- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.I've already mentioned this movie in two lists, but I shall mention it again. This is the film that inspired my movie making career; my love of body horror; and introduced me to my favourite director, David Cronenberg. This movie is scary, dramatic, and still quite unique. To be honest, I'm no fan of Jeff Goldblum; but he's actually quite good in this as well. Gina Davis is always great though.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsJack NanceCharlotte StewartAllen JosephHenry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child. This is the first movie to truly dig under my skin and claw like an insane cat. It resembles one of my nightmares in visuals and sound. A genuinely freaky experience, and one of the few Lynch films that I truly love love loved, though I do like a couple of his other films.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw. This is one of my all time favourites, and one of the first horror movies I saw that genuinely scared me. It was also very influential for a short film my wife & I made a few years back, entitled 剃刀と放火 (kamisori to houka, lit. "Razor and Arson.") and has left a huge impact on my love of horror films.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyo IshibashiEihi ShiinaTetsu SawakiA widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.It ALWAYS pains me to put this on a list of "horror" films. In fact, it also pains me that they have to show as much as they do on the cover. In truth - this isn't a horror movie so much as it is a tragic romantic drama. It is VERY strong in that regard, it just so happens that the last 40 minutes are some of the most horrifying things ever committed to film.
Asami is a genuinely tragic and sad character though, and despite the terrible things she does to Aoyama and some others in this film her story is sad and sympathetic, and this is a movie that is a fantastic mix of emotional disturbance and fear. Takashi Miike isn't the worlds greatest director, but he was able to transcend his talents and make one hell of a movie with this one. - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.John Carpenter's "The Thing" is, in my opinion, his best film. Yes - better than "Halloween." The Thing not only deserves credit for being the rare remake that is BETTER than its predecessor (Even though the original ain't bad for its time.) and it also deserves credit for a film that uses lots of gore, yet the gore doesn't cheapen it.
I just feel that so many movies cheapen themselves with gore, as really gory films often end up being funny to me. Yet the gore in "The Thing" and the incredible special effects are genuinely stomach churning and terrifying. Combine the disturbing imagery with tons of suspense based on trust and isolation in a frozen hell, and you have a masterpiece. - DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life. What can I say about this film that hasn't already been said a thousand times? This was probably the only slasher movie since the original "Halloween" to have any brains. Freddy was such a refreshing character; he talked, he did more than chase topless women at the speed of a snail, and he was simultaneously funny and terrifying.
This film is one of my favourites, and I love to watch it. It is just a shame that the remake had to PISS ME OFF SO MUCH. I didn't expect the remake to be that good, but JESUS CHRIST it completely ruined Freddy's character and made him the wrong kind of creepy. At least the original will always live on in my heart. - DirectorClive BarkerStarsAndrew RobinsonClare HigginsAshley LaurenceA woman discovers the newly resurrected, partially formed, body of her brother-in-law and lover. She starts killing for him to revitalize his body and escape the demonic beings that are pursuing him after he escaped their underworld.Like "The Thing," Hellraiser manages to be one of the few ultra-gory horror movies that isn't cheapened by the gore. The gore here is unsettling, but truthfully the reason Hellraiser makes this list is because of its creator: Clive Barker.
Sadly, Barker hasn't been well represented on screen; but Hellraiser is one of the exceptions. Barker's imagination is on show in this picture, and his deranged art-work comes to life and adds an extra-layer of creepy to this classic 80s flick. I will admit though... Pin-Head isn't my favourite cenobite. My favourite would be Chatterbox, since he's the one that frightened me the most. Teeth are a no-no for me in horror flicks. - DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJames WoodsDebbie HarrySonja SmitsA programmer at a Toronto TV station that specializes in adult entertainment searches for the producers of a dangerous and bizarre broadcast.Another from my favourite director, David Cronenberg! This is easily where he hit his stride, and this is one creepy flick. I absolutely love the story and idea behind this film, and while there are a few flaws; it is very well executed overall and the atmosphere is downright chilling.
- DirectorGeorge SluizerStarsBernard-Pierre DonnadieuGene BervoetsJohanna ter SteegeRex and Saskia, a young couple in love, are on vacation. They stop at a busy service station and Saskia is abducted. After three years and no sign of Saskia, Rex begins receiving letters from the abductor. In truth, The Vanishing is more of a thriller than it is a horror movie. however - the movie has such a shocking and disturbing element to it that it comes out as a genuinely horrifying movie. When I first saw it, my jaw was on the floor and I was flinching a little. It has gone on to be one of my all time favourites, it is just a shame that the director managed to ruin his own movie with that AWFUL American Remake.
- DirectorAdrian LyneStarsTim RobbinsElizabeth PeñaDanny AielloMourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death. This movie always gives me the heebie-jeebies. This is both a genuinely scary horror film, as well as a mysterious and well executed dramatic thriller. It is an unending nightmare, and one of my all time favourite films.
- DirectorJee-woon KimStarsLim Soo-jungYum Jung-ahKim Kap-suAfter being institutionalized in a mental hospital, Su-mi reunites with her sister, Su-yeon, and they return to live at their country home. But strange events plague the house, leading to surprising revelations and a shocking conclusion.I'm mixed on Asian Horror, but if there is an Asian horror that truly managed to freak the living day-lights out of me - it would be the eerie Korean flick, "A Tale of Two Sisters." The movie is quite well made and has a very picturesque look, and comes off very much a dark and frightening fairy tale; and that fits, seeing as this was based on an old and very dark Korean fairy tale.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeremy IronsGeneviève BujoldHeidi von PalleskeTwin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.Twins (Dead Ringers) is yet ANOTHER David Cronenberg. Yet this is an oddity even by his standards. It isn't as bombastic or twisted as VideoDrome or The Fly, but it is still chilling to the bone and extremely bizarre. This one relies more on psychological thrills and doesn't use his trademark body-horror (Save for one scene involving feasting on an umbilical cord) but it still succeeds as a thriller-chiller, thanks to taught directing and an absolutely fantastic turn from Jeremy Irons.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.Thank you Frank Darabont, for actually managing to adapt one of Stephen King's supernatural horrors and not making it suck! In fact, thanks to the horrific and tragic ending; this manages to be better than the original novella. This was a great horror flick and quite a pleasant surprise for me.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. This is a slick, disturbing, and well-shot thriller. The ending still gives me the chills, and while I may not be a fan of Brad Pitt; he's balanced out by Morgan Freeman's excellent performance and to be fair, Pitt didn't bother me that much here. This is still a very visually impressive picture, and helped establish David Fincher as one of the most stylish and inventive thriller directors in recent days.
- DirectorTod BrowningKarl FreundStarsBela LugosiHelen ChandlerDavid MannersTransylvanian vampire Count Dracula bends a naive real estate agent to his will, then takes up residence at a London estate where he sleeps in his coffin by day and searches for potential victims by night.Long live Bela Lugosi! I am a huge fan of the classic novel Dracula, and I am a huge fan of Universal Monster movies. How can you go wrong with this one? Or the next one for that matter...
- DirectorJames WhaleStarsColin CliveMae ClarkeBoris KarloffDr Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with assembling a living being from parts of several exhumed corpses.Yeah, you probably saw this one coming after the lead-out in the last paragraph. This truly is a classic though, and one of the greatest monster films of all time; just like Dracula.
- DirectorJames WanStarsCary ElwesLeigh WhannellDanny GloverTwo strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, and soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer.Let's ignore what this series has become and look back at what it was when it began: Intense, suspenseful, and scary as hell. This little indie shocker came out of nowhere and gave me the chills. While "Saw II" was an okay sit, it didn't really need a sequel and I can barely recognize what made me love this film so much in any of its increasingly lame sequels.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Another classic. I almost put "Aliens" on here, because I like many people see it as superior; but to be honest, "Aliens" isn't a horror movie so much as it is an action flick, but 'Alien' is indeed a genuine fright show. It hasn't aged a bit and is still one of the most cutting edge and cool monster flicks of its era.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.I'll admit -as cool as zombies are, they have rarely ever scared me. Then along came "28 Days Later" - the first (And one of the only) zombie movies to ever genuinely scare me. This movie is tense and disturbing, and Danny Boyle lends some absolutely fantastic direction that helps make it so bloody memorable.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsBelén RuedaFernando CayoRoger PríncepA woman brings her family back to her childhood home, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend. What a creepy film. The whole movie is filled with atmosphere and tight direction, but like many other films on the list - it was the ending (As well as a surprisingly gruesome car accident) that helped it land this list. This movie managed to freak me out, and best of all it took me by surprise. I had no expectations and just went to see it on a lark.
