“Fallout 76” has found a whole new world of players thanks to the popularity of Amazon’s “Fallout” TV series. The Bethesda Game Studios title, which first launched in October 2018, crossed 20 million downloads and plays as of Wednesday.
That is a jump from the 17 million players “Fallout 76” had totaled in December, ahead of the April 10 release of Jonathan Nolan’s “Fallout” TV adaptation on Prime Video.
“It’s kind of been sneaky popular for a while — but not to this level and it’s just been really great for the for the whole studio,” Bethesda director and executive producer Todd Howard, who oversees the “Fallout” franchise, told Variety.
In the under two months since the series premiered (and has already been picked up for a second season), daily active users across the “Fallout” video game franchise titles developed and published by Bethesda, a division of Microsoft Gaming, have ballooned over 600% to more than 5 million players.

Fallout has become one of Prime Video’s biggest series ever — according to Prime Video.
The well-reviewed show, based on the video game franchise of the same name, has become the second-most-watched title ever on the Amazon streaming service over its first 16 days of release, the company says. Prime Video says 65 million viewers worldwide have watched at least some of Fallout since its April 10 premiere, putting the show behind only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in the streamer’s catalog.
Global audiences have powered a majority of that viewing: More than 60 percent of Fallout’s audience is outside the United States. The (limited) data from Amazon jibes with that from outside sources like Samba TV, Luminate and Reelgood, all of which have tracked a strong start for the series (Nielsen’s streaming data lags by several weeks).

“Fallout” is proving to be far from a (nuclear) bomb for Amazon’s Prime Video.
According to the streamer, the series pulled in 65 million viewers in its first 16 days of availability, with the first season dropping in its entirety on April 10. That makes it the second most-watched title ever on the platform and the most-watched title since the debut on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” back in 2022.
Amazon also says the show is its most-watched ever among adults 18-34, with 60% of the show’s audience coming from outside the United States. In particular, the UK, France, and Brazil have all proven to be hubs for the show’s popularity. It should be noted, however, that Amazon has not released any data on how viewers are counted, especially when it comes to completion of the show. Therefore, it is unknown if a viewer is counted once they have completed a single episode,...

Set in an alternate version of Earth, the series takes place in the same desolate world as the original games. Those who could afford it hid in their Vault-Tec vaults. As for the rest of humanity, they were forced to confront the horrors of this new world head on. Now over 200 years after that war, one young Vault Dweller will risk it all and travel to the surface.

Aaron Moten was not exactly familiar with “Fallout,” the game, when “Fallout,” the TV show, came to him. “I think if I had seen a poster, if I had seen a photograph of the T-60 — the big power armor suit — I would’ve recognized it to be ‘Fallout,’ but yeah, totally new to me,” he tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “The world, the deep dive, if you will.”
The actor did a deep dive into gamers and Twitch streamers to prep for his audition, but after landing the part of Maximus, he made a conscious choice not to play the game. “My job as an actor always feels like bringing a human element to something. TV or film adaptations of video games are full of Easter eggs to keep the fans hooked and the new Fallout show is no exception. There have already been a number of them highlighted and there might be another one that fans may have missed while watching the show. While Walton Goggins nailed the role of The Ghoul, the show also sees another character eventually join the radiation club.
Fallout has been received well by fans and critics alike but the story might not be over yet. Although, season 2 of the show hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, it is very likely that we’ll see it at some point given the ending of the first series. A ravaged post-apocalyptic wasteland, like the one in the "Fallout" video game franchise, is like a minefield waiting to explode. Treacherous terrains, radioactive water bodies, aggressive wastelanders, and mutated insects are just some of the dangers that await any explorer, and "Fallout" relies on one in-game mechanic to immerse players into its dynamic open worlds. A Pip-Boy, short for Personal Information Processor, acts as a diegetic tool in every "Fallout" title, where everything from inventory management to a specialized targeting combat system (known as V.A.T.S) is embedded within this portable wrist computer. Although Pip-Boys were originally issued to vault dwellers, their usage spread to the surface, where several Free State inhabitants relied on them for survival and navigation. When The Last of Us debuted early in 2023, I began my rave review by saying, “Among the many compliments I can give HBO’s The Last of Us is that it eventually made me forget that it’s based on a video game.” Some gamers took this as both a backhanded compliment for the show and a blanket dismissal of the artistry of video games. But the point I argued then, and would argue now, is that the demands of an interactive game are fundamentally different from the demands of...

The Prime Video TV series adaptation of the popular Fallout video game franchise won’t begin streaming until April 12th, but season 2 of the show is already moving forward. While the first season was primarily filmed in New York (with some filming also taking place in Utah), Variety reports that the production will be moving to California for the next sequel. That’s not to take advantage of filming locations there, but rather to get a tax break. The California Film Commission just awarded $152 million in tax incentives to a dozen different TV shows, and Fallout is on the list. For filming the next season in California, the show will receive $25 million in California tax credits.
The budget for the show is quite large, as Variety notes that it has $153 million in qualified expenditures for the season.

Walton Goggins is quick to assure us that, yes, he was in possession of his proboscis while filming scenes as Fallout‘s nose-less Ghoul.
Based on the video game series and binge-dropping Thursday, April 11, Fallout is set 200 years after the apocalypse, where Lucy (Yellowjackets‘ Ella Purnell) — a denizen of a luxury fallout shelter (“vault”) — finds her peaceful nature tested as she is forced to the surface to rescue her father (Twin Peaks‘ Kyle MacLachlan). Walton Goggins has been a part of some interesting films and TV projects over the years. While he might not be an A-list superstar, his range and versatility as an actor cannot be underestimated. His Emmy-nominated performance as Boyd Crowder in Justified was one of many roles where he shined as an actor.
Ella Purnell as Lucy in Amazon’s Fallout
In films, he famously starred in Tarantino’s dual Western films Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. He is gearing up for his next big role as the Ghoul in the upcoming Fallout series for Amazon. It seems Goggins was blown away by last year’s The Last of Us series and talked to Pedro Pascal about his experience on making the show.

As games will know, Fallout is one of the most popular and best-known video game franchises, whose first installment was released back in 1997 for the computer, but it wasn’t until Fallout 3 was released on platforms that the series exploded. This post-apocalyptic role-playing game turned out to be an ideal material for a series adaptation, which is why Amazon Prime picked up the series.
The series itself was o-created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner and will be developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, who have previously worked on HBO’s hit series Westworld, which also has a similar setting. The series is set to be released on April 11, 2024 on Amazon Prime, and ahead of its release, the streaming service has released the first official clip from the series, showing off some interesting scenes, characters and interactions. Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) stars as Lucy, an idealistic vault dweller whose ideals are tested when people harm her loved ones. Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul, a bounty hunter on the surface who’s hiding his past.
