2018 Halloween Horror Month
The rules are simple. 31 days. 31 horror movies. None that I have ever seen before and from all walks of the genre. I will judge the success of the month by my rating average, and give a best and worst for the month. The criteria of those titles is entirely subjective and the results of the impression each movie left with me. This is not indicative of their quality though that may play a factor in their score.
To explain their rating a bit, if a movie is so bad that its on the verge of being painful, it would fall somewhere within the 1-3 range. The 4-6 range is for movies that are not good but still watchable to good movies that have left little long lasting impression. 7-10 are movies I enjoyed to love.

- DirectorColin TheysStarsDean StockwellSean Patrick ThomasBlanche BakerA doctor and his family move to a quiet, small town. Soon he discovers the town's dark secret: A terrifying race of controlling creatures that live in the darkness in the forest behind their home. The movie moves to fast and yet manages to feel really slow because of it. Sections could have been cut and scenes should have been allowed to breathe. It has good atmosphere, but can't maintain it for the entire hour and forty one minutes. Its a meh movie and not the best start.
- DirectorRaymond St-JeanStarsChristopher HeyerdahlPeter FarbridgeArt KitchingHaunted by disturbing dreams from an inherited book, a young man becomes interested in the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. This was a nerdgasm if I'd ever seen one. The story is belligerent, trying to include a few references to Lovecraft's short stories while at times getting a little pretentious, particularly towards the end. It isn't the worst I've seen, I liked the scenes of Lovecraft addressing the audience, but could have had more focus and less of the writer flexing their Lovecraft trivia love.
- DirectorHuân VuStarsPaul DorschJürgen HeimüllerIngo HeiseA boy, looking for his missing father, travels to Germany and uncovers a haunting legacy that a meteorite left behind in the area. Based on H.P. Lovecraft's short novel "The Color Out of Space."It is rare to see Lovecraft adapted well into a movie. Often they just take the name and pen their own story, ones that not only stray from the original story but are utterly antithetical to his writing philosophy. This is a very faithful adaptation of the book and is decent. It suffers only from poor English acting, its obvious it isn't anyone's native tongue, and some rather uninspired special effects. Only watch if you are a die hard Lovecraft fan, its not like you have much else anyway.
- DirectorBruno VeSotaStarsEd NelsonAlan Jay FactorCornelius KeefeThe inhabitants of a small Illinois town begin disappearing after a strange cone is found sticking out of the ground nearby. There are some interesting shots early on but as it goes on the movie just seems to lose interest in itself. The mayor contemplating suicide before the heroes enter his office is great and the dutch angles drives home the impression that something is wrong with. Sadly, after that, there is nothing much to say about the rest of the movie. It never brings out the paranoia necessary to drive this genre of horror home, most likely as a result of movie practices at the time. Its cold and matter of factly, keeping the audience a ta distance that is counter intuitive to the narrative. Its a boring, no frills story that travels at a meandering pace down a linear path without twists or turns. I don't recommend it.
- DirectorJack HillStarsLon Chaney Jr.Carol OhmartQuinn K. RedekerA caretaker devotes himself to three demented siblings after their father's death. After seeing a clip of it in Zacherly's Horrible Horror, I was expecting schlock. What I got was a really well done story idea with Lon Chaney Jr. The antagonists are unscrupulous, Chaney is sympathetic, the kids are creepy, and the two heroes are endearing. Its a movie where everything works. I think I have a crush on Ann now. I thoroughly enjoyed this, it might be top billing for the entire month.
- DirectorCorin HardyStarsDemián BichirTaissa FarmigaJonas BloquetA priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.I never understood the popularity of the Conjuring franchise. This is more the same for the series, with heavy reliance on quantity of scares over quality. There is no tome to breathe, its just care after scare, and that isn't good. There is just not enough variety to warrant the number of jump scares. On top of that, there is no real rules the demon follows, so everything just feels hackneyed and random. I don't feel suspenseful because everything is just an excuse to illicit one jump scare after another and eventually I just became numb to it.
- DirectorTeinosuke KinugasaStarsMasuo InoueAyako IijimaYoshie NakagawaA man takes a job at an asylum with hopes of freeing his imprisoned wife.I was going to write this off as too artsy, but a cursory investigation assured me that wasn't the case. Japanese silent movies were meant to have someone explain it as they progress, without someone giving play by play this story is incomprehensible. I looked up a synopsis afterward and it greatly improved my disposition on this one. There are some legit interesting scenes, particularly involving the dancer in the asylum, and the ending is delightfully sardonic. But read a synopsis before you go through it.
- DirectorRolfe KanefskyStarsCraig PeckWendy BednarzMark CollverWhen a horror film buff tries to warn his friends spending spring break in a house in the woods of impending danger, they scoff at him, that is, until a huge mutant frog starts to pick them up one by one. This is the perfect way to introduce a normie to Troma. There is plenty of blood, boobs and crass humor but not to the degree of some other stuff by Lloyd Kaufman. Kanefsky beat Scream to the punch by 5 years, it's a movie that plays off the tired tropes of horror movies while aiming more for humor rather than chills. And it is fairly successful, the latter half has some really funny scenes, but the early could use some work. Initially the hero is grating, but as the story starts to fit his warped reality, he starts to grow as he starts trading barbed quips with his friend's girlfriend. More hardened Troma fans may not be too impressed but the uninitiated would get a kick.
- DirectorMario BavaLamberto BavaStarsDaria NicolodiJohn SteinerDavid Colin Jr.A couple is terrorized in their new house haunted by the vengeful ghost of the woman's former husband, who possesses their young son.Its most definitely a 70s Italian horror movie, filled with homely actors and an unpleasant sex scene focused on the man's hairy butt. Definitely not Bava's best work, his final film doesn't hold up with the rest of his work and dare I say, not that interesting. Maybe its that times had changed, but as soon as I heard the boy ask about his dead father, I already had the ending completely figured out. Just not as entertaining a movie.
- DirectorBarbara PeetersJimmy T. MurakamiStarsDoug McClureAnn TurkelVic MorrowHumanoid sea creatures start killing a fishing town's residents, and raping their women. It's up to the townsfolk and a visiting biologist to fight back and fend them off. Finally, a movie that says what we all been thinking: to hell with the ocean, fish the crap out of it and leave not a single thing alive. This movie is something, I don't know what but it is certainly a thing. I had fun, but this is by no means cinema genius. What I can say is, this is the best movie to feature rapist fish I've ever seen.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsSteve RailsbackMathilda MayPeter FirthA race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.Space vampires. For the three of you that need to hear more, this was a pretty bi budget movie for Cannon, and the money was decently spent. The dummies and models look fantastic and the cast is great. But there were obviously things going on in the background, it feels like some integral scenes were cut. Still a good outing by any criteria but its a shame it couldn't be better.
- DirectorLee Yong-juStarsKim Bo-yeonSin Eun-jeongShim Eun-kyungAfter Hee-jin's younger sister So-jin, who is possessed by a spirit, disappears, the neighbors die one by one and a secret underlying their deaths is revealed.Lacking in much terror, this turned out to be an engaging experience well worth the watch. Even at nearly 2 hours, it still manages to keep a very good pace and never feels like a chore to watch. The mystery that drives the movie in enthralling and the twists played well. The only downside is the lack of scares. There are a few, but nothing that will stick to you for long after the credits.
- DirectorMichael MedagliaStarsSean McGrathAnne SorceDenise PoirierAn aspiring sculptor falls in love with a talking hole in the wall when it starts to produce award winning art.I am impressed that this movie has a perfect 5.0 with almost 1800 reviews. Its not that good, not atrocious but rather subpar. Little feels natural between the human characters and a little cliche. Everyone is a cynical stereotype with little depth and vapid motivations. What does work is the vague nature of the hole but it needed more from the rest of the characters to really capitalize on it.
- DirectorRoger CormanStarsSusan CabotAnthony EisleyBarboura MorrisThe head of a major cosmetics company experiments on herself with a youth formula made from royal jelly extracted from wasps, but the formula's side effects have deadly consequences.It's... fine. I guess. The infamous movie that ended Susan Cabot's career, it wasn't worth it, but its not a bad movie. Forgettable more than anything, the monster mask isn't great but at least gets the point across. With the low quality cameras, its mostly just a black blur so its not too big an issue. Everything else, it works, just not all that well.
- DirectorChad CalekStarsChad CalekJustin HolsteinCraig PowellAward-Winning Filmmaker Chad Calek's "SIR NOFACE" documentary chronicles the bizarre events reported on Sydney Harbour's Cockatoo Island and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the only known paranormal investigation in history to be officially sanctioned by the Australian Government. Led by civilian investigator Craig Powell and the West Sydney Paranormal Research Team (W.S.P.R.), this mind-bending investigation would last in secrecy for nearly two years, which in addition to experiencing groundbreaking levels of paranormal activity, Powell and his W.S.P.R. team members were successful in filming countless events that defy all known rationale and scientific explanation, including the first ever verifiable footage of a full-body apparition the definitively proves the existence of ghosts. As the "must see" documentary for both skeptics and believers, SIR NOFACE is the single most important paranormal case ever documented and presented to the public.A long winded documentary that further ruins itself by injecting politics into ghost hunting. Did you know that Chad Calek is a West Coast liberal? Because you're going to in this wank fest dedicated primarily to stroking his... I'll go with ego. There is a ton of useless and stupid trivia injected into this bloated mess, stock commercial footage with goofy formatted quotes, and forced cursing. I have never heard anyone say f@ck tape when referring to a sex tape and was cut on his edginess. Then bam, a rant on climate change deniers and The Amazing Randi disproving psychics in my ghost hunt documentary. I feel bad for the investigators that did this, I hope he at least gave them a towel after hosing them. This sucked. Everyone go home. Christmas is cancelled.
- DirectorHideo NakataStarsAtsuko MaedaHiroki NarimiyaRyô IwamatsuNursing student Asuka (Atsuko Maeda) has just moved into an apartment complex with her parents and younger brother. On the first night in her new room, she is awoken by a strange scratching sound coming from the apartment of her neighbor, a reclusive old man who has refused all attempts at communication. Concerned over his well being, Asuka enters his home only to find him dead from malnutrition. Worse, it looks as if he had been trying to claw his way into her room. Asuka learns that there have been a number of strange deaths in the complex over the years from Shinobu (Hiroki Narimiya), the handyman cleaning up the old man's apartment. Even the girls at school whisper rumors of it being haunted. When the late night scratching returns, Asuka ventures back into her neighbor's home and comes face to face with an apparition of the old man! Panicked by the discovery of her apartment emptied and her family gone, Asuka seeks help from Shinobu, who brings in a spiritualist to exorcise Asuka of the evil surrounding her. However, as she delves into the girl's predicament, the spiritualist discovers that signs points not to the old man but to a small boy living in the complex with a past as tragic as the one Asuka herself lives in denial of.I expected more and got less. Hideo Nakata has done some horror movies I really liked, but this is just, its hard to get excited for. There are plenty of twists early on but after a while I just kind of got tired and wanted it to end. It managed to subvert some of my expectations in a good way, I was glad it wasn't a 'she was dead all along' movie, but it was a little slow and frustrating in the final stretch. and then the finale, it felt like it was supposed to hit harder. Emphasis on supposed to, it was a real let down. The first half is great, the latter not so much, negating each other and rendering it a middle of the road, meh movie.
- DirectorEric BrossStarsLucy LawlessDylan NealLiam WaiteFreshmen friends of the Tate University go to an underground party in the woods nearby the local cemetery. After a death, two of the students are arrested until a professor suggests that bats might be the real culprit.Thank God for Ash vs The Evil Dead, Lucy Lawless deserves better than this. I am pretty sure the film for this movie was edited with duct tape and the script written in yellow crayon. It is painful to see this thing cobbled together, scene transitions are jarring and every scene a constant head shaker. I am positive this was written from someone in high school, there is so much poorly written dialogue I expected Kevin Sorbo to come out to debate against the existence of God. A fun fact, vampire bats drink so much blood in one sitting they must pee to lighten themselves enough to fly. Knowing all of these characters were soaked in urine when they died proved a boon in making this hard to swallow pill go down. It is a TV movie however, and its better than The Tommyknockers. So its an F, just not as hard an F.
- DirectorWilliam CastleStarsRobert TaylorBarbara StanwyckJudi MeredithA woman is haunted by recurring nightmares, which seem to be instigated by her late husband who supposedly was killed in a fire.A more cerebral William Castle movie pays off. No gimmicks for this one, this movie stands well enough on its own. The twists are well timed and keep the pace going strong so that there is never a dull moment. Only flaw is, I can't say much without spoiling everything. I would recommend this, its a very strong contender for best of the month.
- DirectorLeigh ScottStarsSarah LievingGriff FurstDean StockwellA single mother delivers a monstrous baby boy, somehow connected to a dark prophecy involving the Black Brotherhood, a book called the Necronomicon, and a demonic portal. This is incomprehensible garbage. I struggled to hold back my sighs of disbelief all throughout this train wreck of a tv movie but it kept sinking even lower. There is a ton of namedropping, as though referencing Lovecraft's other works would somehow make up for the lack of plot, and the effects are sub Asylum tier. A character somehow has an epiphany because of his inability to explain the events in a dream. The villains don't even get to share more than ten minutes of screen time with the heroes, they just mull about on their own before popping off for no real reason. They don't even have a comprehensible plan. This is a travesty that needs to be buried in a landfill and set adrift.
- DirectorCharles B. PierceStarsBen JohnsonAndrew PrineDawn WellsThe story of a hooded, berserk killer who terrorized the border town of Texarkana, Arkansas in 1946--leaving no fewer than five murder victims in his wake. He was never caught. Based on one of America's most baffling murder cases.I was never keen on the remake, and seeing the original really exemplifies why. This has something that makes it stand out. The fact that its not a conventional movie better sets a tone that drives home these events "happened" and could happen again. Even though this is a fictitious portrayal of the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, it clouds your suspension of disbelief and successfully makes the movie more unnerving. The humor does give a nice change of pace but is a bit jarring, and the low budget and sloppy film making does hurt it however. There are a lot of extras that are reused quite noticeably and sometimes the crew manage to get into the shot, which does manage to undo some of the tension. Its still up there though and a solid recommendation.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsAnton YelchinImogen PootsAlia ShawkatA punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.I lost the plot on this one. The problem was the number of people jumping ship and joining the protagonists, mostly because they are all skinheads. They look very much the same and don't really stand out that much with a couple exceptions. And unlike the marines, this movie is more than willing to leave a man behind. There is no time for any exposition, which gives it a good brisk feel but leaves you wondering just who is what half the time. This does work in its favor as it will consistently surprise you, just don't dwell on what you missed too much. It was well paced and atmospheric, bleak and brutal. I would still recommend, but with a warning you might need multiple viewings.
- DirectorEdward L. CahnStarsSteven TerrellGloria CastilloFrank GorshinAliens equipped with venomous claws invade a small town but the town's teenage population is mobilized to fight the menace. An enjoyable movie, this movie is a product of a time of great paranoia. Instead of succumbing to it however, this movie satirizes it in the campy way teen centric movies could. The aliens themselves are goofy, but in a way quite horrific. The way they attack, with needles emerging fro their fingers and with such reckless abandon makes them very competent antagonists, and they prove quite clever. This does manage to over shadow their schlocky appearance, which in turn is quite famous. It appears that they are the source of many alien characters to come, from Morbo in Futurama to possibly the aliens in Zombies Ate My Neighbors. There are also some pretty brutal scenes for this period, like an alien's hand separating from its body exposing its bone and tendons, to a gory fight with a bull. The horror is weak but its a fun movie to watch and a decent recommendation.
- DirectorHisayuki ToriumiStarsHiroyuki OkitaMasako KatsukiOsamu SakaThe expendable crew of a corporate space vessel must stop a murderous shape-shifting alien organism that somehow got on board. This turned out to be a very competent horror movie. And it should, it borrows from some of the best. There is no better place to stage a horror movie. The sheer fact there is nowhere to run or hide make for a very tense atmosphere. And while I would say this movie didn't quite take advantage of that, it added a new element, what if the walls themselves weren't enough to keep you safe. Not only is the alien bacteria monster able to attack from all angles, the ship itself is intent on isolating and killing you. There are some especially good scenes, I especially liked the point of view scene as one crew member walks the hall, but there are some scenes where the animation is a bit jittery. In all, it needed a little more time. It is rather aggravating that it leaves some important answers hanging, particularly why all this is happening. Give it a go.
- DirectorCharles GuardThomas GuardStarsEmily BrowningArielle KebbelElizabeth BanksAnna returns home after a stint in a mental hospital, but her recovery is jeopardized by her father's new girlfriend and ghastly visions of her dead mother. This movie makes me angry. I am very well acquainted to the source material, there is no reason this should not be an instant best of horror month movie and one of my new favorite movies. So the fact that this movie is not infuriates me to no end. The movie isn't bad, I might have otherwise given it a recommendation. There are some tense scenes and the characters illicit an emotional response, but most of them are done and done better. Its the difference between "that is really creepy" to "I have to pee but am too afraid to hang my legs over the side of the bed." And the scenes original to this movie, don't really go anywhere. If you are willing to watch a Korean movie, I would tell you to watch A Tale of Two Sisters. If you aren't willing to see a foreign language movie, I'll tell you to watch A Tale of Two Sisters but this time I'll be far more firm.
- DirectorAdam SchindlerStarsRory CulkinLeticia JimenezJack KesyAnna suffers from agoraphobia so crippling that when a trio of criminals break into her house, she cannot bring herself to flee. But what the intruders don't realize is that agoraphobia is not her only problem.Well, this was an awful experience. This movie is a chore to watch and its all the fault of the characters. The premise should be simple, burglars try to victimize a woman but end up becoming victims themselves. How can they mess it up? By making the woman more a Lifetime movie for women and less Misery. She is utterly pathetic, even when she has them captive she isn't in control of her situation. And even then, she doesn't do anything. The whole second act is just them standing around in her basement. Ooh, there is a noose in one room, it would be really scary if she had a way to get them to hang themselves. She doesn't, that's there to taunt the audience with a way out. She has no plan, even though she was part of a serial killer duo and had been doing this for years. And she needs to validate herself to the person she is going to kill! I wouldn't recommend this to the blind and deaf, this is down there with Sir Noface, maybe even worse.
- DirectorChad FerrinStarsBill Oberst Jr.Roddy PiperNoah HathawayThe line between good and evil becomes blurred as a death row inmate fights to maintain his sanity and escape the clutches of a deranged Warden and his sadistic guards. Based on the comic book mini-series from Alterna Comics.Peter Simeti seems like a pretty cool guy. He donates comics to hospitals and seems to be very grateful to his readership, but this movie is whack crap. It doesn't shy away on the brutality, its pretty gruesome what happens to everyone in this movie. The warden played a good horror villain early on, the goggles and the black apron and his classical music, he is great. Unfortunately, halfway through, everything did a 180 and he lost all of that. It was kind of disappointing, I'm not sure what they were getting at and it kind of muddles everything up. But who stole the show was Rowdy Roddy Piper. Hot Rod is a legit monster in this movie and is almost unrecognizable from his wrestling days. To the right people I think I would give this a recommendation, maybe to someone who read the graphic novel and can explain to me the ending a bit.
- DirectorPaul MaslanskyStarsMarki BeyRobert QuarryDon Pedro ColleyWhen her boyfriend is murdered by mobsters, Sugar Hill decides not to get mad, but BAD. She asks the voodoo priestess Mama Maitresse to summon Baron Samedi, the Lord of the Dead, to help her gain a gruesome revenge. In exchange for Sugar's soul, the Dark Master raises up a zombie army to do her bidding. The bad guys who think they got away clean are about to find out that they are DEAD wrong.I was smitten by this movie. Its not that scary. The acting is often comic. The plot questionable. The fashion, from the 70s. But it has something that somehow manage to hold it together better than that first gangster's suit. And that's Baron Samedi. I could not get enough of the voodoo loa, every scene with him is a treat. His cruel laughter, alluring arrogance, his omnipotence, this is everything that I want from the loa of death. He is perfect in just about every way. Of course the movie is far from perfect, and for a blacksploitation movie somehow doesn't have a Mr. Big, but I recommend it solely for him.
- DirectorJon McBrideJohn PoloniaMark PoloniaStarsJon McBrideJohn PoloniaSebastian BarranTwo friends on a road trip pass through a town where aliens are landing and feeding upon some of the civilians.I feel bad now. I strive to come up with something positive to say about this movie but there just isn't. Its bad, even by VHS movie standards. The acting is atrocious, some of the rest I've ever seen, and the plot so slow and tedious the suspense was boring me. There is a ten minute silent walk through of a house, that's just too much when you already can't see anything because of the low quality format. The music is terrible to the point of being distracting. Its all stock music but played so loud it never becomes background noise. The only thing that I can say is it didn't anger me like Sir Noface and Intruders, but there is no enjoyment to take out of this. 39 is too young an age to go, but I cannot recommend this.
- DirectorJim WynorskiStarsKelli MaroneyTony O'DellRussell ToddA group of young shopping mall employees stay behind for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall goes on lock-down before they can get out, the robot security system malfunctions, and goes on a killing spree.I remember seeing this back when Blockbuster was a thing. For those too young to remember, Blockbuster was a store where you rented movies and video games. While I never picked it up then, it was something that always caught my eye as a perused the horror section. Setting the whole movie in a mall was an interesting idea, turning it into a time capsule of sorts. Again for the young, malls were large structures that contained numerous stores and served as a meeting place of sorts. Seeing thing that you don't see much of anymore, like a pet store, brought back some fond memories when I'd go to my old mall. And Sherman Oaks is still in business, so that's also good to hear. The movie itself isn't all that bad, but its missing something. There is no greater villain than the robots, which is a little bit of a problem. They just let it slide that a lightning strike could make security bots into murder machines, having some talking head from the company to get their comeuppance for such a glaring design flaw would have done well. Some human interaction would have done it wonders. Human interaction is like talking to someone without a computer.
- DirectorShan HuaStarsBilly ChongLau ChanChung-You ChangA criminal comes to town in order to kill Billy Chong over a past dispute. But instead of getting his own hands dirty, he hires a Taoist wizard to animate some zombies to do the job for him. The plan goes horribly awry, and the bad guy ends up getting killed in his own trap. This pisses off the villain's spirit and he forces the priest to reincarnate him - only they can't find a suitable body. Meanwhile, an undead fiend of sorts comes to town to kill Billy's father over some other past dispute. This is where all of Billy's kung fu training comes in handy, and he manages to kill the attacker. With this, the other bad guy finally has a body to use, but the reincarnation goes wrong and the corpse is reborn as a vampire. This was manic. Kung fu horror is a bizarre combination, but not one that I am alien to. I did enjoy the craziness of A Chinese Ghost Story, and while this doesn't measure up to it, its still a very entertaining. The movie is very light on the horror aspect, more often not its supernatural elements are used for more comedic effect. Useless zombies that hop and fall on their victims and botched black magic rituals give a lot of levity in the first half. But when it does use the horror, it goes hard. A man gets his head kicked off. Its not that uncommon in kung fu movies, but we just spent the last ten minutes of the secondary antagonist lose the priest because of a leafy hat. The monster effects are nearly Feeders level most of the time, except for Long, but its at least entertaining what they do with them. I recommend it to kung fu fans for a good chortle at the cheapness of it. It can't even afford closing credits.
- DirectorNick GrindeStarsBoris KarloffEvelyn KeyesBruce BennettA physician on death row for a mercy killing is allowed to experiment on a serum using a criminals' blood, but secretly tests it on himself. He gets a pardon, but finds out he's become a Jekyll-&-Hyde.I round out the month with a classic film of Boris Karloff. Its a bit dated, every scene where an actor is stuck with a needle is obstructed in some way and all of the death scenes are cut away to Karloff's face, but the latter oddly works. It showcases the strength of him as an actor as he slowly devolves into the murderous persona almost like a Jekyll and Hyde situation. And the makeup job on him is amazing, Karloff starts the movie as an old man, but it looks almost exactly like they ripped him from Targets, Karloff's final American movie, 28 years after this one. But what hasn't aged well was the script writing. There is no room for subtlety in old movies and some of the dialogue would have been better left out altogether. Things like the other doctor expositioning that the blood transfusion had made him a murderer moments before he even commits his first murder just don't hold up well. In all, I think it was a good movie to recommend to classic movie fans.
- DirectorJack HillStarsLon Chaney Jr.Carol OhmartQuinn K. RedekerA caretaker devotes himself to three demented siblings after their father's death. An astonishing low score this year, averaging only 5.6, yet I do not feel that this month was a failure. There were a ton of decent movies that I have watched, but the average was swayed purely for lack of great movies to negate the truly terrible ones. As to great movies, I have a tough choice between two, and while The Night Walker put up a valiant effort, I have to give it to Spiderbaby. I again have to emphasize that I was expecting this to be a movie so bad that it was funny, I had no intention of getting smitten by the female lead or enthralled with Lon Chaney's performance. It was easily the movie that drew me in and never let me go, like a trap or snare of some sort. As to worst movie, I had two contenders that stood out above the rest. Beating Feeders and The Dunwich Horror by a landslide, were Intruders and Sir Noface. These movies were agonizing to watch and infuriating to remember. Intruders because of the squandered potential caused by what I can only assume as cowardice to create a truly evil female serial killer in 2015, and Sir Noface for the sheer sham nature of it. If I am to chose, I have to give it to Sir Noface. While Intruders was a constant disappointment, it at least didn't try to hornswoggle anyone looking for a scary documentary to pass a couple hours. So congrats to the winner and go to hell Chad Calek.
