When people decide to get into theatre, the audience is typically a major reason why they do it. For as personally gratifying it is to deliver a well-crafted monologue, belt out a brash 11 o'clock number, or nail a complicated tap dance routine, the reason all that work is worthwhile is getting an audience to applaud, to laugh, to cry, to gasp, or whatever you are performing is hoping to elicit from the people in the house. This is particularly true in musical theatre, where shows are literally designed to have designated moments for the audience to shower the performers in applause.
Anna Kendrick was a bona fide theatre kid, appearing on Broadway at the early age of 12 in a stage adaptation of the 1956 movie musical "High Society" (which in turn was a musical adaptation of the 1939 play "The Philadelphia Story"). Anna Kendrick is just delightful. From her recent appearance on "Hot Ones" to showing up in things like Stephen Colbert's "The Lord of the Rings" rap for the trilogy's 20th anniversary (where she is given a hard time for being in the "Twilight" movies) she is always a whole lot of fun to watch. Kendrick is promoting her new film, "Alice, Darling," where she plays a woman dealing with an emotionally abusive relationship. She recently sat down with Vanity Fair to watch clips of her old films like "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "Pitch Perfect," "Camp," and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," where she voiced her thoughts on her graduation speech in the latter.
Kendrick played the relatively small role of Jessica, one of Bella Swan's (Kristen Stewart) human friends in the town of Forks, Washington. If you recall the film, it's the end of high school for Bella,...

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

Alan Copeland, the songwriter, Grammy-winning arranger and ultra-smooth vocalist known for his many years with The Modernaires and performances on Your Hit Parade and The Red Skelton Hour, has died. He was 96.
Copeland died Dec. 28 in an assisted living facility in Sonora, California, his friend Bob Lehmann told The Hollywood Reporter.
As recently as this fall, Copeland was still singing and playing keyboards in a quartet called Now You Hazz Jazz. “It was his dream to play in a small group until the last curtain, that’s how he termed it,” said Lehmann, the drummer.
Copeland wrote or co-wrote songs including “Make Love to Me” — Jo Stafford’s version made it to No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1954 — “Too Young to Know,” “High Society,” “This Must Be the Place, “Darling, Darling, Darling” and “While the Vesper Bells Were Ringing.”

If they’re good, music documentaries can serve as a time machine — an immersive experience that transports the viewer back to the magic of another era, where the soundtrack envelops you, and an artist who has left this mortal coil returns for 90 minutes or so to validate their superstar status — a mic drop straight from the heavens. If the films are very good, they leave even hardcore fans learning a thing or two about their beloved icons. And if the films are very, very good, they completely upend public perception and, by extension, rewrite an artist’s legacy in a meaningful way.
Over the weekend, Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues was named Best Music Documentary at the IDA Documentary Awards, and it’s also a contender in the race for Oscar gold, but the impact of the Apple TV+ film may very well stretch beyond awards season. Never-before-heard audio tapes...

Anna Kendrick was continuing to revel in her moment as she shared another stunning snapshot from her time at the Toronto Independent Film Festival (TIFF).
The 37-year-old actress and singer, who first displayed her impressive pipes in the Broadway production of High Society at the tender age of just 12, dazzled on the red carpet recently for her appearance at the star-studded event.
The festival kicked off with an emotional standing ovation for actor Brendan Fraser, who served up a major comeback with his turn as overweight, wheelchair-bound gay man Charlie in the movie The Whale.
Now, as the celebrations and ceremonies continue, other stars are ensuring to take their own time to shine, and Anna did just that with her attire choice for the outing.

“I really like quirky little things that have never been done before,” explains “Hangmen” star Tracie Bennett. The Tony-nominated actress has enjoyed a varied career on stage, which has seen her oscillate between musicals and dramas, “swirling these little plates of variety,” as she puts it. She recently opened Martin McDonagh’s new dark comedy on Broadway, which puts all of her skills to use as the owner of a small town pub. The combination of the playwright’s dark humor with the technical requirements of the production, makes for a one-of-a-kind challenge for the actress. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“I’ve never done anything more technical than this,” reveals Bennett. It’s quite the extraordinary claim for a performer who began her career as a stuntwoman. She may not be performing stunts in this play, but every bit of action is...

Elegant movie star Grace Kelly was not just a stunning beauty but a gifted performer, so some might be surprised to learn that her film career lasted just five years. During those years, the regal blonde won an Oscar and worked with Alfred Hitchcock three times, in “Dial M for Murder,” “To Catch a Thief” and “Rear Window” — perhaps her signature role.
Hollywood’s big question when she married Prince Albert Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was whether she would continue to act. Fans and the media all wanted to know what would happen, but it seemed unlikely — after all, Rita Hayworth had found being a princess incompatible with being a movie star and her marriage to Prince Aly Khan lasted just a few years.

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

A decade ago, for eight brief weeks, Tinsley was the star of a reality show all her own when High Society premiered on The CW in the spring of 2010. When they first met, Grace Kelly was an Oscar-winning actress and Prince Rainier was . . . a prince. And though their relationship may have been more high-profile than most, their courtship had some surprisingly “normal” elements.
These everyday moments — as well as the extraordinary ones — are examined in the new book, Grace Kelly: Hollywood Dream Girl, by Jay Jorgensen and Manoah Bowman. In the book, Lizanne Kelly LeVine, Grace’s sister, says Rainier fell into their family almost immediately. She and her husband Don LeVine had Grace and Rainier over for dinner in the days that followed their 1955 engagement, and were...

Image Source: Getty / Bettmann Fairy tales might not be real, but Grace Kelly came as close as a person can to truly living one. The Rear Window actress, who grew up in an affluent Philadelphia family, ended up leaving behind her booming Hollywood film career to marry a real-life royal, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, after a whirlwind year of courtship. So, how did Grace meet Prince Rainier, exactly? Well, there likely never would have been a connection between the two without the Cannes Film Festival. Ahead of the glamorous annual movie event in 1955, biographers have claimed that Prince Rainier was looking for an American wife specifically. Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis allegedly suggested he marry Marilyn Monroe, who was apparently keen on the match herself, but the prince rejected the idea since he didn't find her public image dignified enough for his family (though it has never been confirmed...

Horror in the ‘50s tended to lean towards the sci-fi end of the spectrum. And why wouldn’t it? This was the atomic age, and hiding under your school desk during a bomb drill (the safest place to be!) was scarier than any monster Hollywood could muster. So as a form of social moralizing (or an excuse to display giant, mutated lizards on screen), filmmakers merged the fear of nuclear annihilation with the need for entertainment. Most filmmakers, that is. Paul Landres’ The Vampire (1957) is a deliberate ride through the (mostly) human condition, small in scope but surprisingly big on emotion. Just don’t expect any vampires, radioactive, sparkly, or otherwise.
What you do get is a story much closer to Stevenson than Stoker, a simple riff on Jekyll and Hyde shot through a cautionary tale about America’s then growing concern with pill poppin’. The Vampire is more concerned...

For those worried that the long-gestating film adaptation of the Jane Austen horror parody Pride and Prejudice and Zombies had succumbed to its own zombie apocalypse, relief has just arrived in the form of a first trailer. The film, directed by Burr Steers, stars Lily James and Sam Riley as the famous Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy — who now not only need to worry about social mobility and their complicated romance, but also fending off some upper-crust walking dead. But don't worry: They've got Michonne's sword! High society really is as cutthroat as it seems.Watch the film's teaser below:...

This year's Tribeca Film Festival is paying a special tribute to Frank Sinatra, with Sinatra at 100: Film & Music, a centennial celebration honoring his film career. As part of the event, there will be an April 21 screening of On The Town (1949) with High Society (1956) and Some Came Running (1958) being shown April 24. Among the three films, the 1958 feature, one of the greatest of all American movies, is of particular interest, especially when it comes to the dual nature of Sinatra the man, the actor, the screen persona, and the very films that frequently drew his talent. As a remake of The Philadelphia Story (1940), High Society depicts the humorous romantic frivolity of upper crust socialites. Some Came Running is something entirely different. This is “low society.” In Some Came Running, those on the margins, those who make up society's lower rungs, those are the more earnest, the more recognizable, and the more interesting.

In the last three years, Anna Kendrick‘s career has exploded. Thanks to the little a cappella flick that could, Pitch Perfect, the 29-year-old actress has been the go-to girl for all-things movie musical. And now, she’s starring in the most heartbreaking of them all, Richard Lagravenese‘s The Last Five Years.
In the big screen adaptation of Jason Robert Brown‘s original production, in theaters and VOD now, Kendrick plays Cathy, a struggling actress whose marriage crumbles amidst the success of her distracted husband’s (Jeremy Jordan) novelist career.
