  • The AFI Life Achievement Award is considered the highest career achievement honor in Hollywood. It has been given since 1973.
  • The event was originally intended to be held in Washington, DC so that the President could attend. However, when award creator George Stevens Jr. was informed that President Richard Nixon was planning a trip to Los Angeles, the location of the initial event in 1973 was changed to accommodate his schedule.

  • The award is named in honor of William Fadiman, a distinguished and longtime story editor at Warner Bros. and MGM, and a member of the AFI faculty from 1974-1982.
