Only the learned can perceive the merit, goes the saying. Among the vast pool of talent in Hollywood, only a few have managed to bring across a resounding impact not only in terms of the box office but also by catapulting into everyday pop culture. The latest entrant to that hallowed fame is the cinematic genius and the 21st-century Dune adaptation’s director, Denis Villeneuve, whose worth has found immense praise from fellow film pioneer, Steven Spielberg.

Dave Bautista is one of the few iconic WWE stars who have transitioned into Hollywood quite perfectly. While Bautista started off in the industry via an uncredited cameo in Relative Strangers way back in 2006, it is his stints in multiple major franchises that have led to him becoming a part of the mainstream.

During a recent interview, the 55-year-old went into detail over the kind of mindset that he was in, when he first read the scene.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was the first big blockbuster of the year and led to a horde of new fans joining the fandom. The Timothée Chalamet starrer was based on Frank Herbert’s popular sci-fi novels and was the sequel of 2021’s Dune: Part One. The film also starred Stellan Skarsgård, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and more.
While the film’s release led to many ‘Lisan-al-Gaib’ memes, nothing from the film went as viral as the infamous Dune popcorn bucket. The sandworm-shaped bucket was an object of ridicule from fans as well as the stars themselves. Ryan Reynolds recently released the Deadpool and Wolverine popcorn bucket as a joke, to which Villeneuve has responded.

The father of the Dune franchise, Denis Villeneuve, has recently lamented the fact that Dune 2 is still the highest-grossing movie of the year that earned more than $711M.
However, both Villeneuve and the audience can pay attention to other worth-watching box office successes of 2024, with 7 of them being enlisted here.
1. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — $567 Million
Indeed, this year’s installment of the Monsterverse franchise attracted millions of viewers worldwide. The epic action roller coaster, following the next collaboration of Kong and Godzilla, is a must-watch for all kaiju movie fans.
2. Kung Fu Panda 4 — $543 Million
The animated martial arts franchise is still our favorite, and its box office success proves it. Both kids and adults will have a lot of fun observing Po’s complicated search for his successor as the new Dragon Warrior.
3. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes — $338 Million

For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

Another weekend in the books, another reason to be pessimistic about the state of the box office in 2024. We are just coming off of the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades in terms of ticket sales, thanks to weak performances by both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie." Now? With no meaningfully big movies entering the marketplace, theaters were left to suffer -- so much so that this past weekend now ranks as literally one of the worst weekends the summer box office has experienced in a quarter century.
"The Garfield Movie" held far better than "Furiosa" in its second weekend, as the animated film topped the charts with a $14 million haul. That's good for Sony, but terrible for the industry at large. When we're in the midst of the summer moviegoing season and the number one movie on a given weekend pulls in $14 million, we're in trouble.

At this rate, it would be more informative to report who isn’t in “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.”
Josh Brolin, most recently of “Dune: Part Two” and “Outer Range,” is the latest A-lister to join the cast of Rian Johnson’s next mystery movie, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The Academy Award nominee joins a very famous ensemble that already includes franchise star Daniel Craig, reprising his role as brilliant private detective Benoit Blanc, plus Josh O’Connor (“Challengers”), Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Jeremy Renner (“Mayor of Kingstown”), and Mila Kunis (“Luckiest Girl Alive”).
“Knives Out” movies are mysteries where a gaggle of murder suspects assemble at an isolated location and Blanc figures out whodunit, with the help of the person who loved the victim the most. They’re known for their star-studded casts, which included Chris Evans,...

Rian Johnson is collecting stars for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, like Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities for cameos in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the upcoming horror game Od. Johnson’s Knives Out 3 is chock full of Hollywood heavy-hitters, with Josh Brolin being the latest name added to the pile. The third chapter of Johnson’s whodunit series, Wake Up Dead Man, finds Daniel Craig reprising the role of Detective Benoit Blanc with Josh O’ Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis rounding out the cast.
Plot details remain a mystery, though production for Knives Out 3 begins in the U.K. in early June. From his script, Rian Johnson directs Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. He’s also producing with his T-Street studio partner, Ram Bergman. The first film in the series, Knives Out,...

Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve should be running a victory lap after his sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Two” earned over $700 million at the box office this year and after recently receiving the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on May 31, but the current lack of audiences showing up to movie theaters this summer is bringing him down.
Speaking to the press after receiving the award, Villeneuve said, “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theater, and I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2.’ Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like ‘Civil War,’ for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theater. I was lucky that ‘Part Two’ did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly.”

Denis Villeneuve is "disappointed" that 'Dune: Part Two' remains the highest-grossing film of 2024.The 56-year-old director's sci-fi epic is still the most successful film of the year despite being released in March and he thinks that it is a sad indictment of the film industry that none of the summer blockbusters have been able to surpass it.Speaking after receiving the Academy Icon Award at the Canadian Screen Awards, Denis said: "I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I'm not just talking about 'Dune 2'. This past Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start to summer – was a dismal one at the box office, with reports putting it as the worst turnout in decades. Topping the chart was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with around $32 million, just barely edging out Garfield. So what can be expected from the summer box office if this is how it’s going to kick off?

Update: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie, which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international and global charts this frame.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is that we have touched bottom for the summer, and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday, and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at $80 million.

In morose moments, and I’ll admit to having a few, I sometimes stare at a framed illustration on my work desk. Entitled “Hollywood 1988,” it is a whimsical map of the motion picture business as it existed back then. The concept and a lot of the sight gags were mine; but Nancy Ohanion was the artist who made it work for the Calendar section of the Los Angeles Times. (You can find her signature hidden just above The Cave of Studio Accounting.)

After being released earlier this year, Dune: Part Two is still the biggest hit film of the year as of the time of writing, topping the global box office. Fans and critics are very satisfied, and the film promises to be one of the biggest contenders in the upcoming awards season, as Denis Villeneuve produced yet another hit film. The film has so far earned $711,844,358 at the global box office, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, both of which passed the $500 million mark. But, while Dune: Part Two can still be seen in some theaters, it is a movie that premiered almost four months ago (in February). Well, the director made some bold comments regarding the high earnings that Dune: Part Two earned. While talking about other movies and people not going to theaters, Villeneuve revealed that he’s sad that his film is still at number one on the box office collection!

Mastermind filmmaker Denis Villeneuve surpassed absolutely all expectations that fans had of him by helming the Dune film series. It was made so immaculately that it turned into a mammoth-like distinctly successful franchise.
And yet, such tremendous success — especially at the global box offices — of the second installment of his book-based film series, seems to have rubbed the director the wrong way.

This comes after Villeneuve himself expressed his disappointment and one major regret about his Timothée Chalamet-starrer sequel to the 2021 masterpiece. Although, the movie has already conquered the box office with a remarkable victory that is yet to be surpassed by other projects this year.
But as unbelievable as it all may seem, the reason behind his regret and disappointment is actually only valid.

Denis Villeneuve is both humbled and a little disappointed that Dune: Part Two is still rocking at the box office.
While in Toronto Friday to receive the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, the director said he was “disappointed to still be number one. … I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.”
Released on March 1, Dune: Part Two has grossed more than $711 million worldwide. It remains the top grossing movie of 2024, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($567M).
“I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2,” Villeneuve went on to say. “Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like Civil War, for instance, is a...

The story of Dave Bautista's Hollywood career is the story of him trying to prove he's not your average wrestler-turned-actor. To be fair, Bautista's best movies really do suggest he has the talent to take his acting career beyond the tough-man roles so many former grapplers come to embody. He proved that he has potential with his role as Sapper Morton in "Blade Runner 2049," and then followed through on that promising turn with his performance as Leonard in 2023's "Knock at the Cabin." But despite charting a diverse filmography and being recognized as the best wrestler-turned-actor by his "Glass Onion" director Rian Johnson, it's always seemed like Bautista has wanted more.
Though he claims to have proven himself with "Knock at the Cabin," that doesn't mean he's done demonstrating his talents. This year, we've seen him finally given more to do in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology...

"Dune: Part Two" is a masterpiece of blockbuster cinema, a bleak spectacle of doom about the dangers of messianic myths, a grand scale story with some of the best-looking set pieces of the past year. As far as adaptations of Frank Herbert's book goes, this is the best one.
A big highlight of the film is the moment Paul Atreides finally rides his first sandworm, fully becoming one of the Fremen and unlocking a giant and intense desert Uber system. As impressive as the moment is on the screen, it only happened due to meticulous work behind the scenes. The book "The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two" by Tanya Lapointe and Stefanie Broos, details how the three-minute scene was made using over 60 shots filmed over a period of two months.

A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu on Blu-ray released to the Criterion Collection on May 7th, 2024.
This marked only my third and forth film by Yasujiro Ozu. I already owned the Criterion Collection releases of Tokyo Story and Good Morning, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed, with Good Morning instantly becoming one of my favorite experiences with Japanese cinema. Part of what makes the Criterion Collection so great is the way it makes important films easily accessible for collectors.

After the Dune 2 popcorn bucket came out to be a viral hit among fans, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds promised his version of the popcorn bucket ahead of the release of his upcoming MCU movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Recently, Reynolds teased the detailed look of the official popcorn bucket of the highly anticipated Marvel movie.

Marvel prepares Deadpool & Wolverine to be a box office smasher, keeping the movie as the only slate from the studio in 2024. The marketing of the movie is also in full swing as Reynolds recently unveiled the look of the popcorn bucket for the movie, which features Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman in the movie. If the “Dune: Part Two” souvenir popcorn bucket accidentally looked like a sex toy, the “Deadpool and Wolverine” model took the mistake and ran with it.
The “Deadpool 3” popcorn bucket, adorned with “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” is just as degrading to Wolverine as Ryan Reynolds is to his faux-nemesis Hugh Jackman. Perhaps more.
Made to resemble Wolverine’s classic yellow helmet, the popcorn bucket features a gaping mouth. Its promotional video, shared on social media by Reynolds, shows liquid butter dripping down Logan’s masked face. Subtlety has never been in Deadpool’s golf bag.
“Years from now they will look back at 2024 as the year the War of the Popcorn Buckets began,” Reynolds tweeted.

Move over, “Dune,” there’s a new bang-able popcorn bucket in town.
Ryan Reynolds has revealed the new popcorn bucket created for “Deadpool and Wolverine” on social media Thursday — and the video is just as inappropriate as you’d expect from the R-rated superhero.
Inspired by the viral “Dune 2” popcorn bucket, the “Deadpool 3” receptacle is modeled after Wolverine’s head, but it has a comically oversized mouth you can fill with popcorn (or your movie snack of choice). Reynolds unveiled the bucket with a short video set to the epic song “Also Sprach Zarathustra” from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
In the video, Deadpool slowly caresses the Wolverine popcorn bucket as the camera zooms in on its plastic features. Popcorn then falls from above and fills up the Wolverine mouth; and to top it all off, butter drizzles down his nose. It’s the latest viral marketing stunt for “Deadpool and Wolverine,...

Not too long ago, /Film provided a very serious review of the new "Despicable Me 4" popcorn bucket, turning one of Gru's loyal Minions into a receptacle for everyone's favorite buttery snack at the multiplex. It was a far cry from the surprisingly sexual "Dune: Part Two" popcorn bucket that featured the mouth of a sandworm emerging from the desert, complete with an opening that looked like it probably provided immense amounts of pleasure outside of movie theater snacking. But that's nothing compared to the "Deadpool & Wolverine" popcorn bucket.
On social media and YouTube, Ryan Reynolds revealed the "Deadpool & Wolverine" popcorn bucket that will be available for sale this summer when Marvel's first R-rated movie hits the big screen. We finally know what the popcorn bucket will look like for the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” film. Marvel promised a naughty bucket, and now we have it—Wolverine with a mouth that mimics sex dolls, which is on brand, honestly, and sure to lead to fisting jokes. Theatrical exclusivity is holding steady: In the first four months of 2024, it was around 30 days before PVOD — same as last year. However, as we track the theatrical, PVOD, and streaming lifecycles we’re seeing a new trend: The gap between theaters and streamers is shrinking.
Already, we’re seeing first-quarter theatrical releases like Sony’s “Anyone But You” on Netflix or “Dune 2” on Max. For the first two months of 2024, the average gap between the theatrical opening day and the streamers’ debuts was just 68 days. For the same period in 2023, it was 90 days.
Every wide release from the first four months of 2024 is now available for home viewing (or will be soon). The 30-day average between theatrical and PVOD debuts now appears to be a norm, and any stability is welcome in an uncertain industry. However, the accelerating move to streaming is bad news for theaters.
Faster streaming means another theatrical disincentive.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two made numerous headlines by becoming the highest-grossing film of the year, thus far. While the performances were brilliant, the film’s technical department also attracted immense praise. One of the standout aspects of the film is its breathtaking makeup.
Renowned makeup artist Donald Mowat worked in the makeup department in both parts of Dune. Mowat also secured an Oscar nomination for his work in the 2021 film. Interestingly, the Dune films could have never achieved such make-up work, had the makeup artist not left another major project.
Timothée Chalamet in Dune | Legendary Pictures
Donald Mowat had to make a tough decision when he was burdened to choose between Dune and No Time to Die. Both were highly anticipated films and the Canadian makeup fame knew that he would surely disappoint a friend as both parties were his regular collaborators.
Why did Donald Mowat choose the Denis Villeneuve film?...

One of the central villains in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" is the amoral hedonist Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, ruler of House Harkonnen and overseer of spice production on the planet Arrakis. In the novel, he is described as being so immensely fat that he required a suit of anti-gravity devices -- called suspensors -- to hoist his massive girth. The Baron is cruel, power-mad, and regularly has sex slaves sent to his quarters so that he may engage in sick acts of murderous coitus. Some have criticized the Baron as an example of fatphobia and, rather unfortunately, "queer villainy" in popular media.
In David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of "Dune," the Baron was played by Kenneth McMillan, and Lynch made him all the more revolting by encrusting his face with oily carbuncles that produced shot glasses of black pus. McMillan was outfitted with a fat suit, although he was decidedly...

Director Denis Villeneuve hit it big this year with the release of his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series, the film followed the story of feudal noble families in the future. Villeneuve’s handling of the adaptation, which was largely considered to be unadaptable, was lauded by critics and fans alike.
While Villeneuve seems to have cracked the sci-fi genre, he reportedly was full of praise for his contemporary Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The Dune director mentioned that he was in awe of the film while watching it and that he had watched it several times. Tenet remains one of Nolan’s more divisive works and earned only $359 million at the box office.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.

Mentats are among the most confusing elements of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation. Though they are never properly explained in the movie, mentats are essential to the world of the film, and to the world of Frank Herbert's novels. They are basically human computers, capable of complex calculations — which makes them great political advisers due to their ability to forecast how any action will affect their lords. The smartest of all mentats is Thufir Hawat, who (in the novel) discovers the secret to Shaddam Corrino IV's Sardaukar, and is a major element in Duke Leto's plan to defeat his elite troops.
As played by Stephen McKinley Henderson in Villeneuve's first "Dune" film, Thufir Hawat also has the honor of being in one of the two funniest scenes in the movie when he suddenly shows up with a little parasol. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Henderson said the parasol...

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. But that didn't mean the look of "Dune" and "Part Two" came exclusively from the book. Production designer Patrice Vermette consulted a wide array of sources, leading to sets...

While most people probably think primarily of his strange cadence and his big hair, it's important to remember that Christopher Walken is a damn great actor (see his brief but memorable turn in "Dune: Part Two" as a recent reminder). Sure, Walken has achieved a sort of "living meme" status at this point in his career, but when he's on, he's on, and he's bound to turn in a killer performance. While his "Saturday Night Live" appearances have proven Walken is skilled at comedy, there's something inherently sinister about the actor, which means he's played a lot of villains throughout his career. He's one of our best movie bad guys. Think his cameo as a ruthless mobster in "True Romance," his turn as Donald Trump stand-in Max Shreck in "Batman Returns," and of course, one of his very best performances: drug lord Frank White in Abel Ferrara's nihilistic "King of New York.

Inside Out, the cherished Pixar movie will finally have a follow-up after over ten years! Riley’s constantly changing emotions will be used to examine the difficulties of adolescence in this new chapter.
Inside Out 2 Box Office Expectations
Disney and Pixar’s much-awaited sequel brings viewers back to Riley’s mind, who is 13 years old now, where new anthropomorphized emotions take control to keep up with her teenage feelings. What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.
Denis Villeneuve is not directing any episodes
The original plan was for Villeneuve to helm the series in addition to his big screen directorial duties. The series, originally announced as Dune: The Sisterhood,...

The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Everything about the making of 1954's "Godzilla" feels miraculous. The movie is a feat of filmmaking on every level, from its now aged yet still impressive practical effects to its bold nuclear threat story set in post-war Japan. The film utilized every trick in the book to bring its eponymous kaiju to life, from building a monster costume out of plastic and concrete to creating Godzilla's infamous roar by rubbing the loosened strings of a double bass.
The team behind the original "Godzilla" movie, which included director Ishirō Honda, special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, and the team at Toho Studios, got creative with their moviemaking at every opportunity. Still, no amount of creative problem-solving could save the cast and crew from the forces of nature, which apparently conspired against the production during some especially sweltering days in Japan's Mie prefecture.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which released this year, boasted an incredible cinematic experience for the audiences. One of the primary highlights of the Dune franchise has been the Sandworms. The colossal spice-producing worms on the planet of Arrakis were hauntingly beautiful and provided an exceptional theater experience.
One might think that the sandworm must be the toughest part of the franchise based on Frank Herbert’s works. However, the mastermind behind both the Dune films, Villeneuve has claimed that the Desert Mouse was no cakewalk as well.
The Sandworms in Dune | Legendary Pictures
Even after successfully bringing the mammoth Sandworms on-screen, Denis Villeneuve admitted that the small Desert Mouse demanded a lot of work from the creative department.
