To celebrate Thursday’s season 20 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, Chris Carmack (Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln) provided a remake of I’m Just Ken, the Oscar-nominated song from Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie blockbuster.
Joining him were co-stars Natalie Morales, Camilla Luddington, James Pickens Jr., Anthony Hill, Harry Shum Jr., and Kevin McKidd.
Pink hospital scrubs substituted for Ken’s faux fur coat, sunglasses, and a rainbow-colored cowboy hat as Carmack lip-synched Ryan Gosling’s vocals.
The series was recently renewed by ABC for a 21st season last month. Watch the performance above.

Martin Scorsese is one of the few industry vets who has been around for several decades hitting the audience with brilliant movies and sweeping all the prestigious awards, so his praise is nothing but a real golden ticket to overall success in Hollywood.
Though the proclaimed filmmaker is mostly known for his numerous collaborations with the modern cinema’s giants like Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio, there’s yet another big figure who actually owes her skyrocketed career to Scorsese’s high-rated big hit.
Ironically, her debut fierce improvisation is what mesmerizes Scorsese to this day.
In one of his interviews a few days ago, Scorsese revealed that he’d been left in shock by Margot Robbie’s improvised performance for The Wolf of Wall Street’s audition. In the movie released back in 2013, Robbie, at that time a very young, yet aspiring actress, starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as his on-screen wife Naomi Lapaglia,...

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series was in development for Paramount+ and had even been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by the streaming service, but Deadline now reports that the project is no longer moving forward.
However, the Dungeons & Dragons series isn’t entirely dead, as Hasbro Entertainment will be shopping it to other potential buyers. It’s also said the series will receive a creative update which will be tackled by a new creative team. The version which was sold to Paramount+ was overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper), who wrote the pilot script and was going to direct the first episode. Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) was brought on to serve as executive producer and showrunner last year.
The report states that Hasbro remains committed to the Dungeons & Dragons TV series, meaning that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, the project emerges elsewhere.

Saoirse Ronan is taking on one of her most intense roles yet.
After playing a haunting child with sociopathic tendencies in “Atonement,” the now-grownup A-lister leads Sundance breakout-indie “The Outrun,” based on Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir.
Ronan stars as Rona (a bit confusing), a young woman recovering from alcoholism. Rona returns to her remote home in the Orkney Islands after losing herself in London; there, she reconnects with her past, her parents, and the atmospheric isolation of the islands on which she grew up.
Nora Fingscheidt directs the highly-anticipated feature, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. IndieWire critic David Ehrlich tweeted on Thursday, “So weird that this very good Saoirse Ronan drama still doesn’t have U.S. distribution! Not the easiest sell in the world, but she’s an absolute force in it.”

Standing tall as one of the most well-decorated filmmakers of recent times and the director of the highest-grossing movie ever by a female director, Greta Gerwig put her best foot forward with Barbie. The mega-movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as its leads, rode on the creative vision of the 40-year-old as it brought to life Mattel’s doll in a story that revolved around breaking stereotypes and the boundaries between fictional and real universes.

Editor’s note: When Christopher Nolan’s eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer began its global rollout last summer, a question mark hung over whether it would ever see the inside of a cinema in Japan, given the sensitive subject matter. Ultimately, the film released there eight months later, swiftly becoming the top-grossing Hollywood title of the year and continuing to hold that position (now at $11.6M). Nine weeks in, it is still playing on more than half of the market’s Imax screens, and in local currency (¥1.774B) is Nolan’s fourth-highest-grossing picture ever there.

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

We all know that Barbie and Oppenheimer were two of the biggest box office hits of 2023, partly due to this shared release date but also because they just stole the collective attention of a diverse group of moviegoers. But would Barbenheimer have gotten as much attention had they not been released on the same day and would they have earned the same amount of viewers? Well, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos seems to think so…
Speaking with The New York Times, Ted Sarandos made his case that the undeniable successes of both Barbie and Oppenheimer had much less to do with the cinemagoing experience or the power that Barbenheimer held than most think. As Sarandos put it, “Both of those movies would be great for Netflix. They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix. And so I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that...

After beaching off Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and highlighting the hard work of stunt performers in David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, Sony is capitalizing on the “Gosling-ssance” with the release of his 2011 thriller Drive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The brutal film from Nicolas Winding Refn drips with style, presents Gosling in one of his most iconic roles, and is due for a comeback in crisp, clean, high definition.
Here’s Sony‘s official synopsis for Drive:
Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. Channel 4’s ‘Hollyoaks’ Makes International Soap History
Long-running Channel 4 series Hollyoaks has made history as the first UK soap to be made available on YouTube around the world. People living abroad will be able to stream full episodes for free, coming a few months after Channel 4 moved to a digital-first approach for episodes in the UK, while reducing weekly episode count from five to three. There will be 20 episodes in total for viewers to stream before joining the same daily drop pattern as UK YouTube subs. The series has previously been available on Hulu in the U.S. and has been running for nearly 30 years. “Hollyoaks is always synonymous with digital firsts and I am delighted that the show’s global audience will now be able to find and watch episodes when they want on YouTube,” said Kate Little, who runs the show’s producer, Lime Pictures.

By the time Chinese star Zhang Ziyi walked the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet on the event’s penultimate night last Friday, it was already clear that Chinese cinema was back on the international stage in a major way. The world’s most glamorous movie event premiered five films from China across its official selection this year, ending a long period of relative obscurity that began with the pandemic. The two most prominent Chinese films to unfurl in Cannes this year — Jia Zhangke’s acclaimed drama Caught By the Tides and Peter Chan’s commercial powerhouse She’s Got No Name, starring Zhang and a slew of big-name Chinese actors — were both backed by rising studio Huanxi Media.
Founded in 2015 by veteran producer Dong Ping (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and former attorney Steven Xiang, Huanxi Media has climbed to the forefront of the Chinese industry thanks to a streak of...

Ted Sarandos claims that the huge success of last year’s Barbie and Oppenheimer could have been replicated on Netflix.
Netflix boss Ted Sarandos has sat down with The New York Times for a comprehensive interview and among other things, claimed that the huge audience numbers that drove last year’s Barbenheimer sensation could have happened on Netflix.
Hmmm.
When asked whether those kinds of big tentpole sensations were simply outside of Netflix’s ‘wheelhouse’, Sarandos responded by stating that “both of those movies would be great for Netflix. They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix, and so I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that certain kinds of movies do or don’t work.”
Whilst Sarandos’ answer holds some truth, there are of course some things that are left unsaid.

Mission Impossible 8 Led Tom Cruise Gets Further Delayed, Source Claims Makers Are Not Happy(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and a global personality. Fans eagerly wait for his movies, especially those from the adrenaline-rushing Mission Impossible franchise. He is currently filming Mission Impossible 8, but it has hit a bit of a snag and an expensive one.
The first film in the franchise was released in 1996, and Tom has been diligently bringing out a movie in the series. Fans also show their love, and this is reflected at the box office. The Mi franchise has collected over $4 billion globally, as per The Numbers. However, last year, MI7, aka Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, failed to create the same magic at the box office, but Tom has shrugged it off and is back on the sets for its sequel.

Christopher Nolan’s thriller/historical drama from 2023, Oppenheimer, is a based-on-real-events story, and be it Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer in the lead role or Gary Oldman’s President Harry Truman in a supporting one — everyone made sure to make it seem as realistic as possible.
But what if some of the scenes from the film never really happened in the first place?
Oppenheimer. | Credit: Universal Pictures.
As it turns out, it seems like one of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie as Truman just may have stemmed from a figment of Nolan’s imagination. Or, to be more precise, it may have never happened in the first place the way it was depicted, and the filmmaker just may have improvised it.
Why? Well, simply put: Because historical accounts recall it somewhat differently.

Ryan Gosling’s latest, The Fall Guy, has been attracting widespread appreciation since its premiere at SXSW in March. Despite an underwhelming box office performance, the movie attracted the fans’ love. Now it looks like the David Leitch brainchild has also caught the attention of another Canadian A-lister, Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds, who is gearing up for his upcoming MCU big-release Deadpool & Wolverine, took to his Instagram story to praise The Fall Guy.

Netflix CEO Says “A.I. Is Not Going To Take Your Job,” As He Declares “Barbie” & “Oppenheimer” Would’ve “Enjoyed Just As Big An Audience” on The Streamer ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In an interview with the New York Times, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos expressed his unwavering faith in the streaming service he has been part of for 24 years. Ted Sarandos, who believes the streaming giant offers quality content, told the New York Times that the 2023 blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” would’ve “enjoyed just as big an audience” on Netflix as they did in theaters.
While discussing what type of content wouldn’t work on streamers, Ted Sarandos, who oversaw Netflix’s early expansion into streaming, explained there’s no reason to believe movies that do well in theatres would not have potentially fared well in streaming services. The Barbenheimer phenomenon was something that everyone talked about last summer when two very important movies came out. One of them was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a movie that showed us how great feminism can work on screen, while the other was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, a movie that showed us the terror of atomic energy. Both these movies were released at the same time and many people believed that they would cancel each other out and create a rivalry, but what happened was something completely different!
Fans of both movies united and this led to the birth of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which brought in a substantial amount of money for cinemas last year, as Barbie fans called for people to go watch Oppenheimer, while Oppenheimer fans urged people to go watch Barbie. The summer of 2023 was encapsulated in two films at the same time: Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and Barbie by Greta Gerwig. Since they came out the same weekend, moviegoers were treated to a sort of double feature.
These two blockbusters not only dominated the world last year, but they also reignited our collective desire for a silver-screen experience. Both films exceeded box office expectations, with Margot Robbie’s film enchanting its way to a $1.4 billion global haul, while Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning narrative netted a whopping $951.4 million.

But Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stirred quite the conversation with his belief that these films could have shone just as brightly on streaming platforms. One can’t help but wonder: How different would the scenario be if these cultural phenomena had debuted on Netflix rather than the cinema’s big screen?

In a new interview, the Netflix CEO said that the films starring Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy would’ve been just as big on the streaming platform.

Barbie and Oppenheimer, directed by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, respectively, were big box office winners.

The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Last summer, Stereotypical Barbie admitted on the dance floor that sometimes she thinks about dying, and in part because of her brutal, relatable honesty, "Barbie" was the biggest hit of the year. Now, Bob the Builder is apparently set to endure the toy company Mattel's next on-screen existential crisis, as star Anthony Ramos says that the movie will follow a version of Bob who has "kind of lost his sense of what it is, to build," per Total Film.
"In the Heights" and "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" star Ramos spoke to Total Film for the magazine's latest print issue, in which he tried to explain the weirdly emotionally complex plot of the upcoming "Bob the Builder" film. The movie was previously described by The Guardian as being about Bob traveling to Puerto Rico, where he "takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build.

“We really led with our hearts for everything we watched,” said 77th Cannes Film Festival Jury President Greta Gerwig on what was a fiercely competitive year.
In a Cannes that delivered a Demi Moore comeback pro-femme horror film Substance, a ground breaking trans noir Spanish-lingo musical in Emilia Perez, Francis Ford Coppola’s $120M passion project Megalopolis, it was Sean Baker’s dark romantic comedy about a sex worker, Anora that transcended this year’s jury.
“It was an embarrassment of riches this year in terms of cinema,” exclaimed Gerwig, “we (the jury) could have been talking into next week.”
Anora follows a stripper who falls for a Russia oligarch’s son. He loves her so much, he marries her, much to the chagrin of his family. Chaos ensues.
Said Gerwig on why they chose it: “There was something that reminded us of a classic, there were structures of Lubitsch and Howard Hawks.

We've written a lot here at /Film about how water can be a director's biggest nightmare, but it's also worth mentioning those pesky mirrors. Their reflective surfaces make it extra difficult to avoid the cameraman and other crew members accidentally popping up in the shot. It's something that really complicated the filming of franchises like "The Matrix," where half the characters are wearing reflective sunglasses most of the time. It also made that one mirror room sequence in "John Wick 2" nearly impossible to pull off.
The bright side of mirrors is that they do tend to make scenes look better. A room with mirrors looks more spacious than a room without them, and their reflections provide all sorts of opportunities for fun visual foreshadowing or thematic subtext. There's also the fun meta aspect of "how'd they pull this off?" for the audience. It's tough to figure out how Alfonso Cuarón...

With the box office being in dire straits, I feel a little awkward telling you to stay home and watch stuff on Netflix. Anyway, stay home and watch stuff on Netflix!
All kidding aside, summer is bearing down upon us, and that means unbearable, scorching hot temperatures. (Thanks global warming!) So, what better way to burn though your free time than by plopping yourself down in an air-conditioned theater and checking out the latest releases? After a relatively slow start to the year, June looks to turn things up a notch with some notable tentpoles. Tragically, however, you can't spend all of your non-working hours at the multiplex -- not even for the "Lord of the Rings" re-release.
That being the case, I've selected some top picks among the titles coming to Netflix in June, all of which can be enjoyed without leaving your living room (or whatever room(s...

The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux debuted during CinemaCon last month, giving us an intriguing glimpse of some footage from Todd Phillips' DC "Elseworlds" sequel.
In what would seem to be a major change to the usual character dynamic, the teaser revealed that Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) meets Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) as a fellow patient(?) in Arkham Asylum, and it looks like she'll be the one asserting influence over him.
While speaking to Access Hollywood, Gaga teased her new interpretation of the popular Batman villain, who has generally been portrayed as more of an anti-hero in recent years.
“You know, my version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” said the Oscar and Grammy Award winner. “I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.

There's a delicate dance to pulling off a great cameo. If a random appearance overstays its welcome, it can feel — to borrow a wrestling term — like a cheap pop. Following persistent rumors, we got word that Disney was officially moving forward with a live-action remake of Hercules back in 2022, with Aladdin director Guy Ritchie set to helm the project and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo on board as producers.
Updates have been few and far between since then, and we're still waiting to find out which actors are going to bring life to the main characters.
Previous rumors have claimed that Taron Edgerton and Ariana Grande were up for the roles of Hercules and Meg, and while there's every chance they will end up being cast, we may be able to add another name to the mix for the movie's female lead.
According to reliable Disney source the DisInsider, pop megastar turned actress Dua Lipa might be a contender to play Meg. He doesn't say whether she's actually in talks, only that the studio "likes" her for the part.

Miike Snow are back with their first new song in eight years, “I Was a Sailor.”
Built around a natural drum groove and a hazy piano part, “I Was a Sailor” demonstrates the Swedish band’s knack for creative arrangements and memorable melodies. Tension-building verses give way to a catchy chorus, and a flute solo adds a wonderful layer of color overtop.
“I Was a Sailor” was first debuted by Miike Snow during their performance at Just Like Heaven festival in 2019. Now, the recorded version arrives after a few days of social media teasing, and ahead of gig at BottleRock Napa Valley this weekend. Stream the single below.
Miike Snow’s most recent album was iii in 2016. Last year, the band’s Andrew Wyatt collaborated with Mark Ronson on songs for Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster Barbie. In March, he even performed “I’m Just Ken” along with Ronson, Ryan Gosling,...

Unlike a number of recent, high-profile events, last week’s 2024 Webby Awards were not disrupted by protests over Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas. There were no demonstrators visible outside of the event’s Cipriani Wall Street venue in Manhattan, and none of the five-word acceptance speeches delivered onstage on May 13 referenced the Gaza conflict.
But that doesn’t mean the evening was free from hot-button political issues.
Webbys president Claire Graves spoke about the “assault on reproductive rights all over this country” as she introduced Phenomenal Media CEO Meena Harris, who also happens to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece, who spoke about abortion restrictions implemented since Roe v. Wade was overturned, as she presented an award to the Plan C documentary about the initiative to increase access to abortion pills.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was also among this year’s winners, receiving an award for her “Governor Barbie” social videos.

The MCU is ever-expanding and adding more stars to its already heavy list of actors. Simu Liu, who recently starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 2024 film Atlas, has been heavily rumored to be in the next Avengers film (and rightfully so).
Simu Liu in a still from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Marvel Studios
Iconic actress Jennifer Lopez, who was once briefly engaged to Ben Affleck back in 2004, married the actor in a private ceremony in 2022, and they have been living happily. Simu Liu and Lopez were quick to shut up the interviewer with respect to the rumors that the actress was divorcing Affleck.
MCU Star Simu Liu Doesn’t Want That Energy Around Him
Atlas is an upcoming Netflix film starring Simu Liu and Jennifer Lopez which is on the verge of release. Depicting the story of AI and a robot gone rogue, the concept is quite interesting.

The ‘life-simulator’ video game “The Sims” is the next feature film project from producer Margot Robbie, following her LuckyChap Productions “Barbie” box office success, with Kate Herron (“Loki”) attached to direct for Amazon/MGM:
“…’The Sims’ developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide…
“…and is one of the best-selling video game series of all time. It is also part of the larger ‘Sim’ series, started by ‘SimCity’ in 1989.
“The games in the ‘Sims’ series are largely ‘sandbox games’, in that they lack any defined goals…
“…except for some later expansion packs and console versions.
“The player creates virtual people called ‘Sims’…
“…places them in houses, or playing outside and helps direct their moods and satisfy their desires…”
