Netflix is known for its continuous mission to bring old comedy movies back to life on its platform, but this time the streaming giant is going bigger. It’s just been confirmed that Netflix will helm a sequel for Adam Sandler’s 1996 beloved comedy Happy Gilmore with Sandler reprising his iconic role.
No other cast details have been given so far, but the movie is said to be already in the works.
What Will the Happy Gilmore Sequel Be About?
Endless rumors about Happy Gilmore’s potential sequel have been in the air for a while, with Sandler himself and his friend and ex-co-star Drew Barrymore teasing that the 1990s comedy is likely to get a second installment.
Now that the movie is officially in development, nothing about its storyline has been confirmed, though, given Sandler’s comeback to the leading role, the chances are that the sequel will still follow the same character,...

A Happy Gilmore sequel has been greenlit at Netflix, with Adam Sandler returning to star. More details here.
Back in March, there were reports that a sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore had been written, and actor Christopher McDonald had read it. Given the popularity of the film, it seemed to be a question not of if, but when.
We now have the answer, as the sequel has officially been greenlit by Netflix.
The original film, directed by regular collaborator Denis Dugan and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, followed Sandler as the titular character, an aspiring ice hockey player who enters a high-profile golfing tournament to earn money to buy his grandmother’s house.
Though his angry outbursts and profane patter initially cause outrage, his skill and tenacity eventually win through in the end. Featuring memorable supporting turns from the much missed Carl Weathers, the imposing...

Netflix is getting ready to kick off the first-quarter 2024 earnings season for Hollywood on April 18, and the momentum of its subscriber growth, advertising tier and password-sharing crackdown will be among the focus areas for investors and Wall Street analysts.
Investors will also keep an ear out for possible commentary on content strategy, including a film division reorganization under new head Dan Lin. Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that the features division will now be split up by genre — such as sci-fi, rom-com and faith-based. Among Netflix’s first-quarter originals were such series as 3 Body Problem and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and such films as Damsel and Spaceman.
The company’s stock has been on the upswing so far in 2024, gaining 30 percent year-to-date through Monday to close at $607.15, compared to a 6.7 percent gain in the broad-based S&P 500 stock index. However, several analysts have boosted their stock price targets...

Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

John Carter and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton is working on a fascinating new sci-fi film. If In The Blink Of An Eye sticks to the script, we could be in for something special.
His career stretching back to the late 1980s, Andrew Stanton is best known for his animated work at Pixar, whether it’s as writer (1995’s ground-breaking Toy Story) or writer-director.
As a live-action filmmaker, he’s probably almost as well known for 2012’s John Carter, a hugely expensive sci-fi adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess Of Mars. One of those films that seemed to have vultures circling it before it was even released, John Carter was ultimately a box office misfire.
In the wake of it, Stanton kept himself busy with animated projects at Disney and Pixar, but has also found time to write or direct the odd TV episode, including instalments of Stranger Things,...

Chernobyl director Johan Renck and production partner Michael Parets will adapt Andrew O’Hagan’s new epic British novel Caledonian Road for TV.
Recently published by Faber to rave reviews, Caledonian Road is a Dickensian tale of the rise and fall of Campbell Flynn, an art historian and celebrity intellectual, told against the backdrop of modern-day Britain and the deep-set corruption at the heart of the ruling class. O’Hagan is a three-time Booker Prize nominee (for Our Fathers, Be Near Me and The Illuminations). His last novel, Mayflies, was adapted as a drama series by BBC in 2022 starring Martin Compston, Tony Curran and Ashley Jensen.

Update: It looks like Christopher McDonald was right about Adam Sandler working on the script for Happy Gilmore. Sandler’s fave co-star and longtime pal Drew Barrymore confirmed, in a clip from today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, that the sequel is indeed happening. “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” says Barrymore, adding later, “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”
Barrymore famously starred with Sandler in three movies, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended. The two have remained close over the years, with Sandman frequently turning up on her show. While he’s mostly focused on drama recently, including the recent Netflix film Spaceman, Happy Gilmore 2 would likely be warmly received by fans, especially if co-stars Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen return.

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen opened with a bang on Netflix.
The series, a spinoff of Ritchie’s 2019 film, delivered almost 1.21 billion minutes of viewing over its first four days (it premiered March 7), according to Nielsen’s streaming rankings for March 4-10. It ranked second among all streaming series for the week, behind Love Is Blind (1.5 billion minutes), which repeated as the top overall title.
Netflix also got a big first week for Millie Bobby Brown’s movie Damsel, which edged The Gentlemen for second place overall: Damsel had 1.209 billion minutes of viewing to 1.205 billion for The Gentlemen. Two other shows also topped the billion-minute mark — Bluey (1.1 billion on Disney+) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.04 billion on Netflix and Peacock).
After a huge opening and a strong second week, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender fell by about 51 percent to 950 million minutes, still good for sixth place overall and third among original series.

Dn last spoke with Colby Day when we premiered his one-shot short Lead/Follow back in early 2023. Day’s movement-led film caught our eye with its brisk yet all-encompassing depiction of the different stages of a romantic relationship. It’s a really special film and it left us eagerly anticipating what Day would make next. Then earlier this year it was announced that Day’s next project, this time as a screenwriter, would be playing Berlinale before premiering on Netflix shortly after. The project in question was Spaceman, an Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan-starring science fiction drama directed by Johan Renck about an astronaut deep in the throes of space where he encounters a strange alien spider (voiced by Paul Dano) who helps him reflect on his failings as a husband. Similarly to Lead/Follow, Spaceman is an impressively expansive film that at its heart is about the trials...

While one can argue that Netflix’s rise has been detrimental to cinema as a whole, the actor who has greatly benefited from shifting to the streaming giant is Adam Sandler. Since his breakthrough back in the ’90s thanks to his stint in SNL, Sandler has gone on to become one of the biggest comedic icons of this generation but has had a rough time among critics.
Even though Sandler is not new to critically acclaimed features, especially his works in recent years, for the majority of his career, the Happy Gilmore Star’s releases have struggled to earn critics’ approval. But despite having a rough going critically, the execs at Netflix were assured bringing him in would greatly benefit the platform, and they couldn’t have been more right.

When the name of Adam Sandler is associated with a film project in the industry, the first thing that comes to the audiences’ mind is the genre of it being another comedy from the star, and rightfully so. For almost two decades, the star has constantly provided Hollywood with some of the most hilarious and comical films in history,
But unfortunately, the star has also given the world some of the most throwaway pieces of cinema in the process.

With Godzilla and Kong preparing for a titan-sized team-up in this weekend’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, now seems like as good a time as any to revisit the first time these larger than life monsters crossed paths: 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla. The third film in both franchises and the first in both franchises to be presented in widescreen and color, this entry was a major turning point for the Godzilla seres in particular and is often credited with keeping the series alive after the disappointing Godzilla Raids Again.
Yet despite its massive influence, the film is also strangely difficult to come by in the West. Universal released a bare-bones Blu-ray of the English dub in 2014 and the Japanese version is included in The Criterion Collection’s “Godzilla: The Showa Era” box set; but both versions are strangely absent from that set’s digital release; on top...

Fellow '90s kids, this one's for us. Take one of our greatest comedic stars at the height of his powers, add a little golf (by way of hockey), and sprinkle in one unforgettable cameo by the legendary Bob Barker, and you get a beloved comedy classic in "Happy Gilmore." It may have taken the better part of 30 years, but all signs are pointing to a long-overdue sequel after years and years of rumors over whether "Happy Gilmore 2" would ever actually happen.
The potentially headline-grabbing news, reported with a healthy dose of caveats, comes courtesy of Deadline ... and from a somewhat unlikely source. Adam Sandler may be revisiting one of his most beloved comedies almost 30 years later.
The “Spaceman” and “Uncut Gems” star is said to have developed a script for “Happy Gilmore 2,” a sequel to his iconic 1996 film. Original actor Christopher McDonald said during Audacy radio show “92.3 The Fan” that he saw a draft of the script.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.'”
McDonald aded, “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown is driving a sword through Netflix’s English Films List this week with her fantasy action flick Damsel, slaying the number one spot for the second week in a row! The Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed action-adventure film added 50.8M views to its coffers and was the most-watched title of the week. Damsel’s viewing total stands tall at 86.1M views in ten days, hitting the coveted #1 spot in 87 countries and reaching the Top 10 in 93.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan’s romantic comedy Irish Wish pranced into the #2 slot, with 30.6M views in its first three days of release. The action-thriller Code 8: Part II nabbed the #4 spot (3.6M views), while Johan Renck’s Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, floated into the #9 spot with 3.1M views. Spaceman’s performance is shocking, as Sandler typically owns the Netflix Top 10 whenever he drops a new film onto the streamer.

Millie Bobby Brown is once again reigning over Netflix with her latest project.
Her new film Damsel recorded 35.3M views in just three days of availability, easily boosting it to the top of the English film charts (and taking the crown as the most-watched title of the week) from March 4 to March 10.
The film, also starring Robin Wright and Angela Bassett, is No. 1 in 79 countries, according to Netflix. It had more than three times the viewership of the No. 2 movie, Code 8: Part II — which was at the top of the list last week.
Also among the Top 10 films were Spaceman, which held firm at No. 3 with 10.8M views, and Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, which ranked No. 5 with 5.1M views.
Over on the TV side of things, The Gentlemen took first place with 12.2M views. Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was recently renewed for two more seasons, stole second place with 9.1M views.

Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen” debuted at number one on the weekly Netflix Top 10 English language TV charts for the week of March 4-10.
The crime thriller series pulled in an estimated 12.2 million views with just three days of availability, as it launched on the streamer on March 7. That was enough to put it ahead of the previous number one series from last week, the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” That series fell to the number two spot in its third week on the chart with 9.1 million views, a staggering dropoff of 54% from its prior week performance of 19.9 million. The show was recently renewed for two more seasons.
The romantic limited series “One Day” remained in the Top 10 for its fifth week, taking the number six spot with 3.1 million views. “Love Is Blind” Season 6 also remained popular with viewers, nabbing the number five spot with 3.4 million viewers in...

After a weekend with the Oscars sharing the spotlight with the best one-two punch at the box office since July, the VOD and Netflix current home viewing charts lag in importance. “Argylle” (Universal) had a good launch on PVOD and “Damsel,” the kind of far-removed from awards thoughts Netflix original film, clicked with users immediately. Both bits of news are so below the radar that they have little relevance to how things stand in the industry.
“Argylle” — which Apple reportedly acquired for $200 million from “Kingsman” creator Matthew Vaughn and then released theatrically through Universal (with a gross of under $45 million) — came out on PVOD (for $19.99 rental) two weeks earlier than Apple’s earlier “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” And significantly, in doing so, delayed when their streaming subscribers gain access to it.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several music videos by director Johan Renck. Johan Renck's new film Spaceman, is only his second feature, after the minor indie release Downloading Nancy, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a storied career. In fact, he has worn many hats, and his career seems only now to have reached the stellar proportions where something Renck-directed has automatic buzz. That is mostly due to a one-two-punch in recent years. After directing some big Breaking Bad episodes he hit it big by directing the entirety of HBO's hit series Chernobyl. Just a few years before that though, he made two music videos that...

Spaceman left things on a cryptic note, and the director of Netflix's sci-fi film has since attempted to clear things up for any confused viewers.
The psychological space drama follows Adam Sandler's astronaut, Jakub, on an eight-month mission to collect a sample of the mysterious Chopra cloud. Six months into the solo voyage Jakub is joined by an alien spider interloper - dubbed Hanuš - who helps him to reconcile his traumatic past, which has been holding him back from his relationship with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan).
The final act of the movie sees Jakub and Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) enter the Chopra cloud where they experience an ethereal vision of time and space. Jakub then seemingly comes to terms with his past problems and is rescued by a passing South Korean spacecraft, while Hanuš perishes in the cloud.

Avatar: The Last Airbender strikes again.
The live-action Netflix series was once again on top of the TV list from February 26 to March 3 with 19.9M views in its first full week on the platform. That’s slightly down from last week, but still by far the most-watched series on the platform during this interval.
Avatar still has a bit of a long way to go before it would break into Netflix’s most popular TV list. So far, it’s racked up about 40M of the 83M views it would need to surpass The Witcher Season 1, which is currently sitting in 10th place. There is plenty of time to make that happen, though, since the series has a hefty 91-day premiere window to do so.

Scott Kelly, the astronaut who until very recently held the American record for longest spaceflight, spent at least some of his time aboard the Iss thinking about “Breaking Bad.” NASA will set up calls for the astronauts in orbit with interesting people they want to talk to; so, unlike all “Breaking Bad” fans stuck on Earth, Kelly was able to talk with Vince Gilligan and Brian Cranston — and, as it turns out, director/producer Michelle MacLaren, who was in the room and would remember Kelly when she set out to direct the first two episodes of Apple TV+’s “Constellation.”
Brought on as an advisor to the Noomi Rapace thriller, Kelly sat in Zoom meetings with the “Constellation” production team and also traveled to set to help keep even the zero-gravity scenes grounded in reality. He still has his Soyuz re-entry manual, from which he gave input to the crew...

Over the last few years, Adam Sandler seems to be setting out to prove himself as a dramatic talent. Although he has always dipped his toe into darker waters from time time, he has really ramped up his desire to diversify in recent years. In 2024, the Netflix original movie Spaceman was yet another stride forward for Sandler in the world of drama. What makes Spaceman even more exciting is the fact that it is a career first for Sandler, marking his first sci-fi movie. Right out of the gate, the movie was not met with many warm reviews. Sure, it’s got its charm, but let’s not pretend it’s the zenith of Netflix’s sci-fi offerings. Buckle up, space cadets, because we’re about to launch into a cosmos where Stranger Things and company make Spaceman look like a B-side track on an old cassette tape. Captain America is coming to Marvel’s defense as actor Chris Evans is weighing in on the superhero movie fatigue debate and noting that comic book films deserve much more credit.
During an appearance at the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle this past weekend, Evans said movies based on comic books “don’t always get the credit they deserve.”
“They are these big, giant movies,” Evans said during the panel. “There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones.”
The actor continued, “I’m not throwing shade! I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough. More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier. I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalog,...

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. Barry Egan is not a particularly easygoing guy. The protagonist of Paul Thomas Anderson's 2002 film "Punch-Drunk Love" is socially awkward, highly anxious, and clearly has trouble regulating his emotions in a healthy way. When he calls a phone sex line, it's because he's lonely and just wants to connect with another person. But as played by Adam Sandler, who was exclusively known for his comedic work until then, Barry becomes someone the audience roots for. Since we have a history with Sandler as someone who has made us laugh, we're perhaps more endeared to this eccentric character than we might've been otherwise.
Anderson knew this -- he was dead set on casting Sandler in "Punch-Drunk Love" from the moment he came up with the concept -- and saw potential in Sandler that no other director had seen at that point. By hiring him to star in this small, bizarre romance,...

People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.

Johan Rench, perhaps best known for directing the groundbreaking HBO series Chernobyl, leaves behind the world of historical reality in exchange for one of futuristic endeavors. Spaceman, which stars Adam Sandler in a role unlike anything he’s attempted before, uses the science-fiction genre to explore the heart-wrenching affects of loss and regret in the realms of love. It’s reminiscent of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in that regard, as well as for casting a traditionally comedic actor in the lead. Spaceman is the latest Netflix sci-fi film fronted by Adam Sandler and it is not afraid to explore some weird and unexpected territory that leaves its meaning in question.
The film is based on Jaroslav Kalfař's novel Spaceman in Bohemia, which charts the story of fictional astronaut Jakub Procházka (Sandler) and his eight-month-long solo journey to investigate the mysterious Chopra space cloud above Earth.
Along the way, Jakub encounters the telepathic alien spider Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) who helps him to face his Earthly struggles. But not everything in Spaceman is straightforward and its ending is particularly ambiguous.
