This year’s Sf Indiefest, San Francisco’s first independent film festival of the year, will take place virtually from February 4-21, 2021. This year’s selection includes 42 shorts and 38 features from 20 countries. Two of the three world premieres are, notably, Asian selections – including Bay Area Asian-American production “Girl in Golden Gate Park” and spicy Japanese fiction “Body Remember”. Other notables include the film festival’s only international premiere, “Roll” — which had previously premiered in the Nara International Film Festival — a reckless coming-of-age film caught between celluloid and of course, a romantic interest.

Romanticized of late by disgruntled Americans enraged with President Trump and threatening immigration to its friendly northern neighbor, Canada has always held a significant spot in the zeitgeist of popular culture (Celine Dion! Justin Beiber! Ryan Gosling!). “Everything is better in Canada!” has been the ubiquitous trope echoing across the United States these past four years, with promises of socialized medicine, fresh, crisp air and a bounty of polite Canadians within reach across the border — if only those borders were open.
But aside from deeply entrenched stereotypes in the way of moose, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tim Hortons donuts, what do Americans truly know and understand about Canada?
The Whistler Film Fest, launching its 20th edition Dec. 1-20, has always emphasized its commitment to bolstering the global exposure for Canadian filmmakers — and, by proxy, Canadian cultural content. This year is no exception. With an online model in place due...

In a special Thanksgiving episode, “The Masked Singer” determined the last two members of the final Super Six of season 4. The title of the show said it all: “The Group C Finals – The Masks Give Thanks.” The trio of celebrities still standing in this third group performed once again disguised as the Broccoli, Jellyfish and Mushroom. Puppy Love, a comedic drama from Canadian director Michael Maxxis, will open the 2020 Oldenburg International Film Festival, Germany’s leading independent film fest.
The debut feature from the music-video helmer stars Hopper Penn (Sean Penn’s son) as a prophetic young dishwasher with brain-damage who falls for a homeless prostitute, played by Paz de la Huerta (Enter the Void). The ensemble cast includes indie stalwarts Rosanna Arquette, Wayne Newton, and Michael Madsen.
