The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

Everyone’s favorite killer doll is headed back to the small screen with “Chucky” Season 3: Part 2 on April 10, but are any further movies being planned at this time?
Created by Don Mancini, the “Chucky” television series remarkably plays around with existing elements from all previous films without disregarding Anything from the past. From the original Child’s Play to sequels including Child’s Play 2, Bride of Chucky and even Seed of Chucky, it’s all one cohesive timeline that Mancini remains deeply committed to.
Of course, the most recent film in the Child’s Play franchise was the 2019 remake, to date the only movie in the saga that’s Not part of Mancini’s vision. Is Mancini’s original incarnation going to spend his final days on TV, while another Chucky will be featured in the movies? It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves for the last few years,...

In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

In 1974, Tobe Hooper‘s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre changed the face of horror. Next month, actors Ed Neal, John Dugan, Allen Danziger, Teri McMinn, and William Vail will participate in the first official 50th anniversary cast reunion at Creep I.E. Con in Southern California.
Brett Wagner, who donned the Leatherface in the 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre before suffering from heat stroke during the production, will also be among the celebrity guests. Dubbed “The Lost Leatherface,” he dawned the iconic flesh mask as he claimed the remake’s first victim, played by Eric Balfour.
“We were filming the summer months in Austin,” Wagner explains. “It was so hot. I felt it coming. Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was initially meant to be a satire of the commercial madness that swept the world when Cabbage Patch Kids proliferated through the marketplace a few years before. What if, "Child's Play" asked, the soul of a vicious serial killer possessed your ultra-hot Christmas toy? The result was a genuinely creepy supernatural thriller about a young boy named Andy (Alex Vincent) his single mom (Catherine Hicks) and the mysterious Good Guy doll who likely contains the personality of Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray (Brad Dourif), known to the police as the Lakeshore Strangler.
Like many of the slasher films of the 1980s, "Child's Play" was extensively sequelized. The mythos of Chucky the killer doll expanded, leading to strange byzantine rules of voodoo magic (Chucky uses a magical amulet and magic spells to shunt his soul into a doll body), as well as inter-doll mating, and a lot of queerness.

After making Baby Oopsie, Baby Oopsie 2: Murder Dolls, and Baby Oopsie 3: Burn Baby Burn, which were spin-offs that focused on one character from Full Moon’s Demonic Toys franchise, writer/director William Butler moved on to a different Demonic Toys spin-off: Demonic Toys: Jack Attack. The movie was released through the Full Moon Features streaming service at the start of September, and now Full Moon has announced that Blu-ray and DVD copies are available!

Chucky the killer doll has come back a whole lot of times since we first saw him in the 1988 classic Child’s Play. He has starred in several big screen sequels, a couple direct-to-video sequels, and now he’s three seasons deep into a TV series that runs on both Syfy and USA Network (as well as the Peacock streaming service). As he has made his way through the decades, many of his co-stars have also returned to share the screen with him again and again. But among those who haven’t returned is Chris Sarandon, who played Detective Mike Norris in the original film. During an interview conducted by People to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the original Child’s Play, Sarandon revealed that he would be willing to come back for another Chucky project… even though he turned down the chance to appear in Child’s Play 2.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!

Has there ever been a more hypable roster of haunted houses to grace Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights? I don't mean to spew hyperbole; that's a genuine question. Maybe it's my specific horror taste showing. I adored "Evil Dead Rise," have a soft spot for holiday-themed horror, consider Chucky my favorite slasher icon, and think the world of "The Last of Us" as both a game and a series. Anticipation came easier than usual for this year's Horror Nights event, especially with a side quest to score one of 2023's signature voice-activated Chucky popcorn buckets.

Look who’s stalking! You guessed it: Chucky. In August of 1991, the foul-mouthed Good Guy returned less than a year after the release of Child’s Play 2. Nine months! So, why the quick turnaround? That’s a good question, and one the Halloweenies spend plenty of time with as they continue their coverage of the franchise with Child’s Play 3.

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise).
If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

Sorry Jack, Chucky‘s back. Indeed he was in 1990, exactly two years following the release of Tom Holland’s 1988 blockbuster Child’s Play. By then, Brad Dourif‘s unstoppable Good Guy doll was a household name, feared by children and adored by teenagers across the nation. So, when Child’s Play 2 arrived, let’s just say Chucky came in a brand new bag.

You think Blumhouse’s M3GAN is a big deal? From 1988 to 1991, Chucky was even bigger. From 7-Eleven to Spencer’s Gifts, American stores were crammed to the brim with Child’s Play comics, toys, posters, bumper stickers, magazines, books and t-shirts.
For me, a tiny tot who lived in constant terror of the quote-unquote Good Guy, it was an absolute living hell. Back then my brother (four years my senior) would beg for every piece of Chucky media he could get his little hands on. He adorned his walls with posters, rented the movies constantly, and would even read passages from the novelizations of Child’s Play 2 and 3 to drive me out of his bedroom.
Let me tell you, that last one always worked. To see an image of Chucky was bad enough, but to hear a bedtime story filtered through his twisted perspective? Traumatizing doesn’t begin to describe it.

Sometimes when a horror franchise is really on a roll, we’ll get sequels that are just one year apart from each other. But the waiting period between Child’s Play 2 and the movie we’re looking at in the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, Child’s Play 3 (watch it Here) was even shorter than a year. The third Child’s Play movie reached theatres just nine months after the second one! With such a quick development and production, is it any surprise that Child’s Play 3 turned out to be one of the least popular entries in the Chucky franchise? To find out all about the making of Child’s Play 3, check out the video embedded above.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Chucky Actually,” the Season 2 finale of “Chucky” on Syfy and USA Network.
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, Chucky was using a chainsaw to bisect the mayor right through her blouse.
In the Season 2 finale of “Chucky,” the joyfully murderous doll chose Christmas Eve to reveal he wasn’t dead after the exorcism in last week’s penultimate episode. But did anyone really believe the Power of Christ would be that compelling to him?
After transferring himself into a secret Good Guy doll hidden by his now-dead accomplice Dr. Mixter (Rosemary Dunsmore), Chucky finally made his move on those meddling kids Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Björgvin Arnarson) and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind).
While Chucky is most associated with Halloween, which is where Season 2 began, creator Don Mancini seized the chance to bookend the season with some Yuletide cheer from the world’s worst toy.

Over 30 years ago, horror fans were introduced to cinema’s most infamous, beloved, and fun-sized slasher – Chucky. While he has had quite the success on the silver screen and small screen, we’re going all the way back to where it started. Don Mancini’s original terrifying Child’s Play, directed by Tom Holland (no relation to the friendly neighborhood one), paved the way for the killer Chucky doll to become the formidable horror icon that he is today. Child’s Play 2 (directed by John Lafia with a screenplay by Don Mancini) ups the kill count, wisecracks, and special effects even if the terror takes more of a back seat this time around. But which Chuck is the one that you don’t f**k with? Only one way to find out: Face Off!

Plot: Authors Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins look back at the making of all seven films in the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise.
Review: For the last ten years or so, author Dustin McNeill appears to have dedicated his life to crafting “scary good books on scary good movies”. He has written two books on the Phantasm franchise, detailed Freddy vs. Jason’s long journey through development hell, covered the Halloween franchise (up to the 2018 film), and then wrote a book about more than twenty Halloween movie scripts and pitches that never made it into production. Along the way, he even wrote a book about the Jaws ride. For the Halloween books – Taking Shape and Taking Shape II – McNeill had Travis Mullins as a co-writer. Now McNeill and Mullins have turned their attention to another one of the horror genre’s most popular franchises: the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise. With their...

Many horror fans say they grew up with Chucky, but none can claim a connection to the slashing doll quite like filmmaker Kyra Elise Gardner. As the daughter of special effects legend Tony Gardner – who helped bring Chucky to life countless times – she experienced Chucky’s evolution at home. Not every four-year-old can say Chucky was waiting for them after kindergarten class!
Since Seed of Chucky, Tony Gardner has been the head puppeteer of our favorite pint-sized murderer, giving Kyra Elise Gardner some killer memories of her father’s meticulous design work and puppeteering. Now, Gardner describes Chucky as “a little brother,” who travels with her to film festivals or watches her from the corner of the room during interviews like the creepiest (and best) “stuffed animal.” But her bond to the doll and its connection to her family has shifted over time, inspiring her to craft a documentary about the experience,...

You just can't keep a Good Guy down. Though momentarily interrupted by molten plastic, shotgun blasts, and an Osha-violating carnival fan, Chucky has managed to survive seven feature films, a surprisingly awesome remake, and a television series entering its second season. The USA and SyFy co-production from "Chucky" creator Don Mancini has been pulling double duty as it follows a new set of characters, while also building upon the momentous events from "Cult of Chucky."
With a full season under its belt, "Chucky" has done a great job of sticking to its decades-long continuity, which has undergone a number of tone shifts. Brad Dourif has voiced the little psycho puppet since the '80s, with only the kind of foul-mouthed flair that he brings to this character. "A true classic never goes out of style," as Chucky would say.

After seven films and an ill-advised reboot, Chucky is set to deploy a new torrent of neighborhood carnage. The killer doll has gone through several reinventions over the years, but now that he’s back in the hands of original creator Don Mancini, he’ll find yet another unsuspecting family to terrorize in his very own TV series.
Chucky has certainly navigated a wild path to the small screen. The Child’s Play franchise started out playing the character straight by charting his efforts to get his murderous psychological hooks into innocent little Andy Barclay, but films one through three were also embracing a slasher genre that appeared to be on its last legs.
Even Mancini thought he may have reached the end of the road with 1991’s Child’s Play 3, but when the horror game changed with Wes Craven’s meta movie Scream in the late-‘90s, Mancini suddenly...

Chucky, the upcoming spinoff series of the venerable Child’s Play horror franchise, is set to bring the terror of a homicidal, serial-killer-spirit-inhabited doll to a new medium and a new generation. However, don’t you dare call it a “reboot,” since the series, like the film franchise, remains the mutilating manifestation of creator Don Mancini, who is unambiguously touting the television show as a continuation of his cinematic continuity. Moreover, the creator reveals that plans for even more films—in conjunction with the show—are also in the works. In other words, brace yourselves for the Chucky Universe!
“An evil too great to play on just one network,” reads the tagline in the new teaser trailer for Chucky, which hypes a series designed for a deluge of doll-dealt deaths, set for a dual network run—under the NBCUniversal umbrella—this fall on USA Network and Syfy. Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin still recalls one viewer’s reaction to Jacob’s Ladder.
“I was stood outside the theatre on the very first day it opened in LA, waiting for the crowds to come out to see how they responded,” Rubin recalls. “As the credits started rolling this guy ran out, probably five feet from me, and yelled at nobody in particular: ‘If I ever meet the guy that wrote that movie, I’ll kill him.’”
It was an extraordinary reaction but, then again, Jacob’s Ladder is an extraordinary movie.
Released on November 2, 1990, the film was only a modest success at the box office, debuting at number one in the US before being knocked off the top spot by Child’s Play 2 just a week later. Syfy’s recently trailer-teased Chucky television series just made a move that will likely assuage skeptical fans of the classic Child’s Play horror film franchise, the return of the murderer-possessed-doll’s definitive voice actor, Brad Dourif.
Indeed, the Child’s Play band is getting back together, with star Dourif now secured, joined by creator Don Mancini and perennial producer David Kirschner to tackle a most intriguing small screen proposition with Chucky. The series, which manifests under the NBCU umbrella via Universal Studio Group’s Universal Content Productions, will enjoy the platform of two major cable channels in corporate cousins Syfy and USA Network; an advantageous position that just improved, having secured the sinister cackle and brutal one-liners of Dourif’s voice role, which he’s thus-far fielded for seven of the franchise films.

John Lafia, best known for co-writing 1988 horror film classic “Child’s Play,” and co-writing and directing “Child’s Play 2,” died on April 29 in Los Angeles, according to a statement from his family. He was 63.
Although a cause of death was not shared, the family offered information about the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which we’ve included at the bottom.
“Child’s Play” creator and screenwriter Don Mancini confirmed the news of Lafia’s passing in a Facebook post, writing:
“Devastated by this news. John was a crucial part of the Chucky family from the very beginning. He co-wrote the original Child’S Play script along with director Tom Holland and myself, and John directed Child’S Play 2 — the consensus favorite film among Chucky fans.
