Ranking the 11 Star Wars Films
Where would this world be without the universe that George Lucas created, which we all call Star Wars. To many people, like myself, Star Wars is somewhat kind of like a a religion. It has more depth and story, then one would ever imagine. I was shown Star Wars at a young age, and I was just simply watching and waiting for its epic moments, but not really following the characters and the plot. I watch Star Wars these days, not just for those epic moments that I would anticipate wanting to see when I was a young-ling, but more importantly, for its lengthy and amazing story, the depth we go into for trying to understand its many, but intriguing characters and their mental and psychological states, and for the many, and many themes and messages found in the Star Wars film saga.

This is the movie that started it all, and one that many would consider it to be the series best episode, and as well as one of the best movies ever. The introduction of the many Star Wars characters, that are so commonly imitated and brought-up, are introduced at the perfect pace in the movie, so that we can come to know each one little-by-little. What separates this movie from all other sci-fi movies, are its bold and memorable characters, which includes: the menacing and powerful Darth Vader, the arrogant and rude Han Solo, the young and naive Luke Sywalker, the omniscient old-man Ben "Obi-Wan" Kenobi, the suave and confident Princess Leia, and then finally the non-human characters; Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO. *SPOILER ALERT!* I might be on a lone island with this one, but I never really liked how in the end Skywalker is flying in the X-Wing to conclude the movie. I don't know why, but that piloting stuff in Star Wars doesn't seem to sync well with as other parts in the Star Wars saga. I've always found the concluding flying space battle in the end to be only alright, but not good. It's not my cup of tea.
*I've updated it to the number one spot but don't want to change and revise my original commentary because I'm avoiding having to confront something I wrote in high school. - DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.My rating - 8/10
The film has the reputation and recognition as not only the darkest movie of the original trilogy, but contending with "Episode 3" as possibly the darkest movie in the entire saga. The movie is covered in a thick coat of darkness, with an emptiness for ignorant optimism in the situations that the characters here are forced upon. The consumption of the darkness around them, and with no way of escaping the hurt and pain the characters experience in the movie, ignites, not just the movie's major characters, but us as the viewer, to have the feelings of hopelessness, despair, betrayal, and fear. This movie respects the sci-fi genre, but it's not so much as a "science-fiction" film, but rather a different look on the classic theme of "good vs. bad," but where in Star Wars lore, it's about "The Light Side of the Force versus The Dark Side of the Force." It showcases how it is so easy for the two parties to interweave with one another, which then leaves the characters to contemplate whether they truly are on the "good side" of the conflict. This then leaves them to question if their actions that they thought were 'good' and 'right' before, was actually the noble act to make or not. By the film's end, both sides realize how much they have in common with the opposing side than they could have ever imagined, and this is because that they must interact and negotiate face-to-face with the "enemy" to live another day. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorThree years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy. My rating - 7.5/10
In my opinion, George Lucas almost completely redeemed himself from the two polarized prequels with this movie. The second half of the movie, is done very well. The character development and transitioning of Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader is done so subtlety and as gradually the movie goes on. The manipulation by Chancellor Palpatine to bring the total anger out of Skywalker is very dark, which makes it feel much more authentic. On a side note from its main overall plot, there are many interesting characters introduced in the movie, and it has some real great visuals. The direction by George Lucas, just exactly like the first two, is one big mess because there are moments in it where the look of the movie left me wondering why he decided to film it as such. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsEwan McGregorLiam NeesonNatalie PortmanTwo Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory. My rating - 7/10
To lay out the honest truth, my higher-than-most rating for the movie may be the nostalgia speaking because it was the first Star Wars film I had ever seen. It started my obsession that I had with Star Wars at a real young age. From the pod-racing, then to the moments with Watto, and then finally to the epic Darth Maul fight at the end, it just left behind many memories for me. The dialogue in the movie is very poorly written by Star Wars creator George Lucas, and it can sound a little cringe-worthy at times. In my opinion, it's a better movie than people give it credit for, but then again, that could just be the nostalgia speaking. - DirectorRichard MarquandStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side.My rating - 6.5/10
I really admired this conclusion to the Star Wars saga. We witness as the relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia come to fruition, syncing well with the rest of the movie. It has one of my most favorite movie endings of all time because it feels so authentic, and it is so understandable with the five movies before it setting up for this climactic moment. *SPOILER ALERT!* The prophecy foretelling Anakin Skywalker as the "chosen one," is fulfilled in the ending when he decides to kill the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, so to save his son, Luke, from dying at the hands of Darth Sidious, and then finally, thus, saving everyone. The film distances itself from the real dark tone set in "Episode 5." The movie chooses to go on the light-heart route, with more gimmicky moments in this movie than the two episodes prior to this one combined, which really does hurt the movie. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorTen years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.My rating - 6/10
This is the only Star Wars film that I have a hard time finishing. I just found this film to be too slow, and with a story that's a bit scattered-around and shaky. Their was little-to-none character development, and it was insignificant to the story. The clone battle at the end of the movie saves this movie from an even lower rating. - DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. My rating - 5/10
