- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity. While there are probably better MCU films after this. The love I have for this film and what it did for cinema changed everything and is the reason I love film today. Seeing this in theaters showed me anything was possible and it will remain a top tier film for me for a long long time.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. If the first Avengers was a big step for cinema this was the pay off for it all. Loaded with great action, phenomenal character moments and concluding the epic Infinity Saga with gravitas. Endgame is one of those once in a lifetime movies I had the pleasure of witnessing as it unraveled and it will continue to inspire for generations.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.A battle of epic proportions “Infinity War” sees Thanos take center stage in a fight against the Avengers for his precious Infinity Stones and sees our heroes not only lose but go down pulling an epic punch that makes for one entertaining film.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandZendayaBenedict CumberbatchWith Spider-Man's identity now revealed, Peter asks Doctor Strange for help. When a spell goes wrong, dangerous foes from other worlds start to appear, forcing Peter to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.Something I don’t think anyone ever thought they’d see. Tom Holland’s iteration of Spider-Man comes into his own while dealing with something no other Spider-Man has ever dealt with before. A sad, fun, epic, but poignant tale that shows the possibilities of the multiverse and the phenomenal storytelling opportunities.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.A team no one knew, that now everyone loves. That’s the magic of this perfectly cast and perfectly directed hilarious space superhero film. “Guardians of the Galaxy” is just a great meal with no instructions just a lot of experimenting, and it’s all delicious.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Continuing Cap’s story while also setting the stage for Marvel’s third phase. The Russo’s juggle a balancing act, introducing new characters, finishing great story lines, and developing new ones to end Cap’s trilogy on a high note, while also giving us an Avengers film that feels like playing with your toys.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsChadwick BosemanMichael B. JordanLupita Nyong'oT'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.Regal, Shakespearean, while also ambitious. “Black Panther” earns its best picture nomination, by giving us one of the first fully African American led productions, but delivering a great story with Chadwick Boseman, Ryan Coogler, and Michael B. Jordan giving it their all.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier.A well crafted follow-up. “The Winter Soldier” continues Captain America’s journey in an expertly directed film that’s akin to 70’s spy thrillers. It’s also so wonderfully well written and surprisingly emotional.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil. What was to come…we had no idea…what they gave us…something we should love. “Iron Man” is a film that has some great action and special effects, but is ultimately buoyed by RDJ’s electric performance and the assured direction by Jon Favreau. Delivering one of the best superhero films of its medium and beginning a world we would live in for years to come.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattChukwudi IwujiBradley CooperStill reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own - a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful.Once more with feeling and so much in fact. Guardians 3 (much like it’s characters) is not a perfect film, but it is the perfect ending to this beloved team of misfits we’ve come to love as well as a phenomenal showcase for Rocket Raccoon.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsLetitia WrightLupita Nyong'oDanai GuriraThe people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T'Challa. The tragedy that was the death of Chadwick Boseman clearly caused this script to go through changes and was handled beautifully. A loving tribute to the man we all knew as the Black Panther, as well as a phenomenal story of grief and passing the torch. Coogler, Wright, Huerta, Nyong’o, Gurira, Bassett, Duke, and so many more deserve all the love for this beautiful piece within this ever expanding universe.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela. Finally capturing some fun, the third Thor film injects a renewed energy to the franchise thanks to Taika Waititi’s direction and the wonderfully cosmic feel. Creating a space-viking adventure that begins a new journey for the god of thunder.
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsChris EvansHugo WeavingSamuel L. JacksonSteve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.Introducing us to Captain America. This beautifully stylish film, shows us an MCU in the 40s, as well as hero to inspire us all. “The First Avenger” gives us the last hero to round out the team and shows us why he should be the one to lead it to victory.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandMichael KeatonRobert Downey Jr.Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.Homecoming reboot’s the Web-Head for a third time, this time in the MCU. Focusing more on the high school story, this Spider-Man film is a great small story that will only get bigger and bigger for him and Tom Holland is more than perfect for the role.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.“Far From Home” continues Peter’s story in a Post-Endgame world and in a post Tony Stark world, giving him a chance to come into his own and face off against a villain unlike something we’ve ever seen in a Spider-Man film before that gives us a unique and fun adventure for the character.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.Filled with James Gunn’s signature style. “Guardians Vol. 2” doesn’t quite reach the highs of its predecessor, but features some great character moments, and a much improved villain in the form of Kurt Russell.
- DirectorScott DerricksonStarsBenedict CumberbatchChiwetel EjioforRachel McAdamsWhile on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.Benedict Cumberbatch was born to play Strange, and this films mind bending visuals deliver on every level, even if its story is some what cookie cutter.
- DirectorDestin Daniel CrettonStarsSimu LiuAwkwafinaTony Leung Chiu-waiShang-Chi, the master of weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization. The first new hero of Marvel’s fourth phase. Shang-Chi is a beautiful love letter to Chinese culture and a great use of the Marvel character that introduced us to Simu Liu in a star making performance that adds to the MCU’s illustrious saga.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan. The sequel to “The Avengers” always had lots to live up to, and while this film mostly delivers, it almost buckled under the weight of its massive story. Clearly there were some things to polish before the third film hit. Having said that this film is still great, despite its faults and deserves more love despite being the weakest of its siblings.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.A film that shouldn’t work, but hey it’s charming,
funny, and surprisingly action oriented. Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man” may not have been what Edgar Wright spent his life trying to develop, but he gives us a very well crafted feature that is funny, heart felt, and fun for the family. Especially led by the always amazing Paul Rudd. - DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others.Sam Raimi brings his distinct style to this Marvel horror epic, even if it doesn’t quite give us a multiverse of insanity that the title promises. Elizabeth Olsen and Xóchitl Gomez deliver astounding performances in this Doctor Strange trip.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddEvangeline LillyMichael PeñaAs Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past. This sequel to Ant-Man amplifies the fun and humor of the first, but tries to shove way to many plots into one adventure. It however doesn’t fail at its balancing act thanks to Peyton Reed, Paul Rudd, and Evangeline Lily keeping the wheel steady.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanChristian BaleThor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.Doubling down on Taika Waititi’s humor and style. “Thor: Love and Thunder” is not as well balanced as its predecessor, but features plenty of laughs and surprising depth. With Christian Bale and Natalie Portman delivering great performances in this wholesome superhero adventure.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.“Iron Man 3” may not be one of the MCU’s finer entries, but I think if you look past the Mandarin twist you’ll find a fun Iron Man action adventure that hits far more than it misses.
- DirectorCate ShortlandStarsScarlett JohanssonFlorence PughDavid HarbourNatasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. It almost pains me to place this film as low as it is. “Black Widow” has a phenomenal cast and some really great scenes between them. It can also be argued that this is one of the most anticipated MCU films, but the story doesn’t deliver anything new aside from the characters, and it may be one of the more average films from this universe, not at all bad though.
- DirectorNia DaCostaStarsBrie LarsonTeyonah ParrisIman VellaniCarol Danvers gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe.“The Marvels” is a short briskly paced good time. With Brie Larson, Iman Velani, and Teyonah Paris leading us through a fun comic book adventure. However, the film falls back on some classic marvel tropes and at times feels like a small chapter in what should have been a much bigger story in my opinion.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsChris HemsworthAnthony HopkinsNatalie PortmanThe powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders. The first Thor film tries to tackle this character with a certain level of gravitas, and while that succeeds when we get to spend time on Asgard, the scenes on Earth can often drag the film. Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins deliver some of their best work through it all.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddEvangeline LillyMichael DouglasScott Lang and Hope Van Dyne are dragged into the Quantum Realm, along with Hope's parents and Scott's daughter Cassie. Together they must find a way to escape, but what secrets is Hope's mother hiding? And who is the mysterious Kang?By no means a bad film. Quantumania offers up the biggest Ant-Man adventure yet, as well as the biggest thing Peyton Reed has made thus far. However, despite its fun, the structure and pacing of the film moves so fast it can be hard to hang on. Making the film a fine start to phase 5 and good intro to Kang, but a fairly standard Marvel entry.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsEdward NortonLiv TylerTim RothBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper.“The Incredible Hulk” is definitely given more hate for being the black sheep of the MCU, and while you could skip it all together. Norton’s performance is quite good and it’s nice to see where Hulk started from in this universe.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.“Captain Marvel” is a phase one movie in a phase three world. Larson (who is a phenomenal actress) feels thrust into the role and the direction of this film feels very faceless. Giving Captain Marvel’s first feature a fun watch, but not much beyond that.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Mickey RourkeGwyneth PaltrowWith the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy.“Iron Man 2” is definitely rushed and doesn’t take full advantage of the comic storyline it’s based upon. Delivering a lack luster follow up that has some good scenes between it.
- DirectorChloé ZhaoStarsGemma ChanRichard MaddenAngelina JolieThe saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations.“Eternals” is one of those films that has its directors name all over it, and this cast is top notch. However meeting the ten in this film doesn’t give much time to get to know them, and the film can be very dull at times. Which is a shame, but I look forward to their future.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster. The sequel to Thor, tries to establish that gravity the first film wanted to obtain, and sadly doesn’t hit very many highs, but still has Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston to help us through it.
