Most Depressing Movies I Have Seen
READ THIS FIRST!!! (***SPOILER ALERT***) The first nine movies on this list are truly depressing, through and through. The next five, though, have bittersweet, mildly happy endings. Something good came from them.
And then, there's #15. That one had an incredibly depressing moment in the deleted scenes that kinda changed the movie for me.
#16 also deserves an asterisk.

- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.Last chance. ***SPOILER ALERT***
The deleted scene mentioned above shows Kirsten Dunst, after she'd discovered that she had also had her memory erased following an affair with her boss (the doctor who erases memories). She was listening to an audio recording of herself, discussing with him the reasons why she needed to have her memory erased. In the tape, as she was crying and blubbering, the doctor told her that getting rid of the baby was the right thing to do. And then, the real Kirsten Dunst, there in the room, began crying as well.
Maybe the scene was a little too heavy for the rest of the movie, and out of place for a tertiary character. And I suppose that's why it didn't make the final cut. But it was too powerful to be ignored. I guess the deleted scenes is a good place for it. - DirectorGaspar NoéStarsMonica BellucciVincent CasselAlbert DupontelEvents over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.Since the movie plays out in reverse order, it's hard to say it had a sad "ending." But it's probably the most brutally honest movie I've ever seen, focusing perhaps too long and too unflichingly on the ugliest aspects of human nature.
- DirectorLynne RamsayStarsTilda SwintonJohn C. ReillyEzra MillerKevin's mother struggles to love her strange child despite the increasingly dangerous things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.
