- Discovering the distinct habits of the sea birds located at the Gaspé coast in Québec, Canada.
- Far north near the Hudson's Bay, a pair of arctic foxes are busy caring for their new litter. Little Kala and her siblings must remain alert to the threat of a new predator: the red fox. Global warming is attracting the larger fox north. The film follows Kala over her first nine months of life, as she fights for her survival.
- Canada's many animal species have adapted to a wide range of habitats. Some live on the outskirts of cities, while others make their homes on the plains, in waters and wetlands, in mixed or boreal forests, or on the tundra. Those habitats change with the seasons, and the animals must adapt quickly to new climate conditions and the resulting changes in the food supply. For most species, the living is easiest in spring, summer, and fall. But throughout most of Canada, the cold reigns supreme for several months of the year. In the Arctic as in most Canadian provinces further south, winter means snow and ice - and lots of it. With the approach of the cold season, different species react in different ways. Some migrate southward while others adapt. It is on those that choose to stay that this 52-minute documentary will focus its attention.
- At the end of the summer, a moose finds herself alone in the forest. She has just lost her calf, probably to a bear. Now she must find a mate. Once pregnant again, she will endure months of bone-chilling winter until she delivers in the spring. She will fiercely protect her new calf from predators and teach him everything he needs to know to survive. And then suddenly one day, around his first birthday, she will sever their deep bond and push him toward independence just before she gives birth again. This is the story of a mother's journey: an inspirational tale of the struggle to survive and the wonder of life, set against a backdrop of stunning Canadian natural wilderness beauty.
- Each year, thick-billed murres by the millions return to the Canadian Arctic to breed. Their colonies are among the largest avian congregations in the world. For the first time, the life and death struggle and the unique behaviors of these little-known seabirds are presented. Remarkable footage captures gulls tearing brooding murres from the sheer cliffs, snatching their defenceless chicks and swallowing them whole on-the-fly. Murres locked in combat tumble 250 metres to the sea. The camera follows as they continue to battle below the surface. Chicks, before knowing how to fly, leap to the sea. The male encourages his chick and trails it closely as losing each other results in a fatal end. Local Inuit remain true to their ancestral traditions and take advantage of the abundance. The film-makers's understanding of the rhythms of nature in the north is rendered by spectacular images of grace and beauty.
- The red fox has attained the greatest geographical distribution of any member of the canidae family. Many of us live very close to a fox's territory without realizing it. Yet it is rare to catch even a fleeting glimpse of this secretive animal crossing a field or running along the edge of a wood. Filmed in the heart of the boreal forest on Quebec's Anticosti Island, this documentary gives us an inside look at the life of the red fox. After hundreds of hours of patient observation, we have captured the essence of this small dog-like animal on film. Focusing on the daily life of a young family of foxes, we have recorded striking images of the behaviour patterns that have allowed this species to thrive. From the formation of a couple to the birth, the first tentative steps, and the raising of their young, we have created an up-close look at their hunting methods, their territorial battles, and the games and escapades of their kits near the den until they are finally ready to strike out on their own. Throughout the four seasons, in the midst of all the wild creatures that inhabit the boreal forest, we invite you to discover THE RED FOX.
- Highlighting the natural history of Anticosti Island in all its splendour.
