- DirectorMichael GraceyStarsHugh JackmanMichelle WilliamsZac EfronCelebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.4/10 Whitewashed fluff. A bit of a one man show with a LOT of Hugh Jackman playing an honest, hard working hero...far from the true story (PT Barnum was a racist, animal torturing, jerkface)...But the music was quite nice and it was fun to see Zefron singing and dancing again, that was the best thing about it.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJoel EdgertonNoomi RapaceA detective must work with an Orc to find a powerful wand before evil creatures do.5/10 The first half of the film was pretty great! I liked the world they presented to us, hadn't seen anything like it in a movie that I recall (reminded me a bit of the world in "The Wolf Among Us" game) and Edgerton's Orc character was a brilliant downtrodden hero type that I really got on board with...yeah I really thought they were going somewhere with it...then around halfway through it just descended into madness. It was messy, chaotic and frankly baffling, by the end I just didn't care about anything that had happened.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsSam NeillJulian DennisonRima Te WiataA national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.10/10 A perfect movie in my eyes.
A sweet and charming film that was a great balance of uplifting, hilarious, sweet and sad...
Great acting all around, particularly the lead kid. Also, some brilliant dialogue, again particularly the lead kid's dialogue which was just so adorably "dumb 13 year old boy".
A lovely little adventure movie. - DirectorAlethea JonesStarsKatie AseltonToni ColletteBridget EverettFour moms whose only common ground is their kids' preschool class, decide to get together for a harmless "fun mom dinner."7/10 It was a nice enough film, started out strong but I was disappointed with the meandering ending. It felt like there was a few different sub plots and character that ended up being a bit pointless, as by the end they hadn’t been revisited or resolved. They could have spent maybe 5 minutes tying up loose ends and I would have been happier but it was pretty funny, relatable and well-acted, so decent enough.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela.8/10 Fun! This film reeked of one of my new favourite directors, Taika Waititi (he also did Hunt For The Wilder People and Moana), who made what was frankly a dumb and simple superhero movie plot into a hilarious couple of hours. Loved the 80's cheesy synth music and day glo colours, good world building and really funny, yeah I liked it.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.8/10 No spoilers. A very ... entertaining... 2 and a half hours.
- DirectorAva DuVernayStarsStorm ReidOprah WinfreyReese WitherspoonAfter the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.2/10 Rubbish. It gets 1 point for the first 15 minutes, they did a great job of setting up the characters situations and I really felt for the little girl main character, who was being bullied. It gets another point for looking quite pretty. I was originally going to give it another point for Oprah being in it, but you know what? No, Oprah. This was crap and she was crap in it. I would have thought that the great cast would have at least been able to help with the utter nonsense plot, but no. Just terrible. I hadn't read the book but you could tell that it was based on one as i felt like huge chunks of the story and key details were missing throughout. Throwing glitter at it can't disguise the complete lack of an actual storyline.
- DirectorPatrick HughesStarsRyan ReynoldsSamuel L. JacksonGary OldmanOne of the world's top bodyguards gets a new client, a world class hitman who must testify at the International Criminal Court. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial alive and on time.1/10 Didnt even get halfway before turning this off. I wanted to love it. In theory it was many of the things I enjoy in a movie, namely Samuel L Jackson, cheesy action and comedy, but the whole thing like a weak and cheap interpretation of an action comedy. A poorly written, predictable summer box office cash in. Booooooooo! BOOOOO!
- DirectorJeremy DysonAndy NymanStarsSamuel BottomleyDeborah WastellAmy DoyleAfter receiving a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions, skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a terrifying trip.6/10 Meh, it was alright but the stage show was much better. The movie felt like a special feature length episode of Inside Number 9 to me, it didn't feel very cinematic and frankly had to rely on cheap horror tricks to shock and frighten you. The stage show was so immersive and stripped down and this didn't feel like part of the same project. It was nice to see Andy Nyman leading a movie but...less is more in some cases and this was sometimes even a little bit dumb. There were a couple of good moments though so its not a complete loss but I was dissapointed.
- DirectorMacon BlairStarsMelanie LynskeyChris DoubekMarilyn Faith HickeyWhen a depressed woman is burgled, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves along with her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals.9/10 I really enjoyed it, like the 2 main characters it is eccentric, goofy and oddly sad. I'm not usually a big indie movie lover but this won me over, I was really rooting for the main character to succeed in her weird little Hero's Quest and Elijah wood as the sidekick was quirky and funny. Enjoyable.
- DirectorNancy MeyersStarsRobert De NiroAnne HathawayRene RussoSeventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin.7.5/10 a pretty cut&paste Hollywood comedy but it did the job, it was funny and well made and deniro was charming. Overall, heartwarming and made me laugh.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsChadwick BosemanMichael B. JordanLupita Nyong'oT'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.7/10 Looked good and had some good characters to work with but I was left wanting at the end, the story didn't progress much and overall felt it was pretty over hyped.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnonFollowing a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.2/10 Didn't finish it. This movie had some decent comedy names behind it like Wig and one of the better Hemsworths so I was HOPING that this would be at least passable, alas. I think I made it to about 10 minutes after they introduced the "sassy, black lady" character and I had to call it. Trash.
- DirectorBen FalconeStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen BellPeter DinklageA titan of industry is sent to prison after she's caught insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.7/10 Somewhat generic and predictable goofy humour but I did find myself laughing and the delivery is well timed. If you're looking for a dumb and easy movie, this does the trick.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsShailene WoodleySam ClaflinJeffrey ThomasA true story of survival, as a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.2/10 Ugh. This movie flipped between stressful and boring. Not for me.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonHolly HunterSarah VowellThe Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.8/10 Well I enjoyed it...but i'm not sure that kids, this felt like it was made for the fans of the movie 14 years ago, who are now "grown up". I liked it, I liked that they picked up the story where they left off, the scenes with Jack Jack are easily the best and Jack Jack does kind of carry the movie. Was it worth the 14 year wait? Not sure. But I am glad it exists and I enjoyed it.
- DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.7.5/10 Wow, McConaughey...that man can act eh? Psssssh. He carried it. The setting and the world around the story were much more interesting than the story itself and I found myself wanting more from this than it gave, I guess that is the case a lot of the time with "based on true story" movies, because true stories very rarely end with the fanfare of a hollywood movie...I just really hate that fade to black with the text that tells you what happened at the end, I was really hoping they wouldnt do it...they did.
- DirectorLauren Miller RogenStarsKristen BellDanielle DavenportKimiko GlennAfter she's left at the altar, a workaholic advertising executive ends up on her Caribbean honeymoon cruise with her estranged father.5/10 This movie was perfectly pleasant, it was perfectly structured, well timed and overall a very shiny and well polished comedy... as a result it felt formulaic, I've seen these characters and this story before, the only thing that was different was that they were on a cruise, which wasn't even made fun of... overall it seemed to be a very elaborate commercial for Royal Caribean.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsMatt DamonChristoph WaltzHong ChauA social satire in which a man realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself to five inches tall, allowing him to live in wealth and splendor.4/10 Disappointing. A really interesting and quirky idea that had a lot of promise, but failed to answer any of the questions it raised, it was a frustrating watch as the film meanders all over the place in terms of story, structure and characters, nothing really made that much sense, and not in a kooky, wes anderson kind of way, in just a rubbish, confused kind of way.
- DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.8.5/10 Visually stunning, really gorgeous movie to look at. The story is nice but it was a pretty standard storyline with your typical disney archetypes; young antagonist has identity crisis, meets wacky characters on path to self discovery, being yourself, romantic side plot etc etc. Reminded me of Mulan quite a bit.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.6.5/10 More of the same but with less heart this time. Packed full of jokes to almost an obnoxious degree, a few jokes I really enjoyed, but mostly jokes that I thought were dumb, in the bad way.
- DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsJason SudeikisJennifer AnistonEmma RobertsA veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.7/10 Pretty funny idea but I didn't like the casting...I found it difficult to believe them as their characters and the story was real thin, some of the jokes were gross and dumb but I did find it funny and watchable.
- DirectorPaul WeitzStarsTina FeyPaul RuddNat WolffA Princeton admissions officer who is up for a major promotion takes a professional risk after she meets a college-bound alternative school kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption.4/10 This annoyed me so much! The main characters are played by the wonderful Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, and I just don't understand how they ended up making something so dang BASIC. I also had problems with pretty much every single decision Tina Fey's character made, but the movie seemed to be pushing me to sympathize with her, for basically no reason. No lessons were learned and the plot is predictable. Paul Rudd and the kid that plays his son are adorable though..
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.7/10 Whilst this was funnier and overall better than I thought it would be; some decent action, a fun premise and setting, and some good talent behind it, there were a couple of WTF moment's (particularly with Karen Gillan's character) that were just plain dumb. Also, I am over Kevin Hart's short guy schtick.
- DirectorAnders WalterStarsMadison WolfeZoe SaldanaImogen PootsBarbara Thorson struggles through life by escaping into a fantasy life of magic and monsters.6/10 Started off strong, whimsical and sad, amazing set and costume design and an intriguing premise. However this movie is WAY too long, by at least half hour. And just gets sadder and sadder and sadder for bloody ages.
