You might want to smash your head on the wall after learning about all the journeys that led to Waterworld’s creation, a tale rich with sorts of twists and turns. The tumultuous trip of the film’s high seas production is storied, but with the tense involvement of two Kevins—director Kevin Reynolds and lead Kevin Costner—the astronomical costs and the perilous sets, are not as often recounted as its origin story.
The production of Waterworld was just drawn out; the script was initially penned by Peter Rader in the 1980s. Around this period, a number of tales served as inspiration for the movie, including those of Mad Max. The film had already been rewritten multiple times by the time Reynolds and Costner were attached.

George Miller is one of the most fantastic storytellers in the entertainment industry, credited with having birthed critically acclaimed projects that range from the comedy/musical Happy Feet to the horror/action Dead Calm.
While he has left fans in the fantasy world through films like Babe, he has also managed to unsettle his audiences through a saga as remarkable as his Mad Max one.

Talking about that, this specific action/adventure universe of his that never ceases to leave his viewers unsettled has not only been in his mind for a long time but has also ascended from themes of his own past.
If anything, the things seen in his lore are widely synonymous with what Miller went through in his past, establishing him as the true legend that many already deem him to be.

It will be a real shame if George Miller doesn’t get to make his mooted follow-up, The Wasteland, because of the low takings of such a creatively ambitious and oddball film as Furiosa
The film industry is obsessed with box office figures. The Tinseltown trades spend far more time focusing on whichever recent blockbuster has lost $200m than they do on the movies that pick up critical plaudits. There is a constant sense that, with such huge budgets flying around in the era of Avatar: The Way of Water and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny that the entire financial Hollywood house of cards could be about to come crashing down faster than one can mutter “massive CGI mega-budget” under one’s breath.

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But nine years have passed, the Fury Road prequel Furiosa is now in theatres,...

After his star-studded roles in other superhero and action franchises, including his long-term work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the latest addition as Dr. Dementus in the Mad Max lore, Chris Hemsworth, seems to be all set to jump into his next big project. What’s more, his next role may reportedly be in a collision movie of two of the biggest action franchises of all time.

According to exclusive reports, Hemsworth is being eyed to star in a crossover movie of multi-billionaire G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises. But as much as this is a piece of fantastic news for all of his fans out there, Peter Cullen fans don’t seem to be all too happy about it. And, if anything, their anger just may be over nothing if these reports turn out to be true.

A long-anticipated prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy-led Furiosa premiered last Friday, on May 24, 2024. With all the hype surrounding the movie and its predecessor’s legacy, we expected Furiosa to conquer the box office in no time… However, that hasn’t happened so far, and things are looking pretty bleak for Taylor-Joy’s first post-apocalyptic outing in terms of finance.
Furiousa’s Opening Weekend Was Unimpressive
Despite being a phenomenally well-crafted movie in a very well-established franchise with a really star-studded cast, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga failed to rake up a significant amount of money in its opening weekend. For the first six days of its theatrical run, Furiosa can only show $68M as its box office haul, and it gets worse.
The split between domestic and global markets is almost even and thus doesn’t matter. What’s important, though, is that Furiosa had a...

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.
Directed once again by "Bad Boys for Life" duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the upcoming fourth entry in the "Bad Boys" franchise is going to easily top the charts on its opening weekend with a debut in the $48 to $58 million range, per Box Office Theory. We have reported that George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win the Memorial Day weekend box office ahead of The Garfield Movie, but that the overall results were disappointing and that the whole weekend was the worst in 30 years, as far as the box office is concerned. While everyone is praising Furiosa, and we know that the studio is proud of the project, it hasn’t drawn a lot of people to cinemas, and some are afraid that Furiosa‘s result at the box office might influence the future of the Mad Max franchise in a negative way.
As we know, and Miller himself has talked about this, there are ideas for more movies and we know that the story for Mad Max: The Wasteland has already been written, but whether the movie will ever be made might depend on how much money Furiosa earns in its theatrical run,...

Nine years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road and nearly 45 years after his original Mad Max movie debut, George Miller brought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact that Furiosa would be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.

Rian Johnson’s next stab at the murder mystery format is sprinting headlong towards production, with another famous face or two joining an already starry cast.

Challengers’ Josh O’Connor and Civil War's Cailee Spaeny were first to join our list of suspects, followed swiftly by Kerry Washington and Andrew Scott.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga witnessed an underwhelming opening weekend during Memorial Day, despite its hype and the fantastic cast assembled for the film. Connected to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road as a prequel, George Miller’s latest installment had initially anticipated big box office numbers. However, Furiosa’s path to Valhalla was unfortunately tarnished.

The weak first-weekend performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is concerningly indicative of larger issues with the Hollywood box office. Note that the latest flick, under the direction of George Miller, is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Sure, the stellar cast that it brought together made the movie one of the most anticipated of the year, especially in the film enthusiast community.
Thus, one can’t help but wonder: What magic could Charlize Theron have woven had she returned as the indomitable Furiosa in Miller’s ambitious saga? Sadly, her absence in the anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is obvious.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly beat The Garfield Movie by less than $1 million over the Memorial Day box office weekend, making it clear the film isn’t quite the blockbuster Warner Bros. was hoping it would be. But what does this mean for the next Mad Max movie?
Unfortunately, the news isn’t good, at least for now. Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

While it made $65 million dollars worldwide in its global opening, it’s fair to say that the domestic opening for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” at $32 million, was underwhelming and, worrisomely, might be the end of the ‘Mad Max’ franchise. Then again, “Mad Max: Fury Road” never opened up substantially higher, only earning $45 million in its early May debut in 2015.

It's turning out to be a long ride home for Jason1.
He and Amanda's learning how to use The Box as transportation on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 5 is a lot like those movies where the hero has to determine how to fly an aircraft using controls labeled in a foreign language.
At least in that situation, the hero can use intuition to some degree. That primarily hasn't worked out for Jason1 and Amanda.
Instead, they've had to navigate using a brutal trial-and-error method, emphasizing error. So far, it hasn't killed either of them, but they've certainly been imperiled.
The pair has faced a steep learning curve since escaping from Leighton2's Velocity Labs on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 2.
They've landed on a snow planet, a flooded world, and another decimated by a pandemic. They've discovered seeming familiar to Jason1 doesn't make for a sure thing.

George Miller is astounded by the enduring popularity of the 'Mad Max' franchise. The 79-year-old director has helmed the new dystopian prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' and explained that he never expected it to be captivating audiences over four decades on from the release of the original movie.Asked if he expected the appeal of 'Mad Max' to span generations, George told IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast: "Never!"It's best expressed in John Lennon's notion that life is what happens when you're making other plans."Miller explained that the demands of 1979's 'Mad Max' had put him off from directing again and it was only when he began to gauge the world's reaction to the film that he was convinced otherwise. He said: "I began to realise that inadvertently, we had hit on something archetypal."In Japan, he was a samurai.

Miller’s approach resonates well beyond the box office; his canceled Justice League project, still a lament among superhero aficionados, serves as proof of the vision that could have reinvented DC’s pantheon.

The fourth episode of Dark Matter was dedicated to explaining the mechanics of the box that allowed people to travel between different realities. The characters and the handful of people watching the Apple TV+ series learned that the box was using the traveler’s last thoughts to determine their destination. Since Jason1 and Amanda were in a constant state of distress and anxiety, they ended up in realities that were actively trying to kill them. They even got lost in a snowy reality, and they had to use their wits and grit to get back into the box. Meanwhile, Jason2 was chilling in Jason1’s reality. He secured his future by starting negotiations with Leighton1 for the rights to the box so that he could shower Daniela and Charlie with gifts and money. But that didn’t go down well with Daniela at all. Additionally, in an attempt to catch Jason1 and Amanda,...

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

George Miller, the legendary filmmaker behind the iconic Mad Max series, is once again delving into monochromatic territory. It’s confirmed that his latest film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will receive a black-and-white edition dubbed Tinted Black and Chrome. Miller announced this version during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused. The decision to create a monochrome edition stems from his ongoing fascination with the format. As Miller explained, I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. Miller’s Vision for Furiosa The...

Over the course of 45 years and five films, director George Miller has created something unparalleled in the world of action cinema: an epic franchise that started great (with 1979’s “Mad Max”) and has grown exponentially more audacious, complex, and visionary with each subsequent film. Each time Miller returns to the “Mad Max” universe — from “The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985) to “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) — he expands upon and deepens the story with increasing ambition, a project that has now culminated in the most epic (in both length and mythological impact) entry in the series to date, “Furiosa.” The longevity of the series and the enduring fertility of Miller’s imagination have proven one of the movies’ great surprises over the years — especially to Miller himself.
In fact, when asked whether he ever envisioned the “Mad Max” saga lasting for decades, Miller had a quick answer. “Never!” he...

Fortnite continues to maintain its popularity thanks to the creativity of the developers but some of their ideas are not for everybody. Players can now eliminate enemies with mounted weapons on vehicles and one famous streamer isn’t too fond of it and stands by his opinion.

Anya Taylor-Joy is back in action with the Mad Max franchise in an anticipated project, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga alongside Chris Hemsworth. While some might have predicted it, you wouldn’t be wrong in saying that most people were surprised at the low box office debut for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The film has made approximately $33 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which is one of the worst Memorial Weekend debuts in decades. That would seemingly stop all discussion about more ‘Mad Max’ films in the near future, which means ‘The Wasteland’ might not ever see the light of day.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite films. Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by 2 successful sequels in the 80s.

The summer box office opened up to Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The George Miller directorial served as a prequel and a spinoff to the 2015 Tom Hardy film and carried forward the legacy of practical effects, breathtaking stunt choreography, and pure action. As for its cast, aside from the two headlining leads, it also stars the Thor actor’s wife, Elsa Pataky. However, eagle-eyed viewers could notice a certain oddity revolving around the actress.

George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise Mad Max has reached new heights – now we have five films about road wars and deadly battles in the scorching sands.
With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in theaters, we rank all the films in the franchise, from the outright failure to the action masterpiece.
5. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, 1985
The city of Bartertown is ruled by the treacherous ruler Entity. To consolidate her power, she turned to Max, an unsurpassed master of street fighting. And the law of the Thunderdome arena is extremely cruel: two in, only one out.
Max must lead a group of lost children out of the desert to lay the foundation for a more humane civilization than the one born after the nuclear apocalypse of World War III.
The movie is George Miller's most exotic entry in the entire history of Mad Max – so exotic that fans of the franchise prefer to ignore Beyond Thunderdome.

The violent Wasteland of George Millers Mad Max franchise isn't exactly bustling with sympathetic characters, and even the titular protagonist is really more of a reluctant hero doing what he can to survive.
2015's Fury Road did introduce a slightly more selfless take on Max (Tom Hardy) along with a genuinely heroic figure in the form of Furiosa (Charlize Theron), and in addition to charting the origin of the Immortan Joe's Imperator (now played by Anya Taylor-Joy), Miller's prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, features the debut of the thoughtful, compassionate Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke).
Spoilers follow.
Furiosa forms a close (possibly romantic) bond with Jack when she joins his crew, but their relationship comes to a tragic end when Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his men ambush the War Rig at the Bullet Farm.

As he did with Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller plans to release a monochromatic, Black And Chrome edition of this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Following in the dusty tyre tracks of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga could eventually get its own black and white edition.
Miller revealed as much on Happy Sad Confused, the podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, in which the Mad Max filmmaker said the monochrome Furiosa’s would be called Tinted Black And Chrome.
It’s a title that echoes Black And Chrome, the colour-free edition of Mad Max: Fury Road released in 2016. At the time, Miller described it as “the best version of the movie.”

Call it a "Mad Max" rite of passage. Ever since director George Miller's 1979 original introduced the world to the utter absurdity that is post-apocalyptic Australia, the gas-guzzling franchise has all but become a genre unto itself. After five total movies, culminating with this past weekend's "Furiosa," audiences are now well aware of what to expect from these idiosyncratic blockbusters. High-octane action, poignant ruminations on the future of our species, and a motley collection of freaks, weirdos, and badasses are well worth the price of admission alone. As far as series traditions go, however, one deceptively subtle trope returned in full force for "Furiosa."

While it’s understood that “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a prequel that leads directly into the events of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” director George Miller said he and his team quite heavily debated the inclusion of footage from “Fury Road” during the “Furiosa” credits.
While “Furiosa” doesn’t exactly have a post-credits scene, there is a montage of footage from Miller’s 2015 epic “Fury Road” that plays during the credits, teasing what happens to the character of Furiosa after the events of the film you just watched — played in “Furiosa” by Anya Taylor-Joy and in “Fury Road” by Charlize Theron. When it comes to a George Miller directed Mad Max saga movie, actors are committed 1000% to the stunts, but composers are there too for the long haul.
So much so, that Furiosa composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie Xl moved to Sydney, Australia to pen the score, his third with Miller after Mad Max: Fury Road and Three Thousand Years of Longing. In fact, there’s a fine line between the metallic bang of motorcycles and trucks, and bass, and one of the arbitrator of that is Holkenborg who had a hand in sound mixing Furiosa.
You can listen to our conversation with Holkenborg out of Deadline’s Cannes Studio below:
Holkenborg points out that when it came to the music in Furiosa, it’s character-driven given how it centers around the protagonist’s life from 8 to 18 years of age, versus Fury Road, which took place in a desert race of 48 hours.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. Mad Max: Fury Road made a total of $379 million worldwide, a number that the prequel will likely have a hard time equalling unless word of mouth and repeat business are strong. Woman Thou Art Loosed: Miller Wades into the Wasteland
In all likelihood, George Miller presumably will be closing out his filmography the same way it began, fleshing out the iconic dystopian desert world he created back in 1979 with Mad Max and its original successive sequels. As fate would have it, a powerful figure rising out of his celebrated 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, would get her own origin story in this universe, which arrives with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Strangely, much like Charlize Theron pulled focus over the titular Tom Hardy in the earlier film, Anya Taylor-Joy is the muted center of her own universe in this installment, thanks in part to a more vivacious, arguably more dynamic role for a new character portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.…...

Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

Garfield has another reason to hate Mondays.
In a box office nail biter, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” narrowly emerged victorious over “The Garfield Movie” on North American charts. On Sunday, Warner Bros. and Sony both claimed its own movie ranked No. 1 with roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the Memorial Day holiday on Monday.
With Monday’s estimates, “Furiosa” ended up generating $26.2 million over the weekend and $32 million for the four days. “Garfield” was shockingly close behind with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million over the four days.
No matter the final order, it’s the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades — excluding 2020 when theaters were entirely closed due to Covid. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 are particularly tough — down by nearly 36% — given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million, one of the best debuts for the holiday.
