The evening approaches and the young man finally enters the room. The teacher realizes from his first few words that he is a loyal patriot. He also, however, needs to ensure that he is a good musician. The young teacher plays on a few instruments but he prefers the violin. The old teacher is reluctant to lend him his valuable instrument. He, himself, plays the piano. It turns out that the young man is an excellent musician and thus his older colleague is glad to welcome him to the school.
- A cat belonging to Mr and Mrs K describes the strange behavior of its master and mistress with the help of a fable about a mouse who is heading irrevocably towards a trap. Mr K, a valuer of deceased persons' property, has taken some jewelry and hidden it in his flat. His fear prevents him from selling his cache, however. Just when he is adorning his wife with some of the jewels, Mr B, a curious neighbor, pays them a visit.

He appoints the songwriter Strnad instead, getting him onto the train against his will. Vera, who wants to stay in Prague, is persuaded by her colleagues to go. The reason for Jílek's withdrawal is a certain sign of discontent with his songs, expressed by someone 'from a high position' somewhere once in front of Mihule, president of the festival committee. Strnad's wife is unhappy because her husband was supposed to have an urgent gall-bladder operation. The phone-calls amongst the officials result in blocking the publication of Jílek's song lyrics. Strnad returns home after having a gall-bladder attack. Jílek is supposed to fly to Warsaw but is called off again. Then a positive review of his lyrics is broadcast on the radio and published in the newspaper, and the situation changes. The book is published after all, and Václav can finally go. At the railway station, he is meeting the ensemble which is already on its way back.
