Despite Hollywood's box office haul being generally disappointing this year, the "Planet of the Apes" franchise is proving to be surprisingly resilient.
Seven years after "War for the Planet of the Apes" concluded the Caesar trilogy on a critical high note as one of the most significant blockbusters of the decade, director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" has managed to hold strong and bring back the same audience that turned the previous films into box office success stories. To that end, the film crossed a major milestone this past weekend, sailing past the $300 million mark worldwide on what was otherwise an abysmal few days for theaters.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, "Kingdom" pulled in another $8.9 million, staying at fourth place on the charts. It landed just below John Krasinski's "If" ($10.5 million) and well above Universal's "The Fall Guy" ($4.1 million), which has already...

In a galaxy far, far away, where apes reign supreme, director Wes Ball appears to be planning on revolutionizing the Planet of the Apes franchise by transforming it into a sprawling sci-fi saga akin to Star Wars. Going bigger and better with each film, shooting for the stars seems to be the only possibility awaiting the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel.

Although the plan hasn’t been officially confirmed, it seems the only possible outcome, considering how the concept of space and extraterrestrial happenings has been a recurring part of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Further, considering Wes Ball’s desire to steer the franchise towards the 1968 original movie, a route through the cosmos seems the only way.

2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes brought about a resounding change in the franchise’s universe and appeared to mark an end to the saga. However, the 2022 Wes Ball directorial, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has expanded the lore further ahead by as much as three centuries after the end of its previous installment, and with a new working order that has apes as the dominant species on the planet and humans reduced to a feral state.

At a time when the flick is surging ahead at the global box office with the likes of Freya Allan spearheading its cast, it also has not forgotten its roots. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted numerous connections between the current movie’s central characters and Caesar, the ape from the first 2011 movie who kick-started the lore in the first place.

Maidaan Had A Disastrous Run Overseas With Low Box Office Numbers(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan has finished the match at the box office with a final collection of 54 crore in India and 71 crore worldwide. The film was made on a reported budget of around 100 crore and served as a disaster at the box office. But now, guess where the film was flawed majorly?
Maidaan Overseas Collection
Well, it was definitely overseas. Despite being a sports drama, Ajay Devgn‘s film, helmed by Amit Sharma, failed to entertain audiences globally, and it collected only 7.75 – 8.25 crore overseas. Despite having a clash with Akshay Kumar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, this was a grossly low number.
Maidaan earned 71.52 crore globally. If the film would have performed in a substantially better way overseas, it would have garnered much better numbers overseas and probably pushed itself towards the 100 crore mark at the box office.

Box Office – Bhaiyya Ji does fair on Monday, needs to be stable right through the weekdays now(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Over the weekend, Bhaiyya Ji put on a fight of sorts as collections continued to rise from Friday to Sunday. While the opening day had resulted in 1.44 crores coming in, Saturday had grown well to 2.01 crores, and then, Sunday, too, had seen a bit of a push with 2.40 crores being collected. The collections could have comfortably stretched to 2.75 crores, but the all-important Ipl finals meant that the footfalls were impacted significantly.
Hence, all eyes were on how Monday would turn out to be. Had this been a multiplex content movie like Srikanth, the Sunday shortfall would have been covered since this segment of audiences does frequent films on the late evening and night shows as well. However at single screens, where Bhaiyaaji primarily brings in audiences, the situation is a...

Box Office – Srikanth has excellent hold on Monday, stays over 1 crore mark(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Srikanth is continuing to say over the 1 crore mark. This happened on the 18th day in theatres, and that’s an achievement in itself that it has already travelled so far and is still collecting. One would have otherwise expected the collections to go below 1 crore on the third Friday itself, but then the film has managed to keep running well so far.
The film brought in 1.03 crore more, and this is a very good number as it’s not far off from Friday’s collections of 1.18 crore. The hold has been excellent, and the best part is that there would be very good consistency from here till Thursday, with very good chances of collections not going below 75 lakhs mark. Of course, collecting 1 crore on a daily basis would have a good ring to it...

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Aavesham Budget & Box Office Returns(Photo Credit –IMDb)
It’s been a fantastic year so far for the Malayalam film industry and Fahadh Faasil has given a significant contribution from his side. His Aavesham has emerged as a huge success at the box office and is still running in theatres despite arriving on the Ott platform. Carrying a good enough budget, the film has exceeded all expectations and is enjoying impressive returns in the domestic market. Keep reading to know more!
Released on 11th April, the film has been in theatres for over a month now. There was a decent buzz around the film in the pre-release buzz, but the actual product turned out to be more appealing and entertaining. Right from the performances of Fahadh Faasil and others, the direction of Jithu Madhavan to the music of Sushin Shyam, almost every department received praise of critics as well as audiences.

[This story contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.]
Kevin Durand is all smiles right now. The Thunder Bay native doesn’t have the energy of an actor who’s nearly three decades into their career. If you didn’t know any better, his enthusiasm would lead you to believe that he’s a wide-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomer. With recent projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Abigail and the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, it’s understandable why Durand is savoring this moment that harks back to when Lost introduced his unforgiving mercenary Martin Keamy in season four (2008).
With Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes outperforming opening weekend box office expectations at $58.4 million, the long-term outlook for the sci-fi franchise is rather sunny right now, and despite his cliff-falling ending, Durand is not ruling out a return for his baddie, Proximus Caesar.

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

Seven years after the last chapter, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes embarks on a new journey in this epic franchise. Directed by Wes Ball, the film takes an ambitious leap forward with a daring reboot, massive time jump, and all-new characters. The standout quality that critics unanimously praise is its visual effects, noted to be on par with Avatar. According to numerous reviews, Kingdom exhibits an impressive mix of digital imagery and motion capture technology, reminiscent of James Cameron’s epic. “Rife with impressive computer-generated magic,” as one critic put it. Heading into theatres, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes had huge shoes to fill, as the modern trilogy, which concluded seven years back, set the bar pretty high. Although this entry in the IP doesn’t continue the trend of stepping up with each new release, which is reasonable considering how great the last one was, it’s still a worthy continuation of the franchise.
While not physically present in the film, Wes Ball did an impeccable job of capturing Caesar’s spirit and his influence, and the director didn’t drop the ball with the franchise’s new protagonist, Noa. Although the director confirmed that both Noa and Caesar are connected, it’s not the way that many would’ve assumed.

When 20th Century Fox began production on the first "Planet of the Apes" film, they enlisted special effects makeup artist John Chambers to help transform actors like Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, and James Whitmore into anthropomorphic apes. Chambers was already famous for having perfected Spock's Vulcan ears on "Star Trek," but a society of intelligent apes who were capable of communicating was like something straight out of "The Twilight Zone." Rather than create ape masks, Chambers instead crafted individual prosthetic pieces to be applied in sections, allowing the actors to emote with their own facial muscles -- a technique that revolutionized the art of special effects makeup.
Now, over 50 years later, the intelligent apes have traded practical makeup prosthetics in favor of breathtaking and realistic digital artistry. When it comes to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," /Film's Larry Fried declared, "There is simply no...

Paramount will keep its chin up high amid the whole Sony and Skydance takeover headlines and keep the summer box office churnin’ with the John Krasinski-directed/scripted/produced Ryan Reynolds-led family movie, If, which is hoping to hit $40M. This is after Disney’s overperformance with 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which posted a $58.4M opening.
If‘s m.o. is to be a five-quad movie appealing to everyone from 2 to 80. It’s been awhile since the marketplace has had a PG-rated live-action original movie, hence if the studio hits $40M on this $110M production, celebrate it.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has had fans of the franchise hooked ever since its release. The film acts as a fresh take on the iconic film series, following a world long after the events of the War of the Planet of the Apes. It also has an exceptional cast of actors, as well as Wes Ball as its director.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
The film paid homage to the original Planet of the Apes in many ways, having several scenes reminiscent of the classic. While many fans thought this would end their affair, the director seems to have other intentions. Could the Charlton Heston classic get a sequel almost 60 years after its release?
A Revival of the Planet of the Apes?
Wes Ball recently gave an interview with IndieWire, where he talked about his recently released film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters with an impressive box-office opening which all but guarantees we haven’t seen the last of those damn dirty apes. It remains to be seen how many more sequels we’ll get, but Planet of the Apes franchise producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who also wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, told THR that they originally envisioned a nine movie arc for the modern franchise.
“When you first came up with this idea, the Apes franchise way back, you saw nine movies,” Silver said. “We thought, ‘This is crazy ambitious.’ But here we are. We’re at four.“
“I saw nine. I don’t know if we’ll make it to nine. I would love it,” Jaffa replied. “We’ve spoken to not just [director Wes Ball, writer...

In a much-needed bit of good news for the box office in 2024, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" had a very solid opening weekend. Hailing from Disney's 20th Century Studios, the latest entry in the long-running sci-fi franchise opened to $58.5 million domestically. That figure is $2 million above the $56.5 million estimates that hit the boards on Sunday. That's good news, as it suggests word of mouth was strong out of Friday and Saturday screenings heading into Mother's Day.
Director Wes Ball's film took in an additional $72.7 million from overseas markets to date, giving it a $131.2 million global start. That is even higher than 2017's "War for the Planet of the Apes" ($130 million), meaning it's the best worldwide opening for the modern "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Now, it's still got a very long way to go to get anywhere near the outsized global total of 2014's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes...

While promoting the new Garfield animated pic, Chris Pratt briefly touched on his past performance as the princess-saving Brooklyn plumber, Mario.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unexpected blockbuster, as it went on to set the record for biggest global opening for an animated movie.
After everything was said and done, the movie made $1.362 billion globally on a meager $100 million production budget. That feat made The Super Mario Bros. Movie the most financially successful film of 2023, according to Deadline Hollywood.
A sequel was officially announced on March 10, 2024, as part of Mario Day celebrations and given an April 3, 2026 release date.

Apes box office strong!
20th Century Studios/Disney's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is off to a great start at the global box office after exceeding expectations with a $130M+ opening weekend.
Despite positive reviews, the latest Apes adventure received a disappointing "B" CinemaScore, which suggested that audiences may not be quite as taken with the movie as the majority of critics. Even so, Kingdom managed to take $58.5 million in North America and $72.7 million overseas for a worldwide start of $131.2 million.
This puts the film ahead of Sunday’s domestic estimates of $56.5 million to give it the third-best opening of the year to date, as well as the second-best launch of the franchise after Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes back in 2014.
The movie has a reported budget of $160 million.

Matt Reeves believed that he was going to be fired from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when he suggested one crucial change to the plot point. He was brought in to helm the film in October 2012 after Rupert Wyatt, the first film’s director, dropped out of the project. Reeves suggested telling the story from Caesar’s point of view and beginning the film during the creation of ape civilization rather than in a post-apocalyptic world.
Matt Reeves suggested some radical changes for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when he took over the film
However, the studio trusted Reeves’ creative vision and allowed him to tell the story he intended. It became one of the best decisions by the studio as Reeves ended up making the highest-grossing film in the Planet of the Apes franchise.

That means every piece of bark, every leaf blowing in the wind is full CG. So that's new for this move, this franchise. But the studio can put the ghosts of the MCU to bed (for now at least) and celebrate a success that acts as a much-needed succor to the team – the blockbuster opening week of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters, which means key plot details have begun to find their way online.
In a new interview with THR, star Freya Allan (Mae) discusses the ending and how the original conclusion played out in far less subtle - and quite a bit darker - fashion.
Major spoilers follow.
During the climactic battle, Mae makes a fateful decision to blow open the floodgates and destroy the human tech the villainous Proximus was trying to get his hands on, killing hundreds of apes in the process.
“It’s not what she wants to do," Allan explains. "But it’s that, or Proximus has all these weapons and humanity is screwed. She’s gone through so much, she’s lost all the people she cares about, which was a large part of how I justified everything that she did,” Allan says. “So...

Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” climbed to $72.5 million at the international box office in its first weekend of release.
The newest film in the long-running “Apes” series also notched No. 1 in North America with $58.5 million, bringing its initial global tally to a promising $131 million. Those ticket sales were above Sunday’s projections of $56.5 million domestically and $129 million worldwide. Like its predecessors, the $160 million-budgeted “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is projected to earn the bulk of its revenues at the international box office.
Overseas, the movie enjoyed the biggest start in China with $11.4 million (a lackluster debut for the territory), France with $7.1 million, Mexico with $6.4 million and the United Kingdom with $4.8 million. Other top markets were Korea ($3.2 million), Australia ($2.7 million), Brazil ($2.6 million), Germany (2.2 million) and Spain ($2.2 million).
Audiences opted to watch the film in the best possible quality as premium formats represented 41% of global box office revenues.

Updated: Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $58.5 million in its first weekend of release.
That’s ahead of Sunday’s estimates of $56.8 million and enough to score the third-best opening of the year behind “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
Inaugural sales for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” landed above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and towered over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).
