Exclusive: Global TV and film studio Sister is gearing up for a string of projects to hit the small and big screens and today might well see the launch of its most daring.
Netflix’s Eric about a desperate father battling his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son features Benedict Cumberbatch and a custom-made seven foot puppet, which is visible only to Cumberbatch’s character, the flawed Vincent. Abi Morgan’s six-part series ties together themes of belonging, addiction, loss and police brutality in a familiar setting. It was described as Sesame Street meets Taxi Driver by one British reviewer, although Sister creative chief Jane Featherstone compared it in scope and theme to Steven Spielberg’s Et.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Featherstone said the show is testament to the Chernobyl and This is Going to Hurt studio’s commitment to taking a talent-first approach.

In another of his Romford Film Festival interviews, Kevin sits down to chat with the cast and crew of powerful and impressive short movie Under the Blue. Directors Linda Ludwig and James Curle bring along their leads Steph Parry and Ed White.
A true-story police drama starring Steph Parry (Malpractice), Ed White (Tár) and TV-star Nicola Walker with a unique sound design by Joe Beal (BAFTA-winner Chernobyl). This slow-burn film, which is now qualified for BIFA-entry, explores appreciation and unlikely connections, whether we consider “the person underneath”.
Bruised, hungry and only halfway through her late shift, a lonely and disillusioned police officer forms an unlikely connection with an appreciative and thankful criminal.

The “Dune” universe is expanding to TV, and going way, way back in time to do it.
During Warner Bros.’ Upfront presentation on Wednesday, HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys introduced the first teaser for “Dune: Prophecy,” a prequel series spinoff of the hit sci-fi film franchise. The six-episode season will premiere on Max this fall.
“Dune: Prophecy” is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert (son of original “Dune” series author Frank Herbert) and Kevin J. Anderson. Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides (Timotheé Chalamet), the series tells the story of the founding of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive, all-female (until Paul Atreides) order of superhuman power brokers who advise leaders and influence world events.
It follows sisters Valya (Oscar and Emmy nominee Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) as they fight forces that threaten humanity’s future and create what becomes the Bene Gesserit.

Cameras have been rolling on The Last of Us season 2 for a while now, and we finally have some semi-decent set photos. These offer fans a first look at Bella Ramsey's Ellie with her girlfriend, Dina (played by Madame Web and Superman star Isabela Merced).
We're going to tread carefully here for fear of spoilers, but those of you who have played The Last of Us Part II video game will likely be able to figure out where in the season this sequence likely takes place.
As you can see below, Ellie and Dina are on horseback and outside the Weston's Pharmacy building.
While some fans have argued that Ramsey still looks too young, she's now 20 and it's been close to two years since shooting wrapped on season 1. These episodes will provide Ramsey with a lot of heavy material to seek her teeth into, though we're confident the Game of Thrones...

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" just made its way to theaters, but MonsterVerse fans who want to keep the kaiju goodness going will want to listen up. The folks at Waxwork Records have announced a special release of the film's soundtrack on vinyl, which you can pre-order as we speak. Much like the film itself, it is colorful and overflowing with monster madness. Oh, and it comes with a 12x12 art print.
The "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" original motion pictures soundtrack features all 23 tracks from the score for the film. The original music was composed by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie Xl, who previously created music for Zack Snyder's "Justice League" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Holkenborg teamed up with composer Antonio Di Iorio ("Godzilla vs Kong") to craft an appropriately epic score for director Adam Wingard's kaiju brawl. Holkenborg had this to say about it:...

Trust issues: The UK’s fabled drama production community has been beset by short- and long-term issues in recent times. While Mr Bates Vs the Post Office has reminded everyone how a good scripted show can cut through, that knowledge isn’t much of a comfort to ailing freelancers whose expertize doesn’t always feel as valued as it should be. And it is freelancers who are at the center of a major six-month investigation into “suspected anti-competitive behavior” at a number of the country’s biggest drama powerhouses. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced the probe back in October. There was little follow up after the announcement...

Sky has unleashed the full official trailer for the limited event series, ‘Mary & George,’ starring Academy Award and BAFTA-winning actor Julianne Moore alongside Nicholas Galitzine.
is inspired by the outrageous true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover.
Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors.
And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.

Adam Sandler heads off into space for Netflix’s cerebral-sounding sci-fi drama, Spaceman. There’s a brand new trailer to watch!
Update 17th January 2024: A new trailer has landed for Spaceman, Chernobyl director Johan Renck’s upcoming sci-fi film. Starring Adam Sandler, it’s coming to Netflix on the 1st March, and following on from the likes of Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love, it looks like a more introspective, thoughtful performance from an actor better known for his broader-than-a-motorway comedies.
Also, Paul Dano provides the voice of a gigantic alien space spider, which turns up in Sandler’s interstellar craft to provide much-needed counselling as he pines after his estranged wife (Carey Mulligan). Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it? The new, full trailer looks fabulous too. And sounds it, thanks to a novel reimagining of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.

HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys is taking a well-earned victory lap.
After a grueling 2023 that was disrupted by months-long strikes by actors and writers, the executive was over the moon to return to celebrating television — including the final season of Succession.
Bloys was especially cheery on Tuesday, the day after HBO collected 31 Emmys across 11 programs, including a drama series win for the final season of Succession.
Bloys shared a chuckle at what has become a tradition of sorts in the press after an Emmy darling like Succession wraps its run as the narrative then becomes a familiar one: “What will HBO do without _____?” Bloys, though, isn’t worried that HBO hits The White Lotus, The Last of Us and Euphoria won’t return until 2025 as he looks at a stacked 2024 that includes Jodie Foster fronting the new season of True Detective and upcoming launches of The Regime with Kate Winslet...

After xix months of solitude on a spaceship, floating alone with no one to talk to, Astronaut Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler) has a bizarre encounter with an extraterrestrial (voiced by Paul Dano) in the trailer for Netflix’s Spaceman. Or is the spider-like creature merely a figment of his imagination?
“I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,” said director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) to Netflix’s Tudum. “I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.”
The cast of the sci-fi drama, based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s Spaceman of Bohemia, includes Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Kunal Nayyar (Suspicion), Lena Olin (Hunters), and Isabella Rossellini (Julia). Colby Day adapted the book, and Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman,...

HBO’s “The Last of Us” has excelled in many departments thus far, but the show’s casting deserves special mention. Bella Ramsey turned out to be the perfect Ellie despite fans wondering if she was the right fit for the role, for starters, and the outside-the-box casting continues for Season 2. Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You) will play Abby in Season 2!
Entertainment Weekly broke the news this afternoon, and they also shared a statement from “The Last of Us” creator Craig Mazin. “Our casting process for Season 2 has been identical to Season 1: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” Mazin tells Entertainment Weekly. “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella, and the rest of our family.”

Get ready for a cosmic journey of heartbreak and hope as the first poster for Spaceman hurtles toward Earth, promising a sci-fi drama unlike any other. The film, directed by the acclaimed Johan Renck, boasts a stellar cast led by the chameleon-like Adam Sandler, the ever-radiant Carey Mulligan, and the enigmatic Paul Dano.
The poster itself is a captivating enigma. Against the backdrop of a swirling nebula, a lone figure, presumably Sandler’s astronaut Jakub Procházka, floats weightlessly in a worn spacesuit. His reflection in his helmet visor reveals a woman, presumed to be Mulligan’s Lenka, his wife back on Earth. The vast distance between them, emphasized by the swirling celestial void, speaks volumes about the emotional chasm Jakub faces on his solitary mission to the edge of the solar system.
But this isn’t just a story of isolation. Dano’s voice echoes in the poster’s tagline: “Lost in the cosmos,...

Exclusive: Creatives behind Estonia – one of Scandinavia’s most expensive drama series of all time – have opened up about the ethical issues surrounding a show spotlighting a tragedy that claimed the lives of 850 people.
Director Måns Månsson, whose past credits include Chernobyl and Snabba Cash, described the cruiseferry’s sinking as a “total national trauma” that needed to be approached with the utmost sensibility, given that authorities are still investigating 30 years on.
“We Scandinavians tend not to be involved with wars so rarely have loss of life on this scale,” he told Deadline, as the show distributed by Beta Film and made by several indies for a number of European networks prepares for launch at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Primetime program.
With budget estimated at around €15M ($16.4M) across eight episodes, Estonia (see an exclusive clip below) charts what happened after midnight on September 28 1994 when a catastrophic storm...

In a sign of Hollywood’s escalating internal tensions, a prominent Directors Guild of America member openly advocated against the election of 10 writer-directors to the guild’s board earlier this month on the grounds that they were “primarily writers” and hailed from “fringe groups.”
In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western Ad/Upm Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning “Coda” writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

If there was any lingering doubt, The Last of Us proved that even the most hard-core genre concept (in this case, a zombie tale adapted from a video game) can become a best-of-class prestige TV drama in the hands of hugely talented creatives — in this case, showrunners Craig Mazin (who made HBO’s gripping Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (who developed PlayStation’s The Last of Us game and its sequel). Their tale of a hardened pandemic survivor (Pedro Pascal) transporting a teenager (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic America full of danger and destruction earned a whopping 24 Emmy nominations (second only to Succession) and was a major streaming hit (averaging more than 30 million viewers per episode).
