May ended up being more than a bit of a letdown at the box office, yet the summer movie season continues on with three more major franchise sequels (or prequels) and a few other attempts at variety. Read on for Gold Derby’s June 2024 box office preview.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

Hollywood actors often have their careers reduced to one major role. Having said that, isn’t it compelling how an iconic character like Batman can bring an actor everlasting fame, but also conceal the breadth of their versatility? Val Kilmer, known widely for donning the dark mask of the Caped Crusader, embodies this paradox with remarkable grace.
Prior to making his breakthrough in the 1980s with roles in comedies such as Real Genius and Top Secret, Val Kilmer began his acting career on stage. The acclaimed sequel to Top Gun, in which he reprised the role of Iceman, has brought him back into the spotlight.
Val Kilmer as Batman in Batman Forever | Warner Bros Pictures
Despite his early breakthrough, Kilmer charted a different course, circling the universe of TV—save for a voice role as Kitt in the Knight Rider reboot and brief stints on shows like Ghost Girls and The Spoils of Babylon.

Amidst several releases this month, The Strangers: Chapter 1 certainly emerged as an unexpected contender. It is, in fact, one of the films people expected to shine the least, and yet the opposite is true. Despite initial skepticism, the film’s robust opening day performance signifies a promising start, capturing audience attention and defying expectations.
Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez in The Strangers: Chapter 1 | Lionsgate Movies
While dealing with a lot of criticism and mixed reviews, it now seems that it is steering steadily forward on a path of potential success. The film’s surprising success has undoubtedly left some fans shocked, especially considering its competition in the race for the box office, which includes John Krasinski’s brainchild, If, and the already-running Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and the Ryan Gosling starrer, The Fall Guys.

In A Quiet Place Part One, we witnessed the aftermath of the alien invasion, with some flashbacks interspersed with the “Death Angels” arrival on the meteorites, emergence and the subsequent non-stop attacks on anything that made even the slightest noise. We came to love the Abbott family and mourned when husband and father Lee Abbott was killed when saving his children from the claws of the monsters.
In A Quiet Place Part II, audiences saw The Abbott family and their little town decimated. As the Abbotts, Evelyn and her children, hunt for any viable refuge from the sounds that draw the omnipresent creatures, they stumble upon an old acquaintance turned into a determined loner whose past makes it difficult for them to trust his true intentions. This is Emmett portrayed by Cillian Murphy. As was briefly referenced in Part II in a conversation between Murphy (Emmett) and Djimon Hounsou (Man...

This Fall, Academy Award winning superstars George Clooney (Ocean's Eleven; Up in the Air; Gravity) and Brad Pitt (Fight Club; Bullet Train; Babylon) reunite for the first time in sixteen years for director Jon Watts' next film, the action-comedy Wolfs.
Sony Pictures Releasing and Apple Studios have launched the film's official trailer, which previews one of this fall's most exciting releases as the actors play a pair of fixers who find themselves partnered up on a job that gets wilder and wilder by the minute.
In the film, "Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected."

With parts of post-apocalyptic alien invasion, home invasion, thriller, and horror genre elements, “A Quiet Place” was definitely a surprise franchise. Directed by John Krasinski and released in 2018, the Hitchcockian thriller about aliens who have invaded Earth and fed off sound, forcing the world to remain as silent as possible, was a smash upon its arrival that year and quickly spawned an unexpected franchise. “A Quiet Place Part II” arrived in 2020 with the remaining cast from the first film: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, plus Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou.

Hollywood has no shortage of iconic duos, but when it comes to action and comedy, there is nobody like Brad Pitt and George Clooney. From their first collaboration in 2001 to now, the actors have remained good friends. Yet it has been 16 long years since they starred together on the big screen.

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Box Office (Worldwide): Debut Weekend Collection Update, Earned Significantly Less Than Mad Max: Fury Road(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has underperformed at the box office, and the actual numbers are here. George Miller directed the film, which features Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth as the lead actors. It is both a prequel and a Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off. Keep scrolling for more.
It was a long weekend; the movie got an extra holiday due to Memorial Day. It clashed with The Garfield Movie at the box office, and it was a close fight between the two films for the #1 spot. Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. Mad Max: Fury Road made a total of $379 million worldwide, a number that the prequel will likely have a hard time equalling unless word of mouth and repeat business are strong. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.

On February 14, 2024, Pedro Pascal was confirmed to be playing Reed Richards in Marvel Studios' upcoming "Fantastic Four" movie (/Film broke this fantastic scoop early).
More recently, reporting has claimed that before Pascal was locked in, British actor Rahul Kohli was in the running to play Reed. Kohli had been a popular fancasting choice for Reed Richards -- much like John Krasinski, who ended up playing a Reed variant in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." /Film even named Kohli as one of the actors we'd prefer to see play Mister Fantastic more than Krasinski. So, the idea that he came close to getting the part created intrigue.
But it's not true; Kohli was not in the running to play Mister Fantastic (at least outside fans' hearts and minds). The news sparked after a recent interview between Kohli and Salaam Nerds. During said interview, Kohli acknowledged the fancasts of him...

This weekend, the box office looked more like a Wasteland than the fruitful Green Place of Many Mothers.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” underperformed in its box office debut with $25.6 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Instead of ruling the box office as expected, it’s in a shockingly close race for first place with Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie,” which collected $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the four days. Neither could salvage the holiday weekend, which is the worst it’s been in nearly three decades.
It wasn’t just domestic audiences that failed to show up for “Furiosa.” The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its worldwide tally to $58.9 million. Updated: Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was greeted with a very warm reception during its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in an early showcase last week, and amid much love for franchise architect George Miller. It has followed up with strong critical and social scores. Nevertheless, in this currently wonky theatrical landscape, the prequel underperformed in its global opening this launch weekend, grossing $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.
That includes $33.3M from overseas play and $25.6M from domestic; the latter for its Friday-Sunday. We are waiting on confirmation of the four-day North American number given the domestic holiday on Monday.
Yes, we expected higher when we did our preview earlier this week, and perhaps the industry as a whole was praying too much at the feet of this origin story. It’s undeniably got some amazing action.
Important to recall that while we think of 2015’s rock-and-roll...

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories. The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series has generated $58.9 million globally in its first weekend of release, a rough start given its $168 million production budget.
Domestically, the Warner Bros. prequel “Furiosa” is closely battling Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts, with each grossing roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Whichever lands at No. 1, this ranks as one of the worst Memorial Day holiday weekends in decades.
“Furiosa,” at this rate, will struggle to live up to its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.” That film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, captured $380 million against a similarly big budget. Though the R-rated prequel, which puts the spotlight on Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, has been widely embraced by critics and audiences,...

Imperator Furiosa has battled ruthless kidnappers, raider attacks and maniacal warlords as she traverses a lawless Wasteland. And yet her fiercest adversary, at least today, seems to be a lazy cat who loves lasagna.

Months ago, Marvel Studios unveiled the actors set to portray the core characters in the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot. Pedro Pascal was selected to embody Reed Richards, while Vanessa Kirby was cast as Sue Storm. Joseph Quinn will portray the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will bring The Thing to life. Additionally, Julia Garner will play Shalla-Bal, the MCU’s version of Silver Surfer.
The casting stirred controversy, with much of the criticism aimed at Garner’s portrayal of Silver Surfer. Pedro Pascal also faced scrutiny, with some fans expressing doubt about his suitability for the role of Mr. Fantastic, still holding onto the idea of John Krasinski as Reed Richards.
During a recent interview with Salaam Nerds, Rahul Kohli disclosed that he was in contention for the role but ultimately lost out to the star of ‘The Last of Us.’ He described his feelings about the loss as fluctuating from day to day.

The bad times at the summer box office just keep coming this weekend, as George Miller's post-apocalyptic road epic "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" lines up a historic low for the Memorial Day weekend. After grossing $10.2 million on its opening day (including previews), "Furiosa" is on track for a dismal $31 million four-day weekend (per The Wrap), significantly below the $45.4 million three-day debut of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015. The good news is that "Furiosa" is in a close battle with "The Garfield Movie" for the No. 1 spot. That's the next "Mad Max" spin-off right there! (Jon Arbuckle's Wasteland name would be Jizzboy the Gronk.)

It’s been more than 10 years since NBC’s mockumentary sitcom The Office came to its end, but one of its actors can boast of having a home decor that reminds them of the show all the time.
With all the numerous memories created throughout the time of The Office’s several-years-long run, it was surely hard for everyone there to just let it go forever, and John Krasinski was the one who found a way out.
While promoting his brand new fantasy comedy If, Krasinski made an appearance on the Office Ladies podcast run by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey who he starred alongside in The Office.
Not missing such an opportunity to reminisce about their time on the show’s set, Krasinski, who portrayed Jim in the series, revealed that he’d felt quite emotional on the last day of filming saying that it “was just the scariest,...

The early box office results are in over at Deadline, and oh boy, are they dire or what? As of right now, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga seems poised to win the weekend by a razor’s edge, with it on track for a three-day gross in the range of $27-28 million and about $31 million for the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The Garfield Movie is right behind with $24 million, with Deadline predicting that it could theoretically win the four-day weekend thanks to matinees on Monday. It is set to make $30-32 million over the holiday. We had predicted $40 million for Furiosa and $35 million for Garfield.
It has to be said, the box office take this Memorial Day weekend is an all-out disaster. How bad is it? Whichever movie wins, Furiosa or The Garfield Movie, the winner will have the lowest Memorial Day gross for a movie in...

It’s a bit of a wasteland out there for theaters this summer, as Memorial Day weekend is closing out a very underwhelming May on a down note. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is projected to open well short of the industry’s prior estimates for a $40 million-plus bow over the four-day window. The high-budget action epic is practically neck-and-neck for first place over Sony’s animated adaptation “The Garfield Movie” on domestic charts.
The fireball “Mad Max” prequel sputtered to $10.2 million from 3,804 locations across Friday and preview screenings. It’s got Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums to bolster its ticket sales, too. It’s another tough underperformance this summer. The film’s 2015 predecessor “Mad Max: Fury Road” got to $16 million in its opening day. That movie also put together an impressive awards season run and got canonized by action genre fans. Even so, “Furiosa” seems unable...

What’s Good: Some of the action is fun in a cheesy way, and the movie doesn’t know when to hold on to its unhinged energy.
What’s Bad: The acting is awful across the board, and great actors like Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong are wasted.
Loo Break: You could take a break at any point, and you wouldn’t be missing much, as the film’s twist is just too predictable and there are no action or character moments worth waiting for.
Watch or Not?: This film is an overall pass. There are better offerings out there, especially with Furiosa and Dune still playing in theaters.

The year was predicted to look pretty bleak with a number of major tentpoles being delayed due to the dual union strikes from the Writers’ Guild and the Actors’ Guild from late last year. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some big releases, as some films were still ready to go for the summer. The past few weeks have seen a steamy character drama with Challengers, an action comedy with two stars from last year’s Barbenheimer sensation with The Fall Guy, the powers of Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski teaming up for a cutesy family film with If and a CGI-filled action epic from an established franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Two of the films from these past weeks have already been made available on digital platforms — Challengers and The Fall Guy.

Besides giving star-studded performances as Thanos in (majorly) Marvel’s Avengers film series, Cable in Deadpool 2, and Gurney Halleck in the Dune lore, one of Josh Brolin’s most unforgettable roles is from his series from 2022, Outer Range. Displaying his brilliant acting prowess as Royal Abbott in it, he won everyone’s hearts with this critically approved sci-fi Western drama as well.

Before the series’ release, there was quite a bit of buzz that it might feel like it was piggybacking Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone saga. However, Brolin was quick to shut all of that down with a disagreeing statement that made it evident that besides a few necessary factors required in Western projects, perhaps nothing was similar between these two masterpieces of different universes.

The latter, Cal (Ryan Reynolds) introduces Bea to the creature called Blue (Steve Carrell), who is revealed to be an imaginary friend (IFs), which only they can see. Bea and Cal begin a journey of trying to reunite IFs with their previous owners.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has launched development on What Kids Want, a new feature scripted by the Like a Boss duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, sources tell Deadline.
The film follows up the high concept comedies What Women Want (2000), starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and What Men Want (2019), starring Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan, both of which were distributed by Paramount. While the former centered on a man suddenly gifted (or cursed?) with the ability to hear the thoughts of women, the latter reversed the equation. The new film will, of course, involve a look into the minds of children.
Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo for Little Engine Entertainmemt. Matthews comes to the project after producing What Women Want, along with such rom-coms as 13 Going on 30, All My Life (alongside Garner) and Isn’t It Romantic?...

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...
There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.
Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

Steve Carell has been responsible for some of the funniest characters on the big and small screen this century. Brick Tamland in Anchorman, Michael Scott in The Office, Gru in Despicable Me, Mark R. Naird in Space Force — the list goes on. Now, per THR's reporting, Carell is set to add another notch to his funnyman belt with a starring role in a new HBO comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Scrubs' Matt Tarses.
The victor of a multi-platform bidding war, HBO have ordered the as-yet-untitled show straight-to-series, with a 10-episode first season in development. Lawrence and Tarses, who are currently hard at work on Apple TV's upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy series Bad Monkey, are set to write the first episode of this show, a single-camera comedy set on a college campus that centres around the complicated relationship between an author (presumably Carell) and his daughter.

John Krasinski’s “If” presents a menagerie of celebrity-voiced imaginary friends who are in search of existential purpose after their kids grow up and forget them. Enter Ryan Reynolds, who runs a matchmaking service for the “IFs,” who live in a secluded retirement home at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park in Coney Island.
Framestore handled the audacious fusion of live-action and CG animation and VFX (800 shots) spread across their London, Montreal, and Mumbai studios. Led by animation director Arslan Elver and VFX supervisor Chris Lawrence, the team worked closely with director-actor Krasinski to get believable performances out of the IFs on set or in post. Krasinski saw them as visceral, hyper-real puppets. The techniques included stand-ins to help the voice actors deliver full performances, placing the animated characters in the shot with VR, or the use of home-shot reference footage from the animators.

It has been a sobering year for the movie industry, particularly when looking at the state of the box office. We entered 2024 knowing it was likely going to be a down year compared to 2023, when domestic ticket sales topped $9 billion for the first time since the pandemic began. Unfortunately, it's been worse than expected. Ticket sales are pacing more than 20% behind this same point in 2023 and there is little hope on the horizon. So, what can be done to provide hope for Hollywood? In short, people need to start going to the movies more. How we get to that point is a big, complicated question for another time. But what would it take to get the box office back to a healthy place in the pandemic era? That's a question we can at least try to tackle.

Not to sound like a broken record but it was yet another brutal weekend at the box office as May rolls right along. Director John Krasinski's big-budget, family-friendly flick "If" topped the charts with a worse-than-expected opening. Theaters are desperate for a breakout hit given the relatively lackluster performances of other films like "The Fall Guy" in the early going. But, as has been the case so many times in the pandemic era, horror came to the rescue — sort of. Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 1" had a solid debut, but not so much that it can make up for what was lacking elsewhere. It was also an iffy start for a film that is launching an entire trilogy.
Director Renny Harlin's new take on "The Strangers" (the first part of it anyway) opened to an estimated $12 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts behind "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...
