Oscar Snubs & Surprises of the Last 10 Years6 of 24
2002
There were two big surprise winners this night, and both representing the same film: 'The Pianist'. After winning the BAFTA, SAG Award, Critic's Choice Award, and being nominated for a Golden Globe, everybody thought that Daniel Day-Lewis would win the Best Actor prize for his acclaimed role as a sadistic gang leader in 'Gangs of New York', but Adrien Brody won, making him the youngest Best Actor winner ever. Roman Polanski then won the Best Director award, when Rob Marshall for 'Chicago' was the shoo-in after winning the DGA. Richard Gere, as the singing tap-dancing lawyer Billy Flynn, was not present in the Best Actor category, with Michael Caine probably "taking" his place for his role in 'The Quiet American'.
