2013 in Film
All The Films I've Watched (For The First Time) In 2013! Aiming to watch like 300. Obviously I can't watch one every single day because sometimes I'd be on holiday, out, tired or on small breaks but I barely sleep somedays so I watch a few films sometimes...
Will be accompanied by a small review and score, mainly for my own benefit but I am no film expert (I do study film so I know basics but I'm not a critic by any length).
7+ are films I'd watch again...
5- are films I wouldn't watch again...

- DirectorMark TonderaiStarsJennifer LawrenceElisabeth ShueMax ThieriotAfter moving with her mother to a small town, a teenager finds that an accident happened in the house at the end of the street. Things get more complicated when she befriends a boy. A double murder is not an accident. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Fairly good with a weird but nice twist at the end. Although I guessed a little as the story progressed, it was just a "what if" moment. Made sense and it was well made. Some decent scenes and acting by Jennifer Lawrence and Max Theirot.
6.5/10 - DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsChase WilliamsonRob MayesPaul GiamattiA new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return no longer human. Can two college drop-outs save humanity from this silent, otherworldly invasion?Low budget but really awesome, somewhat of a *beep* Alternate realities, giant insects and a monster made from meat! Fun movie though and awesome acting especially from the leads.
8.5/10 - DirectorXavier GensStarsLauren GermanMichael BiehnMilo VentimigliaSurvivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.Weird pace to the film begins in the central part of the story just at the end of the atomic bombs and then it's 2 hours which is quite slow paced ... Although deeply disturbing in some parts, especially the change of appearance of the brothers throughout the film and of course the rape and torture, still quite an entertaining film... Left a little shocked and I'm not usually shocked at much!
Lacked a lot of things but the acting was top notch...
6/10 - DirectorBob SagetStarsSamuel L. JacksonAlyson HanniganBob SagetA mockumentary that illuminates penguin survival and mating rituals, as well as one bird's search for love while on a seventy-mile trek with his hedonistic buddies.Writing this at the 40 minute point... Made me slightly smile a few times but apart from that it's bad, a great concept but not a very good script. God knows how they got people like Samuel L. Jackson and Whoopie Goldberg into the project...
Not the worst spoof I've ever seen (Cough Cough Disaster Movie) but close.
1/10 - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittBruce WillisEmily BluntIn 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.Wow, didn't expect to like this one despite Joseph Gordon-Levitt being a great actor for me, I'm not one for massive sci-fi films, they usually are too over the top. This was just right in all respects. Time-travel as a concept can be a very complicated confusing thing and to make a film about can lead to massive plot holes and very hard to not become confusing. This didn't run the risk of becoming that and made the whole thing somewhat simple without dumbing it down. It kept me engaged all throughout the movie and the ending is great and unexpected, but at the same time obvious?
Great acting especially from the kid in the film (without spoiling too much)!
9/10 - DirectorRandall ColeStarsNick StahlMia KirshnerDevon SawaA young couple find themselves in an unnerving situation with a mysterious stalker. It's a good concept of this type of movie to be a "found footage" genre, it's a lot less "cinematic" and more real. However, there were many points in the film I would have liked to be a lot more cinematic especially because the same static camera shots in the film proves to get boring after half the movie. The plot is out there, no doubt about that, but some of the scenarios presented in the movie were really pushing you to suspend your disbelief (Usually I don't have trouble with it) i.e. the installment of the cameras in places and the fact that the stalker could enter the house with someone upstairs and the person upstairs not hear the door opening and closing but hear a knock or small bang...
Anyway, it had it's moments and it had a very eerie and creepy atmosphere at times but it was ruined by inconsistencies and some bad acting (It was too dull).
3.5/10 - DirectorChris MooreStarsDon McManusRyanne DuzichTeddy DunnWhilst celebrating a graduation at a secluded vacation home, a group of college students find themselves targeted by a sadistic killer who forces them to play a deadly game of killing one another in order to survive. The first 30 minutes or so was dullbut when the story got into the main stage it was fun for a while but I couldn't help thinking it dried up after a few deaths despite many twists and turns. However, the ending of the film was great, the story really comes together and it's not just another mediocre film. Without the ending it'd be about a 3 or 4 now with the ending I'd give it a 6!
6/10 - DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.Had this for a year or so but never got round to watching it despite high praise I've heard from many people... Thank god I did today. Strong performances all around, was glad to see Kevin Spacey in the film and such a creepy performance. I thought the story and direction was consistently good and the pacing was great. Nothing to fault, however for some reason I felt a little empty at the end, almost a "is this it?" sort of feeling but don't get me wrong the end twist was great (as well as a few throughout). Apart from that going up there as one of my favorite films, possible the best serial killer film I've seen...
9.5/10 - DirectorAnders Thomas JensenStarsNikolaj Lie KaasMads MikkelsenLine KruseTwo Danish friends are tired of their employer and open their own butcher shop. An electrician accidentally dies in the freezer and he's sold as marinated chicken and business picks up. What happens when they run out of "chicken"?Dutch movie about two butchers who are struggling to set up there own butcher shop after leaving their previous job due to there cocky boss. Great movie, directing, writing etc. Acting was superb! Not much else to say, maybe think twice about visiting butcher shops in europe! 8.5/10
- DirectorDennis DuganStarsChris FarleyNicollette SheridanRobin ShouA man tries to rescue a woman with a little help from his half brother.Maybe I was just anticipating too much but I didn't like it much. A few laughs here and there but nothing that really stood out for me... Nothing to really re-watch for unfortunately.
2/10 - DirectorAdam GreenStarsKane HodderJoel David MooreDeon RichmondWhen a group of tourists in a New Orleans haunted swamp tour find themselves stranded in the wilderness, their evening of fun and spooks turns into a horrific nightmare.Excited about this one, unfortunately I wasn't too impressed :/.
First of all you have to go in knowing this really isn't a serious film and I mean that in a somewhat self-parodic way. Everything is cliched and cheesy but I think that's the intended way it was to be received... at least I hope it was.
I understand what it was trying to do, if it was that, but honestly it didn't do it for me. One or two laughs here and there but just nowhere near what I expected of it.
2/10 - DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.Picked it up a few months ago after hearing raving reviews from everyone and never got round to watching it... It was pretty scary but a lot of jump scares in the last quarter. That being said it's quite psychological and slow moving in towards the middle with them descending the cave, almost like 2 movies... It was very well made and it had a gritty and almost realistic feel to it that British horror has. Up there with the 28 days later series and maybe not as good but near Eden lake! Glad I bought on DVD!
9/10 - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.Wow... It's a strong comedy but it doesn't feel like a comedy somehow. The dry humor is fantastic and it had just the right level as not to go overboard and become trashy. Very well written with several twists and it leaks originality, whenever it build up to something we've already seen it surprises us with something different. The casting was perfect and so was the acting, Not really a bad performance from one person. Colin Farrel playing well with Sam Rockwell as the leads.
Probably the best film I've seen this year! Will have to check out In Bruges...
9.5/10 - DirectorClint EastwoodStarsKevin CostnerClint EastwoodLaura DernA kidnapped boy strikes up a friendship with his captor, an escaped convict on the run from the law, while the search for him continues.Great film with Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood. Haven't seen many Eastwood films and I heard this is his directing debut?
Regardless a really good film with some great messages in. Kevin Costner makes a great good/bad guy with the ability to create a likable character and still be a criminal and the kid in the film really came out half-way through. Running time could have probably been cut down a bit and the pacing was fairly slow after a fast start but nevertheless a good film and nearly had me tearful at the end!
8/10 - DirectorM.J. BassettStarsAdelaide ClemensKit HaringtonSean BeanWhen her adoptive father disappears, Sharon Da Silva is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.meh... It wasn't as good as the original silent hill, not by a long shot. It had several creepy moments as you'd expect from anything silent hill but it wasn't consistent and it wasn't tense or anything like the original. Also I wasn't that drawn in to this and lost focus several times in the film :/ It wasn't a bad movie and had a few nice moments in it but comparing with the original it didn't come anywhere as near...
5/10 - DirectorGen SekiguchiStarsTadanobu AsanoReika HashimotoKyôko KoizumiFive bizarre stories with no apparent connection to one and other eventually become intertwined, resulting in surreal circumstances.A bizarre film with 5 main storylines that interweave within each other. The stories were great and original, you have a guy who is constantly trying to kill his wife, another guy who is left hypnotized to think he is a bird after the hypnotist is killed mid-show etc. Despite the hilarious looking exterior of the film with wacky sequences there is quite a lot of message underneath it all. Like most films I've seen out of Japan they wackyness always has some kind of metaphorical meaning, being just under 2 hours I think it'll take a few times to fully take in what is going on, however my first viewing I found it quite moving towards the end. A lot of things suggesting love and valuing people. Great film!
Some reason Vinnie Jones seemed a little weak on the acting? maybe it was just the contrast in style that Japan has and Vinnie is used to, or maybe it's just me seeing Vinnie is different roles, it just kind of stuck out in a bad way however it didn't detract from the film...
9/10 - DirectorBrian HooksDeon TaylorStarsAustin BasisChris BlasmanJonathan ChaseFinals at the prestigious University of Dreyskill are finally over and it's time to party. "The Crew", as they are known by their peers and dorm mates, are invited to a rich classmate's hideaway mansion high up in the hills of Colorado. What was supposed to be a weekend of fun and relaxation quickly becomes a trip they will never forget, if they survive. A simple game of prank scare phone calls becomes an intense game of survival and escape when one of the Crew members accidentally calls the wrong person. What can I say? Cliched... or in some cases rip-off. A pretty bad rip-off of most slashers. At the start it's almost exactly like Scream.
First of all the story is too unjustified? I don't mind unlikely storylines but some coming to kill off teens just because of a prank phone call? Granted he could be psychotic in the first place but the film didn't explore any of that... That's not the worst part of the story though, the serial killer aspect was totally ditched half-way through despite it being set-up and it just turns into another teen slasher.
Cliched characters, bad acting etc. Nothing really worth it, the effects weren't bad and sure their was a good bit of gore but after 1 decapitation they all just become boring...
2/10 - DirectorKeenen Ivory WayansStarsShawn WayansMarlon WayansKerry WashingtonA wannabe-dad mistakes a vertically-challenged criminal on the lam for his newly-adopted son.Little brothers film... Didn't laugh once :/ didn't really see anything funny, maybe the restaurant scene at the start could've been funny but that's what you get with the Wayans now days... All pretty much flops and unfunny...
1/10 - DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsShia LaBeoufDavid MorseCarrie-Anne MossWhen a teenager is placed under house arrest, he succumbs to despair and starts spying on his neighbors, hoping to spice up his life. This, however, leads him to witness a serial killer on the loose.A nice straight forward movie. The story is fine nothing really complex in the sense of twists and turns and it has a lot of cliches in but the story keeps you interested and it is quite ambiguous until the last act of the film where it gets action packed. A nice suspense type film and the pacing although seems slow, doesn't get boring and it's well acted. Nothing really stand-out however it's a great movie.
7/10 - DirectorJohn PaysonStarsJerry O'ConnellMegan WardBilly WestA nice guy has just moved to New York and discovers that he must share his run-down apartment with a couple thousand singing, dancing cockroaches. It's a fun film... It's somewhat like Alvin and the Chipmunk for a older audience i.e. young teens...
Watch it with my younger brother, there were some funny moments in but it is MTV so a lot of stuff was bad in it. I did think some of the stuff they did regarding cinematography was great though, a lot more creative then the stuff they do now! I'd watch it over any of there modern-day stuff but I don't know if I'd watch it again...
6/10 - DirectorKaare AndrewsAngela BettisHélène CattetStarsIngrid Bolsø BerdalIván GonzálezKyra ZagorskyA 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.A great concept for an anthology film. Directors from around the world making a short film about death (Usually horror) based around a Letter in the alphabet that they had i.e. A for Apocolypse, B for Bigfoot.
It was kinda fun to watch and try and guess what the topic was because it brang it up on the end. The film was very up and down, which is expected. Some things appealed to me more then others.
D was probably the best shot and I found Q as probably my favorite, probably because I like that type of humor. T was also awesome.
There were some really weird films and the film included a nazi stripper cat seducing a dog, a lesbian who has a fart fetish for her teacher and Z I had to fast forward through because that was a little too weird. L is pretty distasteful as well but then again pretty much all of them were...
All in all it had some nice segments and there's something for everyone I think. If every movie was consistent in quality then it would be the best anthology I've seen but it wasn't.
5/10 - DirectorJohn Stalberg Jr.StarsMatt BushSean MarquetteAdrien BrodyA high school valedictorian who gets baked with the local stoner finds himself the subject of a drug test. The situation causes him to concoct an ambitious plan to get his entire graduating class to face the same fate, and fail. Not a bad stoner film actually. Usually they are unwatchable and cliched and whilst this one had cliches it was still fun and had some original things I hadn't seen done before. The plot is great and actually funny, the acting is also pretty good (for a stoner film) which it's usually non-existent for a film like that, Adrian Brody playing the psycho stoner guy who they steal from. No I wasn't in stitches the whole way through but i laughed quite a bit throughout... What?
A nice film to waste 100 mins with nothing really amazing.
7/10 - DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.Awesome kids film ha. Well not even kids film it's very much a gamers film with a lot of game references that would go straight over kids heads such as leroy jenkins and all your base are belong to us.
Even if you're not a gamer not a gamer it's enjoyable. The basic story of the guy that people don't like wants to be accepted is done a lot in animated kids movies now but I've never seen it done like this... Enjoyable disney film and hopefully not the last one this year!
8/10 - DirectorJulian GilbeyStarsAlec NewmanEd SpeleersMelissa GeorgeA group of mountaineers in the Scottish Highlands discover a kidnapped girl and are pursued by her captors. At the start of the movie I wasn't that involved in it, it wasn't great to begin with. This changes however as it leads into the second half of the film and you start seeing the bigger picture. It has some interesting elements and I think it stays away from common cliches, or at least tries. The writing wasn't great and sometimes the acting was off (especially in the first half) but as it reaches the climax it all comes together. Nice little british horror and would be a really good british horror if the first half was as strong as the latter.
6.5/10 - DirectorMarcus DunstanStarsJosh StewartAndrea RothJuan FernándezDesperate to repay his debt to his ex-wife, an ex-con plots a heist at his new employer's country home, unaware that a second criminal has also targeted the property, and rigged it with a series of deadly traps.Really liked this! When the movie started kicking in the atmosphere was constantly scary and it didn't have to rely on constant jump scares, what horrors nowadays are pretty much made of. Yes, they're a few but it's not dependent on it. Josh Stewart is one of my favorite actors, after seeing him as one of the strongest actors in "no ordinary family" as a same sort of Bad/Good guy as here. He plays it well and he's actually likable and that's what you need in horror movies to make them effective! (Not jump scares!). There was plenty of gore and whilst a lot wasn't needed, it may put people off but I didn't think it effected it much!
8/10 - DirectorVictor SalvaStarsGina PhilipsJustin LongJonathan BreckA brother and sister driving home through isolated countryside for spring break encounter a flesh-eating creature which is in the midst of its ritualistic eating spree.Liked this! Very creepy movie throughout and a good pace as well, it moves quite fast but it's still suspenseful. Can be a little cheesy in some parts but there's some genuine scary parts... The old soundtrack is great as well and adds to the creepiness...
Nothing really bad to say though...
8.5/10 - DirectorVictor SalvaStarsJonathan BreckRay WiseNicki AycoxSet a few days after the original, a championship basketball team's bus is attacked by The Creeper, the winged, flesh-eating terror, on the last day of his 23-day feeding frenzy.Liked this too. Not as good as the original, mainly because it didn't have the same atmosphere. In this one there were a school bus full off high school students who were being pursued, whereas the first one it was mainly 2 people which was scarier. It also didn't have as much suspense as the first one, whilst the first one was a suspense and horror this was more of an action creature feature type film. However it didn't ruin the enjoyment and before it got into the main part it was good and had some scary moments and I really like the last 5 minutes. I also liked the side story arc of the guy out for revenge then the main. All in all a decent sequel.
6.5/10 - DirectorMarcus DunstanStarsJosh StewartEmma FitzpatrickChristopher McDonaldA man who escapes from the vicious grips of the serial killer known as "The Collector" is then forced to help rescue an innocent girl from the killer's booby-trapped lair. Not as good as I anticipated after watching the original. The original was decent, this was half-decent. I enjoyed the ending though and the fact that Josh Stewart still had the lead role. It has the same kind of style as the first one however it can come off a little MTVish and Tacky. If the ending was really bad then I wouldn't have liked the film and hopefully it won't drag into another sequel as I think 2 is more then enough. Again gore is probably even worse as the original as well as bodycount (up about 5000%!) this time it seemed more like for shock value like most of the Saws.
6/10 - DirectorPeter RamseyStarsHugh JackmanAlec BaldwinIsla FisherWhen the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. Not a bad film. Didn't pay as much attention to it but I watched most of it. Little brother watched it all... Basically it's an action-packed kids film and I mean action packed! ha, it does contain a lot of action for a childs film but not too much. The villian voiced brilliantly by Jude Law, actually genuinely creeped me out as well and not many things do! It is a little dark in parts but I've noticed kids films are getting quite dark nowadays!
Overall 7/10 - DirectorSimon WestStarsCamilla BelleTommy FlanaganKatie CassidyDuring a babysitting gig, a high-school student is harassed by an increasingly threatening prank caller. Not seen the Original but this one could've done a whole lot better. The start (first 5-6 minutes) wasn't too bad a little cliche but it was okay. Then it got bad, I'm not one to spot many mistakes but it got to the point where it really annoyed me. The alarm system seemed to be malfunctioning, the owners of the house must have exceptional phone technology to be able to have caller ID for people they don't even know and the list goes on. It's just hasn't really been thought of great, the writing is mostly bad and the acting isn't great. It all took me out of the movie. The villian however was the best thing about this film in my opinion. From when he shows up the film got slightly better but unfortunately not enough to save the film...
3.5/10 - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi. Finally watched this after having it for a month. Should've watched it earlier, the running time is a little longer then the average Tarantino flick but he filled it well and kept you interested. I'm a big Tarantino fan and he has made some masterpieces over the years and this is another one! The directing and writing is perfect and you can see his unique style in both especially when it comes to his dark humor. One of the funniest scenes I've seen for awhile in a movie was the KKK scene, it actually has Jonah Hill in who I don't think is funny anymore but he did pretty well although it's only a small part as it's a small scene... this film has it all though you've got humor all throughout, the drama, the violence and everything else you expect from him. I also like Christopher Waltz's character, he is very likable and well written as well as Leonardo Dicapro as the main villian in the movie. Samuel L. Jackson also plays a great role which is another strong point. Acting is strong all round.
This and Seven Physcopaths are the best films this year but I think Django Unchained just tops it. Nothing really bad to say...
10/10 - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonCiarán HindsAfter a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.From the writer/director that bought you Seven Psychopaths, this is his debut feature and what a debut! (I saw 7P before this) It has the same type of humor, it's almost his auteur. It's hard to explain but it's exactly the humor I like. Colin Farrel plays a great part as a hitman, who after his first job went wrong, Ralph Fienne's character sends him off to bruge with his partner for a few days.
A few surprises along the way with some top quality writing and acting. I'm looking forward to future releases from Martin McDonagh as his first 2 films are now 2 of my favorite films ever. Hopefully he'll carry this on!
9.5/10 - DirectorPete TravisStarsKarl UrbanOlivia ThirlbyLena HeadeyIn a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.This was received highly by a lot of people. Usually I'm a fan of things like this but this was not great for me. Honestly I think it's far too overrated for a below-average action flick. The writing was cheesy and cliche, I'm not sure what to think about a lot of the production as well. It's supposed to be in the future but they apprehend suspects with cable ties? They held futuristic guns, armor etc. but no futuristic equipment to keep them apprehended? thus leading to the guy getting away with anderson... Also all the cars except for Dredds bike are pretty much the middle-class kind of cars we have now. I understand it's a poorer part but surely they'd still have better cars?
Anyway, the acting was reasonable but everything else fell flat. Even the effects were bad, it looked like a video game but it was done badly. I thought only a few effects things looked quite good... Maybe my expectations were too high? but it's just another mediocre action flick for me...
3/10 - DirectorTommy O'HaverStarsElliot PageHayley McFarlandNick SearcyThe true story of suburban housewife Gertrude Baniszewski, who kept a teenage girl locked in the basement of her Indiana home during the 1960s.Powerful film... I haven't heard/seen the real-life incident until I found this movie. Shocking to think this actually took place and is scary to think that this could happen... If it happened like the movie and the parents just let this women look after them for months then it'd be a stupid decision on there behalf but even then the abuse of power and the fear the mother instills in her children to commit these crimes is scary, it kind of acts as a reflection on society obviously not to this extent though... I am intrigued about the story behind it and I'm not afraid to say I was tearful at the end... Great film that takes it out of you emotionally.
8/10 - DirectorSteve OedekerkStarsSteve OedekerkFei LungLeo LeeA rough-around-the-edges martial arts master seeks revenge for his parents' death.Heard about this for a long time, I'm a fan of his Thumbs! series and also stephen chow so this seemed perfect for me. Whilst not on the same level as Stephen Chow it was still a fun film with some memorable scenes in and it was funny! Wasn't well received but this seems to have a large following nevertheless. Not an amazing film but it was good, trashy fun.
6/10 - DirectorJohn SimpsonStarsKatheryn WinnickLaura BreckenridgeJessica LucasThree women are stalked by a killer with a grudge that extends back to the girls' childhoods. Not that bad of a film. It has many flaws including how it was edited together. It looks almost like an anthology of films rather then 1 film however at the end it does it's best to try tying it altogether. It did have many cliches but it was shot very well and had genuinely creepy parts, most notably the clown segment. I don't watch many killer clown films so I wouldn't know if that bit of the script was from this film or if it just ripped it off another film but I've read it around the internet and thinking about it is pretty scary.
Effects are okay and it doesn't have too much gore in however it still satisfies in that aspect when it does happen. I hate to admit I fell for the same twist twice, I liked it the first time and the second time it was just as good but the third time I caught on and it had been exhausted. there are many flaws in the plot and stupid things people did but it wasn't a bad film, I would watch it again!
6/10 - DirectorJim DrakeStarsSteve GuttenbergBubba SmithMichael WinslowThe misfit Police Academy (1984) graduates now are assigned to train a group of civilian volunteers to fight crime once again plaguing the streets. If you like the PA series this is no different. They do re-use some gags but not enough to really be put off, they have enough stuff to carry on and still make it fresh and funny. They introduce new crazy characters, one of the funniest being the granny who loves conflict. Not much more to say, maybe not as funny as the first few but it still has the PA laughs within!
6.5/10 - DirectorAlan MyersonStarsBubba SmithDavid GrafMichael WinslowThe Police Academy's commandant will be honored at a police convention in Miami Beach. At the airport he picks a wrong bag with stolen diamonds. The "owners" want them back. Not as good as the preceding ones, a lot more jokes were re-used and it got a big lazy in some parts but they still had a good amount of visual gags and jokes for people.
Sad to see Bobcat and Murdoch not in this one which I think taking out a main character it suffered a little but it still had enough to watch.
5/10 - DirectorElizabeth BanksSteven BrillSteve CarrStarsEmma StoneStephen MerchantRichard GereA series of interconnected short films follows a washed-up producer as he pitches insane story lines featuring some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.Wow... This was a flop in all aspects. First of all I'm just going to say this isn't the worst movie I've seen. It's better then most of the spoof films we have most days, but that isn't much of a achievement. I was excited to go to watch this after seeing all the stars on the trailers. I'm confused as to how they got them all, I heard that some were blackmailed and/or pushed into it? but that's probably just rumors. Yes it had very little humor in it and it's a shame because they could've actually created a great movie with all these celebrities if only they had a good writer... Big disappointment.
3/10 - DirectorMary HarronStarsChristian BaleJustin TherouxJosh LucasA wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.Amazing movie. Didn't expect to like it this much, I knew it'd be good but this was near perfect for me. Bale plays a great leading role as the successful, self-obsessed and emotionless Patrick Bateman as he struggles against his psychotic tendencies. It was a powerful film for me to see how sinister and deep he got into this psychosis state and the fact everyone was naive to it even though the signs were in plain view. I have heard wonders about the book so I'm interested in reading that now but this was as good as it gets, great writing, great acting and some of the cinematography was amazing. Some really memorable scenes!
9.5/10 - DirectorYukihiko TsutsumiStarsMaho NonamiEiko KoikeMaki TsujimuraTwo actresses who have auditioned for one part, sharing the same apartment with opposite personalities equals a night which either neither of them will forget - if they survive!Wow, Love films like this that are very minimalism and don't rely on massive budgets to entertain. It's moves at quite a slow pace if you consider the just over an hour running time but it's not boring slow. It's unbelievable to know that this was the result of a drunken proposition and only took a week to make (was part of the 'Duel Project' where two directors had to make a film in one setting with 2 people fighting in 1 week)! I'm going to have to watch the other movie.
I've always been a massive fan of Asian cinema and I must say they are much better then say American Cinema regarding consistency in quality. They seem to make great film after great film whereas america usually brings out a really memorable film maybe twice a year if that.
9/10 - DirectorBen RockStarsCarlos BernardMathew St. PatrickRockmond DunbarA group enters a supermarket at closing time, shoots around and takes hostages. They believe aliens have arrived there then. Cops arrive outside. From the opening credits it looks like a bad low budget film but it actually looks very decent so don't let them fool you! I actually liked this, the writing was good, the acting was pretty good as well. There were a few cliches and flaws but it wasn't bad. The twist at the end is nice as well, didn't expect it. A few bits of annoying camera work but all in all a very decent film.
7.5/10 - DirectorAndrew AdamsonStarsErica LinzIgor ZaripovLutz HalbhubnerA young woman is entranced by an aerialist. When they fall into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil and are separated, they travel through the different tent worlds trying to find each other. Was not as good as I expected. Hearing rave reviews from the actual cirque du soleil stage shows and this movie I've always wanted to see them. I didn't think it translated well to screen probably because I've seen many films with these big special effects and whatnot I think the fact that many of the performers have no wires or anything doesn't translate to screen, it seems much less spectacular then it actually is. Some sets were nice and the costumes but it didn't really sit well with me as most of the time my attention was straying (and I've watched 4-5 hour films without losing interest). That being said I'm sure you could appreciate it more actually having seen it live or actually seeing it live but as a film wasn't good.
3/10 - DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsNicolas CageJoaquin PhoenixJames GandolfiniA private investigator is hired to discover if a "snuff film" is authentic or not.Dark, Gritty, Disturbing. I loved it! Although it does show some things that, disgustingly, exist in the real world that are pretty sick even for fiction, it doesn't focus on it or use it as 'shock value'. It's a well made film that focuses on Nicholas Cage who is hired by an old wealthy widow, to find out if a secret tape that belonged to her husband was a snuff film or not. He goes and partners up with a aspiring musician who works part time at an adult shop to find out if it's real or not. There are a few twists and the acting is great. I found my eyes starting to fog up near the end as it is also a powerful drama. The film doesn't even have much gore or sex in considering what it is but a lot of it is implied and it can stick with you.
8/10 - DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.Nice Swedish movie. Have yet to see the american remake as Chloe Grace Moetz is one of the best child american actors today imo, or at least one of my favorites. That being said, swedish kids can act! I've seen plenty of things with children that aren't great at acting but the standard of it is much higher in this film, all the kids acted great especially considering the mature issues raised throughout the film. It has deals with some issues that are quite disturbing when a chunk of the film are 12 year olds (or portrayed as 12 year olds). The leads worked great though and I'll be looking forward to future swedish horror films :)
8.5/10 - DirectorMatt ReevesStarsKodi Smit-McPheeChloë Grace MoretzRichard JenkinsA bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian. This wasn't a bad remake. As bad as I would've expected anyway, obviously with a higher budget then the original this one looked a lot more polished which I think differed from the original atmosphere, it seemed like a more action/horror type film whereas the original one is more psychological and subtle. I think the script felt a little 'off' as some had been re-written and some had kept some of the original dialogue, I also felt one scene was annoying because it had them blue lens flare in :/. It did try to do something new as well as keep enough of the original. One thing that did bug me was the casting, I thought it was a little lousy on the bullies as they are supposed to be 12 but they look at least 16... but Chloe Grace Moetz was a perfect vampire and I though the kid, who was in the road (another great film) played well enough as the boy.
7/10 - DirectorDave PayneStarsDevon GummersallDerek RichardsonTina IllmanStrangers trapped at an eerie travel oasis in the desert must unravel the mystery behind their visions of dying people while they are preyed upon by a decaying creature.B movie I caught on Film4 a few hours ago. It wasn't that good... I lost interest about an hour or so in and then watched the ending. It didn't start off too bad, the gore effects were pretty good but apart from that the effects were bad and the acting wasn't good. I think they did pretty good though for what it was, a low budget horror but I wouldn't buy or really watch again...
4/10 - DirectorMichael TiddesStarsMarlon WayansEssence AtkinsMarlene ForteMalcolm and Kisha move into their dream home, then learn that a demon also resides there. When Kisha becomes possessed, Malcolm--determined to keep his sex life on track--turns to a priest, a psychic, and a ghostbusting team for help.Eh, didn't expect much from this and I was right. Nothing made me really laugh the closest I got to laughing was affion crockett's bit... smiled at a few more small bits in it but nothing made me laugh. Everything else was pretty bad as you'd expect from spoof movies and/or the wayan brothers. Some of it could've been a lot funnier but it wasn't executed right.
2.5/10 - DirectorJon LucasScott MooreStarsMiles TellerJustin ChonJonathan KeltzThe night before his big medical school interview, a promising student celebrates his 21st birthday with his two best friends.I think this is underrated. It's got a bunch of cliches in and is very similar to the hangover and most college movies. It is directed by the people who did hangover so that's somewhat inevitable. I think the leads did a good job and the writing wasn't that bad either. A few bits made me laugh...
6.5/10 - DirectorRichard KellyStarsJake GyllenhaalJena MaloneMary McDonnellAfter narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.I did get distracted half way through and probably missed quite a few bits but I'll have to watch again anyway, maybe rescore it after... It certainly has a haunting atmosphere throughout, the scenes involving frank are especially creepy... The acting is great, pacing is great and is a film you'd have to watch a few times especially because it is quite a long film and there's a lot of things in it.
8/10 - DirectorYûdai YamaguchiStarsTak SakaguchiAtsushi ItôHideo SakakiBattlefield Baseball is a tough game--it doesn't end until all the members on the opposing team are dead. In this game the Gedo High team is composed of blue-faced zombies, and their opponents on the Seido High team know they don't have a chance at beating them unless they can bring back a star pitcher who has a lethal pitch called the Super Tornado, but who has hung up his cleats and has no desire to return to the game.Do not watch seriously! It pretty much spoofs most asian drama films when they add in the OTT dramatic scene and it actually has some really funny bits in and most of it is just the amount random bits that make it so funny. Especially when they have running gags throughout but they don't overdo them like most movies I see that try it. Bizzare and surreal just like a good Japanese movie should be.
8/10 - DirectorJonathan LevineStarsAmber HeardAnson MountWhitney AbleA group of high-schoolers invite Mandy Lane, an innocent, desirable girl, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to drop mysteriously.Horny high school kids go to some place in the middle of nowhere and get killed off one by one, typical story... until the end. Not only the twist but just how some of the scenes were shot, I didn't expect the end until I read there was a twist and then I knew what it'd be... Not the best slasher but it's better then most of the ones that are released...
7/10 - DirectorGaby DellalStarsThomas DekkerLynn CollinsElizabeth McGovernThe disappearance of a 3-year-old boy divides a tightly knit community and culls out its secrets.I fell to sleep twice... Saying that though I think it started off reasonably well and ended quite well, although there were bits where I tuned out. It just seemed a little too dull throughout, it's not that I have no attention span either... It just wasn't pulling me in to the film. The acting was pretty good especially the lead guy. Wouldn't watch again though.
4/10 - DirectorHitoshi MatsumotoStarsTakaaki NomiSea KumadaItsuji ItaoA captured masterless samurai has 30 days to make a grieving boy prince smile, or he must commit seppuku. As a massive fan of Hitoshi Matsumoto and his previous works "Big Man Japan" and "Symbol" couldn't miss out on this. I don't think it was as good as the previous two but that it was still a great movie. Story is bizzare but underneath all the craziness it's a story about a father and his daughter. It made me happy, made me sad and everything in between.
8/10 - DirectorNicolás LópezStarsEli RothAriel LevyNicolás MartínezIn Chile, a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare. For some reason I was excited to see this. I can't remember what exactly prompted the hype in me or why... I saw some terrible reviews for it and I know why now. Now I usually feel sympathy for most people in most films, a little too easy so I think i'm too sympathetic... However, I didn't feel sorry for one person in this film. The effects, considering the low budget, weren't too bad. The ending was okay but it didn't save the movie from being mediocre...
Avoid!

After settling into their new home, a neighbor arrives to welcome them and give them a breakdown of the local rules; most important: do not go outside when the island's siren starts wailing.Pretty good, it sounded a little like Silent Hill in the horror sense but it wasn't. I liked it enough to rewatch but it wasn't the best thing I've seen. The film went really quick even with a smaller running time it was quite quick. Some people didn't like the ending but I wasn't that annoyed about it, it's by no length a conventional ending for a film but it's been done before and probably better. It wasn't the best ending it could've been but I didn't feel as let down as some people.
Overall it was an alright film and it was pretty suspenseful as well.

But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror.I think I need to watch this again. The twist at the end didn't make that much sense but that's probably because I wasn't watching as closely as I should. It's a nice twist but it's been done a lot of times before, however it's well filmed and made.
8/10 - DirectorJaume BalagueróPaco PlazaStarsJonathan D. MellorManuela VelascoÓscar ZafraIn order to ascertain the current situation inside, a supposed medical officer and a GEO team step into the quarantined and ill-fated apartment building.Fun film and definitely lives up to the original. It was a lot more slicker shot so it didn't feel as real as the original but it still had all the suspense that made the first one and probably even more then the first one. The ending on the original scared the living hell out of me, this ending whilst not doing the same was just as good. Whilst the original didn't scare me (minus the ending) moments in this one scared me due to the suspense. A great spanish film!!!
9/10 - DirectorPaco PlazaStarsLeticia DoleraDiego MartínIsmael MartínezA couple's wedding day turns horrific as some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. The director did this a lot different. Theres only 20 minutes or so of the movie filmed like the previous two and then the rest is filmed as any other movie. Whilst this takes away (or should) all the original elements of the previous films, it was a pretty good zombie film. The zombies (or infected) stayed the same as the previous 2 but it didn't feel like a Rec film it felt a lot more light hearted also then the previous two. As I said though it's a very good zombie film nevertheless, not the best and not as good as the previous 2...
8/10 - DirectorJonathan LevineStarsNicholas HoultTeresa PalmerJohn MalkovichAfter a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.Everybody kept comparing this to twilight but I decided to watch it thinking it'd be a lot different then the average movie... Obviously not :/. Just the thought of Zombies gaining so much consciousness to start conversing with each other and having unhuman strength... Land of the Dead was about as far as I could stretch my imagination, knowing that zombies have no brain (or one unable to function thus becoming a zombie) to watch a film where they are capable of emotions and the english language... Not for me. I think the romance side of the story (the only side) was too soppy and corny, I must have threw up internally several times.
First Twilight, now this... What monster/creature are we going to see butchered through ott teenage romance plots. The ending is predictable, it pretty much gives it away by the title and the tagline but even if you couldn't it's easy to see...
Zoned out far too much in this movie...
3/10 - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Yes, this is my first viewing (I have seen many clips over the last few years but only sat down to watch it today). Being a Quentin fan this was great! There's a reason that it's a classic, his writing is so on point especially with his comedy, he gets that balance right between the subtle and the bizarre. The scene where travolta blows the guys head off in the back of the car was so bizarre but the humor wasn't OTT and that played well!
I consider this movie classic now, especially with so many memorable scenes and a lot of dialogue from Samuel L. This is almost felt like a dream project incorporating the best of the best!
9.5/10 - DirectorNiels MuellerStarsSean PennNaomi WattsDon CheadleBased on real life events, Assassination is set in 1974 and centers on a businessman who decides to take extreme measures to achieve his American dream.Should technically be called 'The Attempted Assassination...' but I see why they didn't. Follows the true story of Sam Byck/Bicke (in the film) and his plot to assassinate Richard Nixon. Sean Penn's acting is amazing as Sam Byck who isn't the brightest of people, the way he portrays him makes it hard not to sympathize for his character. Although I think the movie is slow paced it's not boring and there's not really any scenes that could've been taken out.
Great movie especially the last few scenes, some nice editing done there and cinematography.

When she is badly defeated by "Ippon-ashi (One-legged)", her young and attractive rival, Miyoko is thrown out of the temple. So bad it was good! The film looks like a college film, low budget, really bad effects etc. but it was entertaining as hell! The crude editing, effects are done for humor though and it was a funny film!
Obviously not the best film ever to be made from Japan but it has it's funny moments!
7/10 - DirectorBrett SimonStarsReece ThompsonMischa BartonBruce WillisAt a Catholic high school, a sophomore newspaper reporter investigates a case of stolen SAT exams. He thinks he's nailed the suspect and managed to get the popular girl when he realises a larger conspiracy is afoot.Oh wow, whoever cast Bruce Willis as the head in this film needs some awards! He was a stand out character for me, every thing he said had me laughing or smiling all throughout! The film is great, well written, well acted etc. There are several twists and turns throughout, the last one got me, didn't even suspect it. It's a great little mystery and it feels like a much older film. It has the protagonist act as detective with his narration a la to the film noir type period however updated and modernized in the classroom setting. It works and it works well!
8/10 - DirectorDon ScardinoStarsSteve CarellLuke VanekSteve BuscemiA veteran Vegas magician tries to revive his career after his longtime partner quits, he gets fired from his casino act, and an edgy new "street magician" steals his thunder.Being a magician, any movie relating to magic I'm going to see! However, it means i'd be pretty critical of it... Saying that prior to seeing this I knew they had done there casting perfectly, I couldn't see anyone else but jim carrey portray a hybrid of David Blaine and Criss Angel. Although it wasn't as funny, it's one of the better magic movies to come out. They had a lot of references to moves and tricks in magic that I wouldn't think they'd put in as we are such a niche market but they did. Love the little cameo from Copperfield and it is well made. Not the best movie by any length but still a great little film!
7/10 - DirectorMalcolm D. LeeDavid ZuckerStarsSimon RexAshley TisdaleCharlie SheenA couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their lost nieces and nephew home. With the help of home-surveillance cameras, they learn they're being stalked by a nefarious demon. No idea what possessed me to watch this... Shame on me... I suppose I'm wishing that they'll return to the quality when they created the first few. The original was one of the best spoofs I had ever seen, they had it all. Now it's like they're not even trying... I think only a line from Katt Williams made me smile but even he has gone down in quality. It's a shame to see Morgan Freeman dedicate time to this piece of sh*t... I think 2nd worst one they've made (after disaster movie)...
1/10 - DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.Went to see on opening night at about 7pm and I was surprised it was not in the main screens, it was in a smaller screen in the cinema. Usually when things come out they put them in screens 1 or 2 because they are HUGE to accommodate but although the theater was nearly full it still didn't seem like it got a lot of people.
This and some negative reviews turned me off a bit but I still watched it and I kinda did enjoy it. It did something different with the 'zombie' (Of which I shall use lightly) genre. It's the first movie I've ever seen where we see zombies on a mass scale, like literally there are millions of zombies just running around killing and biting people. There were a lot of great effects and the film was exciting. It was just under 2 hours and it felt shorter. Nothing really in the field of massive twists but theres a new side to zombie films in it, that hasn't been explored much.
All in all if you like your zombies slow and braindead you probably won't like this but if you like your disaster movies then this is the one movie you will want to see.

A big fan on his parks vengeance trilogy and Asian cinema in general i was so happy to know he was directing an English speaking film. This was very stylistic and the cinematography was amazing. The editing was really unusual at points but it felt unique and felt like a Korean film. Acting was top notch, writing was great ( the story has been done a lot of times but this really stood out). Can't praise it much more but one of best films to out this year!
9/10 - DirectorPål SletauneStarsNoomi RapaceKristoffer JonerVetle Qvenild WerringAfter a baby monitor picks up another channel, Anna begins reliving the nightmare she'd recently escaped.A paranoia film that had some terrifying moments. It also had it share of sad moments nearly leading me to cry. The twist at the end I thought would happen but then was made impossible to happen during events in the film which lead to a climax that made no sense... I may have to watch it again because I probably missed something's but massive parts of the story seemed to contradict the ending... Despite it had some nice scenes in that are chilling and if only the ending had been better or at least explained so that it justified half the story it'd had been a great movie...
7/10 - DirectorJoseph ZitoStarsErich AndersonJudie AronsonPeter BartonAfter being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake.Stupidity: check. Nudity: check. Horny Teenagers: check. Just as formulaic as the previous 3. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. Wouldn't watch it again but it has some nice deaths if that's what you want. Whereas not anything really imaginative there's something about cheesy 80's slashers that is somewhat pleasing.
Nothing else to it really...
3/10 - DirectorDanny SteinmannStarsMelanie KinnamanJohn ShepherdAnthony BarrileStill haunted by his past, Tommy Jarvis, who, as a child, killed Jason Voorhees, is sent to a secluded halfway house in the countryside, where the killing of a young man triggers a brutal series of murders in the area. This film at least some sort of explanation for 'Jasons' return, even if it was so out there and implausible, it was a lot more plausible then previous movies. Still using exactly the same characters, now with an added OTT stereotypical stupid redneck mother and son, which wanted to add comic relief but just came off to forced and in your face.
Like Nightmare on Elm Street, it's trying to take it closer to the comedy side of things which doesn't work. A little better the the last movie but still, it's not great.
3.5/10 - DirectorTom McLoughlinStarsThom MathewsJennifer CookeDavid KagenTommy Jarvis exhumes Jason Voorhees to cremate his corpse, but inadvertently brings him back to life instead. The newly revived killer seeks revenge, and Tommy may be the only one who can stop him.Looks a lot well made then the previous ones. However, production value doesn't change the fact that it's just the previous 5 rehashed. Since the previous one in the serious didn't use Jason, I don't know why they decided to return to him... It's still a stupid storyline especially since Jason is now a 'reanimated corpse' and has been decomposing for the last 10-20 years but he's stronger then before, even to the point where he can punch through someones body? WTF?
It makes no sense...

0/10 - DirectorRob HeddenStarsJensen DaggettKane HodderTodd CaldecottJason Voorhees is accidentally awakened from his watery grave and ends up stalking a ship full of graduating high-school students headed to Manhattan, New York.Just as bad :/, When I didn't like the earlier ones and people said they were the last in the series of good Friday The 13th films, I didn't believe them and didn't think they could get worse... They can...
The previous one was the worst film in the series by far but this one could be just as bad. It did get a little better but they are getting tedious to watch. Jason's dead, comes back to life, kills lots of people, they kill him, he's not really dead, comes back, get's killed again etc... Every single movie... EVERY ONE.
I don't know why I keep watching them, even though I'm doing other stuff whilst watching as to keep productive... Only a few more to go -.-.
Also, I think it's stupid how Jason is, he's constantly dying and his body must be decomposing because he's underwater/underground for a long period of time etc. but he seems to be stronger? Also, on the previous film he killed a guy behind a tree and then seconds later he was underwater just about to kill the girl. Is he supposed to be able to transport? Did the girl not realize him getting into the water... Same here, he was in the alley and then BAM he was at the end of the road... It's actually insulting...
Also the time was TOO long, they decided to make it 20 minutes longer then normal -.- it could've been much shorter, 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 is more then enough... Why they made it 100 minutes I'll never know...
1/10 - DirectorAdam MarcusStarsJohn D. LeMayKari KeeganKane HodderSerial killer Jason Voorhees' supernatural origins are revealed.Okay this is a lot better then the previous 2. However not good enough to make up for the whole series. The first part was stupid, no idea why the coroner ate his heart... There's little to no explanation on stuff like this in the series which is really frustrating... Apart from that the story was better then a majority of them (which isn't saying much), it didn't feel like a Friday The 13th film though. It was more of a sci-fi horror but finally they had a interesting character, the bounty hunter. I think he was the best character in this...
Still very mediocre though.
3/10 - DirectorJames IsaacStarsKane HodderLexa DoigJeff GeddisJason Voorhees is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space. He gets thawed, and begins stalking and killing the crew of the spaceship that's transporting him. Here's an idea. Let's put Jason in a futuristic setting on a spaceship................. Why? WHY? WHY?
I'm assuming this is a sequel since they talk about his past but the last film sent him to hell? They killed him for good? Of course not, when you have a failing franchise, you just keep having to try to revive it... Everything that made the original Friday the 13th film good is removed. Jason is the only thing that's present in this film that is actually related to the series. No idea why they did this... At least they have some nice death scenes a la the ice face smash :D.
1/10 - DirectorDavid MichôdStarsJames FrechevilleGuy PearceJoel EdgertonA seventeen-year-old navigates his survival amongst an explosive criminal family and the detective who thinks he can save him. This was a very dramatic film at least in it's emotional impact. The film itself wasn't filmed very dramatically, it's actually very realistic. It had me on the edge of crying in some parts and it kept me hanging on for just under 2 hours so yeah, it was a very good film. I'm not a massive fan of gangster films, although this was more of a drama film about gangsters, mainly because they are very cliche and OTT. In fact this film had very real characters and I did sympathize with a lot of them. No real twists, a few shocks throughout though and the ending gave a sense of completeness and relief to the whole film... Didn't see it coming though.
8/10 - DirectorAdam DeaconDaniel TolandStarsAdam DeaconFemi OyeniranOllie BarbieriMeet Kenneth. He thinks he's got the moves. He thinks he's got the swagger. He thinks he can spit bars. But in reality, he's a WASTEMAN!Not the funniest british film and nowhere near it but it had it's moments. I understand that this is a very niche film, I don't think that unless you know people like the characters you won't find anything humorous, and it would come off annoying. Everything in here is OTT from the talk, to the clothing, to the characters etc. It's very explicit in that nature and as a person reaching adulthood, I think I would've probably found this a lot funnier 3-4 years ago. In that respect the film is only really funny for mid teenagers who actually live in areas similar to this.
Adam deacon is a creative guy despite what people say. Haven't seen a film this OTT on youth culture in London, it can even be seen as satirical and how older people view younger people in todays society... either way it's nothing deep or thought provoking and I'll probably forget it in a week but it's a fun little movie for those who it's intended for.
5/10 - DirectorRonny YuStarsRobert EnglundKen KirzingerKelly RowlandFreddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees return to terrorize the teenagers of Elm Street. Only this time, they're out to get each other, too.I love crossover films and to put the two biggest slasher villians in a film was a great idea. I think the director did a exceptional job especially having to capture both movies without making it a mess. I think it worked but it wasn't the best in either movie series. It was certainly better then the previous NOES and FT13 but only the first few in the series were good anyway. I like how the director took them back to the roots though as Jason had went into outerspace (which I suppose happened after this but I'm talking about the movies chronologically in the real world).
It was something almost dreamlike seeing Jason slashing up people on elm street and Freddy in camp crystal lake but in the end I didn't feel satisfied with what had happened. Not just the ending but the overall feel, I felt it could of went to more places but after all this was pretty experimental, mixing two of the biggest horror series together and I commend the writers and director for that.
I can't help but want Mike Myers to be in it as I think he's a total badass and out of the three I thought the original was the scariest, followed by NOEM followed by Friday the 13th...

Plenty of self deprecation, stabs at hollywood stars and dick jokes... Although the special effects felt a little cheap it was still well made and the acting was spot on from pretty much everyone.
Cinema was pretty packed despite it being a week after release date, albeit on a smaller screen.

People are looking to deep in it and picking out holes, sure they're gonna be holes when you introduce a completely different world then one we live in. It's a simple love story but has a lot of elements to it. Someone also pointed out about the reflection of class divide in the film which makes perfect sense. Something like I've never seen before and like I said the visuals are amazing.

Putting out numerous films each year but still maintaining a high quality. This film felt a lot more cinematic then some of the films I've seen, it looks nice and sleek but still had a realistic feel to it. Whilst it's still violent it's quite tame for a Miike film but you still get a fair bit of blood. The first half is quite slow but the last part of the film moves into a straight up shooter film, which incorporates a nice scene with a dual barrel shotgun and 'Mack the Knife'. It's a strange little film and whilst not a Miike masterpiece it's still very enjoyable and looks like the start of a new film series :D.
8/10 - DirectorMarcus NispelStarsJared PadaleckiAmanda RighettiDerek MearsA group of young adults visit a boarded up campsite named Crystal Lake where they soon encounter the mysterious Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions. It was better then the millions of sequels but it still lacked a lot of things. I think it was quite long as the intro was just over 20 minutes! It wasn't as good as the original but it was quite interesting, nicely made and slick. It also had an awesome soundtrack and Freddy was pretty hardcore. A few things didn't make sense though and some of the acting was naff so all in all the film was a little mediocre...
5.5/10 - DirectorCarlos BrooksStarsBriana EviganCharlie TahanGarret DillahuntA thriller centered on a young woman and her autistic little brother who are trapped in a house with a ravenous tiger during a hurricane.Story was a bit out there and had some inconsistencies but nevertheless it wasn't a bad film. The pacing is quite slow but it is a suspense type film.Sometimes I think it dragged on a bit and it was missing something but I don't know what it was missing. The effects are well done and I don't know if this was released mainstream but it didn't feel like it had a massive budget, but that didn't detract from the overall viewing. It was as exciting and scary as it could've been but it had some nice scenes, probably wouldn't watch again though :?
6/10 - DirectorJing WongStarsJackie ChanRichard NortonJoey WangA self-indulgent private investigator winds up on a cruise ship full of rich patrons, gorgeous women, murderous terrorists, and scarce food.Like most chinese comedies, tons of slapstick and a lot of visual humor. It felt a little dead in some parts especially because during most of the films it's full with humor so when there's no humor for a scene (or little) it seemed a little dead... Saying that when it was funny it was fu***ing funny. The bizarre song interlude, the crude editing and last but certainly not least the street fighter, fight scene segment!
6.5/10 - DirectorJoby HaroldStarsHayden ChristensenJessica AlbaTerrence HowardA wealthy young man undergoing heart transplant surgery discovers that the surgical team intend to murder him.The first 30 minutes or so, felt dragged out. As well as that the soundtrack at times made it feel very corny and over-sentimental, a bit too much especially considering what follows. The other hour of the film is amazing! There are several twists in the film, one of which I kinda guessed but the rest were totally unexpected but in the first part of the film it does somewhat hint towards them (which is shown throughout flashbacks). It was well filmed, especially the surgery scenes and Clayde's consciousness. As the film progressed it went from mediocre OTT sentimental garbage to a geniunely exciting thriller.
8/10 - DirectorNeil MarshallStarsRhona MitraBob HoskinsAlexander SiddigA futuristic action thriller where a team of people work to prevent a disaster threatening the future of the human race.I got bored towards the last hour. Maybe it was my lack of concetration watching it but nothing really did it for me. It had some nice tense moments, fair share of gore and guts throughout it but something was missing... Some good scenes though! May need to rewatch sometime...
5/10 - DirectorJennifer LynchStarsVincent D'OnofrioEamon FarrenEvan BirdA young man held prisoner by a cab-driving serial killer must make a life or death choice between following in his captor's footsteps or breaking free.Well this was depressing! It wasn't a bad movie but it had some mediocre acting. It's a movie that was okay but I couldn't watch again, not just for the lack of things but because of the nature of the film...
The ending suited it perfectly though because it is strange because I feel very sorry for the kid because he had to be bought up like that but so did the villian in the film which I obviously hated, but there's no difference between the two characters... It reflects a double standard many people have for films like this but I don't think the director was making light of the stuff the villian does... Anyway, it wasn't a bad film but couldn't watch again.
6/10 - DirectorDeon TaylorStarsNikki ReedKeith DavidBrad DourifA maniac murders teens when they refuse to forward chain mail.Whilst visually it was great (most of the time) I think the writing fell flat. The story had a lot of inconsistencies, most prominently how when one person deleted the chain mail they'd die later that day (or on that day) but when another person does it they don't die until 3-4 days later... It had a lot of gore in, well they had 4 or 5 scenes which were very gory but apart from that there wasn't much. The acting was not great but the story as a whole just didn't make sense... One good thing is that they didn't force feed you the ending, it gave enough clues throughout and pointers but didn't reveal anything in the end... Whether they're making a sequel I don't know but that made it stand out from most hollywood horror films... Not enough to save it from being mediocre though :/
5/10 - DirectorMitchell LichtensteinStarsJess WeixlerJohn HensleyJosh PaisStill a stranger to her own body, a high school student discovers she has a physical advantage when she becomes the object of male violence.Seemed like a comedy rather then a straight up horror. The tone kept changing throughout the film and after the first half it just became a corny sex comedy film. Well all throughout it was kinda stupid...
I don't even know whether a story like this could've been made into a really good film... There were a few nice songs in the soundtrack but that's about it...
3/10 - DirectorPaul McGuiganStarsJosh HartnettBen KingsleyMorgan FreemanA case of mistaken identity lands Slevin into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses. Under constant surveillance by Detective Brikowski and assassin Goodkat, he must get them before they get him.Very well made film. Writing was awesome and it kept me smiling all the way through with the witty exchanges throughout. Directing was great, especially some of the cinematography. This is the epitome of a great film! Great cast and acting nothing else to say.
9.5/10 - DirectorRamaa MosleyStarsJuno TempleMichael AngaranoAlexis BledelWhen a couple discovers that a brass teapot makes them money whenever they hurt themselves, they must come to terms with how far they are willing to go.Awesome film, whilst the plot might seem mad and crazy the director actually pulled it off. Whereas it could have ended up really bad instead it's actually a thought provoking film about human morality, abuse of power and greed. The film deals with all of this through a colorful cast of odd characters and comedy which is strange for the subject matter. It also had it's touching parts in but except for some parts in the film with sketchy acting I think it was pretty good especially considering it didn't have a wide release (Or at least I didn't see it over here in the UK mainstream), they are usually the best films!
9/10 - DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsColin FarrellKiefer SutherlandForest WhitakerPublicist Stuart Shepard finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle. Unable to leave or receive outside help, Stuart's negotiation with the caller leads to a jaw-dropping climax.Wanting to see this for a long time. Popped it on today and what a film! It had a lot of suspense and at the end it was emotional especially to see the change in Farrell's character. The ending was great, a satisfying ending although you wouldn't think it be as satisfying. Great acting and well filmed.
8.5/10 - DirectorJames DeMonacoStarsEthan HawkeLena HeadeyMax BurkholderA wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.I was very excited for this one, any horror fan would be. What a concept but because of the high expectations from this anything short of amazing would be below par... Unfortunately it was missing quite a bit. I couldn't help but feel it was too short, or at least it didn't have enough content in it. With the running time under 90 minutes and about an hour of that slow paced but maybe it was just the contrast between the last 20 or so minutes containing all the action, twists and all that. I would've liked to see it on a little bit of a bigger scale and maybe have some interesting personalities within, couldn't help but think pretty much all the characters where the same... Anyway it was pretty fun too watch, not as good as I expected though.
6/10 - DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyûhei MatsudaMasanobu AndôShunsuke KubozukaA visually stylish tale of two male prisoners bonded by emotion, love and murder. Can't say I really enjoyed this film. Didn't full understand it and I'm a massive fan of Takashi Miike. It was certainly amazing visually, half of it looked as if it was in a theatre on stage and it kept alternating between that and a more cinematic look. Something I've never seen before in a film, at least not in western cinema. Unfortunately I just didn't find it as engaging as many of his films, maybe because it was so 'artsy', maybe over artsy... I'm sure I just didn't understand it and it did have it's fair bit of symbolism in (as many Miike Films do) but I dont think I could really watch it all the way through again, despite it's short running time.
5/10 - DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.I guess it was alright... Nothing like I was expecting though, reading how great it was I was hyped up to see a scary horror film, I was thinking it'd be like the original Halloween scary (which I believe is still one of the scariest slasher films) but it wasn't. It was a little disturbing with all these deranged 'redneck' types, which is done to death in horror films (which maybe is why I didn't like it that much). Maybe it's just too situational and I have no doubt I would've found it a lot scarier in the 70's. There were some scary scenes particularly during the last part of the film (dinner table scene was pretty scary) but not much else to say. Some of it was unintentionally funny i.e. the dad hitting the last girl with the broom, that made me laugh... but I guess for a low budget 70's horror flick it was good and it is what it is... Wouldn't watch again though :/
5/10 - DirectorCameron CairnesColin CairnesStarsOliver AcklandPaul BlackwellWard EveraardtReg and Lindsay run an organic fertiliser business. They need a fresh supply of their "secret ingredient" to process through the meat grinder. Reg comes across two guys and a girl with a broken-down vehicle on their way to a music festival. This is a great little gem from Australia! Most films I've seen from Australia have been high quality, even smaller low budget films like this. It was exciting, tense in places and enjoyable. The effects, particularly the gore was well done and it didn't feel low budget. It had a lot of humour but didn't dilute the drama and the horror in it, I really liked the main character Reg, likeable and very multi dimensional character. Nothing bad to say really!
8.5/10 - DirectorPaul FeigStarsSandra BullockMichael McDonaldMelissa McCarthyAn uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. This one had me laughing, maybe not the funniest thing I've said but it's riddled with jokes. Yes the story is cliche, the straight protagonist and the idiot protagonist in a misfit duo but this was a good take on it. I think Melissa McCarthy was especially strong in this film as the no-bars held cop, and 90% of the laughs came from her and her dialogue with Sandra Bullock. Awesome film, with 2 badass female leads (which is not that common in most films nowadays...) There's a lot of cliches but I think the comedy makes up for it and at least kept me watching.
7.5/10 - DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJesse EisenbergCommonMark RuffaloAn FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.Heard about the ending being a big disappointment but being optimistic for this film I ignored it. Unfortunately they were right... Wasn't the worst ending I've ever seen but it wasn't a good finale, especially since the build up was anticipating something amazing but it was far too weak...
The film was pretty good but was let down a lot by the ending, most twists were obvious and not on par with other magic films I've seen i.e. the prestige (although there isn't a magic film I've seen on that level, Illusionist is pretty close though).
6/10 - DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsJason SudeikisJennifer AnistonEmma RobertsA veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico. This is one funny film! Didn't think it'd be as funny but now I'm convinced! There were strong performances throughout, Ed Helms as Jason Sudeikis's drug boss stands out to me, didn't even recognize him and is a totally different person to say, his performance in the hangover. Another stand out is Will Poulter, saw him in son of rambow a while back and did not recognize him either. All round like I said though, Jennifer Aniston as a stripper is reason enough to see this! Anyway very funny, one of the funniest films this year (On par with The Heat) and just great fun!
