- Richard Emerson and Mary Ashby undertake a marriage of convenience: she marries him for his wealth, and he marries her both for her social standing and to quash rumors of an affair with his brilliant secretary, Eleanor Lathrop. After the ceremony, the couple separates. Mary returns to their elegant country home, while Emerson, accompanied by Eleanor, travels West to work in his railroad construction camp. Time passes and Mary, despite her luxuries, discovers that only her husband can make her happy, while Emerson realizes that his opportunism has only brought him loneliness. Successful beyond his wildest expectations, Emerson returns to New York with Eleanor on the eve of his third anniversary. Visiting Mary, he discovers an anniversary dinner awaiting him, and a reconciliation seems possible. However, later that evening, Eleanor arrives and confesses her love for Emerson. The two women duel for his possession, with Mary emerging victorious.
- Robert Holliday, a member of the North West Mounted Police, is betrothed to orphaned seminary student Ruth Hardy. On the eve of her marriage, Ruth learns from John Blakeman that he and her father had been partners in the fur-smuggling business until Hardy was killed by Robert during a shootout. Shaken by this revelation, Ruth sends Robert a goodbye note and leaves with Blakeman for a trading post at Sampson's Pass. Subsequently, Robert is stationed at the pass and seeks Ruth out, but is warned to stay away by Blakeman. Meanwhile, Anitah, a half-breed, falls in love with Robert, but when she kills an unwelcome suitor, the Mountie is ordered to arrest her. After finally overtaking his quarry, Anitah provides Robert with evidence that Blakeman actually killed Ruth's father. Armed with this information, Robert goes in pursuit of Blakeman, who is killed while attempting to escape, thus clearing the way for a reconciliation between Robert and Ruth.
- Jimmy Ryder, full of dreams of conquering the world, marries Pidgie and together they go to the city to make their fortune, but fortune refuses to smile on them and they're reduced to living in poverty. One day Jimmy encounters Claire Barry, an old friend who retains an unrequited love for him, although she has since married the wealthy John Barry. Claire persuades her husband to finance Jimmy's oil-drilling explorations in return for a percentage of the profits. His first attempt fails, but Pidgie continues to lend her sympathy and support to her husband even though she is hurt at the growing attachment between Jimmy and Claire. After another attempt, Jimmy finally realizes his dream of wealth and success, until one day he overhears Pidgie comment that she has been living an invisible divorce. Finally realizing that the one thing he lacks is the consuming love he shared with Pidgie, he begs her forgiveness.
- Spoiled Marion Ainsworth resents the fact that her fiancé, Dr. Paul Carrington, a young surgeon rising rapidly in his profession, devotes more time to his work than to her. Consequently, when an emergency call from the hospital threatens to disrupt their picnic, Marion intercepts the message, causing Carrington to be late for a critical operation, thus ruining his career. On the advice of his friend Dr. Matthews, Carrington breaks his engagement and voyages to a South Sea island where he intends to carry on his research. Carrington is reported lost at sea, and a year later, Marion and her new suitor, Cyrus Carter, undertake a cruise to verify the doctor's death. En route, their yacht explodes, and Marion is washed ashore on the island where Carrington is now living. After a series of misadventures, Carrington forgives her and the couple returns to civilization together.
- While traveling through India with her Aunt Eva, Arlee Eversham meets Billy Hill, an American, and Captain Falconer, a British officer, both of whom fall in love with her. Curiosity leads Arlee to accept an invitation from the Rajah of the province to visit his palace. Aunt Eva receives a letter of invitation intended for her niece and, thinking that it is for herself, goes to the palace. Once there, both women are held prisoners, destined to become members of the Rajah's harem, until Arlee manages to send word to Billy of her predicament. Accompanied by Captain Falconer, Billy leads a successful rescue in which he saves Arlee, and the Captain discovers, much to his consternation, that he has rescued Aunt Eva.
- Maurie Monnier, a poor young American sculptor in Paris, marries Clarice, a gold-digging model who later abandons him. When Maurie's wealthy father dies, Maurie returns to the U.S., but his mother and brother will have nothing to do with him because of his poverty. At the end of his rope, he's about to kill himself when he meets Hope, a beautiful young girl who inspires him. Just when things are looking up for Maurie and his new love Hope, who should show up but his gold-digging wife Clarice.
