- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.Ambitious and well acted, also about as good as a movie about Facebook could be. But, come on the movie was overly praised. I mean, critics even called the musical score in-genius when it's one note and nowhere near as good as Inception's score.
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.A well made and emotional last film, but I enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled a lot more. If any of the series deserved an Oscar, well it's the first two. But the Best Animation Oscar wasn't around when they were made.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstAlfred MolinaPeter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius.Every Marvel film that comes out now, gets compared to Spider-Man 2 by Roger Ebert. To him nothing else measures up that they do. Yes, the film has it's moments, but it takes forever for the film to get to them.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsQuinton AaronSandra BullockTim McGrawThe story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.Sandra Bullock gives a..."give me an Oscar" performance and she got one. Meaning, it's one of those Oscar winning performances where the actor is desperately trying to get one with an obvious attempt. The movie is a 3 star film, wasn't worthy of being nominated for Best Picture.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsTom CruiseTim RobbinsKelly McGillisAs students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.Pretty boys compete to see who the best pilot is, to a great soundtrack.
- DirectorPaul HaggisStarsDon CheadleSandra BullockThandiwe NewtonLos Angeles citizens with vastly separate lives collide in interweaving stories of race, loss and redemption.A 3 star film if anything, not Best Picture worthy.
- DirectorJonathan DaytonValerie FarisStarsSteve CarellToni ColletteGreg KinnearA family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.Eddie Murphy lost to Alan Arkin for Best Supporting.....dead body in a trunk. The film is touching and funny, but not as special as it has been called.
- DirectorCatherine HardwickeStarsKristen StewartRobert PattinsonBilly BurkeWhen Bella Swan moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire.Critics loathed it, girls love it. Neither of them are right though, it's just ok. But MTV turning their award show into the Twilight Awards is heart-breaking to me. I mean the MTV movie Awards used to be funny with great parody clips and not rated PG for kids.
Now it's all about, will Robert Petterson kiss Kristen Stewart or will she run away from his bad breath once again ? Plus Twilight films winning Best Movie 3 years in a row ? - DirectorJames CameronStarsLeonardo DiCaprioKate WinsletBilly ZaneA seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.Great effects and good acting, but someone should teach George Lucas and James Cameron how to write dialogue.
- DirectorJason ReitmanStarsElliot PageMichael CeraJennifer GarnerFaced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat young woman makes a selfless decision regarding the unborn child. It's funny and well acted, still a bit over-rated.
- DirectorCameron CroweStarsTom CruiseCuba Gooding Jr.Renée ZellwegerWhen a sports agent has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it, he decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent agent with the only athlete who stays with him and his former colleague.A three star film, that's it.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsMichael KeatonJack NicholsonKim BasingerThe Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being Jack Napier, a criminal who becomes the clownishly homicidal Joker.I loved this film for years and years, but when Nolan's films came out, I realized how little of a story there is. I mean the Joker kidnaps Vicky Vale....just so he can dance with her on top of an abandoned church ?? You better rush and get there quick Batman before he dances her to death!
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonVicky JensonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazA mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back. There were many 4 star reviews, so I expected to be blown away, but it's just a 3 star movie.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJeff BridgesMatt DamonHailee SteinfeldA stubborn teenager enlists the help of a tough U.S. Marshal to track down her father's murderer.Jeff Bridges pulled off the part well and the girl was great. But other than that, there's no good reason why this remake was even made. It just gave us more of a sentimental and kind of depressing ending than the upbeat ending that the John Wayne film had. I prefer the ending from the John Wayne film.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittCate BlanchettTilda SwintonTells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with consequences. Not as great as I expected after all the praise. Good acting but the story kind of goes nowhere.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsColin FarrellJamie FoxxGong LiBased on the 1980s TV action/drama, this update focuses on vice detectives Crockett and Tubbs as their respective personal and professional lives become dangerously intertwined.I'm still waiting for the version that kicks a$$, that's like the show....with better actors. Even the Michael Mann that produced the show and directed Heat is barely present.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonCiarán HindsAfter a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.After all the praise, I expected more.
- DirectorMark AndrewsBrenda ChapmanSteve PurcellStarsKelly MacdonaldBilly ConnollyEmma ThompsonDetermined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.I really thought Wreck It Ralph would easily win Best Animated film. Brave is good but not Oscar worthy at all. For one, the story really isn't that strong.
Wow a Disney Princess who doesn't care about love. Doesn't mean it was Oscar worthy. - DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJonathan GroffFearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.Frozen was a "good" movie but an instant classic that people still won't shut-up about ? No not really. Tangled was better and it wasn't even nominated!
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.Barkhad Abdi was chilling but his performance and the line "I'm Captain Now!" are both over-rated. If it's that easy for an actor to get a nomination for playing a villain; then many should have been nominated. Dennis Hopper had some memorable lines he delivered just as well in Speed...
