- Barbara Parsons is a recently hired employee with the company where Michael Blais has worked for nineteen years. Still, when a supervisor announces his retirement, Barbara applies for and is promoted to the position ahead of him.
- In a construction workers union local, consisting overwhelmingly of laborers with little or no education or opportunity for education, Ybarra has decided to start an informal program of literacy classes... reading and writing... meeting in the little meeting hall. The union's simple request for an after-hours teaching space at the construction site itself - which would be a great convenience to the laborer/students - is rejected by the superintendent. The union appeals to the company's administration. This is happening even as the union is faced with a sizable layoff, which will unfairly affect the older workers. Among those who will be affected is Alberto, who has been planning a first-time vacation to visit a brother, and hoping, too, to retrieve a guitar he has offered as security for a lone. The company administration, in the end, accedes to the space demand, even as the layoff is averted.
- The conflict between two men, Sanchez and Ybarra, vying for the presidency of the construction union local. Each is dedicated to the welfare of the union but each represents a different approach to the bargaining and to the contract itself. Complicating the issue for Sanchez is his close friend Martinez who has been caught stealing lumber from the construction site. Despite the more militant attitudes of Ybarra, it is Sanchez who wins the election.
- A local union is in contract negotiations with a construction company. Working conditions currently are very poor and the construction workers union is trying to achieve concessions with reference not only to pay but to the general conditions under which they are required to work. Rivera, an outspoken member of the union, and the union president, Sanchez, are the principal representatives in the negotiations. On an especially rainy day a close associate, Alberto, slips and falls from a ladder on a high level in the unfinished building where they are working and is badly injured. The company finally agrees to improvements in the contract and Rivera relays this information ultimately to Alberto in the hospital where he is recuperating.
