- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit. No idea what took me so long to watch this, love everything Martin Mcdonagh touches and this is no different. In the same, black comedy vein as his previous two feature films, another masterpiece is put out! First film to watch this year and it's already one of my favorite films I've seen in 2019!
9.5/10 - DirectorJeremy DysonAndy NymanStarsSamuel BottomleyDeborah WastellAmy DoyleAfter receiving a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions, skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a terrifying trip.Love Andy Nymans work. Excited to see his directorial debut after hearing about the play. Quite scary in parts, although a few too many jump scares. I thought it was fairly creative in parts though and some ideas that I've not really seen. Was definitely missing something though, however a fairly solid film!
7/10 - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsYalitza AparicioMarina de TaviraDiego Cortina AutreyA year in the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.I was highly recommended this one... Maybe it's because my attention strayed a little bit during the film (very slow to start!) however it didn't resonate with me as much as it did with a most people. I appreciate what Cuaron was going for but felt like it was stretched out far too much and meandered too much to keep my attention...
The film is technically amazing though, not something I'm in a hurry to rewatch any time soon though...
5/10 - DirectorBenjamin ArfmannStarsKent OsborneDylan SprouseRae GrayA straight-edged teacher finds trouble when an honors student is willing to do anything to get an A.A bizarre plot with some very farfetched plot points, however I think the ending rooted it back in realism... An enjoyable watch, albeit extremely predictable and fairly one note.
6/10 - DirectorKyle BaldaPierre CoffinEric GuillonStarsSteve CarellKristen WiigTrey ParkerGru meets his long-lost, charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru, who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.Watched because Trey Parker...
Standard Despicable Me film. Visually great and loved Trey Parkers villian. Probably won't be revisiting anytime soon but does what it says on the tin!
5/10 - DirectorBoaz YakinStarsLuke PraelSamantha MathisDavid Aaron BakerA young boy becomes fascinated with the persona of his dead grandmother and is sent to an isolated boarding school for misfits run by a mysterious headmaster and his wife.An odd film... Still unsure if I liked it or not!
Strong young leads though!
5.5/10 - DirectorJason ReitmanStarsHugh JackmanVera FarmigaJ.K. SimmonsIn 1987, U.S. Senator Gary Hart's presidential campaign is derailed when he's caught in a scandalous love affair.Very slow start, but just before I started switching off, the drama starts! Whilst the film has very strong scenes in, it never really builds to a crescendo at the end, kinda just tapers off. As it's a biographical film, I can forgive it, but apart from a few standout scenes, felt fairly one note... Still enjoyed the top tier acting in the last 2/3rds though!
6.5/10 - DirectorWill WernickStarsEvan WilliamsAnnabelle StephensonElisabeth HowerSix friends test their intelligence when an escape room they participate in takes a dark and twisted turn.Meh Meh Meh. This movie is so generic I'm still not sure I've got the right one. Watched on Netflix and can see the credits line up but the trailers on IMDB for this are certainly not from this film!
Anyway, nice bit of gore but essentially a pointless watch...
3/10 - DirectorSam LevinsonStarsOdessa YoungAbraSuki WaterhouseAfter a malicious data hack exposes the secrets of the perpetually American town of Salem, chaos descends and four girls must fight to survive, while coping with the hack themselves. From the previews I wasn't actually that excited about this... However it was a bit better then I expected. Still not the best movie ever but I feel like it does what the director intended it to do. It's a very visceral, fun purge-like film, in fact I think it's a better purge film than the last few purge installments. Not something I'm instantly rewatching but wasn't too painful!
6.5/10 - DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. This one is a long time coming. I've always wanted to watch more studio ghibli films, and have only seen one (Grave of the Fireflies) which was emotional as hell!
Was a fun, very wonderous movie. Super creative people and the art is phenomenal. Deserves every bit of respect it gets. Whilst I did enjoy it, it's probably not something I'd rewatch in a hurry, but I'm glad I've seen it and I look forward to experiencing other Studio Ghibli films!
8/10 - DirectorJohn McPhailStarsElla HuntMalcolm CummingSarah SwireA zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.Big fan of Comedy Horror Musicals. Stage Fright was the last one I saw, which I actually enjoyed a bit more than this...
I thought the musical numbers were a little too pop-y and felt a little bit out of place at times. I still enjoyed it for what it is and there was a decent amounts of gore, which is always a bonus!
All in all, not the best musical in recent years but a fun viewing...
6/10 - DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsSteve CarellThe story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.Wow this film made a pretty powerful statement. Something provocative and leaves with a strong message. Had some really great scenes in and some really great ideas incorporated that I've not really seen in films of this nature.
Has some very clever writing and one of my favorite films I've watched in the last few years, it's left me in a state that not many films have before! Adam McKay you are a beast!
9/10 - DirectorDominique RocherStarsAnders Danielsen LieGolshifteh FarahaniDenis LavantThe morning after a party, a young man wakes up to find Paris invaded by zombies.A very interesting zombie movie. Whilst most will focus on the end-of-the-world scale aspect of it, this deals it through the eyes of one person. It's a very intimate film and brings a very real feel to the genre.
There's some extremely well shot scenes, especially some of the one shots that follow him around the apartment. The music making/performing was quite cool as well! I also really enjoyed how the zombies didn't really make much noise, like the loud grunting zombies we're used to and as well as that the film didn't have much score to it, which further added to the realism.
I didn't find it as captivating as I wanted though, and is definitely worth a watch. I don't think a second viewing will happen anytime soon though...
7/10 - DirectorSean AndersStarsMark WahlbergRose ByrneIsabela MercedA couple find themselves in over their heads when they foster three children.Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! Film has some genuinely funny moments and lots of larger than life characters in it. Nothing highly intelligent or cerebral but a really great "downtime" comedy, with a rather heartwarming story to take away from it. All in all enjoyable!
8/10 - DirectorAdam RobitelStarsTaylor RussellLogan MillerJay EllisSix strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive. It had some clever ideas in it and I really liked the idea of the first room and how the solution could've easily been destroyed by the reaction to the trap, it felt very self-contained. The rooms kinda got less and less inventive from there though to the point where it was still fun to watch but the actual trap/hazard wasn't really linked to said solution as well as the first. It therefore felt a little random and less of a mastermind and more of a "wouldn't it be cool if this happened then this happened then this happened!".
Also the ending was rubbish. I felt it was enjoyable enough of a movie until the ending where it just kinda fell flat on its face.
Great effects and action throughout regardless, especially in the pool bar! One of the best escape room films I've seen, although that's not saying a huge deal.
All in all a Watchable film if you skip the ending!
6.5/10 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyBruce WillisSamuel L. JacksonSecurity guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.Enjoyed the sequel and the coming together of 19 years of buildup from M Nights cinematic universe. I enjoy M nights unique perspective on a rather overdone cliche-ridden genre. I enjoyed what it was building up to in the future but feels like it's the ending of this trilogy of films. A brave but abrupt ending in again, these times of milking cash cows to death!
8/10 - DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodPatrick L. ReyesCesar De LeónA ninety-year-old horticulturist and Korean War veteran turns drug mule for a Mexican cartel.Loved Clint Eastwood directed films. Amongst some of my favorite films, and this one was no different. I love his portrayal of the generation gap in his films and his "old man vs dangerous people" schtick in his films (Gran Torino etc.).
9/10 - DirectorJon S. BairdStarsSteve CooganJohn C. ReillyShirley HendersonLaurel and Hardy, the world's most famous comedy duo, attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on what becomes their swan song: a grueling theatre tour of post-war Britain.Didn't like this as much as I thought I would. I didn't really find all that much funny in it and thus didn't see it as a comedy. I did however really like the realism and how close and accurately both Steve Coogan and John C. Reily portrayed Laurel and Hardy and it's just a great story of one of the most famous double acts and their ups and downs towards the end of their career. Great performances from both and is a great biographical film of them. Just felt missold as a comedy.
6/10 - DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRosa SalazarChristoph WaltzJennifer ConnellyA deactivated cyborg's revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.Enjoyed this one, although felt about half an hour too long! Never read any of the source material or seen anything prior to it. The visuals, as you'd expect from a blockbuster of this granduer, is amazing. Really beautiful visuals throughout and the acting was really great.
7.5/10 - DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardPhi VuTree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.Really enjoyed the first one. Love blumhouse and how their really holding it down on the horror/thriller front. Consistently putting out enjoyable films and being at the forefront of their craft.
Whilst I liked the first one a lot more than this, I still quite liked this. The whole science project gone wrong hook was a bit hokey but introduced us to a few more great characters and I really enjoyed the alternate reality storyline. Adding more weight to the protagonist. They do the groundhog day premise so well with a great slasher twist. Fun, self-aware and absolutely bonkers at time. This is more of the same of the original.
7/10 - DirectorHans Petter MolandStarsLiam NeesonLaura DernMicheál NeesonA grieving snowplow driver seeks out revenge against the drug dealers who killed his son.A fun black-comedy revenge film. Nothing too serious in this one and did enjoy it. Nothing that memorable about it or something I'd rewatch any time soon but it's still a very fun film for people who enjoy liam neeson revenge films.
7/10 - DirectorDan GilroyStarsJake GyllenhaalRene RussoZawe AshtonA thriller about the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.Meh bit disappointed on this one. went in expecting more. I did really like most of the death scenes in this, and enjoyed the performances (Who doesn't like a bit of gyllenhal?!) but I think the story as a whole just wasn't there. Something about it just didn't make me want to watch it again and I didn't really get it...
6.5/10 - DirectorJonas ÅkerlundStarsMads MikkelsenVanessa HudgensKatheryn WinnickA retiring assassin suddenly finds himself on the receiving end of a hit, contracted by none other than his own employer seeking to cash in on the pensions of aging employees.Meh, was really looking forward to watching this. Love Mads and love revenge flicks but this fell short for me. Not read the source material but it was all a bit mediocre and lots of glorified unnecessary sex...
Had some great visuals and death scenes though. Wouldn't watch again...
5/10 - DirectorMimi LederStarsFelicity JonesArmie HammerJustin TherouxThe true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.Enjoyed this one. Story about a very intelligent woman aspiring to be lawyer, a field that is almost entirely male-dominated and her struggles with sex discrimination in law. Really enjoyed it, especially as it didn't really shove anything down the viewers throat in terms of "propaganda" for lack of a better term.
Strong performances all through out!
7.5/10 - DirectorLee CroninStarsSeána KerslakeJames Quinn MarkeyKati OutinenA single mother living in the Irish countryside with her son begins to suspect he may not be her son at all, and fears his increasingly disturbing behavior is linked to a mysterious sinkhole in the forest behind their house.I went into this knowing nothing and came out rather surprised. The premise is bizarre and there's a lot of inconsistencies but I still enjoyed it. Nothing I'd rush out to watch again but I don't regret watching it.
6/10 - DirectorNicholas McCarthyStarsTaylor SchillingJackson Robert ScottPeter MooneyA mother concerned about her young son's disturbing behavior thinks something supernatural may be affecting him.Quite enjoyed this one. A chucky-like premise although the only issue I have with it, which is what most people disliked about it, is that they basically give you all the information at the start. There's no mystery about whats going on here, so there wasn't any interest added story-wise.
The horror bits I feel, were really great though. A few scenes especially, one being the hallway scene I thought was pretty good. A few geniunely creepy moments and the scene with the psychiatrist is one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen(heard) in a while... Something very disturbing and awkward listening to that.
The acting was great, visuals were cool. I think it's a great run of the mill horror films!
7/10 - DirectorChris FogginStarsJames PurefoyMeadow NobregaDavid HaymanTen fisherman from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album, "Sea Shanties."Not as bad as I was expecting it to be. Main draw was James Purefoy, who was great as always in it, some very powerful dramatic scenes from him (powerful in relation to the scope of the film). Have been on holiday to this place and I love the very unique community setting of places like this and how well it comes through on film.
Usually musicals (especially them on smaller budgets like this) have terrible jarring switches between the actual acting parts and the singing parts, this felt very natural and it was all done well.
I don't think it was anything special though and nothing I'd rush out to watch again.
6.5/10 - DirectorSacha GervasiStarsAnsel ElgortChloë Grace MoretzDavid StrathairnAfter his friend is murdered, a Washington, D.C. teenager undertakes his own investigation of the crime. Not much happening in this one. Both Ansel Elgort and Chloe Moetz Grace are two of my favorite young actors and I'm always up for this sort of plot in films. Unfortunately not much happens at all and it's all a bit lackluster...
5.5/10 - DirectorJeff WadlowStarsLucy HaleTyler PoseyViolett BeaneA harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone - or something - begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.I enjoyed some of the visuals in this. Had one or two decent death scenes but most were very average/boring. Still rather generic but not the worst mindless horror flick to watch!
6/10 - DirectorAustin VeselyStarsZazie BeetzChance the RapperRae GrayWhen a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: Ghosts? Drug dealers? A disgraced werewolf?Actually quite enjoyed this B movie. Had some funny parts in and going into it expecting a campy-B-horror, it is what it is!
6.5/10 - DirectorPeter HedgesStarsJulia RobertsLucas HedgesCourtney B. VanceA drug addicted teenage boy shows up unexpectedly at his family's home on Christmas Eve.Very dramatic film. Hadn't seen much coverage or promotion on this so went on a limb. Very strong performances from Lucas Hedges and Julia Roberts here. Tells the story of a recovering drug addict coming home for christmas from rehab to spend time with his family. The dynamic of their different relationships and how they interact is really great to watch. It's a bit of a bleak film, and there's no real happy ending, so feels very rooted in un-glorified reality.
7.5/10 - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsLupita Nyong'oWinston DukeElisabeth MossAdelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them. This was a pretty good film. I was very hyped about seeing this as I love Jordan Peeles work on everything.
Whilst it felt like it had very traditional horror values (especially the score!) it still felt very modern. There was a lot more humor in it than I was anticipating and although it all pretty much hit and got laughs, it felt a little bit too "funny", too much tension breaking... Felt more like a dark comedy at times then a straight up horror, but that could be what he was going for.
The idea was pretty fresh and original and I like how the trailers focused around one thing and the movie, whilst focusing around that, opened up to a whole different thing. Although some of the scenes in the trailer foretold the big twist (which was quite predictable anyway) it did a good job of hiding the majority of the story.
The twist ending, at first, felt shoehorned in... It left quite a bad taste in my mouth after watching it although now I've mulled it over more and read a few things clarifying it, it does make a lot more sense. Originally it was the most predictable twist but made no sense in comparison to the rest of the movie. For me it's still a little bit far fetched in that world, but sits with me a bit better.
Full of great little metaphors, very nice visuals and strong acting, I enjoyed this movie regardless of flaws in the story, even moreso after mulling it over which I'm sure most directors go for!
8.5/10 - DirectorJonah HillStarsSunny SuljicKatherine WaterstonLucas HedgesFollows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop. This was a pretty good movie for a directoral debut from Jonah Hill. One of his big influences was "This is England", and feels very much in the same sorta vein.
Had some rather disturbing parts in, as it centers around 13 year old Stevie. One of the final scenes being one of the more disturbing and "image provoking" scenes I've seen in a long while!
Whilst I'm probably not going to out and watch it again any time soon, it'll probably be a rewatch down the line. Very solid start to, hopefully, the start of Jonah Hills directing career!
7.5/10 - DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.Really enjoyed this movie! DC has always had a rocky history with their cinematic universe, especially compared to the behemoth that Marvel has become. I think this is a continuation of the (from what I've heard) good line of films they've put out recently (Aquaman, Wonder Woman).
Zachary Levi playing a child in an adult superheroes body seems like his calling. He's absolutely perfect for the part and plays it extremely well! The child actors were also really good, especially the two leads! Mark Strong was great as a villian, and as were all the supporting cast!
The ending/fights I felt dragged on far too long, I understand the need to show struggle but there were like 4/5 "final" fights between the hero and villian, to the point where it got quite tired. Regardless, the ending was really fun and the setup for future installments, I'm excited!
I think this is my favorite superhero film so far this year... Until Endgame reclaims that!
9/10 - DirectorJustin BaldoniStarsHaley Lu RichardsonCole SprouseMoises AriasA pair of teenagers with cystic fibrosis meet in a hospital and fall in love, though their disease means they must avoid close physical contact.Wasn't expecting much from this. Typical Teen romance film. Very melodramatic in places but I mean if you're going in to watch this film you're probably likely to not mind that anyway.
Had low expectations, it met them, and it was still quite a watchable film. The leads are all great and it does well to educate and bring attention, to what I didn't realize was a, rather deadly disease!
7/10 - DirectorTim BurtonStarsColin FarrellMichael KeatonDanny DeVitoA young elephant, whose oversized ears enable him to fly, helps save a struggling circus, but when the circus plans a new venture, Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath its shiny veneer. It's a typical disney movie! I kept nodding off quite a few times towards the end, it felt a little too long and dragging. Strong cast though and the CGI was fine, not the best I've seen which is a bit disappointing coming from such a pioneering behemoth of a film company. Doesn't really do much special and these live action remakes seem more and more like a cash grab, but it's a fun childrens film to go see.
6.5/10 - DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsJason ClarkeAmy SeimetzJohn LithgowDr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home.Never seen the original. Very tired when watching this so dropped off at a few points, but from what I did see it was a fairly fun and mildly scare horror flick. Bit on the generic side and a bit too cheesy at parts but entertaining enough. The side stories where more interesting than the main I thought and scarier too.
6.5/10 - DirectorBo BurnhamStarsElsie FisherJosh HamiltonEmily RobinsonAn introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.Saw this in the cinema and for the 3rd time (the other two I watched before UK cinematic release).
I really enjoy this film and what the realistic portrayal of both anxiety and being a teenager. The way that he portrays his own unique experience (what he went through the start of his stage stand-up comedy career) through the eyes of a teenage girl and everyday teenage angst is really something to behold.
It goes further than that though and adds to the base idea of this teenage girl with anxiety and touches on many other issues teenages go through.
A few points resonated with me and I think a lot of parents too, especially the fireside scene. Great film!
8/10 - DirectorJacques AudiardStarsJohn C. ReillyJoaquin PhoenixJake GyllenhaalEli and Charlie Sisters, an infamous duo of gunslinging assassins, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally in 1850s Oregon.Surprised at how little advertising this had! Had four huge headliners in and I really enjoyed this. Didn't read much into it but I really enjoyed it. Makes me want to watch and journey into more western films as I've always enjoyed the aesthetic and feel of western settings/small towns etc.
8/10 - DirectorKatrin GebbeStarsJulius FeldmeierSascha Alexander GersakAnnika KuhlInspired by horrifying true events, Nothing Bad Can Happen follows Tore, a young lost soul involved with an underground Christian punk movement who falls in with a dysfunctional family who test his seemingly unwavering faith. This was a slow movie but builds up to a real punch at the end. I've seen better versions of this storyline but the true story behind it is truly disturbing. The film adaption could've been a lot better though and left me feeling a little unfulfilled. I think the slow build till the end enhances the impact at the end slightly but also made me lose interest a bit, especially since you could see where it was going...
5.5/10 - DirectorNeil MarshallStarsDavid HarbourMilla JovovichIan McShaneCaught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. This was a really fun movie. The CG was pretty bad. Not seen the original 2 Hellboy films (never got round to watching them) however I take it it wasn't anything like it!
It was very very cheesy at times but what a gorefest. Amazed how this passed uncut as a 15, it's a very strong one. If you're expecting anything more than a fun, gory, b-movie level CG at times, you're going to be disappointed. If you just wanna relax and watch people, demons and anything that has blood inside get torn up and decimated, this is the film for you!
7.5/10 - DirectorAaron HorvathPeter Rida MichailStarsGreg CipesScott MenvilleKhary PaytonA villain's maniacal plan for world domination sidetracks five teenage superheroes who dream of Hollywood stardom.I actually quite enjoyed this. Not watched the cartoon (not much of an animated person!) but I think this may change. Really laughed at some of the marvel references and how they managed to clear them!
Some really good jokes and self-awareness of the entire DC franchise. Great story and message for children but also some funny stuff for the older people. It's a bit over-goofy and immature sometimes for anyone over the age of 10 to enjoy but it's a kids film so that can't really be a negative.
Fun movie though and glad I watched it! Wish I saw it in the cinema!
7/10 - DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotSix years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph," Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.I actually enjoyed this one. I know a few were disappointed with the sequel but I enjoyed how they opened the world of wreck-it ralph to the scale of the internet. Yes it was mainly a way for disney to flex their entire IP, but I enjoyed the way they did that. A bit surreal seeing some of the things they own in it like marvel, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it. The internet jokes and references were a little too dated but I imagine these films aren't made overnight.
I laughed at quite a few parts, so maybe I'm immature but a fun film for anyone who enjoys gaming or even just the internet in general!
7.5/10 - DirectorChris ButlerStarsHugh JackmanDavid WalliamsStephen FryMr. Link recruits explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, this trio of explorers travel the world to help their new friend.I found this a rather slow film at start. Nothing really too funny (even with a cinema of children being the main audience).
When it got going it was decent but nothing I'd watch again.
5/10 - DirectorNeil JordanStarsIsabelle HuppertChloë Grace MoretzMaika MonroeA young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda toward her.I really quite enjoyed this. Whilst I liked chloes acting very much (altho I'm a major fanboy) Isabelle as Greta, there was something that didn't fit right. Maybe it was the accent but it made her whole act fall quite flat. Like the scene in the resturant (from the trailers) felt more comical than "this woman is crazy". It wasn't too bad in the more tame scenes when she's the sweet old woman but when she gets crazier I tended to just shut off and it never felt that tense.
Thankfully Chloe Grace Moretz acting bought back some of that tenseness and she played the scared stalkee pretty good!
Great music though and a pretty good story, even though it's one that's been done a bunch of times. Another point that I kinda disliked is some of the subtle things that happen, I smiled to myself about and it was a bit of clever writing but then they re-emphasise it 3 or 4 more times until it becomes handfisted. Felt overwritten and dumbed down but yeah, pretty decent film!
7/10 - DirectorMichael ChavesStarsLinda CardelliniRaymond CruzPatricia VelasquezIgnoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.Another conjuring universe film... Pretty much what you'll expect from it. The trailers were pretty cool, as I do enjoy these movies. They are starting to tire me a little though. I really liked the Insidious series and the first few Conjuring films. When they first came out they were so refreshing and became the standard for modern horror. Super scary, great camera work/cinematography and set pieces.
However, now they've established a universe and there's about 10 different spin offs and sequels and prequels. They all follow the same formulaes and scare tactics as the previous ones. It's like they play madlibs with a template script.
Some of the build ups are fun and interesting (umbrella scene) but it's not totally new and whilst interesting, it's very obvious what's happening.
Hopefully they'll start slowing down on churning out conjuring/insidious templates and they'll focus on creating new and interesting horrors to create a new standard of horror, like conjuring/insidious did.
