Jeremy Renner may have said goodbye to Mission: Impossible‘s world of espionage, but that doesn’t mean he would never return to the role of William Brandt.
The Hawkeye star entered the franchise in the 2011 installment, Ghost Protocol. At the end of 2015’s Rogue Nation, his character retired from his career in the Impossible Mission Force.
In an interview with Collider, Renner revealed there was one particular reason he left the franchise, despite reports at the time that he was being groomed to take over the lead role from Tom Cruise.
“I had to leave that,” the Mayor of Kingstown star told the publication. “I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad.

Top Gun fans waited over thirty years for Top Gun: Maverick, but the wait was well worth it. The film was an overwhelming success, earning rave reviews and grossing $1.4 billion worldwide. Considering those box-office bucks, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise expected to reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell alongside Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw (Miles Teller) and Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin (Glen Powell).
Although we likely won’t have to wait as long as we did for Maverick, those involved with the threequel aren’t about to rush the project. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave a Top Gun 3 update to Games Radar, saying that he’s had “preliminary” conversations with Tom Cruise, but “we’re not there yet. [There’s] ways to go.“

After months of on-again-off-again haggling, Skydance Media submitted a newly revised offer for Paramount Global. The revised bid would reduce the amount Skydance and its financial partners would pay Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholder, and reallocate that more equitably to the company’s nonvoting Class B shareholders, Variety has confirmed. Skydance would also put in more cash upfront to swing the deal, sources said.
The special committee established by Paramount’s board is currently reviewing Skydance’s revised proposal, sources said. Reps for Skydance and Paramount Global declined to comment. Reps for Nai and the Paramount board’s special committee did not respond to requests for comment. Skydance’s sweetened offer for Paramount was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The broad outlines remain the same on the offer from Skydance, headed by producer David Ellison, and financial backers RedBird Capital Partners and Kkr. Redstone would sell her stake in National Amusements Inc.

Could Jeremy Renner’s “Mission: Impossible” character William Brandt be back in action?

Jeremy Renner, who has made a remarkable comeback from near-fatal injuries, says he’s now ready for another impossible mission. Or make that Mission: Impossible.
Renner played agent William Brandt in the 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and the 2015 release Mission: Impossible -Rogue Nation.
But he then withdrew from the series. The reason, he says, is because of the birth of his daughter in 2013. After a brief marriage and divorce, Renner obtained split custody, which limited the amount of time he could devote to filming another Mission: Impossible, he said in an interview with Collider.
“I had to leave that,’ he said of the movie series. ‘I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom so much.”
He added, “We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London.

Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise’s iconic 1986 film, was a massive success following its release in 2022. Capturing the high-flying action of the original film, while also introducing a bunch of new characters, director Joseph Kosinski filled big shoes by taking over the project from Tony Scott.

No major film festival is complete without at least one Love Letter To Cinema™ from a filmmaker of some renown, to advocate the joys of the medium to an audience that doesn’t have to be told twice. French writer-director and Cannes regular Arnaud Desplechin brings that to the Croisette this year with “Filmlovers!,” a duly warm and nostalgia-washed cine-valentine, but one with a little more to say than just, “Movies, amirite?” Indeed, the film’s somewhat inelegant English-language title risks concealing the more specific focus of this unassuming but winning hybrid documentary: The French title, “Spectateurs!,” makes clear this is first and foremost a celebration of spectatorship rather than filmmaking, probing the dynamics of cinema audiences and their relationship to the screen. In either language, it’s impassioned enough to earn its exclamation point.

Top Gun: Maverick came more than three decades after the release of the first film starring Tom Cruise in the lead, and yet, it was as much of a resounding success as the original film from 1986. However, unlike a lot of stuff and people that were brought back from the first movie in this 2022 one, legendary filmmaker Tony Scott wasn’t one because of his devastating demise in 2012.

Since the younger Scott wasn’t there, Cruise reportedly decided to approach the older and equally legendary Scott brother, Ridley Scott, to helm the second movie in his Aviation film series. However, he was surprisingly not only met with a declined request by the iconic director, with the movie going to Joseph Kosinski instead, but was even met with his film being considered mediocre by Ridley!

Many of us thought that Jeremy Renner returning to movies and TV was an impossible mission itself. But now he is on a tear, returning for Mayor of Kingstown and showing genuine interest in reprising some of his franchise roles. The MCU’s Hawkeye would be one of the more obvious choices, but what about Brandt from Mission: Impossible? As Renner suggested, that is one he could absolutely return for.

If we were to only describe Tom Cruise with one single word, Daredevil would be the most apt choice. In his decades-long career spanning several action and thrilling flicks, there has hardly been a time when he has not put himself at risk. Whether it is a minor thing like hanging upside down to get his make-up done in Interview with the Vampire or jumping off a cliff multiple times to shoot one of the biggest stunts in cinema’s history, Cruise can do it all no matter how challenging or deadly it might be.

Even the best filmmakers in history take big, ambitious swings and completely miss the mark at times. In the case of Brian De Palma – the supremely talented New Hollywood director behind such all-time great classics as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, and more – many consider his most glaring cinematic blemish to be tone deaf adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities in 1990. However, if general moviegoers and De Palma fans knew about the crushing production woes relating to the ending of his uneven 1998 crime thriller Snake Eyes, perhaps they’d reassess their opinion.
Indeed, the original ending of Snake Eyes is so drastically different than what transpires at the end of the theatrical cut that it’s nearly impossible to judge the movie’s intentional merits versus the final product. Of course, the grand irony about the brutally botched ending of Snake Eyes is...

We were first introduced to William Brandt in 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Played by Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, it was widely reported when he was cast that the actor was being eyed to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise.
The Bourne Legacy's poor performance the following year is rumoured to have led to those plans being scrapped, as did Cruise deciding he wanted to stick around as Ethan Hunt after all.
Renner did, however, return for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, only to have disappeared by the time Fallout rolled around (it was briefly mentioned that the character "retired").

The production of Mission: Impossible 8 has hit a fresh problem thanks to an issue with a submarine. More here.
Given the horrendous amount of problems we’ve seen films suffer over the last few years, is the next Mission: Impossible film the most delayed production of all?
Fresh reports today (via World Of Reel) state that the production has been hit with another weeks-long delay as a $25m submarine crucial to the film’s plot is currently unusable. That’s reportedly because the mechanism that lowers it into the water has jammed under the considerable weight of the craft itself.
While it’s a suitably oversized problem for such an oversized film, it’s really no laughing matter. Production has now been pushed back by several weeks. This of course follows the major delay caused by last year’s strikes, not to mention several pushed dates for the release of the film already.

With new chapters in the worlds of Mad Max and Planet of the Apes out now, Guardian writers have picked their favourite big screen franchises to date
When a blockbuster franchise is seven movies in (and counting), and the consensus choice for worst entry was directed by John Woo, arguably the most influential action film-maker of his time, you’re looking at an uncommonly consistent series. Though the Mission: Impossible movies have cycled through many directors – one apiece for Brian De Palma, Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird, before settling on Christopher McQuarrie – the first film, particularly the astounding Langley break-in sequence, established the franchise as a showcase for impeccable crafted set pieces. The plots may be an enjoyably hokey tangle of global threats and clever unmaskings, but the series’ determination to keep topping itself, leaning on the physicality of stunt work and practical effects, has provided reliable thrills for approaching three decades.

Hannah Waddingham has made quite a name for herself since playing Septa Unella, aka the Shame Nun, in the fifth season of Game of Thrones. Despite having little dialogue, the actress made her acting prowess known by commanding the screen, and later went on to secure two Emmy wins for her performance as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso.
Moreover, her success hasn’t been limited to the small screen, as Waddingham recently appeared in The Fall Guy, and is now looking forward to making her Mission: Impossible debut. But despite being in top demand in Hollywood in recent years, her introduction to showbiz wasn’t pretty, as the actress recalled being shunned by many before making it big.

Since accompanying Tom Cruise in his aviation ventures in Top Gun: Maverick, the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career, Glen Powell has garnered wider recognition following his acting prowess. Moreover, the actor once again made headlines after jumping onto the rom-com landscape with Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You, the kind of film that is a rarity these days.
But after the rom-com, the actor is back to what he loves doing the most, aviation, and he has the Mission: Impossible star’s influence to thank for it.

Over the last three decades, Keanu Reeves has cemented himself as one of the leading men in Hollywood when it comes to action. From making The Matrix with The Wachowskis to performing most of his stunts in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick films, Reeves has deservedly earned himself the status of one of the best action stars of our time.
But while it was Point Break and Sandra Bullock’s Speed that gave him the boost in the action landscape, these films weren’t Reeves’ first introduction to the genre.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

The Hollywood Blacklist ruined dozens of lives. United States-based artists who were sympathetic to, or even curious about, communism were demonized as traitors to their country and, due to hysterical pressure from The House Committee on Un-American Activities (aka Huac), banned from working in the industry. Disgraced and unemployed, blacklisted individuals were forced to leave the country if they wanted to continue working or, if they could not afford to relocate, find a line of work where being an alleged communist wasn't frowned upon. This latter option was, of course, dismally unlikely. The mental and financial burden of being completely shunned from one's industry was so unbearable that it led actor Philip Loeb to die by suicide.
This put Hollywood at war against itself. Anyone suspected of having communist ties was pressured to come clean and, if they wanted to continue working, name names (a cowardly practice savaged by films...

Grindstone Entertainment Group has bought North American rights to Uppercut, a boxing thriller starring Ving Rhames, for Hello Moment Productions.
World sales are being handled by Sublimity Entertainment, which will be presenting the film to international distributors at the Cannes marketplace.
Set in New York City, Uppercut begins in 2014 as Toni (Luiii), a determined fighter, seeks out Elliott (Ving Rhames), a former boxer turned gym owner in gritty Bushwick. Though Elliott first dismisses the idea of training her, an unexpected bond blossoms between them, breaking through the boundaries of boxing and exploring the complexities of respect, love, family, and personal convictions. It culminates in a final showdown that alters Toni’s destiny profoundly.
Years later, Toni, now a pioneering female boxing manager, guides Payne (Jordan E. Cooper) to his first championship fight, drawing upon Elliott’s wisdom. On this very night, Toni might not only lose a fight, but also herself,...

For over a decade, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were the dream Hollywood couple. The actors who had a fairytale romance on the sets of their film Days of Thunder, tied the knot in 1990 and seemed to have the perfect life until their shocking divorce in 2001. Kidman subsequently went on to marry musician Keith Urban in 2006.

The star plays an analyst forced to see AI’s benefits in a brash sci-fi adventure that plays like it was made two decades ago
Memorial Day weekend has long been a vital, lucrative calendar date in Hollywood, a three-day stretch that’s birthed blockbusters such as Mission: Impossible, The Lost World and Top Gun: Maverick. As George Miller’s bombastic Mad Max prequel Furiosa urges those to the big screen, Netflix has something for the majority staying home – the sci-fi adventure Atlas, and it’s the kind of big, dumb, irony-free schlock that would have premiered theatrically on this very date two decades prior. And perhaps that’s the best way to view it, as knowing nostalgia bait, designed to appeal to those who prefer to look back rather than forward, an exercise in early ’00s immersion.

Garfield — the lasagne-loving, Monday-hating, greedy, grumpy cat originating in Jim Davis’ long-running comic strip — is an awkward fit for a kids’ film. He’s a cynic forced to be a family-friendly goofball, a sarcastic hero being sold to an audience of under-tens with an undeveloped sense of sarcasm, a square pessimist peg in a round optimistic hole. It has been tried unsuccessfully before, in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie and its sequel — those films most notable for the fact that Bill Murray signed on to voice Garfield because he mistakenly (he claimed) thought one of the Coen brothers was behind it.
This latest attempt details how Garfield first met his human ‘pet’, Jon (Nicholas Hoult), and became estranged from his father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), before the stubborn housecat finds himself on a madcap heist adventure. Whether or not you think this is an origin story that needs to be told...

No one could blame the box office for needing an imaginary friend right now. For the first time in more than a decade — excluding the worst period of the Covid-19 crisis — no movie opening during the first six months of the year has come close to hitting the $100 million mark in its domestic launch.
In 2023, for example, three films had accomplished this feat by the time Memorial Day rolled around, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which debuted to $146.3 million in April on its way to earning $1.36 billion worldwide. To date, the top opening of the year belongs to March tentpole Dune: Part Two, which started off with $82.5 million, followed by $80 million for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In fact, it’s nearing the one-year anniversary of the last film to open to $100 million or more — Barbie, which sunnily smiled its way to a $162 million debut in the latter half of July.

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

The highest-paid actors in Hollywood — Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Keanu Reeves, and others — could easily command millions of dollars in upfront salary. For Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. earned a $20 million upfront salary and a $75 million total income. The precedent for these humongous salaries was Elizabeth Taylor’s upfront salary of $1 million for Cleopatra.
