(Showa Version) In August 1954, exactly nine years after the surrender of Japan ending World War II, Japan was experiencing a rebirth and its economy was growing. Cities like Tokyo, Yokahama and Osaka were experiencing a rennaisance and all looked well for the future. Unfortunately, forces were at work that would put that prosperity in great danger. That month a cargo ship called the Eiko Maru was sailing home after a long ocean voyage. The night before it was scheduled to steam into port the ship suddenly exploded. The radio distress call said that they were engulfed in a blinding light and that the sea suddenly caught fire. Soon a rescue ship, the Bingo Maru, was dispatched to the same area and it too suffered the same fate. A fishing boat found survivors and it was about to take them to Odo Island where it was from, but it was also caught in the same caticlysm, but one crew member of the fishing boat, a fisherman name Masaji, survived and made it back to Odo and told his fellow islanders that his boat was attacked by a huge monster.
A few days later a team of security officials and a reporter named Hagiwira went to Odo to investigate. Hagiwira interviewed Masaji and his younger brother Shinkichi, but he didn't want to say anything out of fear of being called crazy. It was decided that the party would stay the night on the island and while they were there they witnessed an ancient ceremony recounting the legend of a giant beast the ancients called Gojira, or as known Godzilla. That same night a huge typhoon hit the island bringing high winds and torrential rains. The storm also brought something else as during the night something came ashore and destroyed several homes and killed several islanders including Masaji and his mother. Fortunately Shinkichi was spared as he managed to escape before the house was destroyed.
The next day the islanders went to Tokyo to relate what had happened. After hearing the islanders accounts it was suggested by noted paleontologist Dr. Kyohei Yemane that an expedition should go to the island to investigate. Within a few days a team led by Yemane, which included his daughter Emiko, who was betrothed to a research scientist named Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, and Hideto Ogata, a young frogman who worked for the company that owned the first two ships that were destroyed, and who was secretly Emiko's lover, went to the island to see everything for themselves. While there they found what appeared to be giant footprints that were highly radioactive. They also found that in one of the footprints was a supposedly extinct insect known as a trilobite. As they were continuing their investigation they heard what sounded like giant thunderous footprints off in the distance. The team as well as the islanders went to the top of a hill to see what could be making such a noise when to their horror they saw something terrible. Rising over the crest of the hill was a giant dinosaur like beast who let out a terrible roar. The islanders fled in panic as the creature peered over the hill. As she was running Emiko tripped and fell and was about to be grabbed by the monster, but she was grabbed by Hideto. The monster soon went back to the ocean leaving behind its gigantic footprints.
The team then went back to Japan to relate their findings. Yemane theorized that the monster was living peacefully at the deepest part of the ocean when H-bomb testing caused most of its natural food to leave from its habitat and caused him to move to the surface. At first the government officials didn't believe them, but when they saw the pictures of the beast they soon became believers. A heated debate soon started as how to deal with the situation. The more conservative members of the Diet wanted to supress the story for fear that it would elevate tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, but the more liberal members wanted to release the information to the public. The debate nearly turned violent as the officials hurled insults at each other and nearly came to blows on the floor. The navy was then given the job to drop depth charges on the beast as a way to kill it. This upset Dr. Yemane, who didn't want the beast killed, but rather studied to find out how it survived. However, the debate was made meaningless as Godzilla was spotted in Tokyo Bay. The next night he came ashore in Japan and attacked a railway yard just outside of Tokyo destroying several buildings and trains as well as killing or injuring several passengers of a speeding train.
A few days later it was decided to use the power lines that surrounded Tokyo as a way to try to kill it. They didn't have to wait long to test the plan as Godzilla came ashore. Unfortunately, the plan failed as the high voltage current didn't even phase the beast and soon the monster was rampaging through the city and destroyed it either by the crushing it with its sheer power or the use of a previously unknown power the monster had, its radioactive breath.
The day after the attack, Tokyo was in ruins and many of the buildings were burned down to the ground by the fires caused by the monster. Out of desparation, Emiko then told Hideto of a terrible weapon that Serizawa had shown her. The weapon called the Oxygen Destroyer had the power to removed all oxygen in water and as a result all living matter would be destroyed. Emiko and Hideto then went to Serizawa's laboratory to plead with him. Serizawa violently refused and even came to blows with Hideto and wound up injuring him. Emiko then went to her love's aid, and when Serizawa saw this he had a change of heart and decided to let them use the weapon, provided that it would be the only time it would be used. To ensure this, Serizawa burned all of his notes, perhaps an omen of things to come.
The next day, the navy found Godzilla resting at the bottom of Tokyo Bay. Hideto was about to go deliver the weapon when Serizawa insisted on accompanying him on the mission. At first Hideto tried to keep Serizawa from accompnanying him, but Yemane said it would be best if he did since he invented it. The two men then donned diving suits and went to the bottom of the bay. Within minutes they found Godzilla and lured him to the spot where they were. Serizawa then told Hideto to surface and that he would activate the device and would join him later. However, after activating the device, Serizawa, knowing that the woman he loved was in love with someone else and that he didn't want his weapon falling into the wrong hands, cut the lines to his suit and committed suicide as a way of ensuring that no one else would use his terrible discovery. The sea soon started to boil violently and Godizilla tried to surface, but to know avail as he went back below the surface and soon his body was nothing more than a pile of bones. The battle was won, but at a terrible price as Serizawa made the ultimate sacrifice. The people of Japan celebrated the victory, but it was tempered by an ominous prediction by Yemane saying that there probably were more monsters like Godzilla. Unfortunately, a few months later he would be proven right.
A few months after the original creature was destroyed, a scout pilot for a Japanese fishing fleet named Koji Kobayashi was forced to land his seaplane after his engine failed of the shore a rocky island just off the coast of Japan. His good friend Shoichi Tsukioka searched for him and eventually found him sitting on the shore warming himself with a small fire he built. Shoichi landed his small sea plane in the water close to Koji's plane and as the two were about to leave they heard an all to familiar roar. They soon saw that Yemane's prediction came true and that there was a Godzilla that was alive. However, things got extremely worse as they saw another monster fighting with Godzilla. After a brief battle, the monsters fell into the ocean and disappeared in a sea of foam. The two pilots immdiately got into Shoichi's plane and headed for their home base in Osaka and related their findings. After telling the authorities about the new Godzilla, they went through books and photos of different dinosaurs to try to identify the second monster. They eventually found a picture of the other monster and it was identified as an anguirisaurus, also called Anguirus. The authorities soon realized that the new Godzilla was on its way to Osaka and was a threat to the city. They then suggested a blackout to try to keep the monster from coming ashore and if it did that they would use flares to lure it back into the ocean. A few days later, Godzilla was spotted and was about to come ashore. The military then went ahead with its plan as air force jets dropped flares to lure the beast back into the ocean. Unfortunately, just as the monster was about to head back to the sea, a group of escaping convicts crashed a gasoline tanker truck in to a refinery and ignited a major fire. When Godzilla saw the flames he immediately headed back to shore and began to attack Osaka. Also, just as this was going on, Anguirus also came ashore and the two monsters immediately resumed their fight. As the two monsters battled, they destroyed several buildings in the city. The battle ended when Godzilla sank his fangs into Anguirus' throat, killing his rival. Godzilla then used his radioactive breath to cremate the other creature. After that, Godzilla returned to the ocean and disappeared. However, a few weeks later, Tsukioka spotted the creature as it headed for a glacier encrusted island and informed the authorities where it was. After hearing this, Kobiyashi headed for the spot and relieved his friend by circling the spot where the beast was. Tsukioka then accompanied his old flight commander to where the monster was, but just as they got to the island, they saw Kobiyashi's plane get hit by a blast of Godzilla's radiation breath and crash into the side of a mountain causing an avalance that fell on the monster. Seeing this, the air force then came up with a plan to bomb the mountain to create more avalanches to bury the monster. The plan was a success and Godzilla was entombed in snow and ice seemingly ending the threat forever. Unfortunately, just like what happened previously, the joy would be short lived.
Eight years later in 1962, an American submarine was dispatched to investigate a strange phenomena. Several icebergs had made their way from the Artic Ocean and were heading for Japan. The sub's captain and several scientists who were onboard then noticed a strange light eminating from one of the bergs. One scientist said that it looked like a light that came from a nuclear reactor. Just as they were discussing this, the sub accidentally crashed into the berg. With repairs impossible, the sub then released a dye marker to indicate to a rescue party where they were. Unfortunately, something attacked the sub killing all onboard. A helicopter flying above noticed the marker and was about to land to try to make a rescue when they saw it start to crumble. Soon to the crew's horror, they saw Godzilla emerge from it and soon he started to make his way for Japan, destroying a military base on its way. Almost simultaneously with Godzilla's return, Osamu Sakarai and Kinsaburo Farue who worked for a Japanese television show encountered the legendary ape-god King Kong on its home on Pharoh Island. After they watched Kong drive away a giant octopus who tried to steal his favorite drink, a juice made from a berry called soma. Kong then drank the juice and wound up falling asleep from its effects. The pair then decided to take the sleeping Kong back to Japan as a way to help boost ratings for the television show they worked for. Unfortunately, Kong broke free and soon headed for Japan where he encountered Godzilla. During a brief battle, Godzilla burned Kong with a blast of his breath. Kong then headed off to heal his burns while Godzilla headed for Tokyo. The military tried to use a poison gas trap on the monster, but it failed miserably. They then decided to go with the plan orignally used as an attempt to repel the first Godzilla; using the electrical towers that surrounded the city as a repellant. However, this time the plan worked as the voltage they used was significantly more powerful than what was used the first time. Unfortunately, this didn't work on Kong, who drew strength from electricity. After Kong broke through the barrier, he made his way to the heart of Tokyo destroying a building and grabbing a train. As he grabbed train he spotted a young girl named Fumiko, who happened to be Osamu's younger sister. Kong then made his way to the Diet building and climbed to the top. The military was about to open fire when Osamu and Fumiko's boyfriend, an inventor named Kazuo Fujita, informed the military what was going on. They saw that Fumiko was still alive and held off an attack so that they she wouldn't be killed in the attack. It was then decided to load soma into the heads of several small rocket grenades and explode them just above Kong so that the fumes would knock the creature out. After they managed this, it was decided to use tie Kong to baloons using cables made from a new type of wire Kazuo invented to airlift Kong to Mount Fuji, where it was learned that Godzilla was and have them fight with the hopes that both creatures would kill each other. After tying Kong to the balloons, he was airlifted to the mountain and just as Kong was waking up, he was dropped from the balloons. Upon landing, Kong collided with his rival and the two behemouths engaged in a ferocious battle. During the ensuing fight, Kong was knocked unconcious and Godzilla tried to emalate Kong and bury him under tons of bouders. However, just as it seemed that the great ape was about to be turned into a pile of ashes, a freak lightning storm awakened the great beast and Kong with his newfound strength began to attack his rival. Soon the monsters made their way to the side of a cliff and the two monsters fell into the ocean. This caused a massive earthquake and after it ended, Kong emerged from below the ocean seemingly the victor. Kong then headed back to his island home, while there was no sign of Godzilla. However, once again he would return.
Two years later in 1964, a massive typhoon struck Japan causing a several parts of the land to become submerged including a massive developement project. A pair of reporters covering the floods, Ichiro "Ichi" Sakai and his photographer Junko "Yoko" Nakanashi, found an interesting object floating in the water. They eventually brought it to a laboratory and didn't think anything of it for a few days. At the same time this was going on, a gigantic egg was floating towards Japan. Ichi and Junko were assigned to cover the story and met up with Professor Miura, who was conducting several tests to determine the origin of the egg. Unfortunately, this strange phenomena also brought out an exploiter named Kumayama, who was the front man for the unscrupulous Banzo Torohata. The two men planned on making the egg the centerpiece for a giant amusement park they were planning to build. However, the pair were confronted by the dimuntive twin priestesses from Infant Island, the home of Mothra. Kumayama and Torohata tried to capture the fairies, but they managed to escape. The girls soon met up with Ichi, Junko and Miura and told them how the typhoon washed the egg off of the island. They also told them that if the egg wasn't returned to Infant Island that the hatching larva might cause great damage to Japan as it searches for food. They then tell their story to the two exploiters who refuse to return the egg. However, Torohata makes a very unsavory offer. He says that he will return the egg in exchange for the girls. This repulses the trio who then head back for their hotel. This greatly upsets the girls and they, along with the parent Mothra head back to Infant Island. The next day as Ichi discusses what happened with his editor, Junko runs into the newsroom and drags Ichi off. The pair are then put into a chamber where they are subjected to a steam cleaning by Miura. He then informs them that the object they found a few days earlier at the real estate developement was highly radioactive. The trio then head off to the site with a team from the lab to find the source of the radioactivity. As this is going on, Junko sees the ground around the developement start to move. Within moment the ground pulsates and Miura discovers that that is where the source of the radiation is. Unfortunately, they soon see Godzilla emerge from the ground after being dormant for two years. Soon the monster is once again rampaging through Japan, attacking Nagoya and several other cities. It is then suggested that they make a plea to the people of Infant Island to send Mothra to Japan to fight Godzilla. The trio then headed for the once lush island that was used for nuclear testing to make their plea. Unfortunately, the natives refuse to help siting the fact that their island was devastated by nuclear testing and the fact that Mothra's egg was not returned. However, after an impassioned plea by Junko, the fairies as well as the islanders decided to let Mothra fight Godzilla. However, it was revealed that Mothra was close to death and if she went there that there was a good chance she would never return. Godzilla soon made his way to the giant incubator where the egg was kept and was about to destroy it when the adult Mothra showed up to save its offspring. Mothra briefly got the upper hand when she sprayed Godzilla with a poisonous powder. However, Godzilla then fired his breath at Mothra, mortally wounding her. She then flew off towards the spot where the egg was to die. Godzilla then headed off to a small island where a group of children were trapped along with their teacher. However, just as Godzilla was beginning to attack the island, the egg hatched and not just one catepillar emerged, but two. The lavae then headed for the island and using their silk they were able to subdue Godzilla causing him to fall in the ocean. In the meantime, Ichi and the others were able to rescue the children and sail to safety. Again, humantity was saved, but once again mankind's joy was short lived.
