since produced one of the coolest building brick vehicles ever with its ornithopter set.
Production designer Patrice Vermette began working on the ornithopter back in 2018 and drew from a multitude of inspirations, including insects and birds on the natural side of things and helicopters on the more technological side. Once the design had been nailed down, the production team actually built large parts of the 'thopters to allow the "Dune" actors to interact with the hardware.

Before director Denis Villeneuve and production designer Patrice Vermette put their talents to work, "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two" were in danger of being a tad visually monotonous. With the first film in particular, there's only so much you can do aesthetically with a movie that takes place entirely on an arid, desert planet. Still, we did get a look at the Atreides' native planet of Caladan at the top of "Dune," which provided a nice counterpoint to the sepia hues that dominated the rest of the film. For the sequel however, Villeneuve not only ratcheted up the action, but gave us even more of a visual feast.
While "Dune: Part Two" was still somewhat of a bleak blockbuster, most of the gloominess came from the film's finale, in which Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) embraces his ascension to the Emperor's...

"Dune: Part Two" may have been a bit of a bleak blockbuster, but compared to its predecessor, 2021's "Dune," it's positively refulgent. While the first movie spent a lot of time on exposition and establishing the rules of Denis Villeneuve's interpretation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, "Part Two" signals that it's a much more action-packed and visually diverse affair right from the off.
As the film opens, we join a team of Harkonnen hunters on the barren plains of the planet Arrakis. The group are hunting Fremen, the native inhabitants of the desert planet who have recently been joined by Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica. After we witness the villainous cohort evade a potential sandworm attack by way of their anti-gravity packs — a peak sci-fi moment for cinematographer Greig Fraser — they suddenly come...

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. But that didn't mean the look of "Dune" and "Part Two" came exclusively from the book. Production designer Patrice Vermette consulted a wide array of sources, leading to sets...

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has crossed box office milestones and set up director Denis Villenueve to keep the spice flowing with a forthcoming "Dune 3," we can forget all about claims that Frank Herbert's original "Dune" novel was "unfilmable." We no longer need to worry that Villeneuve's adaptation would be too arcane and dense with sci-fi lore to appeal to mass audiences. We can simply take in his "Dune" duology for the breathtaking spectacle that it is.
The "Dune" discourse will likely veer toward the forthcoming threequel and the "Dune: Prophecy" series, set to hit Max this fall, but in the meantime, Villeneuve can simply revel in his latest blockbuster's success. But this isn't just a commercial win for Villeneuve. Sci-fi production design may well have peaked with "Blade Runner." This quote from director Christopher Nolan is a favorite of mine, simply because of how well it sums up the way in which Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, despite its fantastical sci-fi aesthetic, constructs a world that feels real:
"The atmosphere of 'Blade Runner' was also important, that feeling that there was this whole world outside the frame of the scene. You really felt there were things going on outside of those rooms where you've seen the film take place [...] Every film should have its own world, a logic and feel to it that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing."
Nolan has previously spoken about the importance of establishing a "cinematic reality" — evoking a feeling in the audience that what they're seeing, regardless of its factual accuracy, is really happening. It's a trick I think...

The central creative team behind Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two explain how they brought the sci-fi epic to life – and the details you may have missed.
Talking to some of the creative people that helped director Denis Villeneuve bring the spectacular Dune: Part Two to the screen, and certain commonalities emerge. They talk about the scale and the challenge of making a sprawling saga, taking in dozens of central characters and many more extras, a reality. Each talks about how the director’s had a version of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel in his head since he’s a teenager, and that he’s specific and precise about what he wants.
“What’s funny is, Denis has such a sense of vision for this movie,” says costume designer Jacqueline West, who’s worked on both Dune chapters. “He sees the whole movie in his head beforehand, I think. I...

Even if you weren't that big a fan of the bleak blockbuster that was "Dune: Part Two" or the equally bleak whisper-shout fest that was its 2021 predecessor "Dune," you've got to admire the artistry involved. If you take even a brief look at the effort that went into it, conceiving and creating the planet Arrakis was nothing short of an ordeal. Director Denis Villeneuve wasn't going to let "Dune" or its sequel become yet another generic CGI-laden blockbuster affair. Instead, he wanted to convey a real sense of texture and reality, even while bringing to life such fantastical source matter as Frank Herbert's 1965 novel.
There's a reason the visual effects team won an Oscar for the first "Dune." Not only did they manage to convincingly create scale, but they also managed to achieve Villeneuve's aim of making the film feel authentic despite the sheer amount of digital and practical effects work involved.

"Dune: Part Two" is one of the best movies of 2024 and it actually makes the first "Dune" movie from director Denis Villeneuve even better. So it only makes sense that the Lego set inspired by one of the franchise's signature vehicles is one of the best building brick vehicles they've ever produced.
The Lego "Dune" Atreides Royal Ornithopter set brings the aerial vehicle to life with incredible engineering and an impressive wingspan. Lego Designer Michael Psiaki developed it for over a year before getting in touch with Warner Bros. Pictures about releasing the Lego set, which then allowed him to collaborate with production designer Patrice Vermette to ensure that the Lego vehicle was as accurate as possible in building brick form.
Lego sent over their "Dune" Ornithopter set for us to build ourselves, and with a 31-inch wingspan and deployable landing gear, this Lego set was significantly more challenging to build than I originally anticipated.

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has arrived and passed multiple box office milestones, director Denis Villeneuve can claim to have done the impossible and successfully adapted Frank Herbert's "unfilmable" 1965 novel. 2021's "Dune" and the sequel's critical and commercial triumphs are well-earned, too, with Villeneuve and his team delivering a truly epic sci-fi two-parter that immerses viewers in a world that feels at once alien and believably real.
The Oscar-winning effects in "Dune" and its sequel create an impressive sense of scale, but they're also remarkable for achieving such a feat without making the films feel akin to the blockbuster CGI-fests we're used to in the modern age. Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and production designer Patrice Vermette managed to craft a world that feels visceral and convincing throughout, despite the heavy use of visual effects. You’ll be able to own Dune: Part Two on a shiny disc in just a few weeks’ time, as its DVD, 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release is set for the 27th May.
If you’ve been wondering when you’ll be able to own a physical copy of Dune: Part Two on disc, then wonder no longer. Warner Bros has announced that Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi extravaganza is out on DVD and Blu-ray from the 27th May. But you probably knew that from the headline.
The film’s digital release was on the 15th April, which is nice if you like downloading things – it saves shelf space and all that – but for those of us who like discs and boxes and that pleasant sound when a DVD or Blu-ray player drawer closes, it’ll be well worth waiting for a few more weeks.

In narrative time, “Dune: Part Two” starts just three hours after the first “Dune” ends, but the decision to open the film in the middle of an eclipse makes it feel like a completely different world.
During a recent interview for IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve referred to his “idea of the eclipse at the beginning as a tool” to bring an “aesthetic shock” to his sequel. While this choice is motivated by how Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), feel out of place in the desert world of the Fremen, it also gave Villeneuve and his team permission to wipe the color palette clean and choose lighting and camera techniques that cinematographer Greig Fraser called “left of center” in the film’s press notes.

Even if you're not particularly partial to the bleak blockbuster action of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," you've got to respect the craft that went into making the sequel and its predecessor. "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two" are impressive technical achievements that maintain a suitably epic and consistently immersive look throughout, but crafting such majestic visuals wasn't easy.
For "Dune: Part Two," for instance, most of the movie takes place in the desert of the arid, unforgiving planet Arrakis. That meant that Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and production designer Patrice Vermette spent an ungodly amount of time trudging through the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi in search of the perfect sand dune. As such, creating the planet Arrakis for "Dune: Part Two" left Villeneuve "sand traumatized" — and that wasn't the only tough part of the shoot.

In “Dune: Part Two,” the quiet scenes set on the capital planet Kaitain stand in sharp contrast to the Fremen’s fight on the windswept deserts of Arrakis and the black-and-white fascist world of the Harkonnen on Giedi Prime. It’s a juxtaposition the audience can physically feel. As the film cuts to the world of Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken) and his daughter Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), we absorb the peacefulness of nature and serenity of the Emperor’s grounds.

“Desert power.” That’s how Denis Villeneuve teases what’s to come at the end of 2021’s “Dune,” as Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atriedes looks out across the desert in awe as he sees a Fremen person riding a sandworm.
And Villeneuve does not disappoint. The director goes full white-knuckle thrill ride in its sequel, orchestrating a glorious sandworm riding sequence that took 44 days to shoot. It was the most complex thing Villeneuve had ever attempted to do. It needed to feel edgy, dangerous, exciting and real.
It took Villeneuve’s most-trusted collaborators to help him pull off the scene, in which Paul uses the thumper for the first time to draw a sandworm out from beneath the surface and mount the creature as Chani (Zendaya), Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and the Fremen look on.

In a stunning cinematic universe where sand dunes rise like mountains and the fate of galaxies hangs in the balance, Denis Villeneuve’s first voyage into the Frank Herbert’s “Dune” saga clinched six of its 10 Oscar nominations. Yet, in a twist as dramatic as Dr. Wellington killing Duke Leto, Villeneuve found himself overlooked in the best director category — a snub that left fans (and pundits) in disbelief. I dare the Academy’s Directors Branch to make such an omission once again.

It took a village of Denis Villeneuve’s most trusted artisans to pull off “Dune: Part Two’s” epic Harkonnen arena fight scene.
As epic as its predecessor, Villeneuve’s sequel raises the bar with striking visuals. None is more jaw-dropping than Feyd-Rautha’s (Austin Butler) celebration sequence. The grand fight occurs early on in the film as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Lady Margot Fenring (Lea Seydoux) join the inhabitants of Giedi Prime to watch. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision.
Fraser was no stranger to using infrared lighting.
He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

Superbly acted and beautiful to look at, Dune: Part Two is 2024’s first truly great multiplex film from director Denis Villeneuve. Here’s our review:
There’s the old saying that by trying to please everybody, you end up pleasing no one. To his credit, director Denis Villeneuve has somehow managed to forge a path through mainstream filmmaking without sacrificing the understated, arthouse sensibility that has marked out his work since the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Dune: Part Two, like its 2021 opening chapter, may be a space fantasy shot on an IMAX scale, but it’s also every bit as personal, human and intimate as Villeneuve’s earlier, more raw films like Polytechnique (2009) or Incendies (2010). It also might be the most darkly enthralling $190m-plus sci-fi film ever made.
Ahead of Dune: Part Two’s release, there have been some suggestions that it’s possible to watch this film without having seen the first.

At 28, Timothée Chalamet is five years older than he was when he shot Denis Villeneuve’s first iteration of “Dune” (2021), adapted by Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts from Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi saga, which Villeneuve had adored since his early teens and had the sense to split into two parts. That film ran 155 minutes and cost $165 million against a pandemic global gross of $404 million, controversially released day and date by Warner Bros. in theaters and on HBO Max. It scored 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won six craft categories.
Villeneuve, who mixes the sensitivity of an artist with the drive of an ambitious studio director, revels in big-scale epics like 2017’s “Blade Runner 2049” ($260 million worldwide). This time, with “Dune: Part Two,” he has the chance to smash a global blockbuster. Ten minutes longer than “Part One” and budgeted at $190 million, after strike delays, “Part Two” finally explodes in...

Denis Villeneuve movies offer some of the most compelling visuals you'll see in modern filmmaking. "Blade Runner 2049," for instance, somehow managed to evoke the immersive atmosphere and tone of Ridley Scott's original movie while making everything feel larger and even more hauntingly dystopian. Of course, it helps when you work with cinematographers of Roger Deakins' caliber, or production designers such as Patrice Vermette, who won an Oscar for his work on Villeneuve's "Dune." But there's no doubt that, even without his esteemed cohorts, Villeneuve has a unique talent for crafting memorable and evocative visuals.
In fact, the visuals are much more important to Villeneuve than pretty much anything else. Prior to "Dune" the director hadn't written one of his own films since breaking into Hollywood with 2013's "Prisoners." Even "Dune" and its sequel "Dune: Part Two" were co-written with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. All of which...

When "Dune" arrived back in 2021, it was released on Warner Bros.' HBO Max streaming service at the same time it debuted in theaters, which means many will have watched from the comfort of their own home and perhaps missed the truly epic scale of Denis Villenueve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel. Watching from home certainly left me with the sense that while "Dune" was undeniably well-crafted, it was also a little ... bleak. It seems "Dune: Part Two" has maintained the bleakness of the original, but this time, Villenueve's follow-up is getting an exclusively theatrical release. That means that if we want to see the movie when it debuts, we'll have no choice but to witness the grand scale of it in the way the director intended, which should go a long way toward enhancing the experience for many.

Over 15 years since Peter Jackson transported moviegoers to cinematic Middle Earth glory with the triumphant Lord of the Rings trilogy, Denis Villeneuve’s sprawling Dune saga aims to recapture that meticulous world-building spirit and sense of grand fantasy awe. Early reactions indicate March’s Dune: Part Two may achieve just that with the visionary director’s operatic, star-powered sequel earning near-universal raves on par with Jackson’s signature Hobbit highs.

Dune: Part Two is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year and for good reason. With Part One, director Denis Villeneuve brought forth a mesmerizing vision of a psychedelic war epic full of action, drama, and tragedy, while remaining faithful to one of the best and most complex sci-fi novels ever published. Frank Herbert‘s world of scheming, manipulations, combat, prophecies, and drug-induced dreaming comes to life in the desert sands of Villeneuve’s movie. But that film ended on a cliffhanger, with Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the promised messiah of Arrakis, taking only his first steps toward his destiny.
The sequel, then, is the story of Paul’s rise to power, as he must rally the Fremen for his war against House Harkonnen after the destruction of his own great house. It’s also the story of his love affair with Zendaya’s Chani, who will...

The first reactions are in for the first hugely anticipated movie of 2024: Dune 2.
The long-delayed sequel from director Denis Villeneuve continues the story of author Frank Herbert’s space epic and the initial reactions are extremely enthusiastic, with many calling the film a masterpiece of cinema that is even better than Dune.
Dune: Part Two picks up right after the first installment, as Timothée Chalament’s Paul Atreides joins forces with the Fremen and seeks revenge against the enemies who murdered his family, possibly saving the universe along the way.
The film was originally set to release in November 2023, but because of the actors strike, Warner Bros. and Legendary chose to push it to March 2024, so that its star-studded cast, which also includes Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh, would be able to promote it.

Dune: Part Two made its world premiere in London today, and the first reactions to the highly anticipated sequel on social media are extremely positive, but I doubt that comes as a surprise to anyone.
In a shock to no one, I absolutely loved #Dune2. Incredible filmmaking. Brilliant score. Entire cast was excellent. My only complaint was I wish it was longer. Not joking around. The movie is 2hr and 40 min(?) and I would have been happy to watch another hour. pic.twitter.com/6PZmfQTEAH

Dare I say it's a perfect film. Better than the first one. All the character build-up, storyline, & worldbuilding massively pays off in the third act. A third act that left me speechless and in awe. Yeah, I loved it. #Dune2 #FilmTwitter pic.twitter.com/1ga8Oi6StG

Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” has finally been unveiled and film journalists are showering the highly-anticipated sequel with praise for its incredible ensemble cast, breathtaking visual effects and more. The film, which follow’s 2021’s “Dune,” is being called “masterful,” “damn impressive” and full of battle scenes that rival Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.”
“‘Dune: Part Two’ is damn impressive,” wrote The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood. “Villeneuve crafts some truly Visionary moments. Austin Butler gives a truly transformative performance (and not talking makeup either). Very moving ending. A wee bit long? Yes. Did I forget I saw it the next day? Yes. Still, gonna be massive.”

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was a miracle – a gorgeous, intelligent blockbuster that took us to a startling new world. Now, as he puts the finishing touches to Dune: Part Two, he tells us how everything’s about to get weirder… and wormier.
On the planet Arrakis — or the deserts standing in for it, at least — three men were searching. Hunting. For the perfect type of sand.
Arrakis, home to the Spice, is felt in every breath of Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel. An inhospitable, barren world, home to humongous worms and winds that can cut metal, its unique character forms the heart of the entire story. Which is why, for Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser and production designer Patrice Vermette spent an inordinate amount of time trekking through the desert and staring at tiny yellow grains.
“For my mise-en-scène, I’ll want a particular shaped dune.

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.

[The following story contains spoilers from Foe.]
In Garth Davis’ new genre mashup, Foe, the future of the planet — and a relationship — hinges, in part, on the possibilities around artificial intelligence in response to climate change.
The Amazon Studios film, which is set to release globally on Oct. 6, is based on author and co-writer Iain Reid’s 2018 novel of the same name. Set in the near, climate-devastated future, one couple living on a remote farm becomes a test subject for humanity’s survival.
The book has garnered a wide range of genre descriptors — psychological thriller, horror, science fiction, to name a few — and the film aims to live in each one, sometimes simultaneously. Yet, for writer-director Davis, who spoke about the making of the film in a post-screening discussion at the 2023 New York Film Festival, he not only found “the book completely compelling in its mystery” but was ultimately attracted to the relationship between Saoirse Ronan...

As much as we here at /Film like to climb up on our soapboxes and carry on about the limits of The Volume and the StageCraft technology (which generate virtual settings using LED video walls), we also get why filmmakers have been flocking to use them in recent years. When you shoot outside on-location, you're inevitably subject to the whims of the natural environment. That means, for example, having to spend hours waiting for rainstorms or a cloudy sky to clear up just so you can get the precise lighting you need for a scene. It's even worse if you're filming in the desert. All it takes is a huge sandstorm to swoop in, and you may find yourself having to rebuild most of your sets.
Shooting in the desert can present other complications too, as director Denis Villeneuve discovered while bringing the desert world of Arrakis to life for "Dune.

Christopher Nolan’s biopic “Oppenheimer” has already grossed over $270 million domestically, setting a number of records both for the filmmaker and in general. There’s been a lot of talk about its Oscar potential next year, so it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty in the below-the-line crafts categories where it is likely to get nominations, as well as its primary competition in those races.
The presence of “Dune: Part Two” — unless Warner Bros. moves it due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes — hangs over “Oppenheimer” like a dark Oscar cloud. The first “Dune” won six Oscars in early 2022, all in craft and technical categories, only missing out on two of its nominations there for Best Costume Design (which went to “Cruella“) and for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (which went to “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”). Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.
With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the eight films we expect to be the strongest contenders across the three categories.

Dune: Part Two is coming into focus, with filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya showing off a new trailer for the Warner Bros. and Legendary sequel at CinemaCon Tuesday.
“Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic, war movie. It is much more dense. We went to all new locations,” said Villeneuve. “I didn’t want a feeling of repititon. It’s all new sets. Everyting is new.”
He also said that while 40 percent of the first film was shot in Imax, 100 percent of this film was shot in Imax.
“In the first movie, Paul is a student,” said Chalamet of his character, Paul Atreides. “We really see Paul Atrides become a leader … become a redeemer of the Fremen people in a sense.”

From its opening narration, it is clear that Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" is not going to be like the previous adaptations. From dialogue choices to strong visuals and a change in focus from the political to the more intimately emotional, this is a film that is both meticulously faithful and also unafraid to reinterpret what's on the page.
It is perhaps the visuals that truly make this movie stand out among the other adaptations of Frank Herbert's "Dune" — and also the many, many sci-fi movies inspired by it. Villeneuve's film is one of exquisitely lavish production design that is intricate in detail and vibrant in imagination. From the massive sets to the look of the sandworm and the many ships, which don't look like anything we've seen before. This last bit was particularly tricky since we've already seen countless adaptation attempts, from Lynch's movie to the Sci-Fi...
