In the first few episodes of Apple TV+ series Palm Royale, Carol Burnett is entirely horizontal. And rightly so, since her character Norma Dellacorte in a coma. Fortunately though, Norma recovers in time to rip through some seriously juicy scenes with Kristin Wiig, who names Burnett, who turned 91 in April, as her career inspiration. “When they told me who was going to be in it,” says Burnett, “Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney and Laura Dern and Ricky Martin and Julia Duffy, I said, ‘I don’t care what it is. I want to be a part of it.’” From Burnett’s early days hosting long-running comedy-variety series The Carol Burnett Show, to films like A Wedding, Annie and Mad About You, to Better Call Saul, she has blazed a trail, garnering seven Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy along the way. Here, she recalls some favorite memories, picks her best...

The dogged pursuit of the relationship unicorn that is the good break-up informs the wit and winking wisdom of Jonás Trueba’s “The Other Way Around,” a delightful showcase for the Spanish director’s lithe, airy style, here accented with glistening strands of Madrileño meta-melancholy. A hip, popular twosome decide to call it quits after 14 years, cuing a very funny yet properly grown-up portrait of the ideal couple trying to smoothe, and even to celebrate, their transition into ideal exes. It’s the celebration aspect that will prove their undoing. If the good breakup is rare, the joyous breakup is completely mythical.
Filmmaker Ale (Itsaso Arana) and her actor boyfriend of 14 years Alex (Vito Sanz) have decided — mutually, they insist — to pack their bags for Splitsville. They lie in the dark in their still-shared bed with a poignant politeness recognizable to anyone who has similarly ended a longterm relationship prior to canceling a longterm lease.

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

Cameron Diaz officially left Hollywood back in 2014, but she has seemingly changed her mind. Back in the day, the actress made her final appearance in a musical comedy film Annie where she starred alongside Jamie Foxx.
Ironically enough, Diaz’s first ever movie in 10 years will show her partnering once again with Foxx in Netflix’s upcoming spy action film.
Cameron Diaz’s big comeback to the screens will be featured in the streaming’s movie Back in Action. The title gives quite a big hint at the main plot twist as the movie follows two former CIA agents Emily and Matt who, after having left their careers beside, decide to start a family.
Realizing that their cover was suddenly blown, the characters are called back in action that roughly thwarted their plans.

It’s been almost 10 years since Cameron Diaz’s last film appearance — but we have some good news. With Back in Action, Diaz is, well, back in action alongside her Any Given Sunday and Annie co-star Jamie Foxx. The pair play seemingly average parents with a big secret: They used to be incredibly skilled secret agents. Coaching Little League is a bit of a step down.
Of course, as the title suggests, the couple’s low-key suburban existence is not long for this world. Soon, the two are dragged back into the life they left behind, with explosive results. Read on to learn more about Back in Action, and get ready to join Diaz and Foxx when they land on Netflix this year.

Ryan Reynolds has given his fans just what they seek from him through every single one of his performances. This especially includes his anti-hero Deadpool, which has even given fans the delight of seeing their favorite actor immaculately fight the most brutal and scariest villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, always standing his ground no matter how barbarous they were.
Ryan Reynolds in 6 Underground.
But while those menacing villains don’t seem to be able to terrify him, there’s something else that managed to do that part. And, surprisingly enough, this something else actually included Reynolds performing in front of his Korean fans while promoting the sequel to his 2016 masterpiece film of the beloved anti-hero six years ago, even though he was beyond “scared” to do it!

Sarah Hyland Confirms Love Island Departure, Upset How News Revealed
Earlier on Wednesday, March 27th, word broke that Ariana Madix would be replacing Sarah Hyland as the host of Love Island. She had guest-starred on the hit reality series during the last season so it was like passing the torch. The reason that Sarah would be exiting was due to a scheduling conflict so it did not appear to be bad blood or anything of the sort. However, nothing had been signed for Ariana but there was nothing holding her back. She is currently wrapping up her run as Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Jonah Hill will be directing Outcome for Apple, that’s going to star Cameron Diaz and Keanu Reeves. More here.
After a long hiatus from acting, Cameron Diaz has begun dipping her toe back into the world of moviemaking. After starring in 2014’s Annie, Diaz retired to focus on other things before eventually being tempted back almost a decade later to star alongside Jamie Foxx in the yet-to-release (and appropriately-titled) action flick, Back in Action.
That one is due out at sometime this year on Netflix, and while we’re looking forward to seeing her appear on our TVs, Diaz’s next project may well restore the actor to where she truly belongs: the silver screen. Jonah Hill has signed Cameron Diaz up to star alongside Keanu Reeves in Outcome, a dark comedy for Apple Studios.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

Before Blu-ray or DVD, before you could just open up an app on your phone and stream things, there was the beloved VHS tape, that most bulky of physical media. Whether you rented them from Blockbuster, owned a library of them and organized them neatly in the shelves running alongside your home entertainment center, used them to record your favorite movies or TV shows, or simply prayed for your teacher to pull one out on a Friday afternoon in middle school, the VHS tape was king of ’80s and ’90s home media.

Peter Ramsey, Caleeb Pinkett Producing Live-Action Feature Adaptation Of Comic Book ‘The Storm Clan’
Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. Previously orphaned, the teenagers gifted with bionic technology see it provide them with the opportunity to protect themselves from the threats of the streets, also empowering them to take advantage of life instead of being taken advantage of, and most importantly, giving them comfort and sense of belonging within a family.

Mark Gustafson, the stop-motion specialist who won an Oscar this year for his work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, died Thursday. He was 63.
Del Toro announced the news Friday on social media, posting: “I admired Mark Gustafson, even before I met him. A pillar of stop motion animation — a true artist. A compassionate, sensitive and mordantly witty man. A Legend — and a friend that inspired and gave hope to all around him. … Today we honor and miss him.”
The Oregonian newspaper also reported his death.
Gustafson also worked on the stop-motion California Raisins characters early in his career and served as animation director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), another Oscar-nominated stop-motion film.
When del Toro took on the task of retelling Carlo Collodi’s 1883 fable about a wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy, he tapped Gustafson as his directing partner. The duo also earned BAFTA and Annie awards,...

Plot: When a ninety-four-year-old grandmother is ripped off by phone scammers for $10k, she goes on a mission to get her money back.
Review: Watching Thelma is a bittersweet experience. While led by the always delightful June Squibb, the film co-stars the late Richard Roundtree in his meatiest role in years. Between this and the recent Jane Fonda movie Moving On, Roundtree was on the verge of the comeback that long-eluded him, only for him to die suddenly at 81 in the fall. It’s a shame because the former Shaft star is a delight in this low-key caper flick.
It offers a long overdue leading role to the great June Squibb. At ninety-four, the actress has been in high demand in recent years, seemingly still sharp as a tack. In Thelma, she plays the title role, being a doting Grandmother pushing back at the notion that she’s too old to live independently.

For the second time in six years, the Best Actress category looked to be on track to feature nominees from films nominated for Best Picture. But just like six years ago, it came up short — and it once again involved Margot Robbie.

Every film but “Nyad” is nominated for Best Picture. Gladstone, Hüller, Mulligan and Stone were all expected to get in, but Bening was in seventh place in the odds. “I didn’t expect to get so old,” sighs 93-year-old Thelma Post (June Squibb) in Josh Margolin’s hilarious and unexpectedly poignant mash-up of Point Blank and The Straight Story. Squibb, so good in Nebraska, once again represents for the hip-op generation, bringing wisdom and truth — plus the best waspish comic timing since Maggie Smith in Robert Altman’s Gosford Park — to a comic action-thriller that has fun with the pitfalls of old age but does so with dignity and respect. Appeal should be across the board; indeed, the film would make a great May-December double bill with the 2022 Aubrey Plaza vehicle Emily the Criminal, a similar study of an ordinary woman sucked into a shady underworld.
Margolin lays out all the film’s key elements with refreshing speed, opening with 24-year-old Daniel (Fred Hechinger) patiently helping the recently widowed...

Nicole Kidman revealed on the “Radio Times Podcast” (via Business Insider) that she was once told she would never have a career in Hollywood because of her height. Long before she became a star in the U.S. and an Oscar winner for “The Hours,” Kidman was an aspiring actor in Australia and said her height was often challenged during auditions as a teen.
“I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall,'” Kidman said.
At one open audition for a role in “Annie,” Kidman remembered actors were being measured for their height at the door. Performers who were too tall were being instantly rejected, so she had to fight her way into the casting room.

Actress Nicole Kidman, who stands at 5ft 11, confessed she lied that she was just half an inch shorter, 5ft10 and a half, after she was bullied as a child for her height and called names such as “Stalky”. “I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall,'” she told Radio Times magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
Even now she is a Hollywood star, Kidman has to think twice about her choice of heel.
She continued: “People would say, ‘How’s the air up there?’”
“Now, I get, ‘You’re so much taller than I thought’, or men grappling with how high my heels should be. Whenever I go on the red carpet, I get sent shoes that are always so high. I’m like, ‘Do they have a kitten heel? I’m going to be the tallest person — a giraffe!’”

The Oscar-shortlisted and Annie-nominated animated short “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko” couldn’t be (sadly) timelier with the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. The 11-minute indie takes place in an alternate World War I, where a secret chess match is played across enemy lines with the assistance of a heroic carrier pigeon that delivers the chess moves over the battlefield. Pixar alum Dave Mullins wrote and directed the short, animated by Wētā FX Limited and executive produced by Sean Ono Lennon.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine coincided with Lennon wanting to make an animated project around his parents’ popular protest song “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” So he approached a friend at Pixar, who recommended Mullins (“Lou”), who left Pixar on his 20th anniversary in 2021 and started ElectroLeague, a real-time animation company with co-founder Brad Booker (producer of “War Is Over”).

Layoffs are expected to hit Disney-owned Pixar Animation Studios later this year.
Tech Crunch, which first reported the news, suggested that this could affect as much as 20 percent of Pixar’s 1,300 workforce, though The Hollywood Reporter understands this estimate is higher than what is actually being planned. According to Tech Crunch, layoffs may include employees hired to create content for Disney+.
THR has reached out to Pixar for comment.
If layoffs do occur, it would follow another rare round of layoffs at the Disney-owned studio. Last June, Pixar was hit by the Disney layoffs, which affected 75 employees, including Lightyear director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman.
Since the start of the pandemic, Pixar — which maintains its campus in Emeryville, outside San Francisco — has seen its remarkable success streak suffer. That includes Lightyear, its 2023 return to theatrical exhibition, which flopped.
It rebounded with 2023’s Elemental, which brought in nearly $500 million worldwide...

In a competitive year in animation, Nimona, based on the graphic novel by Nd Stevenson, leads the 51st Annie Awards feature competition with nine nominations includes best feature, direction and writing.
In the top category for best feature, the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood — which hands out the annual animation prizes — also nominated Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume, which earned seven nominations apiece; and Paramount and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which collected six nominations. Pixar’s Elemental also earned a total of six nominations, though it was snubbed in the top category.
Nimona, The Boy and the Heron, Across the Spider-Verse, Mutant Mayhem and Robot Dreams (which was also nominated for best independent feature) received directing noms.
Disney’s centennial-celebrating Wish and Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour both failed to earn a single nomination.
