“Apples Never Fall” costume designer Allyson B. Fanger said with her job on the Peacock drama is completely based in story, propelling narrative through costuming.
“I love, love working with families because you need to find the common thread of the family and keep it consistent and yet find the individuality within each character,” she said. “That was really easy to do.”
Fanger joined “The Masked Singer” costume designer Steven Lee, “We’re Here” costume designer Marco Morante, “The Morning Show” costume designer Sophie De Rakoff, “Lessons in Chemistry” hair designer Teressa Hill and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” makeup department head Natasha Marcellina in a Makeup, Hair and Costume Design panel for Variety‘s A Night With Artisans. The panel was moderated by Variety‘s Senior Artisans Editor Jazz Tangcay.

In Season 1 of “The Morning Show,” Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) is the cutthroat head of Uba’s news division who keeps his cards close to his vest and walks in and out of rooms grinning like a Cheshire cat. Cut to Season 3 and he’s still ruthless, enigmatic and grinning his way through all kinds of high-stakes situations, but he’s now the CEO of the fictional Uba network and has, most importantly, been brought to the fore of the Apple TV+ drama’s story. While his enlarged presence in the third season offers viewers more insight into the character, Crudup wasn’t quite sure what to think of it at first.

Lily Tomlin feels "rejected" over Jennifer Aniston's new version of '9 to 5'.The 55-year-old 'Friends' actress recently revealed she plans to produce a reimagining of the 1980 classic - which starred Tomlin alongside Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton - and Tomlin has admitted she was hurt when she heard about plans to bring the story to the big screen once again. When asked how she feels about the new film, Tomlin told People: "I felt sort of the same way I felt about the [2009 Broadway] musical. You know, part of you feels rejected. You think that character’s yours always. And you could reembody it."She went on to insist Aniston and screenwriter Diablo Cody may face some troubles getting the project off the ground. She added: ""It's going to be tough to make [the movie] happen. My sympathies are with Jennifer and her writer Diablo, who is a good writer.

The first days back on set of “The Morning Show” after a season break are always a humbling experience, Greta Lee acknowledges.
“We constantly joke at the start of each season that we have to re-learn how to talk that fast,” Lee tells Variety. “I wish people could see how hysterical it is. It is like a bunch of elephants getting dropped onto a treadmill. It is such an athletic job, and it is immediately humbling because it is so challenging for every single person.”
Rediscovering the brisk cadence of the Apple TV+ drama isn’t the only hurdle. As she prepares to start shooting Season 4 this summer, she will again have to muster the unbridled confidence of her character Stella Bak, a determined millennial savant who joined in Season 2 with a plan to draw younger audiences to the Uba network as the first female news division president. But Stella is relentless,...

The creation of a new Android-compatible Apple TV app will give Android users a better way to stream titles on Apple TV+.
Apple versus Android is perhaps the best-known feud in the tech world. The devout following that Apple has built with its devices may not be as large as Android’s pool of device users, but Apple has maintained a level of exclusivity by limiting many of its most popular features to its own devices in order to encourage more and more trend-chasing customers to make the switch. But a new report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is preparing to change course a bit, at least with one feature, by finally agreeing to create an Apple TV app that will allow viewers to stream Apple TV+ and Mls Season Pass on Android mobile phones and tablets.

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is coming to an end with the second part of the final season, currently in production. While a spinoff series is in the slate from the same creator, neither Sheridan nor Paramount has said anything definitive about the series. According to a recent report, three major Yellowstone stars would return to the spinoff series with a record salary.

It was reported that Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes would return in the spinoff. Earlier reports suggested that the spinoff is eyeing top actors like Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Pfeiffer, who are pricier than the three aforementioned Yellowstone stars.
However, it is unlikely that these stars would beat the record salaries of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in The Morning Show.

“I don’t know if anybody told you, but none of us knows what we’re doing,” announces two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster halfway through the Drama Actress Emmy Roundtable. For months now, awards prognosticators across the interwebs have been lamenting the state of the Emmy’s Drama categories. No, not the Emmy Awards that already happened (let’s not get into all that again) but the one TV Academy members will vote on in a few weeks. After a strike-altered release calendar and the departure of daddy’s No. 1 boy, 2024 was destined to be a strange awards season. Seven of last year’s eight nominees for Best Drama Series are no longer in contention. None of the most recent Primetime Emmy winners are eligible. A new Best Director, Writer, Actor, Actress and more will be crowned. Yet in an often-repetitive TV awards cycle, the excitement typically felt for a fresh field has been tempered by this year’s lackluster yield.
That is, excitement was tempered until a few weeks ago, when a white knight golden samurai rode in to rescue the Emmys.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Back in 2019, the world saw the first season of The Morning Show, following the aftermath of the allegations of sexual misconduct behind a network broadcast morning news program. Since then it has become one of Apple TV’s trademark shows.
However, in the same year, a movie that is quite reminiscent of this series was released. Even though it received significantly less hype, it’s still worth a watch and our attention to the depicted events. Luckily, it’ll be added to Prime’s catalog tomorrow, on May 25.
The plot of this drama revolves around three ambitious women, who work at one of America's most powerful news networks, Fox News. While their broadcasts contain lots of provocative headlines, their names are about to become headlines themselves.
The point is that the women join efforts to expose the channel’s CEO, their professional “father” who made them famous, for sexual harassment...

Jennifer Aniston delivered another star-powered performance in the new season of Apple TV’s flagship series, “The Morning Show.” The series follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a morning TV show in the US, with co-anchors Alex Levy (Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) at the center of events.

“Shōgun” is causing a lotta drama — in our Emmy predictions. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss our updated “Shōgun”-heavy drama picks and “Shōgun”-less limited picks. Plus: Our guest category predictions!
With second and third seasons of “Shōgun” in development, the FX series must compete in drama now instead of limited at the Emmys. The acclaimed epic definitely fortifies the previously weak drama field and became an automatic frontrunner (it’s still in second in the odds behind “The Crown”). How many statuettes can and will it win in drama? Can supporting favorites Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) hold off “Shōgun” fan faves Moeka Hoshi and Tadanobu Asano?

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

The series has received rave reviews from newbies and devotees of the video game alike.
Lucy Mangan (The Guardian) observed: “For newcomers such as me, this intelligent, drily witty, immaculately constructed series set in the Fallout universe fully captivates and entertains on its own terms.”
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Bizarre but intensely fun, ‘Fallout’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen; for that reason alone, you won’t be able to turn away.”

Before the debut episode of Friends aired on NBC in 1994, director Jimmy Burrows took the cast on a trip to Las Vegas.
"He handed us each a couple hundred bucks and said, ‘Now go into the casino and go gamble because this is the last time you’ll be able to walk into a casino anonymously,’" Jennifer Aniston recalled in a 2019 interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
"And we had no clue what he was talking about. And sure enough, that was the last time we were able [do that].”
Such was the power of network television in the '90s.
Six unknown young actors could transform overnight into a half-dozen A-listers, entirely on the strength of one popular primetime sitcom.
Eventually, those unknowns would become the highest-paid actors in the history of television, pocketing over $1 million per episode.
Years later, along with costar Reese Witherspoon, Aniston would break her own record, earning $2 million...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Streaming is not the cost-efficient miracle it once seemed. Just a few years ago, when Max (formerly HBO Max) and Netflix were really the only streamers around, cord-cutting was a great way to avoid paying $100 (or more) every month for cable or satellite. Now, however, other streamers have entered the fray with their own buzzy programming, from Hulu to Paramount+, and major studios have launched their own streaming services with exclusive content.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

After his famed role as Don Draper on AMC’s critically acclaimed drama series Mad Men, Jon Hamm has experienced a particularly peculiar career transition in recent years. Also known for his work in Sucker Punch & Top Gun: Maverick, the actor, 53, has acted in both highly regarded film and TV roles during his career.
But did you know, nestled within his portfolio of work, there lies a film that has almost slipped through the cracks of cinematic memory?
John Hamm in Stolen | 2 Bridges Productions
In 2009, he took on the role in Stolen, a frequently overlooked chapter of Hamm’s life that true cinephiles may recall. Though the actor’s renowned charm and depth could elevate any role, this murder mystery remarkably stood as an endeavor that slipped past audiences and critics alike.

Filming romantic or intimate scenes can be challenging for some actors, a problem often mitigated by the presence of an intimacy coordinator on set. However, it’s a luxury the beloved singer Dolly Parton did not have while filming her debut movie. After making reigns as a singer-songwriter with hits like Jolene and Here You Come Again, Parton embarked on her journey on the silver screen, debuting with the 1980 comedy film 9 to 5.

Deadline has learned that FX will submit the saga — which originally premiered as a limited series — in the drama category. It also owns the unscripted production company EverWonder Studios, the children’s entertainment company Hidden Pigeon Company, and the digital news outlet Front Office Sports.

Makeup design doesn’t always mean prosthetics or extremes — that’s why the Emmy Awards smartly single out contemporary makeup design as its own category. But too often, those more immediately arresting designs are the ones that get all the attention. Not anymore. Join IndieWire in celebrating the makeup artists creating subtle, character-specific work for contemporary shows.
In “The Morning Show,” viewers get a glimpse of the glamorous and grueling nature of producing national morning news shows through fictional Uba network anchors Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon).
Season 3 of the Apple TV+ drama sees Uba anchors and executives in multiple new locations beyond their home base of New York City, from Texas to the Hamptons to Montana (and even space!). These environments impacted the work of makeup department head Cindy Williams in unexpected ways.
“When we are shooting in heat, we carry coolers to store the makeup in.

Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell are not in the mood to share their wedding venue in the first trailer for the comedy feature You’re Cordially Invited.
Amazon released the promo Tuesday for director Nicholas Stoller’s movie that is set to begin streaming via Prime Video on Jan. 30, 2025. The film centers on a father (Ferrell) who learns that the venue for his daughter’s nuptials has been double-booked by a different bride and her wedding-planner sister (Witherspoon). Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner and Jimmy Tatro round out the cast.
“Let’s get something straight,” Ferrell warns Witherspoon in the trailer. “If I look out on that dock, and that bride’s not my baby girl, that bride’s going in the fucking lake.”
Witherspoon responds, “I’m gonna kick your ass, and it’s going to be embarrassing because you’re big, and I’m little.”

More than a decade after winning a guest acting Emmy for her work as quirky lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni on CBS’s “The Good Wife,” Carrie Preston is now seeking lead category recognition for reprising the character on the same network’s “Elsbeth.” If she is included the upcoming Best Drama Actress lineup, she will make Emmys history as the first performer ever nominated as a lead for a winning dramatic guest role.
Preston was awarded the 2013 Best Drama Guest Actress Emmy for her seventh of 14 “Good Wife” appearances, which were spread over six seasons. After landing a second bid for that series in 2016, she showed up in five episodes of the Paramount+ spinoff “The Good Fight,” with her last appearance occurring one month before the series finale in November 2022. “Elsbeth” premiered this February and has already been renewed for a second season.

“Shōgun” may be returning for a second season as star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada has signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the Japan-set historical epic, sources tell Variety.
The show was billed as a limited series, but, as Variety reported Thursday, FX is considering moving “Shōgun” into the drama categories in this year’s Emmy race.
FX declined to comment.
Sources indicate that, in the event of a Season 2 renewal, Cosmo Jarvis would likely also return to reprise his role of Pilot-Major John Blackthorne. Of course, there are plenty of other pieces that must fall into place before an official greenlight.
Should “Shōgun” be renewed, FX would majorly shake up the Emmys race, pitting the big-budget series against drama contenders “The Crown,” “The Morning Show” and “Fallout,” as opposed to vying limited series “Baby Reindeer,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Ripley” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
