- DirectorSidney J. FurieStarsChristopher ReeveGene HackmanMargot KidderThe Man of Steel crusades for nuclear disarmament and meets Lex Luthor's latest creation, Nuclear Man.At the time this was the best superman movie ever! However, watching it now, it is the worst made. Nuclear Man was so cool with his electricity and metal claws.
- DirectorRichard MarquandStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side. Most adventurous of the Star Wars films, I didn't really connect with the other films of this series either. Ewoks, the stomach in the desert, gold bikini and jabba the hut, the monster in jabba's palace.
Perhaps the weakest movie in retrospect, pandering to a young audience. But I WAS young and this for me was entertainment! - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKate CapshawKe Huy QuanIn 1935, Indiana Jones is tasked by Indian villagers with reclaiming a rock stolen from them by a secret cult beneath the catacombs of an ancient palace. The only Indiana Jones film I really connected with. Amongst all the adventure, the creatures, the underground mining structure, shorty, sacrifice, magic.
Another one that can be accused of crimes against cinema. But you know what? My adventurous young mind loved every minute. - DirectorJeannot SzwarcStarsHelen SlaterFaye DunawayPeter O'TooleAfter losing a powerful orb, Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.I loved all 4 of the 80s (ish) superman movies with superman being committed piously to justice. However supergirl was a different story with supergirl challenged by essentially a witch, kind of more grounded in real superstition, making this a darker film than the others.
As far as I could see anyway, because the uk version was cut to practically nonsense. Still that sexy suit was even better on a girl and I wish this film was always alongside the core movies in people's minds and in box sets. - DirectorMichael PressmanStarsPaige TurcoDavid WarnerMichelan SistiThe Turtles discover their origins while they endeavour to save New York City from the evil Shredder and his Foot Clan. When I saw this film in the cinema when I was 10, it was the best thing ever!
In retrospect it suffered from cautious production that avoided violence and replaced it with a rap show? But who cares. When I watched it I loved it and came out feeling epic ninja. - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.Ever wonder what it would be like to live in a mall? Yet another comment on consumerism and the superficial age sees the survivors who take refuge in said mall, in the midst of the zombie holocaust, playing at modern life and getting bored of it.
Other themes in the film are ones of personal choices, and consequences to being a careless bully and enjoying violence, which carries on to Day of the Dead.
As a teenager this was my kind of movie. Gory, arty, social commentary-y. - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. All brilliant actors with a story of a man discovering God despite having used His words blindly all his life while killing people for a living. Several stories mixed together with a talkative script directed so well.
Again as a teenager the now cult style of this oddly ordered joyride spoke to me. - DirectorBobby FarrellyPeter FarrellyStarsCameron DiazMatt DillonBen StillerA man gets a chance to meet up with his dream girl from high school, even though his date with her back then was a complete disaster. This is one of my favourite films NOT because of the scene it seems to be known for. But for the love story. And the whole film's unreal comedy which was rare at the time of its release.
The end where true love is displayed by wanting that person to be happy, that's a really great message and a dream I have been lucky enough to have lived in my life.
The band that keep turning up when a sweet usually-atmospheric song is being played right from the beginning sets the tone for some not-to-be-taken-too-seriously comedy and the comedy flows from there.
The little moment when Ted lifts Warrens headphone to say goodbye and he doesn't attack him is a magical one that let's us know that it is true love, in terms of fate.
I also do not like the film for Cameron Diaz being loved by everyone. If you have a thing for her that's fine, whatever. The idea of all these different people trying to sabatage her life and Ted wanting to salvage it is a bit funny in itself, but really its the basis for illustrating the kind of selfless true love described above.
Those that keep their lives will lose it, and those who would give up their lives will be given true life to the full. This is why one of my favourite movies There's Something About Mary.
I dislike many of the comedy romance films that came after it that do not do the same amazing job, and do not have the same great mix of sweetness, trueth and abstract comedy. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more. This is one of my favourite films NOT because of any fighting. It's a film that has unfortunately suffered from pre-judgement as it is not atall about fighting.
What it is about is a man struggling to exist in a superficial world until he has enough and breaks free,, opening a world of possibilities to him.
It is one of the few films where a voice over naration has been so appropriate and it is also a twisted kind of love story in that you don't even see it there, which given his problems when revealed, you might understand as being how he would have missed it as well.
Yet again, with all the pieces together at the end, it finishes on a moment of love and fate. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsJackie Earle HaleyPatrick WilsonCarla GuginoIn a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history. For me this was the first movie to take superheroes and fully ground them in the grit and dark of humanity.
