- It is easier to hurt children rather than astonish them. Francois Chasteller is coming to take his wife to the final procedure of their divorce. He is to take her home on the same day in the afternoon. The kids can look after themselves. But the parents shall come back only in the morning of the next day...
- Jean-Luc, his sister Paulette, Marc and Theodore, run out of gas while driving in a forest. In the morning, Jean-Luc and Marc go in quest of food and meet three natural girls: Strength, Desire, and Fear.
- Antoine, a lonely and grumbling chap, lives in a small flat inside a more or less abandoned house in the rear of some outskirts; being slightly disabled -as a child he got accidentally blown up on a war mine-, he cuts himself of from the rest of the world, the only relationship and communication he holds are with his canary bird. Alain, about 30 years old, has no sentimental, professional or family ties. Each of them stays in his own area, one being centrifugal, the other one being centripetal. Chance, or destiny, as may be, will provoke the meeting of these two somewhat special characters. Then, new relations will grow from mere observation to kind affection, from help to curiosity, from friend-ship to suspicion, from empathy to exasperation, and from comprehension to denial. Up to the point where, according to the laws of nature, or mere wickedness -as may be- they come to stupidly destroy each other. It is this history of relations, as they are lived through and supported by Antoine and Alain, in Antoine's house and everywhere around, that the film endeavors to show.
- A rich citizen of Capsa (on the Barbary Coast) had among his children a graceful and amiable daughter named Alibech, who was not baptized. Many Christian inhabitants praised their faith and the service of God in front of her. Alibech asked one of them how to serve God well. She was told that His best servants where the ones who fled from the world and particularly those who had sought retirement on the scorched mountain of the Thebaide. The girl was highly excited, and without telling anybody, she started on her journey the next day in great secrecy
- As reality is uncertain, one must take care of oneself and of other peoples (1) The Chastellers are on holiday. Last year, they nearly got divorced -strangely enough- but they didn't. Time goes by, the holiday arrives, the sun shines and make them talk. They talk about the divorce, about the father's job -he is an executive in the Arms industry. Arianne, the oldest sister who is sixteen, leaves the family for the day in a fit of anger. Jonathan Gallagnuck would like to know more about his father who was Francois Chasteller's partner twenty years ago -They were both arms dealers in Africa. He thinks that Francois can tell him more about the circumstances of his father's death. He gets all worked up. He gets hit on the head with a hammer. (1) : usually, one is never careful enough so that we all end up dead or hurt or hurting others which is pretty stupid.
- Visuals paradoxes, logical paradoxes, paradoxes of the choice and the prediction... Things, people and behaviors are not inevitably what we think they are. Let's not act ab irato (under the influence of anger, without reflection). Let's not trust our senses, the common sense, and our laziness. Let's strain ourselves to think, indeed to love (on this matter, there is no risk to make too much). note : the film is blue at the beginning, yellow at the end, this is deliberate (how does a grain of sand added to another make a beach ?)
- The unhappy flight of two unhappy young people.
