Noted respecter of the rule of law, Jason Aldean, expressed his displeasure with the rule of law after Donald Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Doing his best impression of the flagpole outside Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s home, Aldean posted an upside down American flag on Instagram after the verdict came in yesterday, May 30. Talk about bad timing. Of the five nightly late-night shows, all but one are on vacation this week. Which means Jimmy Kimmel has the Trump verdict all to himself tonight.
So what’s a vacationing Late Nighter to do when the story you’ve been tracking in your nightly monologues for years now reaches its climax and your show is in repeats?
You take to social media, apparently.
Shortly after a jury found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his historic New York hush money trial, The Daily Show posted this message to X/Twitter “Justice Alito has called for upside down American flags to be flown at half mast.”
An hour later, the same account posted this:

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has finally responded to concerns about his ability to remain impartial in cases related to efforts to subvert the 2020 election. His answer is a firm refusal to recuse himself.
Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that Alito has flown at least two flags associated with the 2020 “Stop the Steal” movement, which falsely holds that widespread election fraud had robbed former President Donald Trump of a second term.

After reports that an upside-down American flag had flown outside the Virginia residence of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito during the period surrounding Jan. 6, 2021, the conservative justice blamed the flag’s placement on his wife, Martha-Ann — claiming her actions were a result of a clash over a neighbor’s anti-Trump yard sign and a verbal insult.
Now, the Alitos’ neighbors — Emily Baden and her then-boyfriend, now husband — are disputing the Alitos’ version of events, according to the The New York Times, which reviewed text messages and a police call to corroborate the claims.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor revealed that she has cried in her office after losses on major cases due to the panel’s conservative supermajority.
On Friday, Sotomayor spoke to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University while receiving the Radcliffe Medal.
“There are days that I’ve come to my office after an announcement of a case and closed my door and cried,” Sotomayor admitted to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. “There have been those days. And there are likely to be more.’
While she did not reveal which events or cases drove her to tears, she pushed the need to keep fighting for particular causes. She was likely referring to the court’s overturning of Roe V. Wade, which guaranteed women’s right to an abortion nationwide.
“There are moments when I’m deeply, deeply sad,” she said. “And there are moments when, yes, even I feel desperation.

A right-wing flag flew outside Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s beach vacation home in Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
The “Appeal to Heaven” flag had been seen flying at Alito’s beach home on Google Images searches in July and September 2023. Still, it was unclear how long the flag was flying or how much time the Supreme Court Justice had spent there.
The “Appeal to Heaven” flag, otherwise known as the “Pine Tree” flag, features an old evergreen tree drawn on a white background with “An Appeal to Heaven” written in black block letters.
Col. Joseph Reed, a right-hand man to then-General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, originally designed the flag.
“Please fix upon some particular color for a flag and a signal by which our vessels may know one another,” Reed mentioned in a letter from Cambridge, Mass. to Colonels John Glover and Stephen Moylan, dated October 20, 1775, according to researchers.

A jaded nation rediscovered its capacity for shock last week when a photo surfaced of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito flying an upside-down American flag in the days after the January 6 insurrection. That a Scotus judge would strip away all veneer of impartiality concerning an armed attack on the very foundations of American democracy by publicly signaling his support for those storming the Capitol Building to prop up defeated Republican ringleader Donald Trump was enough to make even centrists catch their breath. At least before immediately accepting Alito’s nonsense excuse that his wife did it because the neighbors were mean. But at least that was just a one-time treasonous thing from a guy who joined his right-wing Scotus colleagues in slow-walking a decision...

Financial disclosure filings have revealed that conservative Justice Samuel Alito sold shares of the beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev at the same time that the company faced a backlash from conservatives over its partnership with a transgender social media influencer.
Alito’s stock transactions have sparked fresh accusations that the justice is engaged in or aligned with partisan politics despite a recently adopted code of conduct that directs the justices to “refrain from political activity.”
According to a financial disclosure filing, Alito sold between $1,000 and $15,000 of A.B. InBev’s stock on Aug. 14, 2023. This coincided with a months-long campaign to boycott Bud Light (a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch) after the company partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in a social media campaign. This partnership thrust the world’s largest beermaker into the center of a broader fight over transgender rights and acceptance in the United States. It drew criticism from both conservatives and supporters of Mulvaney.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito flew an “Appeal to Heaven” flag at his New Jersey beach house. The flag’s close association with both far-right Christian nationalists and the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 raises serious questions about Alito’s ability to rule impartially. The conservative court on which Alito sits is largely the product of right-wing dark-money overlord Leonard Leo, and — wouldn’t you know it — Leo flew the same “Appeal to Heaven” flag outside of his house in Maine.

Prince Harry cannot expand his privacy lawsuit against the publisher of U.K. tabloid The Sun to include allegations against media mogul Rupert Murdoch and presenter Piers Morgan, a London judge has ruled.
The Duke of Sussex’s lawyers were hoping to sue over claims that Murdoch and other top executives were part of an effort to conceal and destroy evidence of unlawful information gathering. The prince alleges that he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for News Group Newspapers (Ngn) titles The Sun and the now-defunct News Of The World, which closed in 2011.

Prince Harry will not be able to expand his phone hacking lawsuit against News Group Newspapers to include Rupert Murdoch and Piers Morgan, the UK’s High Court has ruled.
Mr Justice Fancourt ruled on Tuesday that individual allegations against Murdoch and Morgan were not “material” to the case, which is on course to go to trial in January 2025.
Prince Harry and 40 others are suing News Group Newspapers, which publishes The Sun newspaper and shuttered News of the World, over allegations of phone hacking and unlawful information gathering. The publisher denies the allegations.
Fancourt said he was blocking the plaintiffs’ desire to include “trophy targets” in the legal proceedings, adding that this cannot be an “an end in itself.”
Murdoch owns News Group Newspapers, while Morgan — who has a bitter and ongoing feud with Prince Harry — was the editor of the News of the World for around two years from 1994.

Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow” is a singular work of cinema, a film that earned rave reviews for committing to its distinct aesthetic and exploration of the ways that our attachments to pop culture that feel disposable to others can be linked to trans identity. But despite many hailing it as a perfect standalone movie, the filmmaker believes there might be even more stories to tell in the world of Owen and “The Pink Opaque.”
In a new interview with USA Today, Schoenbrun refused to rule out the possibility of making a sequel to “I Saw the TV Glow,” explaining that they’d be open to approaching the story again from a different perspective.
“I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while. I always ask myself, ‘Where do the characters go? Is there anywhere else after this?'” Schoenbrun said. “Sometimes there’s not an answer that deserves further exploration,...

Following the Capitol riots in 2021, an upside-down U.S. flag flew outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
The New York Times published a photo of the inverted flag, reporting that it was seen at the Alitos’ home in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 17, 2021, for several days, distressing neighbors.
“I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,” Alito said in an emailed statement. “It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”
His wife, Martha-Ann Alito, fought with another family in the neighborhood about an anti-Trump sign placed on their lawn.
The neighbors perceived the flag as a political statement. In the weeks after the 2020 election, the upside-down flag had become a symbol of the “Stop the Steal” movement, in which Donald Trump’s supporters falsely claimed that Joe Biden’s victory...

Victoria Justice, who headlined Nickelodeon’s popular series “Victorious” for four seasons and 57 episodes between 2010 and 2013, said in a new interview with Marie Claire that she feels like series creator Dan Schneider owes her an apology as she was “treated unfairly” at times on the show. Schneider also created the series “Zoey 101,” which Justice appeared on prior to “Victorious.”
Schnieder has come under fire this year in the wake of the Investigation Discovery series “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which included many misconduct allegations against him from his tenure at Nickelodeon. Clips from “Victorious” were heavily featured in the documentary as Schnieder was accused of making his young actors do inappropriate things on camera. Justice starred in the show alongside Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies and more.
“Something that was very evident in the documentary is that Dan had a very large ego,” Justice told Marie Claire.

Victoria Justice shared her reaction to the Quiet on Set docuseries this week, saying the program shed light on former Nickelodeon exec Dan Schneider’s “very large ego.”
Justice starred in Nickelodeon shows Zoey 101 and Victorious from 2005 to 2013. Both series were produced by Schneider, who was accused of workplace misconduct and sexual harassment by many of Justice’s peers in Quiet on Set. Schneider released an apology following the documentary’s release and later sued the show’s producers for defamation.
Speaking to Marie Claire this week, the actress and singer said her experience with the children’s network was mostly positive but that the docuseries did accurately portray Schneider’s “very large ego,” which sometimes “clouded his better judgment and affected the way he treated people.”

In a new interview, Justice recalls her “complex” relationship with Schneider and feels she’s owed an apology.
“Something that was very evident in the documentary is that Dan had a very large ego,” Justice told Marie Claire. “And sometimes that ego clouded his better judgment and affected the way he treated people, and there were times I felt like I was being treated unfairly.”
Justice says that nothing sexual ever happened with Schneider she does recall some moments that “were in poor taste.” After watching the docuseries, Schneider said he owed people an apology, and to that, Justice said, “I would say I’m definitely one of the people on that list.”

Former President Donald Trump‘s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited former Trump adviser Peter Navarro in federal prison. Navarro faces a sentence of four months after he was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress related to the January 6 investigations.
Navarro failed to provide the necessary information, including documents and testimony, to the former January 6 House committee by evading a congressional subpoena. Navarro claimed that former President Trump had asserted executive privilege to maintain confidentiality. However, no evidence of Trump invoking the privilege was ever presented.
Navarro attempted to appeal his prison sentence twice to the U.S. Supreme Court, once to Chief Justice John Roberts and again to Justice Neil Gorsuch. Both Justices denied his requests. Later, District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Navarro to six months in prison and a fine of $600,000.
Trump Jr. claimed he visited Navarro to show support for “a good man” who was “wrongfully convicted.

Fans of the classic Nickelodeon show Victorious were in for a treat recently. While the show ended eleven years ago, it continues to enjoy a loyal fan following online. Social Media, especially TikTok and YouTube, are rife with fan tributes and edits featuring the main cast of the series.
The members of the show also got in on the action recently when Victoria Justice and Daniella Monet were seen having a mini-reunion on TikTok that left netizens in a tizzy. While most fans were happy to see the former co-stars together again, there was also a sense of sadness. The reunion was a reminder of the fact that Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato do not have a similar relationship despite also being former co-stars.

At an Alabama judicial conference on Friday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas responded to the criticism against him and his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas.
Thomas and Ginni have faced public criticism for Thomas’ failure to disclose the extensive lavish gifts he’s accepted from his wealthy conservative friends. Text messages and emails revealed Ginni’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election by appealing to officials and lawmakers. Thomas was found to be involved in several cases related to the 2020 election, including the January 6 Capitol riot.
“My wife and I, the last two or three years, it’s been—just the nastiness and the lies—it’s just incredible,” Thomas said at the conference.
The Supreme Court Justice expressed his disappointment in the current state of the federal courts. He claimed people were seeking sympathetic judges and that the Supreme Court was less stable than it had been in the past.

Justice Clarence Thomas took the opportunity during a judicial conference in Alabama on Friday to criticize the “nastiness” and “lies” he’s faced following bombshell reports that conservative megadonor Harlan Crow had funded the justice’s lavish lifestyle for decades.
According to Politico, while addressing a room of judges, attorneys and other court personnel in the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference at the conference, Thomas repeatedly denounced his critics and called Washington a “hideous place.”
When asked about working in a world that appeared mean-spirted, the justice replied, “I think there’s challenges to that.

In the season 11 premiere of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver made a playful offer to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas when he proposed that if Thomas resigned from the court, he would receive a new motorhome and an annual payment of $1 million from Oliver himself until one of them passed away.
Oliver said on his show, “A million dollars a year and a brand-new condo on wheels, and all you have to do in return is sign the contract and get the f— off the Supreme Court.” Oliver told the justice to respond to his offer in 30 days.
Thomas did not accept the offer within the allotted 30-day period, which led to mixed emotions for Oliver.
Oliver revealed that the contract was real. He and his team spoke to experts about the possibility, and everyone agreed, “This is somehow legal.” He added that HBO itself would not front the money on the deal.

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver almost indentured himself to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
A few months ago, he made Thomas an offer: if he would resign, Oliver would give him $1 million a year until one of them died, plus a new motor home. He gave Thomas 30 days to accept.
Thomas, as we all know, is still on the Supreme Court, and Oliver admitted his relief during an appearance Monday on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
“It was both a huge relief and massively disappointing that he didn’t take it,” he told Meyers. And even though Oliver’s wife was not thrilled when he made the initial offer, he said he’d be willing to make the offer again.
“As long as he gets out before they’re doing the June decisions, I would be willing to open discussions again,” Oliver said. “If you want to get in...

Adult film actress Stormy Daniels testified on Tuesday in a Manhattan court and recounted salacious details of her alleged affair with Donald Trump.
Daniels, who spoke rapidly with animated gestures, described an encounter in which she spanked Trump with a rolled-up magazine with his face on the cover. The vivid description of the occasion in her testimony led to visible smirks from some jurors. It elicited a reported profanity from Trump, who mouthed his disapproval, ‘That’s bull—-,’ to his legal team.
Throughout Daniels’ testimony, Trump was visibly frustrated and shook his head in disagreement. Daniels claimed that Trump had reassured her not to worry about his wife, Melania, as they didn’t “even sleep in the same room.” This statement seemed to agitate the former president further, who exhibited signs of anger and was later cautioned by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan for his audible curse and head shakes,...

“We believe in this case, and we will be retrying this case,” prosecutors in Harvey Weinstein’s New York rape case told a judge today in the first hearing since the much-accused producer’s 2020 conviction was overturned last week. “It was a strong case in 2020 …and it remains a strong case in 2024,” added Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg.
Weinstein was sitting in the courtroom as the officials from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced their intention to take the case back to a jury. The trial could begin as quickly as September, if room can be found on the court calendar.
“We are happy to hear that the prosecutors want a speedy trial,” Weinstein chief attorney Arthur Aidala told the court as he once again proclaimed his client’s innocence. “It’s a new trial, it’s a new day … his life is on the line.”

Exclusive: Despite a myriad of health issues landing the incarcerated Harvey Weinstein in hospital last week, the much-accused producer is still expected to show up in court tomorrow — at least right now.
“Mr. Weinstein entered prison with serious medical issues, and they have not magically disappeared, but are being managed,” the producer’s long-time spokesperson Juda Engelmayer tells Deadline of his client who is suffering from diabetes, cardiac issued, sleep apnea, and who is also near blind.
Following the April 25 overturning of his 2020 sex crimes conviction, the past few days have seen a storm of rumors that 72-year-old Weinstein wouldn’t make the re-arraignment hearing in the early afternoon local time at 100 Centre Street in Manhattan. While Weinstein’s current condition is far from critical at present and he is under observation at Bellevue, one well-positioned law enforcement source said that “things could turn on a dime” and not to rule out “more drama.
