When Team Downey co-founder Susan Downey and president of production Amanda Burrell were approached with what would become “The Sympathizer,” it presented them and fellow co-founder and star Robert Downey Jr. with what Susan Downey calls “an excellent creative opportunity and challenge.” It also led to a question: “How are we going to pull this off?”
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Viet Thanh Nguyen and developed for television by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar as well as A24, “The Sympathizer” is the kind of big-swing television show Team Downey has become known for getting behind, following projects like the acclaimed HBO series “Perry Mason” and the ongoing Netflix drama “Sweet Tooth” (which returns for its third and final season on June 6). The popularity of K-dramas continues to run wild in the English-speaking world.
Earlier today Deadline analysis pointed to the continued interest in TV content from the country and now international K-content streamer Kocowa+ has revealed the UK and countries such as Australia are set to rank among its best performing territories after launching across Europe and Oceania in April.
After expanding into nearly 40 territories, Kocowa+ has been focusing on bolstering its localization capabilities, as well as expanding the number of languages for which it can offer subtitles. In an interview with Deadline, Kocowa CEO Park Kun-hee said that English-speaking usage is already booming as the streamer’s top international segment. Spain and Portugal come in next among the best-performing countries for the service, he added.
Developing capabilities for French subtitles is a priority. “French is the highest priority because when I look at the purchasing power in France, it is much higher than other countries,...

On "Star Trek: Enterprise," the character of Ensign Hoshi Sato, played by actress Linda Park, served as the communications officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" takes place a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series, so the franchise's notorious universal translator hadn't yet been refined, leaving human translators like Hoshi to fill in the gaps. Hoshi had a talent for xenolinguistics, but didn't quite have the constitution for long-range space missions or combat situations. She was young and inexperienced, and had to constantly face her anxieties head-on. As the show progressed, Hoshi came into her own, displaying more and more confidence.
The problem with characters that can be defined as "young and inexperienced" is that eventually they will have to become adult and experienced. They will then require other character traits to define them ... and TV writers don't always think that far ahead. Many of the...

In the previous episode of the series Connection, we saw Detective Jang Jae-Kyeong on a mission to take down Jang Chul Gu, the leader of the Five Spider Gang, to end the drug epidemic in the city of Anhyeon. Despite his efforts, the drug trade continued even after Jang Chul Gu was arrested. And the most shocking part was that Jang Jae-Kyeong himself was forcibly drugged by someone known as “The Doctor.” This mysterious figure had been sending threatening messages to the detective, warning him to stop investigating the case and to back off from the drug scene. We also met Oh Yoon-Jin, an investigative journalist and an old school friend of Jang Jae-Kyeong. In this second episode, we are going to explore who wanted to drug the detective. Was it Jang Chul Gu seeking revenge against the detective? Or was it Park Jun-Seo, an old friend of Jang Jae-Kyeong,...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains mild spoilers for “The Sympathizer,” Episode 7, “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?”]
In the end, “The Sympathizer” was not a show that kept things simple. An adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel, the HBO limited series helmed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar concludes in a way that reframes the events of its premiere episodes, and eventually arrives at a thesis that helps ease the protagonist’s internal tug-of-war.
According to star Hoa Xuande, putting an emphasis on the “nothing” in the phrase “Nothing is more important than independence and freedom” makes his character The Captain, a Communist spy embedded in the South Vietnamese army, who begins to lose himself when he’s forced to follow that community in exile in the United States, “realize that he’s been fighting for these things that have been out of his reach, that are just ideals that are unobtainable, and that...

It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking back at director Chan-wook Park’s 2003 South Korean film Oldboy (watch it Here) – a movie that has not only been ranked on lists of the Greatest Films Ever Made, but has also had people looking at hammers differently for over twenty years now. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Written by Park with Jo-yun Hwang and Jun-hyung Lim, Oldboy is a loose adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name. The film has the following synopsis: Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. However, he’s abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company.

Spoiler Alert: The following interview contains spoilers for “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?,” the series finale of “The Sympathizer” on HBO.
Robert Downey Jr. may have played five different characters in “The Sympathizer,” but he’s not the only actor in the cast who assumes multiple identities.
The limited series follows a North Vietnamese communist spy simply known as the Captain (Hoa Xuande) who’s embedded in a South Vietnamese community in Los Angeles after the war. Duy Nguyễn plays Man, the Captain’s handler, best friend and sole remaining connection to his home country. But for fear of surveillance, the two send decoy letters addressed to the Captain’s fictional aunt. Any real truths must be brief, focused and written in invisible ink. Therefore, when the Captain is lonely and in need of connection, he has imaginary conversations with Man as though he were with him in person.

Elizabeth Olsen might not have been the face of Legendary’s Monster-verse, despite her status as an A-list celebrity, but the actress had what some would consider a wasted and small role in the first entry into the franchise, 2014’s Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards.
Elizabeth Olsen in Godzilla | Legendary Pictures
The actress revealed to Den of the Geek that, while the film focused on a 300-meter-tall nuclear lizard, Olsen was moved by the emotional beats of certain scenes in the film, which had also been something that fans had not expected from the movie, given its premise and the subject.
Elizabeth Olsen was “shocked” by a particular scene between Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche
Bryan Cranston in Godzilla | Legendary Pictures
Bryan Cranston‘s work in Edwards’ Godzilla has been critically praised all across the board, with the actor being hailed as the emotional core of the film in a sea of otherwise forgettable characters.

In 2022, like many gamers, Gene Park booted up Cyberpunk 2077, the latest open-world RPG. The futuristic video game by the makers of The Witcher depicts a world full of neon lights and cybernetic enhancements, and it had recently received a big content update. Controller in hand, Park vividly recalls directing a digital Keanu Reeves to try and stop a murder, all while medical tubes protruded from his body. The tubes plugged into a port on his torso, and they were ready to pump chemicals inside. Unlike the digital augments that buffed his video game character,...

Burning Sun Scandal: How Two Female Reporters And Late Idol Goo Hara Exposed K-pop’s Biggest Sex Crimes ( Photo Credit – Twitter )
The K-pop genre has taken the world by storm, mesmerizing millions across the globe with its well-crafted music videos, high-energy performances, and, not to be missed, the irresistible charisma of the idols. However, what we see often differs from what it appears to be. Situations are direr than they seem, things are more dangerous than they look, and people are more horrifying and complex than they pretend to be. Such was the case with the Burning Sun scandal, also known as Burning Sun Gate, the dark truth of which was uncovered in 2019.

The Good Doctor did the best it could with its last-minute series finale.
Surprisingly, it was a bittersweet farewell that reminded viewers of the impression Shaun made on the staff and patients of St. Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital when he arrived during the series premiere.
At the beginning of Tuesday’s final installment, Shaun was reeling from the news that Glassman had just months to live and opted to split his team between finding a cure and simultaneously trying to find a way to save Claire.
Shaun vocalized the importance of saving Glassman, who was resigned to the fact that he had months to live and believed spending it with Shaun, Lea, and Steve was worth it.
Shaun’s best plan would have meant Glassman would have been in and out of surgery, giving him a year at best, which the Chief of Surgery didn’t believe was worthwhile when...

Actor Ray Park debuted as the menacing Sith apprentice Darth Maul in the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. However, Maul meets his untimely demise at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of The Phantom Menace. Given Maul’s interesting look and brief screen time, fans have clamored to see more of the character in the films.
Ray Park originated the role of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.
During an interview, Park admitted to being eager for a return to the galaxy far, far away. The primary reason for Park’s reinvigorated interest in reprising the role of Darth Maul was due to the new lightsaber design of Kylo Ren, which debuted in The Force Awakens. Here is what Park had to say about Kylo Ren’s lightsaber design and his desire to return to Star Wars.

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is the latest auteur making the migration to television. He previously dabbled in serialized narratives by directing all six episodes of the 2018 BBC spy thriller mini-series "The Little Drummer Girl." Adapting a John Le Carré novel, famous for their intricate plots, for his second English-language work? Park's pulled off that and more.
This year, Park co-created "The Sympathizer," a Vietnam War satire starring Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande. Adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen's 2015 novel (and Pulitzer winner), Park also directed the series' first three episodes. Most recently, it's been confirmed that he's producing a TV remake of his most famous film: 2003 revenge thriller "Oldboy."

When co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman learned The Good Doctor would end with its current and seventh season, they “laid down on the floor and contemplated that for its truth, then pretty quickly had an idea of where we wanted to go with that final season,” Friedman reveals, before adding, “but this is definitely bittersweet… I could have continued to tell stories for Shaun [Murphy], and Freddie [Highmore] forever.” In the penultimate episode, there was plenty of sweetness for the show’s doctors: There was a wonderful impromptu 2 a.m. wedding for Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) and Park (Will Yun Lee); the return of original character Claire (Antonia Thomas) and her romantic reunion with Kalu (Chuku Modu); and Shaun, with the help of his wife Lea (Paige Spara) explaining to young addict Hannah how Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) can help her the way he helped Shaun, his “nonbiological son.” Finally, there was Glassman quietly telling Shaun,...

Asher's death was bad enough. We don't need any more tragic endings for our favorite Good Doctor characters.
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9 should have ended happily, with Morgan and Park getting married and Claire learning she was cancer-free.
Instead, Glassman told Shaun that his cancer is back and that he's dying, while Claire collapsed right as she was about to get romantic with Jared. We only have one more episode left to turn all this around!
Penultimate episodes are a good place for tragic events -- if the finale is about moving past them so that the series goes out on a high note.
There's no reason to make the end of a beloved series so depressing that viewers walk away with nothing other than relief that the pain is finally over.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about The Good Doctor Episode 709, “Unconditional.”
It’s the beginning of the end as ABC’s The Good Doctor tonight kicked off its two-part series finale. The first hour had hallmarks of a happy series closer — a wedding and a fan-favorite couple rekindling their romance after years apart — before the episode took a double dark turn at the end.
Things got off to a great start when Claire Browne (returning original cast member Antonia Thomas) reunited with Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) as she came by to get a lump in her breast checked out. It had been ruled benign in Guatemala where she heads surgery but it turned out to be cancerous. Ninja Kamui Anime Review: Did the Series 'Fall Off'? - Main Image
Ninja Kamui’s final episode aired earlier this month. Now, reactions online show that Ninja Kamui’s reception is mixed after its promising start.
When the series began, it got a lot of attention for its bloody action scenes featuring director Sunghoo Park’s signature dynamic martial arts fights.
Sadly, the show wasn’t able to keep its momentum given its shift to CG action. Still, it would be unfair to call it a trainwreck as there are still plenty of redeeming qualities in this Adult Swim anime.
Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for Ninja Kamui, so proceed with caution.
Ninja Kamui Review: A Promising Intro Marred by a Sudden CG Turn
Sunghoo Park is the popular director behind Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and The God of High School. Thus, his move to establish the new studio E&h Production was exciting.

When prosthetic makeup designer Vincent Van Dyke first met with Robert Downey Jr., the two men somewhat immediately hit it off. And good thing, too, since just a couple of days later, Van Dyke heard from the producers of the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer” with the hope of signing him onto the ambitious project.

But in fact, Jeonju was one of the most temperate festivals I’ve ever attended, with official parties ending by 10:30 or 11 and many choosing to go back and sleep after that. They could, if they liked, go to Soseul, unofficially dubbed […]

Exclusive: Chinese streaming giant iQIYI is involved in a legal row after featuring Korean masterpiece Oldboy in its library for at least six years without a proper license.
iQIYI is one of the biggest streaming services in the world, with more than 100M subscribers, but the company has faced a legal claim from Oldboy’s London-based distributor Celsius Entertainment.
Deadline understands that lawyers acting for Celsius and Oldboy producer Egg Films contacted iQIYI last August to allege that the streaming service had breached copyright after its license for the film expired in 2016.
“The pirated broadcast of this film will have a wide range of negative impacts in China, South Korea as well as around the world,” iQIYI was warned in a legal letter seen by Deadline.
“Your company has the social responsibility to protect intellectual property rights and safeguard the corporate image of Chinese enterprises, so please treat this matter with caution.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for the season finale of “The Girls on the Bus.”]
In the Season 1 finale of Max’s “Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) has a tense conversation with Governor Walker (Hettienne Park) that had been building all season. And that’s hardly all.
Walker is a pretty obvious stand-in for Hillary Clinton in the show’s version of a Democratic presidential primary. In Episode 10, written by co-creator Amy Chozick, Walker has just learned that, despite being the most experienced and likely best person for the job, she was going to fall short of getting the necessary delegates to clench the nomination for president. Political journo Sadie comes to speak to Gov. Walker while she’s drowning her sorrows on a campaign bus, and apologizes for how her coverage of her has hurt her over the years — but also lay out her own frustrations about the enigma that is the governor.

Note: This story contains spoilers ahead from “The Sympathizer” Episode 4.
Sunday’s episode of “The Sympathizer” saw The Captain (Hoa Xuande) go to work as an interpreter on auteur Nikos’ (Robert Downey Jr.) film about the Vietnam War.
Co-showrunner Park Chan-wook revealed in an interview with TheWrap that one key change that the series made from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pultizer Prize-winning source material was moving the location of the film’s set from the Philippines to California.
“I think in the original novel, because it’s inspired by ‘Apocalypse Now,’ they changed the Philippines into Vietnam. But because of the financial restraints, we set this in California and changed that into Vietnam for this movie set,” Chan-wook said. “I think in hindsight, it turned out better in terms of our creative aspect… we were able to bring in our secondary characters into our story to have them play the...

Robert Downey Jr.’s brilliant string of roles in A24’s “The Sympathizer” (streaming Sundays on HBO) is a tour de force reminiscent of Peter Sellers’ legendary turns in “Dr. Strangelove.” But Downey does Sellers one better by portraying four characters that serve as interconnected projections of American patriarchy to the Captain (Hoa Xuan Nguyen), a communist spy embedded in the South Vietnam army with a severe identity crisis. It was all part of an ingenious plan by director Park Chan-wook.
After the fall of Saigon, the Captain is forced to flee to the U.S. to continue his post-war mission. He winds up in L.A., where he continues interacting with Claude, a pop music-loving CIA operative, and his college mentor, Hammer, a gay East Asian studies professor who sponsors him. Park Chan-wook doesn’t actually know how Robert Downey Jr. responded to his characters in “The Sympathizer.”
The acclaimed Korean director worked with Downey for the first time while adapting Viet Thanh Nguyen’s bestselling novel for HBO, and he expected a big-name star at that level to drag out the negotiation process after getting an offer. To Park’s surprise, Downey circled back quickly, and the two of them started to dig into his character — his characters.
Downey, who also executive produced the series along with wife Susan, plays four characters (so far) in the limited series, each with a unique look and voice and motivations — all of which were built in process. There’s C.I.A. agent Claude, the Orientalist Professor Hammer, filmmaker Niko, and Congressman Ned Godwin, and Downey appears to thoroughly enjoy embodying every single one. Elizabeth Olsen has played the role of Wanda Maximoff a.k.a Scarlet Witch in the MCU since Avengers: Age of Ultron. From being a brainwashed member of Hydra to being one of the Og Avengers, the character has had an interesting arc in the MCU, which seemingly ended in 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
However, Scarlet Witch had one of her most powerful and tragic moments in Avengers: Infinity War where she had to protect Vision, who possessed the Mind Stone, from the Black Order. While there are some amazing scenes with the actress in the film, fans seem to be annoyed at the MCU for deleting a pivotal sequence from the movie.

Elizabeth Olsen quickly became a fan favorite when she starred as Wanda Maximoff in the MCU.

When “The Sympathizer” showrunner and director Park Chan-Wook brainstormed ideas for HBO’s newest miniseries, one scene struck him as a “quintessential American institution and represented the idea of America.” It took place in a steakhouse with several characters coming together.
Based on the best-selling novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and set at the end of the Vietnam War, “The Sympathizer” follows a captain, played by Hoa Xuande, in the South Vietnamese army who’s secretly spying for the North Vietnamese communists. As Saigon falls and the U.S. retreats, the Captain remains embedded and escapes to Los Angeles. Throughout, Robert Downey Jr. pops up as various characters who interact with the Captain including Claude, the Captain’s CIA contact, as well as a professor, a congressman and an auteur.

Claymation legends Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham will offer stop-motion fans a sneak peek at their upcoming Wallace & Gromit film at this year’s Annecy animation festival.
The still-untitled feature will see inveterate, cheese-loving inventor Wallace designing a “smart gnome” for the family garden who begins to develop a mind of its own. South Korea loves a good gangster story, and they love a good boxing film too. To follow-up the rather lacklustre “The Golden Holiday”, director Kim Bong-han tries to mix both the sub-genres with “The Wild”, his latest release which will be streaming in North America exclusively on WellGo USA's streaming service Hi-Yah!
The Wild is streaming on Hi-Yah!
Woo-cheol used to be a successful boxer who had to spend seven years in prison after his opponent died in an unlicensed, underground boxing match. Upon his release, his friend and gangster Do-sik arranges a welcome gift for him in the form of Myeong-joo, a beautiful young prostitute, who Woo-cheol kindly refuses. While Do-sik wants to integrate his old friend into the business, which involves dealing in drugs with North Korean defectors led by Gak-soo, Woo-cheol wants to leave it all behind and go where no one knows him to live a quiet life.

Park Chan-wook is developing his acclaimed film Oldboy for the first time as an English-language series in partnership with Lionsgate Television. Park, who directed and co-wrote the original film, is set to produce the series alongside producing partner Syd Lim.
The 2003 feature is an adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name written by Garon Tsuchiya. It follows Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a man taken off the streets and imprisoned for 15 years who is one day released and given 5 days to find his captor.
Oldboy is the second title in Park’s Vengeance trilogy, following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and preceding Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005). It earned multiple accolades including the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, a first for a South Korean film. Spike Lee remade the film in 2013 with Josh Brolin portraying the lead character, Joe Doucett.
