- DirectorDavid LynchStarsNaomi WattsLaura HarringJustin TherouxAfter a car wreck on Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesiac, she and a Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality. This is the girl
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKarolina GruszkaKrzysztof MajchrzakGrace ZabriskieAs an actress begins to adopt the persona of her character in a film, her world becomes nightmarish and surreal."This is the woman"
- DirectorAlain ResnaisStarsDelphine SeyrigGiorgio AlbertazziSacha PitoëffIn a strange and isolated chateau, a man becomes acquainted with a woman and insists that they have met before. The secret is all in the title... I guess. An immensely sad, hypnotic, haunting movie about the (male) human condition
- DirectorLuis BuñuelStarsSilvia PinalJacqueline AndereEnrique RambalThe guests at an upper-class dinner party find themselves unable to leave.Beyond surrealism; the inexpressible, most underrated Buñuel
Tie with "Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie" (1972)
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068361/) - DirectorLouis MalleStarsCatherine DemongeotPhilippe NoiretHubert DeschampsWith her mother away for the weekend, a brash and precocious ten-year-old country girl sets out to explore Paris during a Métro strike under her uncle's not-so-watchful eye. But can a little girl cause so much chaos in the city centre? In my opinion, the good part of the "Nouvelle Vague" starts and ends here. This movie is so different from any other French new-wave movies, that it hardly fits in the category; hence I could say I don't really like "nouvelle vague" movies in general, but i just love this one. As the protagonist would say: "Nouvelle vague mon c...!"
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together. This is a romance... between me and the movie. The right adjective here is: enchanting. And I've used that like 3 times in my life=)
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRod TaylorTippi HedrenJessica TandyA wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.I could almost swap my favorite movies list for his filmography... So The Birds is here to represent ALL of Hitchcock; this title in part. is much more than a "thriller" so as Hitch was much more than "The Master of Suspense"... Guess someone else noticed that?
- DirectorJean VigoStarsDita ParloJean DastéGilles MargaritisNewly married couple Juliette and a ship captain Jean struggle through marriage as they travel on the L'atalante along with the captain's first mate Le père Jules and a cabin boy.The most rare case where I just don't know why... But i DO love it!
- DirectorPeter BogdanovichStarsRyan O'NealTatum O'NealMadeline KahnDuring the Great Depression, a con man finds himself saddled with a young girl who may or may not be his daughter, and the two forge an unlikely partnership.Probably the movie I've seen more times in my life.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.Again, I'd like to put all the Hitchcock's here, but this one is way more than a motion picture.
- DirectorAleksandr SokurovStarsSergey DreydenMariya KuznetsovaLeonid MozgovoyA 19th century French aristocrat, notorious for his scathing memoirs about life in Russia, travels through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and encounters historical figures from the last 200+ years. One of the few great movies of the XXI century. The steadycam is the real dream machine.
- DirectorMatthew BarneyStarsRichard SerraMatthew BarneyAimee MullinsThe third film of a five-part art-installation epic -- it's part-zombie movie, part-gangster film. The opposite of "easy" and IMO the best one of Barney's Cremaster Cycle; a masonic musical nightmare.
- DirectorJacques TatiStarsJacques TatiNathalie PascaudMicheline RollaMonsieur Hulot comes to a beachside hotel for a vacation and accidentally, but good-naturedly, causes havoc.Weird nostalgic almost silent French B/W comedy with a comedy genius; sweet precious movie
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMatt DillonMickey RourkeDiane LaneAbsent-minded street thug Rusty James struggles to live up to his legendary older brother's reputation, and longs for the days of gang warfare.Coppola's neo-expressionism is amazing, this movie isn't "arty", it is Art indeed!
- DirectorJean CocteauRené ClémentStarsJean MaraisJosette DayMila ParélyA beautiful young woman takes her father's place as the prisoner of a mysterious beast, who wishes to marry her.Cocteau tried to put some magic in it. And he fully succedeed.
- DirectorOrson WellesStarsCharlton HestonOrson WellesJanet LeighA stark, perverse story of murder, kidnapping and police corruption in a Mexican border town. The most electrifying ouverture and the most unpleasant finale; pure cinema in the middle.
- DirectorShaun MonsonStarsJoaquin PhoenixUsing hidden cameras and never-before-seen footage, Earthlings chronicles the day-to-day practices of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. The only documentary in my list is Hell on Earth. The only documentary I will never, NEVER see again, and possibly the most important ever shot. Just watch it, if you dare... and think about it.
- DirectorLawrence KasdanStarsWilliam HurtKathleen TurnerRichard CrennaDuring an extreme heatwave, a beautiful Florida woman and a seedy lawyer engage in an affair while plotting the murder of her rich husband. This movie should be an "hommage" to the noir cinema; to me it is the finest piece of it. Dreamlike, elegant and... just Hot!
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsMarcello MastroianniAnna KarinaBernard BlierA man faces a trial for murder. The court is biased because of his personal qualities.A "minor" Visconti happens to be the title of one of my favourite books ever; from the novel by Albert Camus, a VERY underrated movie with Marcello Mastroianni as the perfect "stranger".
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJonathan PryceKim GreistRobert De NiroA bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.I love what Gilliam has done before this one, and some of what he's done after... But this movie is something else.
- DirectorRoy AnderssonStarsElisabeth HelanderJörgen NohallJan WikbladhYou, the Living is a film about humankind, its greatness and its baseness, joy and sorrow, its self-confidence and anxiety, its desire to love and be loved. All I could say about it was "My goodness!" --
You can guess why this is one floor up Sånger från andra våningen!
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120263/) - DirectorFederico FelliniStarsMartin PotterHiram KellerMax BornA series of disjointed mythical tales set in first-century Rome.Extremely artistic, almost lysergic movie.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsMelanie LynskeyKate WinsletSarah PeirseTwo teenage girls share a unique bond; their parents, concerned that the friendship is too intense, separate them, and the girls take revenge.Tremendously beautiful movie, with amazing actresses, and Peter Jackson at his very best.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.I know why I like this "horror flick" so much; I don't know if that's the same reason why so many people like it... But, who cares? I just like it!
- DirectorHiromasa YonebayashiStarsBridgit MendlerAmy PoehlerWill ArnettThe Clock family are four-inch-tall people who live anonymously in another family's residence, borrowing simple items to make their home. Life changes for the Clocks when their teenage daughter Arrietty is discovered.A great movie about the little people, and a new star in the universe of animation from Ghibli Studio
- DirectorLuc JacquetStarsBertille Noël-BruneauIsabelle CarréThomas LalibertéIt has been described as both a nature documentary and a "fairy tale" look at the story of young girl and her friendship with a fox.It has been described as both a nature documentary and a "fairy tale"; this movie can make you think of how "nature" is close to the kingdom of "fairy tales"... and that we should live right there
- DirectorClaude NuridsanyMarie PérennouStarsKristin Scott ThomasJacques PerrinA documentary on insect life in meadows and ponds. The same as above, but no mammals or fiction here
- DirectorAlain ResnaisStarsSabine AzémaPierre ArditiPeter HudsonAn examination of the possible consequences of a certain event.I'd give 9 stars to the first and only 8 to the latter, but they come together, and I'm happy with it
- DirectorKarel ZemanStarsLubor TokosArnost NavrátilMiroslav HolubAn evil millionaire named Artigas plans to use a super-explosive device to conquer the world from his headquarters inside an enormous volcano."The Fabulous World of Jules Verne" in one of the best Zeman's "woodcut" movie
- DirectorPeter JosephStarsChogyam TrungpaJordan MaxwellGeorge CarlinMythology and belief in society today, presenting uncommon perspectives of common cultural issues. This one could be the greatest movie ever; but it's just an audio-visual bunch of "inconvenient truths" that nobody would ever put in a "real movie", so... Zeitgeist is the greatest bunch of "inconvenient truths" ever, too bad it will never be a "real movie".
