Most of those involved think she's batty but it turns out there is a very good - and reliable - explanation
- DI Keenan has long had his sights set on arresting Neculai Stenga, a local Russian mobster who is heavily into the drugs and prostitution trade. Up to now, Keenan has been unable to get the evidence to nail him but things may have changed. Stenga's girlfriend, Louise Martin, approaches PC William Jackson, whom she grew up with, to tell him that Stenga may have been responsible for the recent death of a prostitute who was thrown from a third story window. She's also ready to testify, even though she knows that Stenga will not hesitate to kill her if he finds out what she has done. On the street, the police are on the lookout for a gang of 5 hoodies who have been mugging anyone with earphones. PCs Clifton and Slater arrest a young lad, Adam Tyler, out joyriding in a stolen car. Keenan's personal life becomes ever more complicated now that he's sleeping with Rachel Barker and his wife, who had asked him for a divorce, is sending different signals.
- With the information on the incoming shipment of crystal meth, the police finally manage to get the green light to stage a raid and arrest Neculai Stenga in the act. It all goes wrong however and it's obvious that Stenga has set them up. While most think their informant was involved in the set-up, Keenan posits another theory. Having located the storage site for a robbery ring, PC Kelly Cooper gives into temptation. PC Lucy Slater and Sgt. Macfadden are attacked by a disturbed man who takes them prisoner. Keenan's personal life is upside down when Rachel Barker makes a point of telling his wife Kate they slept together. With Kate starting her new job at the station, it makes for a difficult work atmosphere. DS French's wife comes to the station with bad news.
- The police are looking for Steven Price, the informant who was supposed to set up Nekolai Stenga for a drug bust. DS Luke French thinks that Price is probably dead but few agree with him, including DI Keenan. What they don't know is that there is a mole in the police force who tipped Stenga off about the raid. The mole is also out to find out in which safe house Keenan has put Stenga's girlfriend, Louise, another possible witness against the mobster. The police arrest Vinnie Dwyer, a house burglar who takes his infant nephew with him while out on the job. It turns out that the baby's mother, Anne-Marie Dwyer, and PC Robert Clifton have a considerable history together. Dwyer however also has some important information - he tells French there's a grass on the Force. Clifton also arrests a young woman who turns out to be a drug mule. Kate tell her husband, DI Keenan, that he's becoming infatuated with his case and shutting everything - and everyone - out.
- The investigation of Stenger continues and DI Keenan focuses on trying to find the mobster's ex-girlfriend Louise. She fled the police safe-house having lost faith in their ability to keep her safe after Stenger paid her a visit. Keenan begins to believe that Stenger is getting information from inside the station and that they have a bent copper on their hands; he shares that view with DCI Harry Hutchinson who sets his sights on PC William Jackson. PC Lucy Slater returns to work after her stay in hospital.The police participate in Operation Spider, the massive roundup of a suspected pedophile ring. Inspector Jenny Black's husband is one of those arrested but it turns out it's Jenny who has a secret. PCs Kelly Cooper and Neil Parker look into the case of a homeless man who is found badly beaten. It turns out he is married but has been living on the street since leaving his wife. Additional information indicates that his wife has hatched a scheme to make some money.
- DI Keenan and DS French continue their investigation into Stenga. They get a lead on locating Michael Martin who helped his sister, Stenga's girlfriend, get away from both the hoodlum and police protection. A well-respected solicitor Amina Akran has acid thrown in her face. The police initially suspect the girl's father who had disowned her after she became involved with someone he didn't approve of. PC Lucy Slater has a new boyfriend and is over the moon but PC Robert Clifton recognizes him as a drug dealer. Neil Parker gets the job in CID both he and Kelly Cooper applied for.
- PC Robert Clifton is in hospital recovering from his recent encounter with a murder suspect - who poured boiling water on his genitals. DS Luke French decides that his elderly mother will have to be put into a home. Two women show up at the station with one claiming the other's daughter has stolen her baby. PC William Jackson decides to return to work after having resigned when accused of being a bent copper. When DCI Hutchinson gets a call telling him that a local mobster - and chief rival to Nicolei Stenga - is getting a major drugs shipment, DI Keenan smells a rat. He subsequently learns that Harry's superior knows nothing of a possible intelligence leak in the Station. The police have a strange case of one man beating up the other but neither will satisfactorily explain what is going on.
- When a prostitute complains of rape, Alex has a tough time convincing Gene to take the case seriously. She is the lone voice in CID, and only the link to a recent murder victim makes Gene take the investigation further. The pursuit of the attacker takes them undercover to a fancy dress boat party, but has Alex's determination got the better of her, and is her effort to prove a point masking her judgement?
- When the body of a worker at a nuclear research centre disappears from the morgue, it smacks of conspiracy to Alex. Was Martin Kennedy killed because he had proof the government was testing neutron bombs? Gene is adamant that murder has simpler motives, and a link to Alex's mother gives him at least one suspect in an investigation that leads them onto dangerous territory.
- It's the week of the Royal Wedding, and CID is under pressure to keep the streets quiet. Realising she is stuck here for now, Alex is desperate for escapism. She goes on a date with a handsome Thatcherite and makes contact with her mother, Caroline. As bombs threaten to ruin Charles and Diana's big day, Gene needs Alex to stop being distracted and acknowledge this world has the power to hurt.
- When DI Alex Drake is shot and lands in 1981, she comes face-to-face with DCI Gene Hunt, the relic of old-fashioned policing she read about in Sam Tyler's reports. Alex thinks she is in a coma and needs Hunt's help to go after Layton, the man who shot her in 2008. She is confident she knows the rules of the game, but with no contact from the outside world Alex has to contend with a terrifying possibility.
- Simon Neary is a gangster Gene has wanted to nail for years. When the team discovers that his latest deal is to obtain guns, the case takes on another imperative for Alex. Is stopping the guns a way to stop herself getting shot in 2008? Gene is shocked by how far Alex is prepared to go, including trying to persuade Neary's young boyfriend to turn informant. Would she put a civilian at risk?
- Alex thinks she's close to death and has to keep her brain alive by solving the case: a raid at a Post Office. Gene believes the culprit is Chas Cale, a blagger he crossed swords with years ago. When Chas claims he's too ill and too old, Gene reflects on whether he too is over the hill. For once, Alex needs Gene to be strong for her. She fears she can't solve the case alone and is desperate not to die in 1981.
- Belle gets a bad online review from a customer, and feeling down, accepts a midnight encounter which turns awry. Ben advises her to try her luck at a normal relationship, but has to bail her out when the guy overstays his welcome.
- Belle is engaged by a couple who married very young and have been together for twenty years. To celebrate their anniversary they want to have sex with another couple but the brash young man Belle hires to make up the numbers lets her down and does not show. So Ben fills the breach and, despite his obvious feelings for Belle, is quite professional. However,Belle draws the line at their giving a repeat performance.
- Seeking to promote herself, Belle has aspirations to become a courtesan, the high end of high class call girls, but being whisked off to Scotland by a powerful director turns out not at all what she hoped it to be, and she misses Ben.
- Thousands of pounds collected for charity have been stolen, and the only lead is Gil Hollis, the man who raised it. Alex is sure that Gil knows more than he realises and that she can coax it out of him. But when Gene is humiliated on a TV appeal, he resorts to his 'fists first, questions later' method. Can Alex prevent Gene going off the rails just at the point when she needs to stay in control, and if she can't, will someone die?
- It's the biggest day of Alex's life: the day her parents were killed. She believes that if she can prevent this from happening she can leave the prison of 1981 and get back to her daughter Molly. With Gene waylaid by a station inspection, Alex needs to use every ounce of her strength and energy to stop the elements coming together, throw a cog into the wheel of fate, and finally return home.
