Roy takes the blame and is ordered off of the property by Willard, over the protests of his niece June. Then Devery has two of his men, whom he has planted on the guest ranch ran by Splinters McGonigle, steal a diamond brooch belonging to Mrs. Edsel and the blame is placed on one of the work camp boys, Jim Corley. Roy has his work cut out for him to clear the boys of the pending charges, especially after Devery has Warden Parker killed and Roy's crew is also blamed for that."I didn't know you had enough brains to get an idea."

When the rustlers steal a herd from Alice Blake, her kid brother Bobbie, sets out to get help from his radio favorites, Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, and the Sons of the Pioneers, who are en route to Lariat Lodge to play a one-night stand. While riding down the road with Gabby Whittaker, who has given him a ride in his jalopy, Bobbie sees three men who he recognizes as rustlers and, when he tries to stop them, they begin beating him with whips. His life is saved by the timely arrival of Roy and the Sons of the Pioneers. On the way to take Bobbie back to his sister, who is at the Fellows Ranch, they run into the rustlers on a raid, and take Burt Wooster and Pete prisoners. Wooster, the foreman at the Fellows Ranch, is actually an accomplice working for Jordan. He insists that he is not a gang member and Roy, pretending to believe him, agrees to let him take Pete to Sheriff Brite. Unaware that Roy and the Sons are following, Wooster and Pete go straight to the Lariat Lodge, where Wooster, after announcing that he is quitting, soon learns that he should have gone to the Sheriff with Pete, because Jordan and Pete shoot him. He lives long enough to tell Roy that the signal for a rustler raid is the playing of a certain song over the Lodge's nightly radio program."When hoss thieves hear me comin', they march right up with a rope around their neck!"

Doris and her trainer, Dave Norris ('Douglas FOwley'), accompany Roy and his outfit to the border at Caliente, where they are approached by Rosina (Charlita), a young gypsy fortune teller who begs Roy not to continue the trip. After crossing the border, Roy and his men are attacked by masked bandits, the horses are stolen and the stable boy is murdered. Accompanied by Doris and his sidekick Pinky (Pinky Lee) and the a Mexican Commandante, Roy goes to the gypsy camp to find Rosita. She is not there but Roy spots the stolen thoroughbreds hidden among a herd of wild horses near the camp. He also finds the dead body of a horse that appears to be "Dancing Girl." The loss of the horse means ruin for Doris, who is unaware that Norris and his crooked partner, "Studsy" Denning (Frank Richards), killed a mare resembling her horse and left it where Roy could find it."All ready, get set, go!"

Border Patrolman Tom Sharper intercepts one of the trucks but is overpowered and left for dead. Carroll, having already been paid for the job and not wanting any evidence to walk around, get caught and lead back to him, backs the human-cargo trucks to the edge of a cliff and sends the drums crashing to the boulder far below. Judge Cookie Bullfincher and Border Patrolman Roy Rogers conduct a search for the missing Tom, but the crooks have gone back for him and find him in a state of amnesia. They rob the bank and pin it on Tom. It is now up to Roy to clear his friend and also put an end to Carroll's human-smuggling racket."Oh you, you..., and that goes for your horse too!"

The mare, who had earlier had a tryst with Trigger, foals Trigger, Jr. who Roy, finally out of jail, uses to help capture the smugglers."You know, I don't think this guy's gonna scare so easy."
