- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.One of the most mesmerizing movies I had seen for a while when this came out. It's masterfully shot by Alex Garland and has an atmosphere like no other. The set design of the house is amazing and adds a great mood to it. There is one scene in particular that used music in such a way that I almost felt like I was panicking as the character was. His follow-up Annihilation was well made and effected me, but overall the movie didn't hold a flame to this masterpiece.
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.Pixar had a bit of a lull with too many Cars movies, Monsters U, and Brave so I was worried maybe they had peaked. I was wrong. No Pixar movie has made me this emotional or nostalgic for being a kid. They do a fantastic job of making you realize how memory works and they really make you come to your senses about how memories make us who we are. It's a powerful movie that studies how people become who they are because of their past and that you doubtfully will change and forget stuff from your past with out even realizing it. It's amazing that it works as a kids adventure movie, but then all the adults are having an emotional breakdown with the kids not understanding the deeper part of it at all.
- DirectorPaul KingStarsHugh BonnevilleSally HawkinsJulie WaltersA young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven.Just a goddamn delight to watch. It's a shame that this and the sequel did poorly in the US, as they're the most charming movies around. They're even beautifully shot and well directed for sure.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.Star Wars is back and good again! I get all the criticism of how this movie is just a retread of A New Hope, but even if it borrows a similar plot structure it's still one hell of a blast to see. Abrams and crew really do a great job of bringing this universe into modern filmmaking. Sure the prequels came before it, but none of those movies had the feel of the Star Wars universe from the classic original trilogy. This one and TLJ capture that feeling in tone and in the spectacular set design. Finn is the weakest part of this movie and I'm glad that Rey is the lead here and not him. With Abrams back for IX, I hope they don't play it safe for the Skywalker finale.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. This is one of those movies that does a fantastic job of making you feel like you are in the action. The long takes that move across the land scape and action really make this movie feel like it's really happening on the screen. It's a movie of little dialogue overall, but the image speaks for itself. Glad DiCaprio finally got his statue!
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.A powerhouse performance from Larson AND Tremblay make this movie what it is. I'm glad she got the Oscar, but I kind of feel like Tremblay deserved one too.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.A really fun adventure in the Marvel universe that just doesn't quite fully hit the spot. It's entertaining as hell and funny, but there is just something missing here that most of the Marvel movies that people remember have. It might be the direction, or possibly the script. It's still a great movie and a good watch.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsMichael FassbenderKate WinsletSeth RogenSteve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac.Screw that Ashton Kutcher movie from a few years back, this is the one to watch. It's not a typical bio-pic. Rather than spanning over a whole career, it takes 3 points from Jobs' life, each before a big product launch, and creates great dialogue sets from each. This movie's strength is it's script, and Sorkin was the man to do it. It's no secret that Jobs may not have been the greatest person, but he was a driven one that made it happen. A good Sorkin movie is one that can make you enjoy watching a subject that you'd otherwise not care to watch a movie about. This and The Social Network are both prime examples. I'd never think in a million years I'd consider a movie about the creation of Facebook to be one I'd watch over and over. It's so good because of Sorkin and the respective directors.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittCharlotte Le BonBen KingsleyIn 1974, high-wire artist Philippe Petit recruits a team of people to help him realize his dream: to walk the immense void between the World Trade Center towers.Zemeckis' best movie since a long long time. It's a unique story about a man who did the unthinkable and who experienced something that no one in the world will ever experience again. It's a shame it got forgotten by many as it's a really heartfelt story that everyone should see.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.An okay to pretty good entry into the MCU. As a follow up to the first movie it's a bit lacking. It still has some great scenes, but Ultron as a baddie just felt weak and his whole story just wasn't that interesting to see the Avengers take on. Whedon did a fantastic job with the team's banter and interaction and it's still the strongest part of the movie. It's just the story around it that lacks. Still a pretty good movie and worth a watch for the characters for sure.
