- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge. If there's a Wes Anderson movie released in a year, there's a 99% chance it will be my #1. As always he crafts a wonderful movie to watch on many different levels. The dialogue is fun, the set design is like no other, the actors are stellar, and the story is whimsical in all the right ways. It's amazing that one filmmaker can keep doing great movie after great movie (with the exception of Darjeeling) and keep making them of such a high quality. Anderson fans thought that Moonrise Kingdom was one of the only times that Anderson would be considered for an Oscar, but then Budapest rolls along and shows that he's not done making fantastic movies yet! No director has been this consistent in all their catalogue!
- DirectorDoug LimanStarsTom CruiseEmily BluntBill PaxtonA soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies. This one blew me away. The trailers made it look like just another mediocre alien/robot action movie with a Groundhog Day twist, but it was far from that. Everything from the action scenes, to the dialogue is a blast to watch and experience. For an action movie the cinematography is stellar and the plot is just so well thought out. The ending is a little weak, but holy crap is this just an all around fantastic action movie!
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.I've loved almost all of Fincher's movies with the exception of stuff like Benjamin Button and Alien. When I found out he wasn't doing an original movie after Dragon Tattoo, I was kind of disappointed. I hadn't heard of Gone Girl the book at all and how big it was. But I saw it anyways because I love the man's work, and this is yet another masterfully crafted movie of his. He really gets the dark atmosphere right in his movies and does a great job of making them feel like no other. A middling director could make this movie and it would just feel like another run of the mill thriller even with the same well done script, and it wouldn't be half as good. This is probably Affleck's best performance and it is for sure Rosamund Pike's breakout role. Sure she's been around a while, but damn did she kill it here. Definitely a performance that needed an Oscar. I know Trent Reznor has done Fincher's past three movies including this one, you'd think it would be a collaboration that had run its course, but it hasn't. Reznor's music and Fincher go hand in hand. It's almost like a Spielberg and Williams collab, but the dark and gritty version of that. I honestly think that Reznor could score the rest of Fincher's career and each would be fantastic and it would never get old.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChris PrattWill FerrellElizabeth BanksAn ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis.I will admit, I was one who crapped on this when the trailer first came out. It looked like a lame cash grab by a corporation to make a movie off their brand. But I was surely wrong thanks to the writing and directing of Lord and Miller. Everything here is so well done. Stellar animation that everyone admits they thought was stop motion at first. The comedy is just right and it's silly in a way that adults can enjoy just as much as kids. It's easily one of the best animated movie to ever grace the silver screen.
