Indignation (James Schamus)
After helping filmmakers such as Todd Haynes, Ang Lee, and Todd Solondz shape their careers, James Schamus has finally made the leap from producer to director with an adaptation of Philip Roth‘s 2008 novel Indignation. The 1951-set feature follows Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a Newark-bred Jewish teenager heading to his first semester at a Lutheran college in Ohio. In doing so, he avoids the draft for the Korean War, which is claiming extended family and friends as victims.

Highly respected producer worked on Joanna Hogg’s Archipelago and Sally El Hosaini’s My Brother the Devil.
British producer Gayle Griffiths has died following a battle with cancer. She was 49.
Griffiths, who died on Friday (Oct 23) in London, was perhaps best known for producing Joanna Hogg films Archipelago (2010) and Exhibition (2013), which both starred Tom Hiddleston, as well as urban drama My Brother The Devil (2012).
Sally El Hosani, director of My Brother The Devil, wrote on Facebook: “I can honestly say that the film wouldn’t have been what it was without her input and wisdom. She had real vision and believed in the film when many others in the industry didn’t. She was a fighter with a truly generous heart and empathy for the underdog.
“She was never one to make a fuss about her health and all through the filming of My Brother The Devil nobody would have guessed she was also having cancer...

Gotham Season 1, Episode 18: ‘Everyone Has A Cobblepot’
Written by Megan Mostyn-Brown
Directed by Bill Eagles
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
This week’s episode of Gotham follows up “Red Hood” just after Alfred’s wounding, which brings a reunion between Gordon and Bruce. But instead of progressing Bruce’s story, this episode prolongs their separation again for another week so that Gordon can make some genuine headway in establishing some order within the Gcpd. This has been an ongoing process for Gordon in making a change to the corrupt system, and his effect on it has been gradual, as every time Gordon thinks he has made a significant achievement, he finds that he has only cured a symptom and not the cause. This has been a beat that Gotham has repeated a few times during this second half of the season, and it’s almost to the point of being overly repetitive,...

Our mother, Jean Harvey, who has died aged 83, declared at the age of six that she wanted to be an actress. She went on to a successful stage and screen career, receiving widest recognition for her work in television over more than 30 years.
Her most famous role was in Compact (1962), one of the BBC's first soaps, as the editor of the magazine from which the show took its title. She appeared in several classic serials, including North and South (1975) and two versions of Jane Eyre, playing Mrs Reed in the 1973 adaptation and Mrs Fairfax in 1983. Her favourite TV role was as Sally, the wife of Max (George Cole) in A Man of Our Times (1968), for which she received a Bafta nomination.

Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine – romcoms used to be anything but bland
With this year's Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook, Hollywood is attempting to get down and dirty with real people and real problems. But Us films are notoriously bad at this. I Give It a Year is a British comedy about falling out of love – not a romcom, more of a romp-incomp. But whatever happened to the simple idea of the innocently zany finding love?

hollywoodnews.com: Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist” lost a number of key technical categories to Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” but still prevailed in the top Oscar slot on Sunday night, claiming trophies for Best Picture, Director, and Actor (for Jean Dujardin).
It was a great night for Harvey Weinstein, who helped power Meryl Streep to an unexpected win over perceived frontrunner Viola Davis on the Best Actress race. Octavia Spencer (“The Help”) and Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”) rounded out last night’s acting categories.
I went 19 out of 24 in my picks, believing the Academy would spread a lot of its technical love around to films not named “Hugo.” All is all, a successful Oscar season. Here are the winners from the 84th Annual Academy Awards (bolded below):

We will be the one of many movie bloggers covering the Academy Awards, why not just hang out with us. Not only will we be covering the winners and losers, but we will also be covering what happens in between. So with no live performances of the Best Song nominees, will the once in a life time Cirque du Soleil show live up to its expectations or will Academy Producers have wished they had the Muppets sing Man or Muppet on the big stage?
Plus you are already here, so why not stay a while. You already read Karen Divorty‘s predictions. Are they in line with yours? Are you playing it safe in your Oscar pool or are you going all out and have Extremely Close and Incredibly Loud beating out The Artist for Best Picture? We will keep you posted, just remember to keep on refreshing. The Academy...

hollywoodnews.com: Do or die time. After month and months of tracking the Oscar race, it’s time to put up (and shut up) by posting my official picks for Sunday night’s Academy Awards.

So, without further ado, here are my selections for tonight’s winners, bolded in each category. I hope they help you win an Oscar pool or two. Enjoy the show!

Here's some inside intel for casual movie fans contemplating their Oscar predictions: By the time the Academy Awards roll around, we know who's going to win in pretty much every major category.
Sure, there can be surprises and the occasional too-close-to-call race, but after so many other award functions play out in the lead-up to Oscar night, from the Critics Choice to the Golden Globes to the all the guild gatherings, patterns emerge and some favorites appear unbeatable.
That's why if you're about to head to Vegas (Editor's note: NextMovie does not condone gambling, unless you're sharing …) and lay down some scratch on "The Artist" winning Best Picture, the rewards, at this point, won't be too tempting.
But if you're simply just looking to fill out your office Oscar ballot (get your printable one right here), then there are some categories you just shouldn't miss on.

hollywoodnews.com: And then there were nine.
That’s how many films will compete for the Best Picture Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards. “Winter’s Bone” Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Academy President Tom Sherak announced the nominees this morning, bringing to a close the lengthy first leg of the Oscar marathon (while simultaneously setting up Phase Two for the lucky nominees).
What made the cut? We have a full list of nominees below, but at first glance, Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” led the pack with 11 nominations. Albert Brooks seems like the most egregious snub. And Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is the Best Picture nom that’s making most people angry. (Except for me, because I loved it.)

The most exquisite fashion promo ever made. Only a demeaning statement if you consider fashion a frivolous construct of self-expression; Lars von Trier does not.
Kirsten Dunst plays Justine, a despondent soul who cannot face the enforced happiness of her bourgeois wedding day yet can passively accept the annihilation of earth due to its collision with the planet ‘Melancholia’. Obviously the destruction of all mankind is a situation beyond her control, so she all but welcomes it. As someone who spends every single day trying to think of a reason to live, Justine is thankful the decision has been taken out of her hands.

For Reader Appreciation Month, we're having mini interviews with readers. Here we have have Walter.
Nathaniel: Do you remember your first moviegoing experience or first obsession?
Walter: The first theater-going experience I remember is sitting in the movie theater with my aunt watching The Nightmare Before Christmas -- I was four years old and absolutely aghast at the final battle between Jack and Oogie Boogie and the end result. God, that was terrifying. And Awesome.
According to my father, though, the first time I ever sat up was to watch a movie on TV. Babies get distracted; he claims I stayed with the story until they turned it off. I wish he remembered what movie it was, because it was clearly the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Since breaking out among indie film fans with his committed and unforgettable performance in Steve McQueen's Hunger, Michael Fassbender has worked with a dream team of directors: Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Steven Soderbergh (the upcoming Haywire), David Cronenberg (the upcoming A Dangerous Method), Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank) and, yes, Matthew Vaughn (this little thing called X-Men: First Class). But for Jane Eyre, Fassbender teamed up with 33-year-old director Cary Fukunaga, whose single previous feature Sin Nombre was outstanding, but not exactly a career that speaks for itself like Cronenberg's or Tarantino's. Not only that, but Fassbender was tackling the role of the moody, imperious romantic hero Edward Fairfax Rochester, the enigmatic love interest played in the countless Jane Eyre adaptations by the likes of Orson Welles, George C. Scott and William Hurt. But together with co-star Mia Wasikowska as Jane, Fassbender and Fukunaga pulled off the unthinkable-- an adaptation...

Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

The L.A. Times reports Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman are circling Fox Searchlight's Stoker, a family mystery-drama that will mark the English-language debut of Oldboy director Chan-wook Park. The film centers on a girl (the previously attached Mia Wasikowska of The Kids Are All Right) and her mother (Kidman) who are visited by a mysterious uncle (Firth) after the girl's father dies. "Prison Break" actor Wentworth Miller penned the script, but otherwise this is a promising project if there ever was one. I just fear that Wasikowska, as much as I like her, is risking over-exposure with all the big roles she has lined up. She'll next be seen starring in Jane Eyre.
Variety brings the news that Abigail Breslin has joined Julianne Moore in the cast of director Hilary Brougher's gothic vampire film Innocence. Breslin will play a student at an elitist private school, where a number of the students are vampires.

French actor whose youthful role in Last Tango in Paris was to dominate her career
Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris (1972) revolves around the spontaneous sexual chemistry between a bitter middle-aged American widower and a naive French girl about to be married. They are drawn into an entirely physical relationship, some of it involving butter, after a chance meeting in an empty Paris apartment. They know nothing about each other, not even their names. The man was played by one of the most famous and admired actors in the world, Marlon Brando. The woman, Maria Schneider, was completely unknown. For better or worse, it was the role with which Schneider, who has died of cancer aged 58, would always be associated.
According to the critic Roger Ebert: "Maria Schneider doesn't seem to act her role so much as to exude it. On the basis of this movie, indeed, it's...

Maria Schneider, still best known for her emotionally and physically revealing role as Jeanne in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris, has died in Paris at the age of 58.She became an instant cinematic icon in 1972 when he starred alongside Marlon Brando as a young woman who becomes wrapped up in an intense affair with a grieving American widow. The film itself stirred both passion and controversy, becoming one of the most influential movies of its time. Though she and Brando remained friends after the difficult shoot, she didn’t harbour many happy memories of her time on set.And though Last Tango remains her most memorable role (“It's amazing," she told the Mail in 2007. "I've made 50 films in my career and Last Tango is 35 years old, but it's still the one that everyone asks me about”) she actually appeared in several films before playing Jeanne. Her other credits include 1975’s The Passenger,...

French actress Maria Schneider, who ultimately came to disdain her most famous role as Marlon Brando's young and sexy lover in Last Tango In Paris, has died this morning after a long illness. She was 58. According to news reports, French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand called Schneider "a great artist". The daughter of French actor Daniel Gelin and a Parisian bookshop owner, Schneider was only 19 when she was cast opposite the 48-year-old Brando in 1972's Last Tango In Paris which caused controversy for its full-body sexual content. Afterwards, the actress made no secret of her dislike for having been "manipulated" into making the movie and vowed not to appear in a nude scene ever again. Although Schneider appeared opposite Jack Nicholson in The Passenger in 1975, and in Jane Eyre in 1996, her subsequent acting career consisted mostly of low-budget European films.

French actress Maria Schneider has died at the age of 58. The movie star - best known for her role opposite Marlon Brando in 1972 movie 'Last Tango in Paris' - died in Paris today (03.02.11) after a long battle with cancer, her family has confirmed. Schneider was only 19 when she was cast in the film by director Bernardo Bertolucci. Her career then became synonymous with a graphic sex scene in the movie, which she later went on to say she did not enjoy. However, she remained friends with Brando, indicating he was the "best experience" about making the erotic drama, although they did not discuss the project for years after it was completed. During the 1970s she battled a drug addiction, but later in her life she went through a career rival, appearing in films including the 1996 version of 'Jane Eyre' and Mehdi Caref's 'In the Country of Juliets'.

Maria Schneider, best known as Marlon Brando's co-star in Last Tango in Paris, has died at the age of 58
Maria Schneider, the actor who helped introduce explicit sex to mainstream cinema, has died following a long illness. The 58-year-old is best known for her performance in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1972 drama Last Tango in Paris – a role that came to both define and destroy her acting career.
Schneider was a teenage model when she landed the role opposite Marlon Brando in Last Tango in Paris. The film details the relationship between a young Parisian woman and a middle-aged American hotel manager and was notorious for an improvised, butter-assisted sex scene that resulted in a prohibitive X-rating in the Us.
The film made Schneider a star, although she later accused Brando and Bertolucci of exploiting her. She described the director as "a gangster and a pimp", likened the experience to being...

Machine Gun Preacher
Opens: 2011
Cast: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker
Director: Marc Forster
Summary: After finding God, drug-dealing biker Sam Childers renounces his outlaw ways and embarks on a spiritual path, becoming a crusader for hundreds of desperate and helpless children who were being forced to become soldiers in war-torn southern Sudan.
Analysis: Despite taking the freshly rejuvenated James Bond franchise and nearly destroying it with the very disappointing "Quantum of Solace", German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster still has a decent amount of good will left thanks to strong earlier efforts like "Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland," "Stranger Than Fiction" and "The Kite Runner".
Now, in his first film since that Bond outing, Forster returns to serious drama with this true story tale of a biker who became a humanitarian crusader for children in the Sudan. The story itself is fascinating, the born again Sam Childers and...

What's the best way to go about previewing 2011? A most anticipated list? An Oscar hopeful list? A prediction of what films will most likely be atop the yearly box-office? What?
I created a massive list of films coming in 2011 with the intention of doing what I did last year when I previewed 50 films in two parts. Only this year I was wrestling with over 100 movies and then I was bumping up against the problem of whether I should work with just the films I am personally anticipating or preview the films most people will be talking about?
Personally I'm not anticipating films such as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger or Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but can you really write an article about the films of 2011 and not mention these movies? Therefore, I figured I'd just make a few categories and then open the doors for comments and your lists of most anticipated films.

These days everything is getting a reboot it seems, and Jane Eyre is no exception. The English classic written in 1847 by Charlotte Bronte, one third of the Bronte sister triad, has already been done, and redone, and done some more.
The most recent incarnation by Franco Zeffirelli starred a soulful and dark haired Anna Paquin who gave a brilliant performance as the young Jane Eyre in 1996. However, it seems in Hollywood there is a belief that the reboot is king and that every new generation, be it X, Y, Z or iGeneration needs a new interpretation. Basically, you know you are a classic when…

It was first announced back in November that young Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska would be starring as Jane Eyre in a new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's seminal novel. Up-and-coming filmmaker Cary Fukunaga, who broke out last year with Sin Nombre, is directing this adaptation of Jane Eyre and is shooting in Derbyshire, England as we speak (for Focus Features / BBC Films). Oddly, the Times Online (via Movieline) somehow scored the first photo of Wasikowska as Eyre in what looks like a screencap from a reel of dailies (if you don't know what that means, just ignore it). Anyway, you can see the first photo below. The reason this already looks a bit different than any of the Jane Eyre adaptations of past (including that Charlotte Gainsbourg/Anna Paquin version from 1996) is that Fukunaga is focusing "on the more gothic elements of the classic 19th century story." Hell yes,...

Could Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska be taking on another literary figure? According to Variety, the Aussie actress is tipped to star alongside Irish actor Michael Fassbender in a new adaptation of Jane Eyre. Charlotte Bronte’s 19th century tale has been remade countless times. So why not one more? Attached to the project is Sin Nombre helmer Cary Fukunga. There hasn’t been a big screen version since the mid 1990s when French minx Charlotte Gainsbourg starred alongside William Hurt. There is always an audience for this kind of material, and reinterpretations are nothing new in filmmaking. What will they be bringing to the table is anybody’s guess.
Michael Fassbender has been building an excellent body of work and was last seen as a British spy in Inglourious Basterds. It would take some serious effort to portray one of literature’s greatest bastards in Mr. Rochester, but...

Actress Mia Wasikowska will swap Tim Burton's fantasy land for the Victorian era for her next movie - she's in negotiations to star in a remake of period drama Jane Eyre.
The acting newcomer, who will soon grace cinema screens as Alice in Burton's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, is in talks to join 300 star Michael Fassbender in a new version of the Charlotte Bronte classic, reports Daily Variety.
The last movie adaptation of Jane Eyre was released in 1996, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt.

Following his success with Sin Nombre Cary Fukunaga is to adapt Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre from a script by Moira Buffini, and today rumours blossomed that soon-to-be Alice In Wonderland MiaWasikowska is in talks to play the eponymous heroine.
Jane Eyre has been adapted many times in recent years with actresses such as Samantha Morton and Charlotte Gainsbourg taking the lead role, now Focus Features and BBC films look to the relative newcomer to play the governess of Thornfield Manor.
Variety also report that my favourite Inglourious Basterd Michael Fassbender is considering the role of Mr Rochester. While literary adaptations, particularly those under the constraints of a feature film’s running time, rely on a tightly constructed abridging of the original work it is the actors breathing new life into well known characters that ensure a success or deliver a failure.

I was looking forward to seeing Ellen Page as Jane Eyre, wondering how she would handle the role of the poor governess from the wrong side of the moors. The star of Juno might have been able to bring a new twist to a character that has been filmed at least nineteen times. Or could be a thousand. IMDb isn't always accurate. My favorite Jane is Andrea Martin in the Second City TV "Jane Airhead". Her work in the role stands alone. As for serious Jane's the role has been played by Charlotte Gainsborough, Joan Fontaine, Samantha Morton. Anna Paquin played the young version of Jane to Morton's grown up Jane. My apologies to the multitude of Janes unnamed but that would go on for too many paragraphs. So many Jane Eyres, so little time. This is probably the most difficult Top 10 rankings I ever did - more difficult than the updated Top 10 for the actors. I have to find a balance wherein I give proper credit to certain actresses who have already established themselves and are already well-known by fans and ordinary moviegoers vis-a-vis those who have yet to boast of a growing list of followers, but has shown such unforgettable and powerful acting in some very impressive recently released films. At the end of the day, what really matters is that - at this moment - it was her name and her performances that moviegoers and critics alike are talking and raving about. - - -
