It’s been 10 years since David Oyelowo made his U.S. breakthrough portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Playing the awe-inspiring civil rights leader was an opportunity for the British-Nigerian actor to live up to his surname, which translates to “a king deserves respect.”
Oyelowo has been reflecting on that time in his life a lot more lately, thanks in part to “Becoming King,” a documentary directed by his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, that captures the seven-year journey to bring “Selma” to the big screen.
“It was a big year,” he says of 2014. “There was no way you could know the sheer amount of things that would happen, because at the beginning of it, nothing was happening. ‘Selma’ felt dead. I was in the middle of shooting ‘A Most Violent Year,’ having a good time with that, but just feeling in a state of limbo and then—”
He stops mid-thought.

Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

“It’s very, very prideful and it was very special for all of us making it,” reflects Damian Marcano on the experience of directing three episodes of “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” As a child growing up in Trinidad, he and his grandfather would watch “The Lone Ranger” together and, when approached about joining the Paramount+ series, he was “very shocked to find out that he was actually the inspiration for what I had watched portrayed by a white actor,” referring to the influence of the real-life Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) on American pop culture. Reeves was one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals, and the director is glad for the opportunity not only to “retell these stories with the correct lens,” but also to show “a character of this skin color, an African man, formerly enslaved man” who “gets to do the ass-kicking.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is an American Western series that premiered late last year. However, it has already received a very positive critical reception, earning an impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the most watched show worldwide on Paramount+.
The show is clearly destined for a series renewal. However, to the surprise of fans, the show's creators have stated that the second season is likely to be very different from the first.
What is Lawmen: Bass Reeves about?
The Western-themed show follows the story of real-life Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, the first African-American to hold the position in the Upper Midwest Territory. Also based on The Bass Reeves book trilogy by Sidney Thompson, the plot of each episode follows Reeves (played by David Oyelowo) as he goes from being held as a slave to becoming one of the most famous lawmen in history.

Star and executive producer David Oyelowo and Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator, showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan said Reeves’ family values were what made him stand out. Oyelowo plays Reeves, a U.S. Marshal after the abolition of slavery.
“The way in for a global audience should be not just appealing to the sensibility of people who love westerns but the family,” Oyelowo said at Contenders TV. “Essentially a Black family which is also something you never see in this time period. As we discussed this, we felt the universal element was going to be the work-life balance as something that everyone can relate to.”
Oyelowo said that Reeves was always trying to get back to his family after his arrests. Reeves’ family values also influenced one of the show’s most memorable antagonists, Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper). Feehan said Pierce represents the antithesis of Reeves.

These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to either Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) or Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). Paramount+ today announced that Emmy Award and two-time Golden Globe-nominated actor Dennis Quaid will star in the new original drama series Happy Face. Dennis Quaid (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) is slipping into the world of a serial killer who used a smiley face as his calling card for Paramount+’s Happy Face. Emmy nominee Quaid will star as the Happy Face Killer in the streamer’s new drama, inspired by the killer’s daughter Melissa Moore’s autobiography, Shattered Silence, and her Happy Face podcast.
Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

50 Cent got back in touch with his old self not too long ago, and shed a noticeable amount of weight to do so.

The business mogul took pictures at Cuba Gooding Jr.’s birthday party last month, showing off a much sleeker physique reminiscent of his early 2000’s look.

But his old body found common ground with his newer, more contemporary style. Early 2000’s 50 Cent was often seen wearing G-Unit branded apparel with long sleeves and baggy pants.

Nowadays, his outfits are similar to what he wore to Gooding Jr’s party. There, he wore a regular-sized and deceptively modest black t-shirt with matching colored jeans.
He also sported a black fitted New York cap to shout out the city and state that birthed him. The gold chain around his neck was perhaps the highlight of his wardrobe.

A decade after his breakthrough role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, David Oyelowo says he is heartened by the long-overdue shift toward a more culturally diverse marketplace for onscreen storytelling.
As part of NATPE 2024’s official programming, Oyelowo appeared onstage in front of a lively crowd of 150 guests at the InterContinental Miami to discuss his wide-ranging career as an actor, director and producer before receiving The Hollywood Reporter’s “Trailblazer Award” — a commendation given to Hollywood creatives whose work reflects a commitment to amplifying marginalized creators and stories.
“Streaming has really democratized things and the generational impact is seismic,” said Oyelowo, who joins recent THR Trailblazer honorees America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and Niecy Nash-Betts in receiving the award. “I know what marginalization looks like. I know how stories can break down prejudices. I feel it deeply because I’ve experienced it.”

“The need for me to get my job right is incredibly intimidating,” David Oyelowo has said about his recent role in the hit series Lawmen: Bass Reeves. This action-packed limited series from Yellowstone cocreator Taylor Sheridan takes a fascinating look back at real-life American frontiersman Bass Reeves (Oyelowo), the first Black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi. It’s the start of Sheridan’s anthologies devoted to iconic lawmen. As an executive producer and star of the series’ first season,...

David Oyelowo (‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’) on portraying ‘a man who really moved the needle historically’
“I couldn’t believe that a show or a film… in an expansive, big-scale, John Ford-ian way hadn’t existed,” recalls David Oyelowo when he was approached years ago about a project centering on the real-life frontiersman Bass Reeves, who was one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals following the Civil War. The actor — who executive producers and stars in the title role of the Paramount+ limited series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” — thought it was a “head scratcher” that nobody had adapted his story to the screen with the character in the leading role. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
This is not the first time Oyelowo has portrayed a historical figure on screen, of course, as he previously starred as Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.” The actor shares that he finds “real joy” in “playing characters that really moved the needle historically, but...

Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.

Exploring the Formative Years of Bass Reeves Born into the harsh realities of slavery in July 1838, Bass Reeves’ early life was one of servitude under William S. Reeves, an Arkansas state legislator. His formative years were spent in Grayson County, TX, after his family was moved there when he was just eight years old. These early experiences likely instilled in him a resilience and resourcefulness that would later define his legendary career. Instead, Bass Reeves kicks off with the lead character in servitude during the Civil War — he’s enslaved by an officer in the Confederate Army. The crucible...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” all eight episodes of which are now streaming on Paramount+.
When David Oyelowo first learned about the legend of Bass Reeves — who escaped enslavement to become one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi — nearly a decade ago, the actor-producer set out on a mission to bring the story to the masses.
Oyelowo’s goal was the same as the one he’d set when playing Martin Luther King Jr. in 2014’s “Selma”: Who is the man behind the myth?
Over the course of eight episodes, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” aims to answer that question, filling in the gaps in the historical record about Reeves’ life and career.

[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Lawmen: Bass Reeves.]
In the season finale of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the audience witnessed a standoff between former Confederate soldier Esau Pierce (played by Barry Pepper) and the hero lawman Bass Reeves (Golden Globe-nominated David Oyelowo). While Esau seemed to see something admirable in Bass from their day-one encounter (when Reeves was still under the confines of slavery), an unfortunate turn of events toward the end of episode one would forever make Esau a mortal enemy in Bass’ eyes.
And it could not be any other way, says Chad Feehan, showrunner of the Paramount+ series. Having contributed to successful cable network shows such as Ray Donovan (Showtime) and Banshee (Cinemax), Feehan tells The Hollywood Reporter that his friend, executive producer Taylor Sheridan, introducing him to Oyelowo provided the right foundation for the trio to work together in producing what Feehan calls a long-overdue, extensive exploration of the law legend’s...

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” just wrapped on Paramount+. And while the streamer has yet to announce whether it will be coming back for another season, the show’s creator Chad Feehan is absolutely ready to come back.
“I intentionally left some meat on the bone in case we got to this point. Bass’s life is so incredible and it’s so expansive, there is no way that we could hit every major benchmark in his life in 8 or 10 hours or else it would’ve felt almost like a procedural,” Feehan told TheWrap.
And noting the story of the real-life Reeves being forced to arrest his own son in part to save his life, Feehan adds, “I would love to tell that story.”
“Lawman: Bass Reeves” is based on the life of Bass Reeves (played on the show by David Oyelowo), a former slave who became the first Black deputy U.

The eighth episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves showed us the final confrontation between Esau Pierce and Bass Reeves, and I will add that it was a hell of a showdown. The series tried to capture what Bass had gone through over the years and how he had been impacted by his circumstances, which changed him drastically. Jennie could no longer recognize what Bass had become, and Bass needed to deal with Esau to be able to understand that himself. Before Bass had become a Deputy U.S. Marshall or a free man for that matter, he was a slave, but destiny had something else planned for him. He went through some harrowing situations but ultimately became a free man and started his family. Now that the miniseries has come to an end, it’s clear that dealing with Esau Pierce was the most challenging task of Bass’ life, which is...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves has brought the true story of Bass Reeves’ legendary career as a U.S. Deputy Marshal to life. But at the core of the story has been the love between Bass and his wife, Jennie Reeves. David Oyelowo and City on a Hill alum Lauren E. Banks were tasked with telling this true love story, and Oyelowo (who executive produced the season in addition to starring) tells TV Insider they “searched far and wide” for the perfect actor to play Jennie. They found what they needed in Banks, whose audition Oyelowo says was one of the best he’s ever seen. “I’ve produced a few shows now. I don’t think I’ve ever had an audition tape have quite that effect on the brain trust as hers did,” he tells TV Insider in the video above. “It was just such a no-brainer, and that continued...

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves season one comes to an end with episode eight, an episode that opens with Bass (David Oyelowo), Billy (Forrest Goodluck), and Sherrill Lynn (Dennis Quaid) kidnapping an associate of Esau Pierce (aka Mr. Sundown) in Fort Worth, Texas. They take him to a deserted house outside of town, but even after being tortured by Sherrill, the associate refuses to give up Esau’s location.
Bass takes over the questioning and exits the house minutes later, declaring they’re heading to Glen Rose. Sherrill doesn’t believe taking the man’s boots is harsh enough punishment. Bass, however, thinks walking for miles will probably lead to his death.
Sherrill goes against Bass’s orders and kills the man.

British actor David Oyelowo is drawn to portraying impactful characters, especially Black historical figures throughout the diaspora. He first gained recognition for playing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 2014 film Selma. He then played King Seretse Khama of Botswana in 2016’s A United Kingdom, and now he takes on title role of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the legendary figure believed to be the inspiration for the Lone Ranger.
It earned him a Golden Globe nomination today for Best Actor in a Limited Series Made for Television in the Paramount+ drama.
As one of the first Black U.S. deputy marshals west of the Mississippi, Reeves is said to have captured over 3,000 outlaws with expert marksmanship and detective skills. The seventh episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves finally reached the cusp of where it was always intended to reach. This was never a simple tale that was going to show us the conquests of the legendary figure of Bass Reeves, the first colored Deputy U.S. Marshall, but a story of how the resolve of upholding your duties inevitably collides with the responsibility to question the status quo as a citizen. Bass had done his duty diligently over the years, catching criminals in Indian Territory, Arkansas. But was the ‘law’ that he was working forever cognizant of why there were people like Esau Pierce who were pure evil as far as Bass was concerned? In a country at the time when slavery had just been declared illegal, Bass really had to think about what it would take to make some people understand that it shouldn’t matter if it’s illegal; it’s inhuman,...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the latest series in Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s stable, tells an untold story that has been years in the making.
The Paramount+ anthology series, developed for TV by showrunner Chad Feehan, deep dives into the life story of legendary lawman Bass Reeves, played by David Oyelowo in the series, to chart his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi.
Oyelowo recently told The Hollywood Reporter that when he first pitched the series in 2015, “the whole town turned it down saying, ‘We’re not doing that because no one is doing Westerns.'” When he again went out with the project in 2017, he was told, “Oh, we’re not doing that because everyone is doing Westerns.” Oyelowo said he had a similar journey when getting Selma made, and that it wasn’t until the...

When Lawmen: Bass Reeves viewers first meet David Oyelowo’s character, creator Taylor Sheridan’s version of legendary Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves is not the man that many history buffs speak of. He is not the mystical lawman figure who many say influenced the creation of the Lone Ranger character in Hollywood.
This Bass Reeves (portrayed by Oyelowo) is a fearful but devoted enslaved soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He is forced into service by Arkansas slave plantation owner and Confederate Army Major George Reeves (played by Shea Whigham). White Confederate soldiers and Black slaves forced to participate in the war instantly take notice that Bass is treated differently by Major Reeves: He’s a slave who is allowed to ride on top of a horse next to his owner, as the officer knows Bass has a gift of being an accurate shot with a rifle and gun.

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode five opens with the disturbing sight of a dead man hanging from a tree. Attached to his chest is a note that reads, “Bass Reeves will swing here.”
Bass (David Oyelowo) stakes out an area, sending Billy (Forrest Goodluck) into Bywater’s General Store while watching what goes down from afar. Billy returns to report that five armed men are hanging out inside, including the outlaw, Jim Webb. Bass and Billy move in closer, and Bass immediately comes under fire as he approaches the building.

Bass Reeves gets a lot of well-deserved fame for being a legendary gunslinger. But his wife, Nellie Jennie Reeves, was a badass in her own right. (Though the church-going Mrs. Reeves likely wouldn’t love us referring to her that way.)
So TVLine jumped at the chance to speak with Lawmen: Bass Reeves‘ Lauren E. Banks, who plays Jennie opposite David Oyelowo’s Bass in the Paramount+ drama. Read on to hear the City on a Hill alum tease what might happen when trouble comes Jennie’s way later this season — and stick around to find out how prep for...

The show may be called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, but Bass's success as a lawman relies on his love of family, including his wife, Jennie.
Lauren E. Banks plays Jennie with so much heart. Through her performance, you feel Bass leaning on her love and strength, secure in the notion that he's leaving those most important to him in very capable hands.
Their faith in each other gives them wings, allowing them to rise above their heartbreaking past as a couple, as parents, and as landowners in the early 20th Century.
We spoke with Banks about the challenges playing Jennie brings to her and why their marriage and family stand out against a crowd of other families on TV.
On Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 4, the reality of their splintered physical connection hit Bass as he delivered a message from a dying outlaw to his wife. In our review, we discussed...
