- CreatorMike FlanaganStarsMichiel HuismanCarla GuginoHenry ThomasFlashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.S1
A well done, slow burn, psychological horror series, breaking down a family's trauma. The theatrical style, particularly the monologues were mostly quite effective and the horror aspect, the 'scares' were understated, which helped them in being unnerving. There were some slower parts where I wavered, more earlier on than not, before the series and the characters really established themselves, but overall I was engaged, increasingly so, and swept up in this family's ceaseless nightmare. - CreatorDan PerraultTony YacendaStarsTyler AlvarezGriffin GluckJimmy TatroA true-crime satire that explores the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left twenty-seven faculty cars vandalized with phallic images.S2
I didn't expect it to turn out as well as it did. Don't me wrong, the 1st season is obviously fresher, a little funnier and has a more sympathetic victim, but S2 delivered without a doubt. Binged in 2 days, didn't look at my phone once, it passes the muster. - CreatorDaniel AbrahamMark FergusTy FranckStarsSteven StraitDominique TipperWes ChathamThe disappearance of rich-girl-turned-political-activist links the lives of Ceres detective, accidental ship captain and U.N. politician. Amidst political tension between Earth, Mars and the Belt, they unravel the greatest conspiracy.S3
Essentially two short seasons. The first one concluding a long gestating story (action based climax, but I didn't have a big problem with it, other than the juvenile writing for Avasarala; she just suddenly swore all the time, as if the writers were 11 and just discovering rude words, it was random) and the second half of the season evolving into a strange, SG:1 season 10 style mystery. The slowdown in pace, from wars and battles to quieter character work was much appreciated. I like the team dynamic, particularly Wes Chatham's savage Amos, and the supporting characters too set themselves apart, David Strathairn's Ashford especially.
Not as fond of Elizabeth Mitchell; she's in everything, playing the same sort of character and her being in the latter half of S3 came across as contrived. That said, very enjoyable season, and episode 8 deserves a special mention as a stunning episode; everything worked spectacularly, it was of those episodes where you think throughout it that you're watching something special, chills almost. Writing, acting, everything was probably better than it's ever been. Even Steven Strait was rather good in it, and he can barely act! - CreatorVince GilliganPeter GouldStarsBob OdenkirkRhea SeehornJonathan BanksThe trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the years leading up to his fateful run-in with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.S4
A high point for the series. That said, I got bored after the first episode and took nearly a year to continue(!), but once I did, I found that it had the balance that I've been looking for since the series began. Between Mike/Nacho's drug exploits and the lawyer content. The Kim/Jimmy stuff has struggled to be interesting in the past, often dragging beyond belief, but I've got no complaints about either of them this year.
The pacing is still an issue, with that slight undercurrent of boredom knocking on the door (the editing wasn't efficient; one episode had something like a 7 minute intro that was a dull waste of time with very little happening, other scenes going on for too long), but that was meagre compared to what was an otherwise polished season, writing wise. The plot and character arcs, no complaints about either. - CreatorNoah HawleyStarsDan StevensRachel KellerAubrey PlazaDavid Haller is a troubled young man diagnosed as schizophrenic, but after a strange encounter he discovers special powers that will change his life forever.S2
Far more artsy than the first season, which is mostly well done; a lot of finesse is displayed behind the camera. But there's a loose focus to it though, with the style taking over the substance a little too much, as opposed to the 1st season, which prioritised story and character and gave it a little flair around the sides; each episode is hard to describe because on paper, not much technically happens, which will make Legion divisive, more so than S1, but I liked it well enough. I'm not itching to see the next season though, as I was by the end of S1. And that indifference is an indictment. - StarsAlexander DreymonEliza ButterworthArnas FedaraviciusAs Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred--born a Saxon but raised by Vikings--seeks to claim his ancestral birthright.S3
Took about 4 episodes to get going, but from 4-8, it hit its stride. - CreatorLaeta KalogridisStarsChris ConnerRenée Elise GoldsberryDichen LachmanSet in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored, a prisoner returns to life in a new body and must solve a mind-bending murder to win his freedom.S1
7.7. Flawed, erratic mess. Ambitious though, which you've got to give it points for. It was quite random too, as the sidekick's inclusion showed, then his daughter's, then his wife's. It didn't turn out quite how I expected, how the premiere set things up in terms of powers, becoming slightly more conventional, but this is still high concept sci-fi. - CreatorJez ButterworthTom ButterworthJames RichardsonStarsDavid MorrisseyEleanor Worthington-CoxMackenzie CrookIn 43 AD, the Roman Army returns to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia.S1
7.6 For the first 45 minutes of the opening episode, I was rather underwhelmed, drifting away to my phone, barely able to put up with it as background noise but then it got interesting, and remained that way for a stretch after that. It settled into a surprisingly decent show, funny, well acted, good plotting and feuds. Sadly, its 4th episode dragged hard, only to be followed by the best of the season, writing, acting, direction, allowing scenes and actors to truly breathe, ep 5 was a step up. Britannia did alright from there on out. Overall a promising start. Zoe Wanamaker revels in her role, David Morrissey brings the gravitas, MacKenzie Crook's ambiguous druid perplexes and mystifies in equal measure and the outcast delivers some nice bouts of levity. Sizeable budget and visually top notch. - CreatorJohn AltschulerMike JudgeDave KrinskyStarsThomas MiddleditchT.J. MillerJosh BrenerFollows the struggle of Richard Hendricks, a Silicon Valley engineer trying to build his own company called Pied Piper.S5
7.6 The first 3 episodes evoked the early days of tight, clever, fresh, repeatedly laugh out loud humour but it soon settled into an only occasionally funny, sometimes weird (the anti-Christian one, another where two characters fell in love with an AI) and less interesting groove. The finale was better to be fair. - CreatorOlan RogersDavid SacksStarsFred ArmisenTom KennyOlan RogersAn astronaut named Gary and his planet-destroying sidekick called Mooncake embark on serialized journeys through space in order to unlock the mystery of where the universe actually ends and if it actually does exist.S1
Like a cross between Futurama and Rick and Morty. Very silly, but amusing and impressively animated. - StarsDaniel BrühlDakota FanningLuke EvansNewspaper illustrator John Moore meets with criminal psychologist (alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler to investigate a serial killer in New York during the late 19th century.S1
Sherlock Holmes-esque drama set in New York circa 1896, revolving around the search for a serial killer in a time where such science was nascent. My old rule was that I gave a series 5 episodes to get me hooked or I'd not continue, and sure enough, the 1st ep or two were fine but nothing special, 3 and 4 a little better, the mystery deepening but the 5th episode was a revelation, the next 2 after that as well. The culmination of everything they'd built, every scene was exquisitely written, acted, directed, the music standing out by letting every scene drip with intensity to their fullest extent. They did well at allowing the killer to have a certain aura, never shown, always out there and one step ahead, the terror of a fearful city.
A solid cast in Bruhl, Fanning (haven't seen her since Taken, which was almost 20 years ago) and Luke Evans (I'm glad that he's finally found a decent role to inhabit), the setting was fascinating, the most advanced the world had ever been but still advancing rapidly and new. They captured the zeitgeist perfectly. - CreatorRoger BlackWaco O'GuinStarsDavid HermanTom KennyKyle KinaneAnimated series about bad cops. Not bad as in corrupt, bad as in under-performing. They aren't first responders, they are the worst responders. This series is obscene. It makes Family Guy look like The Simpsons. Fans of the likes of Big Mouth will enjoy it a lot, it's funny and will make you cringe at the same time. Netflix is crushing it in the animated department.
- CreatorCarlton CuseGraham RolandStarsJohn KrasinskiWendell PierceMichael KellyUp-and-coming CIA analyst, Jack Ryan, is thrust into dangerous field assignments.S1
A new 24 style series, a little slower, a tad less dramatic and with some cheese here and there (particularly what they shamelessly tried to do with Greer, in an attempt to save face), but overall, Amazon have done some good work here. They've got a long way to go until they catch up with Netflix, but they're getting closer. - CreatorMichael SchurStarsKristen BellWilliam Jackson HarperJameela JamilFour people and their otherworldly frienemy struggle in the afterlife to define what it means to be good.S3
I thought it found its footing in terms of humour and plotting about halfway through, before that I was flagging a little, pushing myself to watch it where at the halfway point, I wanted to keep watching. - CreatorPhoebe Waller-BridgeStarsJodie ComerSandra OhFiona ShawAfter a series of events, the lives of a security operative and an assassin become inextricably linked.S1
I cringe at what actual spies would think of this show's methodology, in terms of some silly decisions by these spooks, but I like the dynamics. Jodie Comer, who plays the assassin Villanelle, is the highlight. - CreatorMarti NoxonStarsAmy AdamsPatricia ClarksonChris MessinaAfter treating her mental illness, crime reporter Camille Preaker returns to her hometown to solve the murder of two young girls. However, she is forced to face and deal with her own demons too.The pacing was hard to sit through in the first half, luckily improving in the second. Structure-wise, I was a little confused. They had 2 main suspects and just kinda waited until it all figured itself out(!), instead of investigating everybody and connecting the dots, figuring out the relationships and timelines as you'd typically see (for good reason). By the shocking end, it felt like they'd left a lot out on expanding on that involvement. So I'm a little split. I wanted to bail after the 1st half yet sat comfortably through the better second half.
- CreatorDavid KajganichMax BorensteinAlexander WooStarsJared HarrisDerek MioTobias MenziesSupernatural, semihistorical, horror anthology series, where each season is inspired by a different infamous or mysterious real life historical tragedy.S1- A well cast slow burn. I much preferred the first half though; the second half was too gruelling. Supposed to be, but still.
- CreatorLiz FlahiveCarly MenschStarsAlison BrieMarc MaronBetty GilpinA look at the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s.S2
I think that S1 was a lot tighter, it started well but lost my concentration more as it went on. Not to say that it didn't have its moments, its LOLs and drama. - CreatorJed MercurioStarsRichard MaddenSophie RundleVincent FranklinTroubled war veteran turned Police Officer David Budd is assigned to the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Protection Branch.S1
Not bad. A little... stilted, writing and acting wise sometimes (I guess that the best actors and writers go swanning off to Hollywood!) but as British tv goes, it was better than expected. - CreatorBill BurrMichael PriceStarsBill BurrLaura DernJustin LongFollow the Murphy family back to the 1970s, when kids roamed wild, beer flowed freely and nothing came between a man and his TV.S3
Might be my least favourite of the 3 seasons so far, lacking their more memorable moments and laugh out loud hilarity, but it was a decent, mid-table effort. - CreatorAlec BergBill HaderStarsBill HaderStephen RootSarah GoldbergA hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city's theatre arts scene.S1
I expected a lot more based on what I'd heard but it was fine I guess, a quick binge. The main character being basically based on Dexter (even wearing the same shirt), which subtly drew me in I think. - CreatorJesse ArmstrongStarsNicholas BraunBrian CoxKieran CulkinThe Roy family is known for controlling the biggest media and entertainment company in the world. However, their world changes when their father steps down from the company.S1
I watched the whole thing but I still don't really get the appeal; none of these characters are likeable. At all. It's just watching horrible, selfish people do horrible, selfish things, with no upside. It was kind of hypnotic in the sense that I kept watching anyway. It's by no means a 'bad' show, but nothing stands out; the writing, acting, nothing's overtly impressive, the massive hype, to me, is completely unjustified. But other than that, it's fine(!). - CreatorGrant MorrisonBrian TaylorStarsChristopher MeloniRitchie CosterLili MirojnickAn injured hitman befriends his kidnapped daughter's imaginary friend; a perky blue flying unicorn.S1
Exhaustingly violent. I'm no prude by any means, but yikes. I like Chris Meloni though, glad to see him front and centre for his own series. - CreatorJennifer FlackettAndrew GoldbergNick KrollStarsNick KrollJohn MulaneyJessi KleinTeenage friends find their lives upended by the wonders and horrors of puberty.S2
I can't believe that they made Big Mouth pc, basically plastering it with left wing nonsense, including an entire episode of propaganda. And I wouldn't even mind, so long as it was funny and well constructed like S1, but the laughs were few and far between. The likes of Paradise PD and Final Space leave Big Mouth S2 in a forgettable place. - StarsBenedict CumberbatchJennifer Jason LeighHugo WeavingThis series depicts how the son of an aristocratic family seeks redemption and recovery.5 episode mini-series.
The first episode was essentially an hour long unraveling, a relentless drug binge that coincided with/was fueled by the death of a parent. It was uncomfortably interesting! Then the 2nd episode, it was magnetic throughout and often horrifying. One of the year's more memorable episodes, and a visual treat to boot. Hugo Weaving's character was one of the most menacing that I've seen on tv in a long time. After that, eps 3, 4 and 5, it wasn't as interesting. They spun their wheels a little bit, going through the (same e)motions without really providing anything new. For the 2nd episode alone, I'd recommend Patrick Melrose.
