- In addition to public voting, fans logging onto MTV.com were able to write in their nominee picks in four new categories including "Favorite Line", "Best Cameo", "Best Music Moment" and "Best Dressed". Nominees for these new categories were announced on May 23rd when on-line voting began and could be voted for up to the show.
2003
- The category Best Transatlantic Breakthrough is introduced, which is voted on by the MTV Viewers in the UK and Ireland.
2005
- The categories Best Video Game Based on a Movie and Best Action Sequence are announced pre-show.
2007
- The Dirtiest Mouth Moment segment is pre-taped and airs while the live broadcast.
