Albert Brooks: Defending My Life pays tribute to a pioneer whose irreverent humor has spanned late night TV, comedy albums, features, animated voice work and a novel. But what makes the film sing is the extended rap session between Brooks and his dear friend Rob Reiner, who directed the HBO documentary. The Hollywood legends met as teenagers at Beverly Hills High School, and Reiner structures the film around a lunch in which they swap anecdotes and punchlines about Brooks’ influential career. It’s an energizing way to frame what might otherwise be just another gushy celebrity profile.
Onscreen, Brooks tells stories about the early days of Saturday Night Live and Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, his friendships with Carrie Fisher and Stanley Kubrick, the seven movies he’s written and directed and the marriage that made him a new father in his 50s. Many of today’s wry humorists owe a debt to Brooks,...

Reports that Max was highly likely to raise its subscription costs first began to circulate in early May.
Max is just days away from the release of its second season of “House of the Dragon,” which is expected to drive huge numbers for the streaming service. Given that fact, and how opportunistic Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has proven to be, it’s hardly surprising that Max appears poised to roll out a price increase this month. Some customers have already received notice that their subscription rate is going up, and it’s essentially guaranteed that more Max subscribers will get news about their costs rising before the week is out.
Key Details: Viewers who receive their Max subscription through Verizon have been notified their price is increasing starting on their next bill. The increase affects Max’s ad-free plan and will see the cost rise by $1 per month...

“Seinfeld” fans got a shock last month when Michael Richards made a public appearance at the Hollywood premiere for Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix movie “Unfrosted.” It was one of the rare times Richards has showed up on a major red carpet in nearly 18 years, as his career more or less ended in 2006 after he was recorded hurling the N-word and other racial insults at a group of hecklers during an infamous outburst while onstage at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.
Richards, who played Kramer on “Seinfeld” for nearly a decade and won three Emmys for his performance, is now returning to the spotlight due to the upcoming release of his memoir, “Entrances and Exits.” He recently told People magazine that “I’m not looking for a comeback” and stressed that he was “immediately sorry the moment” he said racial slurs onstage in November 2006.

With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

As comedy has shifted the bounds of acceptable content, some shows continue to push the line between problematic and funny. Unlike some comedians insist, good comedy series like It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia push the boundary of what is allowed on television. Hapless, a new series streaming on Peacock, looks to bring the same energy from a crew of British comedians. It approaches its comedy with traditional sitcom approaches, but unlike many shows, it lets the humor spiral out of control. Most importantly, it gives its stars the material to milk the most laughs possible out of the punchlines. The show is very funny, even if it occasionally feels too similar to the Curb Your Enthusiasm or The League.
Hapless Plot
Hapless follows Paul Green (Tim Downie), a British journalist completing stories for The Jewish Enquirer. As Paul investigates various stories, he comes into contact with different aspects of Jewish and secular British culture.

From the truly iconic Curb Your Enthusiasm to Veep, HBO has always had a taste for a good comedy, but still fails to get the right image of a channel in the eyes of the audience. In people's minds, as the home of The Sopranos, Succession, Game of Thrones and Euphoria, HBO will forever remain a dark channel with nothing to laugh about.
Granted, the comedies that HBO produces are also full of sarcasm and dark humor, but they're still just as entertaining and hilarious as CBS's family-friendly sitcoms. Hopefully, with this new project that combines some legendary names in the sitcom field, the network will attract even more people looking for a good laugh.

Larry David’s beloved comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is gearing up for a grand showing at the Primetime Emmys. The 12th and final season of the HBO/Max series has submitted for 35 nominations, including the top prize for outstanding comedy series.

He hopes to unseat last year’s winner and current frontrunner, Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear.” Though David is a two-time Emmy winner for writing and creating “Seinfeld,” he has yet to win as an actor despite six nominations, the last of which came in 2008.
Supporting actors J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, two-time former nominee Cheryl Hines and Tracey Ullman will also compete in the main acting categories, as well as a posthumous submission for Richard Lewis, who died in February.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Sienna Miller and Ben Affleck starred together in the 2016 film, Live By Night, which the actor himself helmed. He was riding high on the success of his Oscar-winning film Argo, but this next film proved to be a complete disaster. It took years for Affleck to take on another project as a director. Steve Carell is headed to HBO.
The former star of The Office will lead the cast of an untitled single-camera comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses (Scrubs). HBO has handed out a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes for the series, which had been the focus of a multiple-platform bidding war.
The comedy is set on a college campus and centers on an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter. Lawrence and Tarses, who previously collaborated on Scrubs and who are currently working on the Apple series Bad Monkey, will write the first episode.
“HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV. Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me. Nothing can go wrong now,” Lawrence said.
The series hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence recently renewed his overall deal. Lawrence, Tarses and Carell will exec produce the comedy.

Also known for his work in Sucker Punch & Top Gun: Maverick, the actor, 53, has acted in both highly regarded film and TV roles during his career.
But did you know, nestled within his portfolio of work, there lies a film that has almost slipped through the cracks of cinematic memory?
John Hamm in Stolen | 2 Bridges Productions
In 2009, he took on the role in Stolen, a frequently overlooked chapter of Hamm’s life that true cinephiles may recall. Though the actor’s renowned charm and depth could elevate any role, this murder mystery remarkably stood as an endeavor that slipped past audiences and critics alike.

Stax Records was founded in 1957 by a brother and sister duo focused on bringing local talent to the ears of their customers. Though Julia-Louis Dreyfus didn’t make an appearance in the final Curb Your Enthusiasm episode that called back to the Seinfeld series finale, she’s a fan of how Larry David wrapped up his follow-up series.
“I loved it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter of last month’s Curb ending. “I loved everything about it.”
Curb‘s 12th and final season finished with a cameo from Jerry Seinfeld in which he and star-creator David, both playing fictional versions of themselves, reference the famously divisive Seinfeld end. After Larry is convicted of violating Georgia’s Election Integrity Act, he’s sentenced to a year in prison. But Jerry intervenes.
He discovers that one of the trial’s jurors broke the sequestering rule, causing a mistrial to be declared and Larry to walk free.
“Larry,” Jerry says, “is a free man!”
He adds, winking to the poor reception to the Seinfeld finale:...

A man accused of randomly punching film and TV star Steve Buscemi has been arrested and charged, according to the New York Police.
NYPD identified the suspect as 50-year-old homeless man Clifton Williams. He is charged with second-degree assault. The crime is a class D felony and carries a possible sentence of seven years in prison. Assault in the second degree is also classified as a violent felony, and a judge is required to impose a minimum sentence of two years in prison.
The 66-year-old Buscemi was punched last week as he walked in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan. The Boardwalk Empire and Sopranos star sustained a black eye and bleeding in the May 8 ambush, police said.
Law enforcement sources said Williams changed his appearance and fled Manhattan as Buscemi was treated at a hospital.
Buscemi was the latest celebrity to suffer a random attack on New York City streets.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

“Baby Reindeer” has quickly become a cultural juggernaut, with viewers swarming to watch this Netflix limited series written and created by Richard Gadd, who also stars. He adapted his Olivier Award-winning play about his years as a struggling comedian when he was stalked and harassed by a woman, played the fabulous Jessica Gunning. The show also depicts his abuse at the hands of an older man who first acted as a mentor. The series is a tough watch at times but always a gripping one. It’s searing television and, as a result, “Baby Reindeer” is one of the most acclaimed shows of the year.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) declared: “Shocking, hilarious, painful, and devastating, ‘Baby Reindeer’ is a rare gem on television, reminding us of what is possible in the medium.”

Update: The NYPD has identified a suspect in last week’s seemingly random attack on actor Steve Buscemi. Police say the man pictured in surveillance images is 50-year-old Clifton Williams.
Police have not located Williams and no arrests have been made. The search is ongoing.
Additional information on the suspect was not released.
Previous, May 12: New York native Steve Buscemi has become the latest celebrity to suffer a random attack on New York City streets.
Buscemi, 66, was reported by the New York Post to have been walking in the Kips Bay neighborhood on Manhattan’s East side last week when a man walked up and struck him.
The broad-daylight attack is just one of the celebrity incidents that have happened over the last few years. Comic actor Rick Moranis, Michael Stuhlbarg (who was in the show Boardwalk Empire with Buscemi), and reality star Bethenny Frankel are among those similarly victimized.

The television industry’s annual “upfront” is usually a place where advertisers get to preview new series and specials, not blockbuster movies, so NBC raised eyebrows Monday when one of the first previews it showed to an audience at Radio City Music Hall was of the coming Universal film “Wicked.”
NBCUniversal, chief content officer Donna Langley told the crowd, was “excited to build up our story legacy across film, TV and streaming.”
Movies and premium cable series from HBO and Showtime used to be something traditional TV advertisers got their hands on only after they had made their way through theaters and pay-tv windows. Now, as a batch of this year’s upfront showcases reveal, they are increasingly being dangled before Madison Avenue as a major reason to support TV companies.
Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to make a similar point at its upfront Wednesday morning, when executives talk to...

Prime Video continues to expand its game show output, announcing two more new shows on Tuesday at Amazon’s upfronts presentation: “Buy It Now,” hosted by Jb Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and the holiday-themed event “Wish List Games” hosted by Nick Cannon (“The Masked Singer”). Amazon is stacking up its unscripted orders.
The streaming service has ordered two new nonscripted series; it has ordered a U.S. version of British format Buy It Now hosted by Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jb Smoove and Nick Cannon is hosting holiday event Wish List Games.
Elsewhere, it has added names to Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, hosted by Travis Kelce.
This comes after the streamer ordered Pop Culture Jeopardy!, a spinoff of the iconic gameshow.
Amazon has largely struggled in the unscripted world and has had few breakouts so is evidently trying to bolster its slate.
Buy It Now comes from The Traitors producer Studio Lambert and is based on a Channel 4 daytime format that seasoned and budding entrepreneurs try to win a place in the Buy It Now store featured on both Amazon.com and within the Prime app.

A study from Comcast shows how viewers are finding new television content in the age of peak choice.
Times have changed since the days when TVs had actual channel dials. If you wanted something to watch, you flipped on your set and switched between the five or six channels your rabbit-ears antenna picked up, then settled on a title or turned it off. Now, viewers have thousands of programming choices between TV channels and on-demand streaming services, and a new survey from Comcast has details regarding just how difficult those choices have become.
Key Details: Comcast found that more than 60% of American audiences search for six minutes or more for a new show or movie. Seeing a promotional ad for a program increases its tune-in rate by 228%. Over 50% of Americans say they’ve watched a show or movie after finding it on their smart TV home screen.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it had reached 99.6 million paid streaming subscribers in a tough quarter for studios and networks.
That’s a growth of nearly 2 million subscribers from the 97.7 million subs across HBO and streamers Max and Discovery+ that Warner Bros. Discovery reported for the end of 2023.
On Wednesday, Wbd and Disney announced a deal to launch a streaming bundle with Max, Disney+ and Hulu this summer. Pricing wasn’t disclosed.
Wbd’s overall net loss for the first quarter of 2024 was $966 million. Free cash flow stood at $390 million. The company paid $515 million in net interest expense in Q1.
Streaming revenue was flat compared with the year-earlier period, at $2.5 billion. Streaming ad sales rose 70% to $175 million vs. $103 million for Q1 2023. While Joe Biden and Donald Trump have kept their in-person campaigning to a minimum so far this election cycle, third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has done everything he can do steal the spotlight, holding event after event with celebrity supporters. Now he can add another to the roster: actor Kevin Spacey.
Spacey, who faced more than a dozen accusations of sexual misconduct or assault since the #MeToo movement gripped the culture in 2017, appeared to indicate in a tweet on Monday that Kennedy had been there for him at his lowest.
