My most anticipated movies of 2011.

by thefonz750 | created - 02 Jan 2011 | updated - 07 Jan 2011 | Public

These are the movies that I am most looking forward to in 2011. They may be in various stages of production, but they will all be released sometime in 2011. This, of course, can always change. If you feel that I have missed a good one, please let me know. Thanks. Enjoy.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone

Votes: 252,708 | Gross: $36.39M

Hot girls kicking ass in a fantastical world headed by Zack Snyder? Sign me up.

2. Thor (2011)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Fantasy

57 Metascore

The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston

Votes: 899,921 | Gross: $181.03M

Should be a big year for Chris Hemsworth, who plays the title character, Thor in this darker take of the Norse god. Kenneth Branagh, who is no stranger to the gothic theme, goes behind the camera in this one.

3. Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

A spaceship arrives in 1873 Arizona to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. All that stands in their way: a posse of cowboys and natives.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Abigail Spencer

Votes: 232,444 | Gross: $100.24M

Has the potential to be one of the biggest hits in 2011. Daniel Craig leads an all-star cast that includes Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, and Sam Rockwell. With Joh Favreau directing and Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard as executive producer and producer, respectively, this seems like it can't miss. We will see.

4. The Hangover Part II (2011)

R | 102 min | Comedy

44 Metascore

Two years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu's wedding. Stu's plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.

Director: Todd Phillips | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha

Votes: 534,452 | Gross: $254.46M

The sequel to one of the funniest movies ever, with all of the original cast returning. Liam Neeson will provide a great cameo, I'm sure, though it would have been interesting to see how Mel would have played out.

5. Paul (2011)

R | 104 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

Two English comic book geeks traveling across the U.S. encounter an alien outside Area 51.

Director: Greg Mottola | Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Mia Stallard

Votes: 266,044 | Gross: $37.41M

First off, let me say that Simon Pegg's brand of humor is top notch. I have loved almost everything he has done to date. That being said, this pick might be a little biased.

6. Limitless (I) (2011)

PG-13 | 105 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller

59 Metascore

A mysterious pill that enables the user to access 100% of his brain's abilities transforms a struggling writer into a financial wizard, but it also puts him in a new world with many dangers.

Director: Neil Burger | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Anna Friel, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro

Votes: 612,214 | Gross: $79.25M

I absolutely love the premise here. A failing writer takes a pill that allows him to become the "perfect" version of himself. Bradley Cooper has shown that he can be a strong presence on-screen and with the supporting cast in this one, I'm going to call this one an early hit. It getting a week jump on Sucker Punch won't hurt, either.

7. Your Highness (2011)

R | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

31 Metascore

When Prince Fabious's bride is kidnapped, he goes on a quest to rescue her... accompanied by his lazy useless brother Thadeous.

Director: David Gordon Green | Stars: Danny McBride, Natalie Portman, James Franco, Rasmus Hardiker

Votes: 104,423 | Gross: $21.60M

If Pineapple Express is any indication of how good this movie will be, then it will be great, hilarious fun. James Franco's ability to own any and every role should be enough to go see this if nothing else about it piques your interest. Sports a great supporting cast, as well.

8. Super 8 (2011)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

During the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Elle Fanning, AJ Michalka, Kyle Chandler, Joel Courtney

Votes: 367,454 | Gross: $127.00M

A monster movie written and directed by J.J. Abrams. Should be, at the very least, entertaining and fun.

9. Red Riding Hood (2011)

PG-13 | 100 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

29 Metascore

Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure.

Director: Catherine Hardwicke | Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Lukas Haas, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke

Votes: 115,788 | Gross: $37.66M

A dark version of the children's tale that involves werewolves and human sacrifice. Sounds pretty awesome, actually.

10. I Am Number Four (2011)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

36 Metascore

Aliens and their Guardians are hiding on Earth from intergalactic bounty hunters. They can only be killed in numerical order, and Number Four is next on the list. This is his story.

Director: D.J. Caruso | Stars: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Teresa Palmer

Votes: 246,265 | Gross: $55.10M

As a fanboy of the supernatural, superpowers, and such, I have to say I am very excited about the potential of this movie. I also felt the same way about Push and Jumper, though...........

11. Apollo 18 (2011)

PG-13 | 86 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

24 Metascore

Decades-old found footage from NASA's abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where three American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.

Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego | Stars: Warren Christie, Lloyd Owen, Ryan Robbins, Michael Kopsa

Votes: 57,958 | Gross: $17.69M

I honestly don't know much about this one, but the idea sounds very interesting.

12. Priest (2011)

PG-13 | 87 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror

41 Metascore

A warrior priest disobeys church law to track down a pact of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Director: Scott Stewart | Stars: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban

Votes: 124,130 | Gross: $29.14M

Paul Bettany goes for it again this year, only this time it's vampires. I'm gonna go ahead and give this one a chance since the cast is amazing and the story seems to be a lot deeper than Legion could have dreamed of being. I am not familiar with the comic at all, though.

13. Hanna (2011)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

65 Metascore

A sixteen-year-old girl who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.

Director: Joe Wright | Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Vicky Krieps

Votes: 206,826 | Gross: $40.26M

This year's "Kick-Ass"?

14. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

45 Metascore

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Director: Rob Marshall | Stars: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Votes: 563,944 | Gross: $241.06M

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Geoffrey Rush as Barbosa. They are both phenomenal at what they do. Introducing Penelope Cruz into the series was a good idea. Her sassiness will give it some much needed spice. This should be a good one.

15. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

PG-13 | 130 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

85 Metascore

Harry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon

Votes: 948,124 | Gross: $381.01M

Have yet to see Part 1. I normally wait for the Blu-Ray on the Harry Potter movies, but I might make an exception with this one.

16. Fast Five (2011)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

66 Metascore

Dominic Toretto and his crew of street racers plan a massive heist to buy their freedom while in the sights of a powerful Brazilian drug lord and a dangerous federal agent.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster

Votes: 407,034 | Gross: $209.84M

Vin Diesel and The Rock. Nuff Said.

17. Red State (2011)

50 Metascore

Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.

Director: Kevin Smith | Stars: Michael Parks, Melissa Leo, John Goodman, Michael Angarano

Votes: 67,175 | Gross: $1.10M

Kevin Smith dips his toes into the horror genre. The trailer definitely got my attention.

18. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

72 Metascore

Five college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz

Votes: 450,530 | Gross: $42.07M

I've always wanted to know what Evil Dead would be like if Joss Whedon directed it instead of Sam Raimi.

19. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

73 Metascore

The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name.

Director: Brad Bird | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton

Votes: 528,307 | Gross: $209.40M

Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in this fourth MI movie. It is director Brad Bird's first live-action movie, but with J.J. Abrams involved and the cast behind this movie, I'm pretty sure it will be an end-of-the-year hit.

20. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

PG-13 | 105 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

A substance designed to help the brain repair itself gives advanced intelligence to a chimpanzee who leads an ape uprising.

Director: Rupert Wyatt | Stars: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto, Karin Konoval

Votes: 558,606 | Gross: $176.76M

Andy Serkis will be doing his motion-capture thing as the ape, Caesar, in this origin story. Serkis played the creature, Gollum, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Expect good things out of James Franco in this one, as well.

21. Horrible Bosses (2011)

R | 98 min | Comedy, Crime

57 Metascore

Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness.

Director: Seth Gordon | Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Steve Wiebe

Votes: 469,620 | Gross: $117.54M

Jason Bateman is great on his own. Charlie Day is halarious all the time. Can't wait to see how they do together. My bet is that as long as the story isn't crap, it should be pretty funny.

22. X: First Class (2011)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon

Votes: 723,460 | Gross: $146.41M

The beginning of the "maybe" superhero movies on my list. Will probably end up seeing all of them at the theater.

23. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Steve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.

Director: Joe Johnston | Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell

Votes: 896,561 | Gross: $176.65M

Let's see if the Human Torch can handle the pressure of being the de facto leader of The Avengers.

24. Green Lantern (2011)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

39 Metascore

Reckless test pilot Hal Jordan is granted an alien ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers that inducts him into an intergalactic police force, the Green Lantern Corps.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong

Votes: 296,076 | Gross: $116.60M

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

39 Metascore

Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.

Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz

Votes: 164,678 | Gross: $98.78M

I want to see this one, but I might just wait for the Blu-Ray.

26. Fright Night (2011)

R | 106 min | Action, Comedy, Drama

64 Metascore

"Fright Night" - A new neighbor moves in next to Charley, who discovers that he is an ancient vampire who preys on the community. Can he save his neighborhood from the creature with the help of the famous "vampire killer", Peter Vincent?

Director: Craig Gillespie | Stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette

Votes: 113,091 | Gross: $18.30M

As this was one of my favorite vampire movies growing up, I'm a little apprehensive to put this here. Remakes are very hit or miss and it worries me that the memories I have of the original will be tarnished if this film is not done correctly. I am very interested, though, to see how Colin Farrell handles being the vampire antagonist, Jerry Dandridge.

27. Conan the Barbarian (2011)

R | 113 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

36 Metascore

A vengeful barbarian warrior sets off to get his revenge on the evil warlord who attacked his village and murdered his father when he was a boy.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang

Votes: 102,704 | Gross: $21.30M

This is just asking for trouble. There is only one Conan, and he ran for office. Unless it looks amazing, I will probably wait for Netflix on this one.

28. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

PG-13 | 154 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

42 Metascore

The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets.

Director: Michael Bay | Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel

Votes: 431,951 | Gross: $352.39M

Should be pretty easy to beat the crap-fest that was Revenge of the Fallen. Without super-hot Megan Fox to deter from the horrible story, I really can't see this being any better.

29. The Tree of Life (2011)

PG-13 | 139 min | Drama, Fantasy

85 Metascore

The story of a family in Waco, Texas in 1956. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence and struggles with his parents' conflicting teachings.

Director: Terrence Malick | Stars: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken

Votes: 184,091 | Gross: $13.30M

Brad Pitt and Sean Penn head up this one. I am unfamiliar with the story but I'm sure they will do a great job, as they always do.

30. Drive Angry (2011)

R | 104 min | Action, Comedy, Fantasy

44 Metascore

A vengeful father escapes from hell and chases after the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter.

Director: Patrick Lussier | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke

Votes: 103,398 | Gross: $10.71M

Will see if this one will revive Nic Cage's career. Not likely, though.
